This place is crowded and sprawling, with tons of clothes mashed into one room. The organization is pretty clear in terms of the type of clothing, but beyond that, it's anyone's guess to the algorithm used to put the clothes. The prices are slightly on the pricey end, though it depends on your taste and your luck. I found a fairly new J Crew dress for $20 and a beautiful vintage dress for $24 (since it's zipper was broken, it was half off). However, I also saw tons of clothing that didn't seem clean (I.e. Pit stains, etc.) and others that seemed older and of lesser quality compared to the cost. Nevertheless, there are some hidden gems and it may be worth your time searching through. read more

I walked past here from the grocery store and thought "oh, another Crossroads... interesting." Since it was around Halloween, I wondered if I could trade in some of the clothes I had on eBay that just weren't moving in exchange for some costume-y stuff. I went first to Crossroads where they shook their head at me, and then headed over to Buffalo. One of the girls and I chit-chatted while she pawed through my bag of goodies and complimented me on my good taste (take that Crossroads!) and then handed me over a two digit store credit which I promptly used part of to get some domestic-cat ears that would match perfectly with a cropped faux fur jacket I found down the street. Has some great shoes but the pricing is extremely high for what you are buying. The clothes racks are too hard to look through due to overstocking the racks. It's hard to walk through the store because there is stuff everywhere. Although I did buy a couple things, I did pay a lot for the items I bought. Also, the workers would not move out of the way for anything, I had to walk around them and it got quite annoying. read more

I took a load to this resale shop, I think these places are looking for certain kinds of clothing, if you have nice clothing that is not high end designer, or up to date kiddy clothing or vintage, I don't know you get nothing for the nice things you have, also they told me the percentage they would give me, but I never was given an amount of what the clothes were worth, so I just got whatever amount they told me, which was a little confusing. The best spot for used clothes! They sell both newer and vintage clothing, all in great shape at reasonable prices. Best of all, it's a chill environment. Much better than judgy Crossroads across the street, whose employees all seem annoyed to have to do any part of their job... I am a huge fan! Everytime I go to this store I find something, I think there was only one time that I didn't! I only wear black or grey, so I can go through the racks really fast because I don't look at any other colors! I'm a fast shopper!!! I go there at least once a week. I have found some of the best pieces and of course at great prices. If you go there and you can't find anything, there is something seriously wrong with you!!! The staff there is really sweet as well and super helpful. They rock! My only complaint is when I try to sell stuff. I don't always get their philosophy of buying, it varies from person to person. I'm a young art student, of course I shop here. Buffalo might not always have the best prices but I tend to find more here than I do at Crossroads as far as higher end clothes, I also prefer the arrangement of sweaters, blouses, etc. having their own racks as opposed to color (especially since I don't really wear a lot of t-shirts). Some people have complained about the customer service, I don't know what the deal with that is but when I shop I personally prefer people to get the fuck away from me, so my prerogative may differ. They're not particularly chipper but nobody has attempted to assassinate me, so I bear no grudge. I don't always find something but you've got to come on the right days. Also their dressing rooms are spacious with enough hooks that don't make me feel like I'm locked in an uncomfortable closet. Their jewelery is fair and varied but their shoes are usually not great, that's where I'd head to Crossroads. The accessories are relatively generic other than bags which are so-so. As for sellers, you should already know that pickings are slim (they even wrote a NY Times article on this), so you've got to have something good, in style or really new condition for them to be motivated to buy. It's probably part of why you want to get rid of the clothes and nobody's buying. Don't hate them for it, it's a business. read more

I am an avid thrifter/consignment shopper and I was extremely disappointed in the Wicker Park location. The shopping experience was incredibly unpleasant: the racks are way too close together, the girl at the dressing room was standoffish, I kept seeing flimsy items from places like F21 priced at $12 (which is absolutely outrageous, one particular item would probably sell for $10 brand new in the store), and the selection in the store was baffling - mostly trash. I came here wanting to have a good time but I left in a terrible mood. I will not be back. read more

