I went in to sell some unwanted jewlery. They took one necklace even though the others were in good condition. Their jewlery section just looked like a lot of Made in China native American inspired cheap chokers. I wasn't impressed by the clothes they had. I also couldn't find a single pair of shoes in my size. Some tags said Sale but I had no clue how much the discount was. It was just all around dissappinting. read more

This place really grinds my gears! As a young girl I used to love coming here with my friends and digging through the racks of clothing, trying to find that perfect piece. More or less these days I have no desire to shop here anymore. Tried to sell some clothing and the first couple times I did this it was a great and fun experience. Now and days it just feels like a waste of time. Almost every time they take one to two items or nothing at all. Hate to toot my own horn but nothing I wear is generally on the low end so to have them take only one dress a dress from H&M I have to wonder where there buyers head is at? Then to only be offered $3.60 cash or $6 trade when they will turn around and sell it for $12-$15 you have to question why all the hype? I brought in two bags filled to the top with items ranging from every season, every style, and price point, even custom made leather pants! Maybe they weren't eclectic enough or not on that bohemian wave length but I do not believe everyone wants to look the same as the store employees. I think that's the point to come and shop at these stores is to be able to find pieces that match your style and exude your tastes, not the staffs. While waiting to see the buyer I briefly looked around the store and they have some okay looking stuff but the prices don't match the labels. Many items are overpriced for second hand duds! The purse selection is weak and what is name brand is sitting behind a closed glass case and to home of designers such as coach or dooney which in my opinion falls a little short of high end but I also get that the area is home to many vagrants and all walks of life so that explains the seclusion. Their shoe section is rather large and do feel that they have a pretty wide range of styles and sizes, but no where really to sit and try them on and limited mirrors. Lastly the staff is okay, most are friendly but over the years the kids employed here have an air about them that wreaks of attitude and elitism. Like they are the end all be all fashion gods of Albuquerque. I don't think I will return unless I need a cheap and quick Halloween costume...hippie perhaps!! read more

I have been shopping and trading at ABQ. Buffalo Exchange for almost 22 years. I am now a senior citizen and this is truly the only place I shop for clothing, purses and hats. The quality and selection is fantastic.....and I know my stuff! I have purchased especially rare, superior condition and quality vintage, including exquisite beaded wool sweaters from the 50's and 60's, 60's dresses and tops in mod colors and fabrics,as well as enid collins handbags....I have an entire collection...all bought at Buffalo. Contemporary cashmere sweaters and Trina Turk paisley silk bell bottoms are recent purchases. I go when I get that feeling something really special is about to be found and go thru all of my things to bring for trade.......when that happens.....I know it is a special day at Buffalo! New Orleans, UCLA, Tucson, Atlanta, Portland ....I have shopped at all of these locations and I can say wholeheartedly....Albuquerque Buffalo is by far the Best! This is a very large store on Central Ave. (Rt. 66) in the Nob Hill area, which makes it easy to find for a tourist who is shopping/dining on Central Ave's Nob Hill district. That is how I found it. I liked that it is so large and everything is spaced out, lots of room to browse without getting elbowed. Lots of purses and clothes. Prices ok. But Aater over an hr, I left without buying anything, and I am a sucker for a good deal- I always buy something at thirft stores, so that says something. Selection just seemed tired to me. But i wil give it another try in april when I am back in ABQ. Why? Location- I will be back in Nob Hill again, love that area. Out of the many Buffalo Exchanges i have been to, this one is the best. For the past seven years i had only the Portland, OR Buffalo Exchange to shop at, and that one, is the MOST pretentious, snooty, too-good to help our customers, too-fashionably-hip to look at our customers, and just too hip in general. So I felt refreshing to come down to Albuquerque and find a Buffalo Exchange that was nice, and not every piece of clothing was of that one specific hipster style. The employees are generally nice, at times I have felt they were a bit pretentious or rude, but over-all friendly. The clothing varies a lot- once I spent $500 there, and another time I couldn't find a single item I liked. It really depends, and they are still one of the cheapest shopping destinations that have clothing I am looking for. Some of their prices have gone up, but this is still my favorite buffalo exchange. The men's section seems to have better clothes than the women's sometimes, but I also know that varies. Overall- I think this Buffalo Exchange is much better than many. read more

