Whether you're buying or selling, just skip this place altogether, its a waste of time. When you walk in, all you see is dingy, damaged and outdated alternative clothes that only a select amount of people would be interested in, including themselves. They don't buy items based on current trends and styles, they buy items based on their personal styles and what they like, and its very obvious. You could bring in trendy and designer fashions in good/almost new condition, they wont take it and will give you a short list of the random things they are looking for. read more

Word to the wise...don't let your spring cleaning wait till summer time. You won't get any money back for that old Starter jacket till it cools down again. When reselling clothing it has to be in style, in good condition, and in season to have any sort of chance of getting anything for them and many of the negative reviews are just people who are sore their stuff didn't make the cut. From a store perspective, Buffalo Exchange is well organized with friendly staff and some pretty wearable stuff depending on the day you go in there. It's a resale shop so some days are obviously better than others, but that's part of the fun of thrifting at stores like this. I've had good experiences with this organization in the past in other cities, and made a pretty decent amount of money. So I came here before bringing clothes to goodwill that were nearly brand new and high-end. They took nothing from the two large bagfuls of clothing I brought, and told me they don't do donations at this location due to "size of the operation" (I have gone to NYC locations in the past, and they have always donated). So since I do not have a car, I had to pay for an uber there and back when I had anticipated being able to at least donate what they did not take. Very unfortunate. read more

I was greeted when I walked in and asked if I was there to sell. I was then advised to sit down because three other people were ahead of me - no big deal. Once it was my turn, I went up to the counter and she gave a little spiel as to how they work. We were chatting as she went through my clothes and at the end... "sorry, we can't take anything due to wear" Seriously??? Some of my items have been worn not more than once. Some I can understand why they were passed on, but I expected a better explanation as to why my things were not "good enough" for their store. If I would have had a better and more thorough explanation as to why all my things were rejected I would have considered shopping around in the store nonetheless! But because I was kept short, most likely due to other customers waiting to sell their clothing as well, I decided to leave and to never return again! I have worked in this field for a very long time and the customer always comes first. If I was with a customer, and especially if I had to reject all their clothing I took my time explaining exactly why I rejected them and even gave some compliments "hey, your style of clothing is really cute, but....some was a little too worn, some was due to our current inventory needs maybe bring them back another time, the styles were a little older than what we are looking for......" But I got the "due to wear" short, rude with a smile on her face explanation. read more

