Buchner's is always a good time -- I've never had a bad meal or experience. Sit out in the biergarden if there's good weather, the bar for a bite and drink, or the beer hall with your big party. Everywhere is fun and you'll have great service. The food is authentic and just so dang tasty. I love the Jägerschnitzel, it's crispy and amazing. The meat and cheese boards are fun to share and always a good treat. As is tradition, you should get a pretzel because *why not*. The Käsespätzle is insane. I love that they mix up the cheese or mixings to give you variety and keep it seasonal. Well, we went on a Sunday at 2:00pm. One waiter for the whole place. So they lose a star for slow, Un-concerned service. Probably the worst potential racist service we've had in Florida. It is smaller than the pics make it look and it's inside and behind another shop. Making it harder to find. They do have a descent bier garten in the back. So there is that. We we don't know about the food because we didn't get to eat. We sat around waiting and then all he did was come over and ask us to move to another table. we waited a half an hour or more. an hour and a half wise it was 3 o'clock. He had a party coming in at five. He was asking us to move to another table because he had a party coming in at five. The guy was a jerk. I didn't care that we were leaving either without eating you never said sorry no nothing so I wouldn't recommend the place. It is quite frustrating because we drove all the way from Jax Beaches to try it. But we didn't even get water before the waiter was asking us to leave. I get the feeling it's because my wife is Asian as he served everyone else but seemed to ignore the fact we were there. We got our own menus from the bar. The cook was there and he was nice but has his own job. Even the three guys next to us got their beers but us he never even offered water and then he came and asked us to leave before 4:45 and it was only three so I really get the feeling that he's just the problem. Food and beers are great, but the service is lacking. It comes across as one of those places that if you're not a local known by the staff, you tend to get pushed down the service ladder. That's probably not the case or at least. I hope it isn't but that's the appearance. We were ignored and two couples that came in after us got service before we did. We weren't pushy or rude or anything of the sort. We were just waiting patiently. We've had really good service there before, but that seems to be the exception and not the rule. This was my first time at Buchner's-- came for opening weekend of Oktoberfest with a small group of friends. The courtyard out back was setup very well--It was festive and the staff was dressed for the occasion. We mostly just came for drinks but ended up sharing a pretzel with cheese & mustard which was a large enough size for 2-3 people to share. They had 1 beer on draft outside but you could still order all draft beers on the menu and they would bring from inside (which took a little longer to get). The ambiance is fantastic--ornate and atmospheric by the bar, with an open, airy space in the back. There's also a private party area you can book. If you smoke, the back area is smoke-friendly, but if not, staying inside is the better option. The beer selection is excellent, with a great variety, and they also have ciders. However, if you're looking for non-alcoholic drinks, the options are pretty limited. The waitstaff was a highlight--friendly, engaging, and really made the night fun. Came here with a group of friends during the evening and had a great time. Sat outside in the Biergarten as the weather was warm and breezy. Their kitchen was backed up so initially we weren't able to order any food for about 30 mins but we weren't in any rush. They took our drink orders and they came out fairly quickly. We shared the pretzel with cheese sauce and mustard and the two flatbread: mushroom and bacon. I really enjoyed the pretzel. It was warm and soft and paired really well with both dips. This is a cool secret German pub. It's hidden away - tucked behind a vape store. They have a nice interior bar that is dimly lit and serves good schnitzel. Their beer garden in the back is great with groups. Beer selection is excellent. Food is good but expensive and overpriced. I'm super embarrassed to say that I've lived in the neighborhood for 4 years and tonight was our first visit to Buchner's. Every time we pass by, we always say, "We should give it a try." Tonight was the night we finally went and I'm impressed. We were greeted immediately as we walked in and we decided to sit outside since it was a gorgeous night. The beer/wine list was outstanding as was the food menu. We started the meal with the pretzel and cheese. For entrees we opted for the bratwurst. Decided to spend the day in Murray Hill which means we had to spot in at Buchner's Bierhalle. We came in a little past open and were able to get a table inside. I will say they had most of the tables inside full or at least with reservation signs on them so make sure you plan ahead. Once seated it's time for beer. I love that they had so many German Beers both on taps and bottled since they are some of my favorite. I of course had to get 32oz stein since, 1: were at a German bar/restaurant and 2: you can't get them at most places when when the option is