Came here to sell some clothes. 2 hours later, we walk out with $36 and most of our shit, unsold. I don't get it. I have some cute vintage and pseudo designer threads that are begging to be worn by some cool hipster of wicker park. Unfortunately bison swap seemed more interested in past seasons of h&m and used american apparel shirts. I have been on both ends of the buying and selling part of this store. The buying: I saw a few clothes that were O.K., but nothing special. I actually didn't try on anything, but my friend did. I felt really uncomfortable when the woman there was staring at me like I was going to steal something. I was looking at some necklaces and she just kept staring, it made me really paranoid. I didn't even have a big back or anything that would suggest I could steal anything. When we got out of the store my friend said the exact same thing. Other than that, it was a 3 star experience The Selling: They buy your items for around 30% of what they are going to sell it for. It really isn't that satisfying when you sell a $50 pair of Jeans for 14.50. and thats only 30% of what they are selling it for. Sometimes its just as good to go to buy things new. You can also choose to get a store credit that is worth more than if you were to choose cash. I chose cash because I don't really find many cute clothes there. I think next time I will look around and try to find better deals on selling. read more

What I've found lately is that in the event that you are selling items and they purchase a few of them, the selection at the store has made it harder to justify using your credit as trade. The new, store-brand (but so-so quality) items seem to have increased and the more interesting (and often higher quality) pieces purchased from sellers are fewer. I don't go here for the new stuff, I go for the used stuff precisely because it tends to be better quality. So what ends up happening is that as a seller, you get less bang for the bucks they give by walking out more often with cash. I doubt that this is intentional, but it makes selling here a less attractive proposition even though you can get cash on the spot. All that said, I appreciate the business model and will continue to support this place when feasible, for that reason. read more

Between putting on 5 (much needed) pounds this past year and a few ModCloth Stylish Surprises that didn't fit/suit me, I decided to clean out my closet. Figured I'd try to sell some before dropping it off at the local thrift store. Buffalo bought several dresses of mine--while I wish they'd taken everything (a girl can dream!) I was super happy with the amount I made off the dresses they bought. Overall, thought I got a great deal and they seemed to love my stuff--win-win all around. Staff was super friendly and they really seem to have a good system. Didn't browse the store (because the last thing I needed was to add MORE stuff to my closet!) but seemed well organized and busy! read more

I've been in here a few times, and LOVE it every time. I never fail to find something that I can't leave the store without, and they always have such an abundant selection of clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories. You know some thrift stores that can't help but you make feel like your search for clothes was just a waste of time? You'll hardly experience that here. B.E. always has updated, stylish, and reliable options to choose from. I personally think their items are appropriately priced. Today, I bought the cutest brand new pair of summery wedged sandals for $20!!! The other week, my boyfriend found a nice pair of Levi's that looked practically new for $11. It seems that they try to keep everything organized but sometimes it's hard to work with a shit load of clothes and very tight space. Deal with it. I was disappointed in the selection. I expected so much more from the Wicker Park locale of a reputable secondhand store. I guess there's only so much they could pack into such a tiny store, but I found barely a full rack of tops in my size and only a few skirts...of which the selection was only okay. I managed to find a pretty cool vintage button-down and sequined purse for $20 total...but these items were lone standouts amidst the obviousness that they opt to carry boring versions of brand name items over anything unique and cool. read more