I've always been a fan of resale shops. In fact, I make it a point to shop there exclusively. $25 at Forever 21 for one blouse? Methinks not. I can get TWO blouses for the same price at Crossroads, at Platos, or in this case, at Buffalo exchange. I was perfectly content with this store, It wasn't as great as the Buffalo Exchange in Lakeview, but every once in a while I can find some really great outfits and come home feeling like I've gotten a really good deal. That's why I'm adding a star, instead of only giving the Buffalo Exchange one star. This is their redeeming factor, and the sales rep who greeted me was extra nice. She had short blonde hair. I call my customers "darlin" as well, and I found it especially endearing when she greeted me that way. Why only 2 stars then? I had a particularly disturbing experience today around 4pm. I was shopping around and had 3 outfits in hand, and was browsing the jewelry before I made my purchase. Obviously I could hear what the sales reps behind the counter were saying. The usual, "OH I love this outfit!" and "Do you need any help?" and the normal chatter and whatnot. I was half in and out. Then I heard something quite offensive. Did you sell-"(Didn't hear what it was, was still in and out) "with the Jesus print?" Another girl replied, "Yeah, I sold it to some little *Mexican*." ... ... Excuse me? I was stunned. Really? As someone who's grown up in a hybrid Mexican and American home, and is dating someone who is Mexican, I was extremely aghast at her racist remarks. Maybe she felt comfortable saying this horrible statement while I was within earshot because I am also white? I don't know... "Some little Mexican"? Is that all she saw? I did however manage to match the offensive statement with a face behind the counter because of her voice. She had blue hair. Short blue hair. She was also of small stature. I don't want to be one of those customers who comes on here to say "Oh my god, fire her!" because I believe that people make mistakes. I do however believe that this employee needs to be retrained on how she carries herself around the store. Her own bigotry is her business, however, she should not display it in front of the Buffalo Exchange's customers. I understand that this is Wicker Park--it's pretentious. Unfortunately, I get it. However, racist comments are definitely frowned upon anywhere. After this repugnant experience, I was left with a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I really like this store. Sometimes it is a high-and-miss, but that's how it is with most thrift/consignment/resale shops. But that is also kind of the fun and the "thrill of the hunt" that comes with shopping secondhand. I have found a few cute things here. My best find was a Gucci bag for $50. I LOVE it and have used it quite often. I actually went there yesterday and saw a pretty sweet Michael Kors canvas and orange croc bag. Too small for me though, but I did pick up a Ezra Fitch by Abercrombie cashmere sweater for $20. If you look through the items, you can find name brands like Famous Stars and Straps, Juicy Couture, Lacoste polos, 7 For All Mankind jeans, Betsey Johnson, Dooney and Bourke and Lesportsac bags, and more. Again, it all depends on the day. But I always seem to find something I like enough to purchase. If you're looking for a lot of "help" ("Bothering") while shopping, you won't find it here. The ladies working tend to stay behind their counters evaluating items or selling them, or allowing shoppers into the dressing rooms. But what help do you need sifting through secondhand clothes? What do you say you're looking for, exactly? Also, if you don't use a plastic bag to carry your purchases, they will give you a $.05 token to be placed in one of three charity boxes on your way out. So, your not using a bag helps benefit an animal shelter or whatever. Pretty sweet, especially if you have a bag from another store already with you, so you can just put your item in there! Don't bank on the idea that you'll get a ton of cash for selling your old clothes though. It's frustrating to find out your $60-whatever will only be bought by them for $8 and sold for $15, but that's just the way it is with stores of this variety. It is also located near other shops of the same variety. A bit competitive, but makes shopping more fun. If you didn't find anything at, say, Recycle next door, you can try Buffalo Exchange. If nothing there, walk across the street to Crossroads Trading Co. read more

Been to many BE's across the country and typically the buyers knew what they wanted and gave a fair market price. But the lady that helped me had no idea what she was doing. She had to keep talking to her coworker and asking if this was "cute" or worth buying. I mean do that in private? Kinda awkward as a seller but interesting to know how subjective buys are from clothing resellers. Note: You can't donate whatever doesn't end up selling. There is a Salvation Army 1.1 miles away where you can drop your items off. Typically at other Buffalo Exchanges, you can typically leave whatever you don't want at the store. read more

Because where else can you find a pair of like-new bronze Toms wedges and a perfect-for-Spring lace Topshop dress for just over twenty bucks a pop?! A 'Buy, Sell, or Trade' resale shop, Buffalo Exchange is a welcome alternative to the typical clothing store. Because their stock is made up of items that real customers bring in to either trade (for a store credit valued at half the amount at which they will resell) or sell (for a cash percentage of the trade value), most items are unique finds. This adds a sort of 'treasure hunting' type of feel to the shopping experience. This also means that if you have even the slightest inkling that you may be interested in a particular item, grab it and hang onto it lest you want to spend the rest of your visit 'stalking' the patron who snatched it up before you - hoping that they will change their mind and set it down. This location gets a ton of traffic - ensuring that new items are put out almost daily. My prized find to-date would have to be an oversized Tory Burch bag (valued at about $500), a steal at fifty bucks! Another fave find would have to be balloon-hem Armani Exchange shorts, priced at $16 with an added 'take an additional 50% off' -- reducing it to a whopping eight bucks! With all the success I was having at unearthing such treasures, I decided to try my hand at trading in some of my own clothes. They accept current styles in great condition (your worn out baggy jeans will likely not make the cut), and will pay more for designer labels (the staff is very knowledgeable about even relatively low-profile designers). The appraisal process goes quick (save for that one time a couple ahead of me in line had four Ikea bags worth of clothing to trade), and is free of the judge-y way that other resale shops 'reject' your items. Sure, they don't take everything - but they don't make you feel horrible about the stuff that doesn't pass their test either. And they pitch a pretty fair offer - especially if you take the trade value instead cashing out. read more