My mom and I went in with 5 bags of practically bran new all Forever 21 clothes hoping at the very least we would each get like $20. I was looking around the store and not only were there clothes that looked like they had been pulled right out of the '70s but and then proceeded to be put through a meat grinder; 95% of things I picked up had holes all through it. That or they had come out of a cat hoarder's house; cat hair all down the entire inside of a floor length coat. The clothes on display were some the worst I've ever seen at a thrift shop, and we were told that what they were looking for in trade in cloths were current trends within the last year. I missed the issue of Vogue last year where Christmas tree green lame flower sacks were in style. Rude employees, hypocrites as all of our cloths *were* from last year, and cheap. Will never step foot in there again or give them a dime. read more

I've been shopping at Buffalo Exchange for years and every where I travel I make sure to stop in the store. I've been to one in NYC, Chicago, Tucson, All over California from San Diego to San Franc to Oakland and my favorite of all is the one in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Shopping in Abq is a disappointment overall except for Buffalo Exchange. I always find something great from a gorgeous Gucci sweater to simple basics. My absolute favorite buyer is Noah! I have been shopping at this Buffalo Exchange since my high school years, on and off as I have moved back and forth from Albuquerque in those many years. I think there are some fabulous people that work there, especially currently! I often find myself chatting with the staff and am always greeted warmly! People love to get upset at the buying counter, but I am just happy to have a place to sell items when I need a little cash or just want to switch up my wardrobe a bit without breaking the bank. I tend to sell my big ticket items on my own inline, either on apps like Poshmark or on good old Ebay. The buyers are just doing their best and it always frustrates me to see people getting upset! You don't have to sell anything there if the price isn't right for you, and they are saving you the trouble of taking the time to sell online, as well as the shipping and commission fees of doing consignment or otherwise. They make selling things faster and easier than alternative methods, which is why you sometimes end up with less than you think you should. I am ranking my experience there one star short of perfect for a couple of reasons, however. My first issue has to do with the music they play. I understand that Buffalo is an alternative store, and they target a specific market, but as a twenty something myself, even I find the music selection to be obnoxious and grating at times. That being said, I could get down to some funky indie music tracks if they just weren't being played at such a high volume! I sometimes end up getting a headache and leaving without even trying things on because I just need to get away from the loud music. Occasionally they don't play it so loudly, and I even get excited when I hear them play more chill and generally more palatable music, even if it does veer more towards the mainstream (HAIM, Tegan and Sara, Purity Ring- all favorites I've heard in there before and make for an excellent shopping soundtrack!) I also know that my best shopping buddy ever NEVER wants to go to Buffalo with me because of the music, which is a shame and I'm sure she's not the only one who feels that way. The second issue I have with Buffalo is more of a recent trend I've noticed there over the past year or so. I feel like the selection at Buffalo has gotten less and less eclectic over the years, which I get on one level- there is a need for them to stay on trend and keep up with people's lust for labels and name brands. That being said, one of the BIGGEST reasons I have for shopping at Buffalo so loyally is because it has offered me the opportunity to opt out of the world of fast fashion, cheaply made clothing and unethically sourced materials and practices that hurt our environment as well as the people who work in inhumane conditions so we can pay dirt cheap prices for disposable clothing. Anymore, however, the racks at Buffalo are packed with new clothes that they order from trendy labels and though they are current and often times somewhat appealing in style, I've made the mistake of buying a couple of these pieces (you can spot them by the yellow or blue tag as opposed to the white ones they use on used clothes) and they are just as cheaply made and unsustainable (ethically as well as physically) as Forever 21 or H&M, but even slightly more pricey. The shoe, jewelry, shirt and sunglasses selections seem to have suffered most from this new approach (I'm not sure if they even buy sunglasses that are used anymore, except maybe one or two exceptions for high end brands) and it just frustrates and saddens me so much to see what was once an alternative to mindless consumerism with no thought for the consequences now becoming a perpetrator itself. It's even more sad because they still cling to this image of being alternative and morally conscious. In addition to the new clothes, I also feel like they could chill on the Forever 21 pieces; there are so many I start to feel like I'm at the mall. They're horrible quality and the prices you sell them for are pretty much what they cost brand new anyways, so even if I wanted them, I would be frustrated! I do appreciate their bagless policy and their regular partnerships with local non-profits, and I will continue to shop and sell there (though I do find myself turning more and more towards investing in high quality, ethically sourced new clothing rather than feeding a company that will use my money to perpetuate the cycle of fast fashion), I'm just careful to avoid their new label items. I do hope that they reconsider this method, however! I love to shop at the thrift stores in town, but sometimes I don't have time to sift through racks of clothing to find better quality items, and I miss being able to rely on Buffalo for having a good selection of high quality items that I don't have to feel guilty for buying! Kind of like a hipster thrift store, Buffalo offers a fairly small, but well-chosen selection of name brand and vintage duds at good prices. Given that Buffalo is a second-hand store, their stock is subject to fluctuation, but I've been here a couple times and it's pretty consistent. If you're looking for a specific brand or style for some article of clothing, you may leave empty-handed, but if you're just there to browse, you'll probably find a deal you can't pass up. That was certainly my case. I sold some stuff for a reasonable amount of trade credit and was able to use that currency to buy a great pair of Levi's so unblemished you'd think they were new. Their prices tend to fall into two categories: either the stuff is just name brand, then the prices are low, or it's vintage and can be surprisingly expensive. Either way, the stock is in great shape. Most things look just like new or are clearly well cared for vintage. This means, of course, that they are pretty particular when it comes to purchasing clothes, so don't be surprised if they reject some of your wares. Finally, contrary to another reviewer, I thought everyone here was really nice and helpful. Our buyer started a conversation with us, we shared some genuine laughs, and she was done before we knew it. Great experience. read more