I've never been to an LA buffalo Exchange, but I guess i can imagine they are better. But this location is still pretty good. At least for men, they have a nice selection. I mainly shop for denim here and i get what I'm looking for, They also have a nice selection of shoes sometimes, again, I can only speak for the men's department. The people who work in this store are some of the friendliest associates I've ever encountered! When you're selling clothes, they will compliment your items, explain why they are taking or not taking them, and make you feel like you're treating the store to your leftover wardrobe. WICKER PARK THRIFT STOP #2 When I lived in Boulder, Buffalo Exchange was my favorite store. They were classier than most thrift stores, and I was guaranteed things that were in style and not falling apart. In Tucson the Buff is like twice as big as all the other stores, and the clothes are twice as awesome (and already broken in! Who doesn't love that?) Unfortunately, that's not really the case with this Buffalo exchange (or the one in Lincoln Park for that matter). Maybe Crossroads was here first, or maybe they just toned down their awesome. For whatever reason, the Buffalo Exchanges in Chicago are smaller, messier, and less organized than any others I've been to. The clothes are not necessarily current or even attractive (although if you're looking for synthetic 80s sweaters I found some HOT ones) and there is a high proportion of their stock that came from somewhere like Target or Old Navy, and probably costs more than it did at those stores originally. I continue to love Buffster since they are better than most thrift stores, will buy clothes from you, and sometimes have sweet finds (oh sea life tank top, you were such a steal) but for the most part I was disappointed. read more

I have shopped at this store for about two years now and I recommend every man and woman, regardless of your style, to at least visit. It may seem intimidating to throw up your bag of your clothes onto the counter and have some woman look through it for some value. However, I don't think there's any reason to be scared. If you've never been in the store before, focus on the employee less than the fact that your stuff might be gold or trash. The employees are trained to impartially look through the bag for things that the stores customers are going to want. It has nothing to do with their personal taste. If you ask them simply what they are looking for for the store, I'm sure they would love to tell you and then you don't have to lug around a bag of your unquestionable and wonder if your getting any cash today. I call before I go in and see what they are looking for that week and then I look through my stuff. They, off the bat, aren't going to take your soiled, stained or ripped clothing so don't even bother. I try to find currentish garments that I think someone else might want... If you start thinking that way, you are guaranteed to walk out with more cash than you might have expected. Don't be a pack-rat. Get rid of it early and it pays off! read more

Like any other thrift/second hand store I've been to, this place is hit or miss. It's pretty good for cheap good clothing, most of the time... and I think it's one of the best 2nd hand places I've been to here in Chicago. It has not been fantastic, when I've gone, but just ok. My boyfriend finds tons of stuff, but I do not. I've bought 2 shirts here... The service is friendly and good, though. So... I'm still just an ok... My one complaint/suggestion is that the selling process at Buffalo Exchange could use a number system. They run on the honor code when "who is next?" is asked; which means that inevitably you end up having two-ish people jump in front of you thinking they were before you, and you end up waiting quite a while to sell your clothes. They do; however, offer you more for your clothes than places like Plato's Closet. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I sold here to get $6 for a pair of gold flats. Other than the lack of a number system, this place is great. Because they are picky in what styles and conditions of clothing they accept and because there is such a variety of clothes from different stores, I'm always able to find something, which is not the case shopping at normal retail stores. read more

Not a thrift store but a consignment shop. Meaning that you can buy and/or sell your clothes. Great finds if you have the time. Don't bother trying to rush through consignment stores because there's so much to comb through. A lot of high end styles too at a good price but not thrift store prices though which could be a good or bad thing for some. My friend found a pair of BCBG shoes in mint condition for $25. For those of you who know that brand that's a steal of a deal. For me I found a pair of shoes in mint condition also but from doll house - $15. read more

This is only a selling and customer service review. I've sold twice so far to them and both experiences were super easy. There was a wait but not terrible and I went on a Saturday during the day once. They accept out of season clothes which is really great. I thought their pricing is very fair and honest. I thought shoes were pretty hard to sell here. They basically have to perfect. I always take the 30% cash because I really don't have the patience to look through the store. Compared to CrossRoads both are a hit or miss but if you want to be treated like an existing breathing person, this is the place to be they will even start a room for you so you don't have to lug all your clothes around. They accept quality items in the best shape and form everything is arranged by size. The workers themselves are quite stylish a little hipster like but what else can you expect you're in the heart of bucktown/wicker park ;) if you are quite the eccentric I suggest this place is a must. read more