What's a girl to do after dropping a few pounds but not gaining any extra income? Pray that no one notices that I wear the same pants every day? Wear two pair of pants so the top pair actually fits? I couldn't bring myself to consider either option so off I went looking for inexpensive ways to replenish my dwindling wardrobe. I was impressed by the quality of many of the items I found and by the price tag. I found a couple of pairs of jeans and some pants for work and I spent less than $100. Usually this wouldn't be a huge accomplishment if I were at Target or something BUT I walked away with brands that would usually allow me to only get one item (maybe two) for the price I spent on all of my items. I was proud. Can't you tell? The fitting room guy gave me a high five. Yay! I now have options. The staff was pretty nice, it wasn't very crowded and I was impressed with the prices.So unless I start making some big bucks (and even then) I'll probably return here every now and again for some great finds. read more

Buffalo Exchange is my favorite clothing reseller in Chicago! From a seller's perspective: I have sold A LOT of clothes here over the years. Each time, the staff is very cordial and friendly, chatting with me as they look through my items. I've never had to wait a really long time to sell: probably the longest was 20 minutes when I was the third in line. When they do buy products, they give me the highest per-item price that I could net at similar retailers. From a buyer's perspective: you can find some pretty cool items here. Sure you have to look, but sometimes, you kind find very well-priced designer items, such as a $25 Dior jacket or a $20 Theory vest! It's location on Milwaukee Avenue is very convenient to the Blue line, so it's a fun store to visit while your shopping around on the street! read more

I bought a vintage pink plaid summer strapless dress for $11.00 It's AMAZING- a full fifties skirt, boned bodice, mother of pearl buttons, big bow in the back and a dreamy hourglass shape. Very Betty Draper. Salesgirl stuttered as I paid "Just so you know, This cannot be returned because it is on sale..." Not letting her finish (get used to it) I started shouting "MINE! MINE! I'm Not returning it, No, I'm NEVER returning it, it's mine! You CAN'T HAVE IT!!!!!" I was very nearly jumping up and down hysterical. I don't think that was what she expected. read more

Just sold almost a suitcase worth of items here and got a little less than $100, I can't lie I thought it would be a bit more--but if it were really an issue I wouldn't have parted with them. Based on how they decide to price your items, you get 30% back for cash or 50% back for store credit. I had two different buyers look at my items and IMO both seemed to price very similar items differently so I guess it's all subjective if not arbitrary (but I'm sure there's a very detailed system). For the most part everyone seemed really nice, except for the snobbish look an employee gave one of my items. But I ain't butt hurt about it, it was a frumpy sweater. On another note, I did look around as I was waiting and the style of the employees and customers in the store seemed very hipster meets hypebeast--but the actual clothing on the rack looked kinda basic--I just felt like items weren't cute by themselves, you'd have to really know how to style them. But perhaps the people who shop here know how to take my 5 year old Forever 21 top and make it cool. I also feel like their best items were their graphic tees. I'd come back to check those out. Also learned while in the store that the shop around the corner gives 33% back as opposed to 30%...oh well...still happy I made a quick buck from clothes I no longer wear. read more