I went to BE after being relocated for a few years and WOW! I remember being able to go in when cash was low and buying a few pairs of pants a shirt or two and having left over money for lunch and now it's like paying mall prices. One thing I thought was interesting is I overheard an employee telling somebody they only take clothes that have been sold at the mall within the past 6 months! I understand times have changed but man I didn't know the mall and being super trendy was what BE was based on. At least the staff was friendly had it not been for that I would have started looking for the food court and kiosks. Sorry buffalo but I will never go back to buy or exchange anything for credit, I can't afford to shop at the mall or your store. read more

I went in looking for a 1940s style dress for a wedding. They have quite a wide variety of dresses that are all secondhand but fairly good to new quality. I ended up finding a bunch of 1940s style dresses for less than $20. After trying a bunch to find one that fits, the one i wound up picking only needs minor adjustments - missing a belt (which i bought a belt from their collection instead), needs a hook on the back which i can sew on, and has some minor holes but not very noticeable. I wound up getting it because other shops I've looked at sold dresses of similar quality (or some in worse shape) for anywhere from $80-400! So for less than $20 this was a great deal!!! read more

After some hesitation, I decided to purge some items from my closets that hadn't been worn in years. Why hesitant? I'm 68, and this is a "hip" shop. To my surprise, many of my items were purchased and I received a reasonable price. But, the one factor that impressed me the most was the courtesy. I also took time to browse their immense store. Now that I have acquainted myself with their selections, I look forward to returning. Both to buy, and to sell. Is their niche for everyone? Only you can answer that. On July 21, I took four brand new pairs of Levis jeans, three mini skirts, two of which still had the price tags, a darling pair of low rise shorts, (very dressy) that still had the price tag and a thick snuggly warm sweater to sell at the Buffalo Exchange on Central in Albuquerque. This little creature that looked like a rejected voodoo rag doll with tons of piercing and tatoos, that had most likely not bathed in a month told me that my brand new expensive clothes that I had purchased from Dillards were not good enough for the store to buy. "I'm going to pass, these aren't what we are looking for." I am not kidding, one of the pairs of Levis I had never worn they were too big and the other Levis were in excellenct condition, the other clothes still had sales tags because they were too small and I never bothered to return them. These clothes had been in a clean bag in my attic for a couple of years and were clean when I took them to the Buffalo Exchange. As I sat there and waited on this little troll just to insult me and my clothes I looked around at the rags that were for sale, ughh! I have bought nicer clothes from a Goodwill! I graduated from UNM a couple of years ago and I know that these little kids think it is hip to look like they just crawled out from under a bridge but seriously, just because they think they are with it does not mean that anyone else is impressed. One of the sales girls was showing so much cleavage I was totally disgusted. Whomever is running this dive is probably just as low class. Get with the times, people want decent, nice, fashionable clothes to wear. That worn out, stale, wanna be hippy nonsense is tooooo overrated. These little kids have no idea what it is to be a real hippy. Just because they dress like bumbs doesn't mean they are "all that", in the least. I will never go into that dump again! read more