This place is a waste of time. The clothes are poor quality. It's fall, why is your inventory primarily shorts, tanks and flip flops? The items that are NOT mentioned above seem to be like a freaking costume to me. Is that normal? My experience here was better than expected. I had been to the Buffalo Exchange in Austin Texas while visiting there a few years ago and loved it! I didn't even realize Chicago had one until this Wicker Park location opened. I have a really hard time parting with old clothes, like I'm rejecting an old friend or something. I decided the time had come to just do it, so I ransacked through my clothes with speed and decided to ditch everything that I hadn't at least tried on in the last year. I ended up with a TON of stuff. Some things which were just super beat up and those got donated to the thrift store. I'm not sure what their guidelines are for accepting clothing, but everything I brought in they bought, 3 garbage bags full! You can choose cash money (35% of what they will sell it for), or you can trade it in for store credit (50% of retail value). If you ask me that is a great freaking deal for stuff you're going to get rid of anyways. I like others who have reviewed am also an avid thrifter, but this is NOT a thrift store, it is a way to exchange and obtain used clothes that are in good condition. This store is my first choice in resale shops. I have always had success in selling items and buying clothes I like. Sometimes there isn't enough selection in menswear but overall, they carry the type of stuff I look for. Anybody who is disillusioned by their customer service (or lack thereof), let me make a suggestion--- go shop at cookie-cutter GAP, where staff accost you the minute you walk through the door OR go to thrift/charity shops, where you have to sort through a lot of sh*t to find the good stuff. Buffalo Exchange staff ask you if you need help on occasion but mostly they leave you alone to browse. And that's how I like it. Anybody who thinks B.E. has a "hipster" attitude or won't buy your stuff because they think it isn't cool enough, please realize that they are in the business of buying clothes that will SELL -- to their particular demographic! -- regardless of how expensive, cool or "cute" your items are. If a year old $15 shirt from H&M will sell faster than a five year old $80 Ted Baker shirt, then they will buy the H&M one. That's just how resale retail works. Deal with it. We stopped by Buffalo Exchange because we were in need of specific items (a pair of jeans and tights). I found two pairs of Betsy Johnson tights for $9.50, which is more than I would expect to pay at a thrift store, but is still not egregious. At 5:30 PM on a Saturday evening, the store was fairly busy. Items were organized well, separated by men's, women's, shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, jewelry, and Halloween costumes, which were 50% off (final sale). Overall, my impression of Buffalo Exchange is that items are overpriced for bring gently used second-hand. The general style of pieces are not what I would typically go for. While browsing a rack, I overheard a girl talking about how she was going for "shabby chic" and how that was different from "boho chic." Suffice it to say that there were no J. Crew polos to be found. That's totally fine and I understand that it is what is, but it's not my cup of tea. The shoe selection was decent. I imagine this place as being very hit or miss, like a lot of thrift stores. I liked that Halloween costumes were half-off. If I came back, it would definitely be to check those out! read more

Hmmm... It's hit or miss with this place. I came to sell some of my clothing (Forever 21, Express and a couple of higher end items). They were two girls working the counter and of course, everyone else came to sell their stuff as well. She went through each item with me and at least the girls explained why they couldn't take the clothes that I had. The first time I sold at Crossroads, I was just looked at cross. In all, I ended up walking out with about $22 for a pair of Joe Jeans and and old old Coach backpack. Not bad considering the clothes were just going to the Goodwill. read more

Having just moved to Chicago from LA, I had high expectations of this store. The Buffalo Exchange stores in LA were fantastic...in Chicago, not so much. I have been a handful of times, and have never found anything worth buying. On top of that, the prices are pretty high. And don't try to sell here. I was informed "they didn't choose to go with anything" in a rather patronizing tone. I've seen some of the junk they try to sell, and I can tell you my stuff was a lot cuter. It may not have been designer, but it was cute, and much better than some of the stuff I have come across in their store. You'll have better luck selling at Crossroads. Probably best to avoid on weekends - it was completely overrun with people. Hard to browse with the crowd. I must give kudos to the women working there while I shopped. Lots of highschoolers were shopping at the time and the sales women had to deal with a whole range of attitudes from the destructive ("I don't want it anymore, I'm going to just drop it right here on the ground") to the dramatic ("but I thought it was only $6!!!!!"). This spot can have some really good finds depending on when you head in. If you head there with the intent of purchasing a certain thing or specific item you might end up disappointed since it is not that type of store. I have found some pretty bada$$ t-shirts and jeans from time to time. I think the prices are reasonable and staff is friendly for the most part. To the people that seem to want to rag on this place and compare it to your L.A. store of yesteryear. You clearly didn't shop there all too often because the manager of this store used to manage the one on LaBrea. O.K. then, since it is a resale shop the stuff they have is what people have brought in to sell. Buffalo Exchange has tons of locations in LA, so when I moved here last year, I was so happy to find one in Chicago. This location is rather small, and it is really easy to get frustrated with people aimlessly wandering while you are digging deep in racks. Unlike Crossroads, Buffalo Exchange accepts vintage wear, so there is a real mix of newer and vintage pieces. I have gotten some really great pieces here, but in general, the stores in LA are significantly better. One great perk is that the store manager, Aimee, seems to keep a really high standard for buying; that is, the buyers are careful to look for tears, rips and stains. I find Crossroads sells way too many damaged pieces. In terms of selling here, I found that the three buyers I worked with were all patient, really nice, and explained why or why not they would take something. They took their time, and I ended up selling 5 or 6 pieces and made $40. They offer 50% of the amount they will sell it for in store credit, and 35% in cash. There is metered parking on the street, and more around the corner at the park. read more

So.... I have many thoughts about the Buffalo Exchange. I'd basically boycotted the shop after trying numerous times to sell things here. It's pretty shameful coming in with suitcases/trashbags full of stuff and selling what you can and leaving with eight bucks. After experiences like that, I've always thought "Why should I go back and support an establishment that makes people feel like shit about what they own?" Maybe that's a bit melodramatic, but I am definitely not the only person that feels that way about the selling-back aspect of the shop. However... That pickiness is for a reason, and I finally appreciated it to the fullest today. I was in Wicker Park trying to thrift out some jeans to boost myself out of a leggings-only phase. I stopped in the Ark and was pretty discouraged, so I came to the Buffalo Exchange on the whim that since they're picky, they MAY have the style I'm looking for, and even if they are overpriced I felt okay spending $25 or so on jeans. I WAS FLOORED. AND SO SO SO HAPPY. First off, I was so boosted to find that they organize their clothing by size and carry plentiful of XL/12-16 size jeans. It's really hard to sift through stuff if I know places don't carry my size. So this was a plus. I pulled three pairs of pants to try on, one was a no go BUT THE SECOND. OMG THE SECOND. On the tag it was marked a 12 but I think it might have been shelved under 14, but these jeans were exactly what I was looking for in terms of fit and size. Then, on a whim, I tried on these crazy looking corduroy pants that had this cool brown paisley-ish print over black on them, AND THOSE FIT LIKE MAGIC. LIKE, WHAT. A BIG GIRL BEING ABLE TO FIND UNIQUE CLOTHES THAT ACTUALLY FIT AWESOMELY?? IN WICKER PARK??? AT A BOUTIQUE????? OMFG. The excitement was real. Plus, both jeans were under $15, so for under thirty dollars I got two pairs of pants and renewed my faith in The Buffalo Exchange. I'll totally be back here to shop for other things, especially to steal out some of the sales! read more

I found this place on accident. And very happy that I did. Not only that you can shop there and find some exclusive, trendy, fashionable things. But also, you can sell you stuff. That's what I did today actually. They do it right in front of you and it doesn't take long, which is great! The girl was very please and kept conversation going while checking my cloth. If your stuff qualifies for their purchases you'll either get a cash back (33%) or store credit (50%). In doing so (selling your clothe) you'll get a great reminder of how much money you spend on things you hardly wear. read more

Buying: Love the hunt and found the racks to be organized and pleasantly surprised with the quality of the merchandise. I was even happier with the prices. I love the mix of vintage. Trying clothes on can require a bit of wait on the weekends and I found all but one of the sales persons running the dressing room to be very helpful and also organized. Selling: I find this part of it fascinating. Your first time in they will go through the process thoroughly and will provide you with some helpful hints about what to bring in to maximize going back home without it. I thought the most important piece of advice was that we hold on to some items a little too long - they really try to stick to items that are no more than a year old. No problem - I will not hold on to expensive designer item simply because I paid a lot for it. Overall I enjoy the sales staff - they obviously love clothes and fashion so they will point out where the "good stuff" is if they have time or you ask questions. read more

This place is mostly full of junk. That being said, I can usually find something I like, that's not ripped or stained or otherwise gross, for under $20. Such as a barely used J. Crew dress right in my size for $16. The store, however, is really crowded and hard to get around. There's a lot that's completely un-interesting or just plain bad, so you have to sort through all that. Otherwise though, if you have a half hour and some patience, you could stop in and probably find something nice. read more

I love this store! I found a coach wrist lit (which a few years later would be jacked by a dog in Casta Rica... grrr... stupid dog) for like 30 bucks. I was so happy! I always manage to find something when I am there. People need to understand that resale shops are a time and effort kind of shopping. It's like searching for a diamond. But overall they have a nice selection, and some nice more expensive brands as well. What I do really like is that when you buy something and use a reusable bag they donate .05 cents to a charity. Firstly, let me preface this review by saying I have been to multiple Buffalo Exchanges outside Chicago and love this company. It's a great way to turn one man's junk into another man's hand-me-down treasure. This rating is reflective of this Buffalo compared to all the other Buffalos instead of compared to other consignment stores. Compared to other chained consignment stores, in Chicago especially, Buffalo gets an automatic 5 stars from me. However, I have a few issues with this location: 1. This is a seller's Buffalo, meaning they are a little more lenient on the stuff that they buy than other places I have been to. So this is great if you are selling clothes. However, this leniency is reflected in the quality of goods so you won't find as many "steals" here. A lot of the brands are low end and priced a bit lower than I would find them new if I waited for a good sale. I have been here a few times and I have yet to buy anything, and boy did I try. 2. The turnover of products is pretty darn slow, or at least it is on the men's racks. Either that or they replace junk with other junk and I didn't notice. Overall I pick Buffalo over other consignment chains any day of the week. However, don't come here expecting to find steals regularly. The great thing about this Buffalo is the location though, as it is close to many other consignment stores and eateries so you can just make a jolly day out of it. Happy hunting! read more

I ended up getting a pair of maroon pumps my size (they fit perfectly) and were only $10 !!!! This is the best spot to find great clothing pieces that I have found not only in the Wicker/Bucktown/Logan Sq/etc. area, but in Chicago in general. Staff is always very friendly and selections change/fluctuate frequently. I have found some of my favorite articles of clothing casually browsing this shop. Prices are extremely reasonable and if you disagree, look on eBay for what you are debating to buy in the store. I have gotten several RL Rugby cardigans here (for example), which go for at least 4 times more on eBay in the same condition. I see no point in buying new clothes when I can just find awesome and eclectic stuff here. read more

Boooo, Buffalo Exchange! How can you be so clueless and stay in business on that strip crowded with stores just like you? Oh, right, you're corporate. I've found one great pair of jeans here. They happened to be men's and I'm a woman, but that's beside the point. Their sign says their managers have been trained to buy clothing (which I think means "we know more than you"), but all they seem to buy is stuff from obnoxious trends that dictate hot young women should either dress like they're 85 or toddlers. Acrylic sweaters! Unflattering shapeless shirts! Stuff that's so cute you'll puke up kittens on it! Huh? read more