there you take it. We of course had to order food too and got plenty to share. We went with the Wiesn Vesperplatte (charcuterie board), The Pretzel, and a large Jägerschnitzel. The Wiesn Vesperplatte was great filled with some of my favorite meats and cheeses: Ziegenkase Herbed Goat, Genoa Salami, Smoked Gouda, Emmentaler, Mortadella, Prosciutto. You can't go wrong with it when going with a group. The Pretzel is a must of course. Perfectly cooked and fluffy. The Brown Mustard it comes with is very good but when you are getting a pretzel you have to get the Bier Cheese. Yes, it is extra but it was worth it. The 10oz Jägerschnitzel is my favorite when it comes to Schnitzel. The Mushroom Gravy is creamy and just takes it to the next level. We did get the gravy on the side because some of the friends we were with had never had it but they gave us plenty for dipping and they loved it. I will say it is pricey at $37 but with a group it's great to share. We of course will be back since we are huge fans of German food and beer and unfortunately there just aren't many options for that in Jacksonville. We of course will be back and once it cools down will be ready to spend sometime in the Biergarten. read more

My friends and I went tonight for the Christmas Market and were really disappointed. It's a great idea but this restaurant is way too small. We weren't able to get a reservation and just walked in. Stopped by the last day of Octoberfest, and we had a fantastic time. The place was packed and everyone was in a wonderful mood and had a great time. We enjoyed the German singing and one of their amazingly large and declined charcuterie board, I really enjoyed the deviously sausages and mini pickles. I also a pretzel with mustard, because I can't ever pass on a good soft pretzels, they are my favorite, anyway! The beer was really good, I had a light Pilsner and also tried the Octoberfest beer. Just ok, maybe due to the Christmas Market event. 3.5 Service- Initially great, wait staff good, Biergarten workers wonderful and patient with the crowd, but the host- condescending. Went in for the event, initially greeted great and added to the list. Went to the Biergarten and had two beers and a giant pretzel. Good beer, good pretzel- huge with beer cheese and mustard. Found a table clearly marked "Community Table for waitlist guest" as shown. Sat down and about 5 minutes later the host came up and asked if we were seated here. We mentioned the table sign and he said this was for reservations. We mentioned there were other tables marked for reservations and some with "self-serve" signs but this specifically mentioned for a community table for waitlist guest, which made it seem to be a spot to be used during this time. He was super condescending and said "well we will change that". The thing is, if he said we are pretty busy and need to move this to a reserved table, or the message meant something else, I would totally understand, but he came over very brash. It was not even super crowded as we were able to move to a self serve table right away and there was a minimum of 4 empty tables the whole time while we waited. We were seated soon after and ordered. Basic food since an outside event- bratwurst with German potato salad, potato pancakes - not the typical- more like plain hash browns.. The seasoned sour cream side was flavorful and saved these. My meal, a corned beef and pork sausage was cold and not flavorful. Pretty plain on soggy pumpernickel. The table also had a few pretzels and one was super hard, old and overcooked, which the server was apologetic for. German potato salad was good. Price tag- expensive for basic food. Maybe if we tried the dinners, they would have offered more. Menu was limited- maybe based on the event- but not sure. The thing is, I love German food and was looking forward to really good offerings. The outside area was cute, but small and tight. Limited vendors for a market- about 4 in the corner. I'm always on the prowl for quality German food. I don't claim to be an expert on German cuisine, but after visiting Germany many times on business over the last few decades (with each trip resulting in undesired weight gain - German food is hearty) I know what I like and when it's good or when it's not. This is our first visit to Buchner's, and we were not disappointed. It's a rather small venue, nestled in an old speak easy, with a larger outdoor beer garden with picnic tables and umbrellas. We started out with the Buchner Green Salad (excellent), an order of a bratwurst sandwich, and a couple of us got the Jägerschnitzel with portabella mushroom sauce, german potatoes and green beans. Everything was really flavorful, which used a vinegar and spices seasoning (some may not like the vinegar and spices style, but I do like this so was quite satisfied with the flavors - if you visit and order the schnitzel you will understand what is meant by "vinegar and spices flare"). For an appetizer, we ordered the pickled eggs, and an order of Pumpernickel and Compound Butter, with an al a cart side of Pate (liverwurst).... bread, butter and liverwurst with beer, you just can't get any more German than that. Lots of draft German beers on the menu, and a very good wine selection (they only serve beer and wine, no spirits). The service was great. I recommend you give Buchner's Bierhalle a try. This hidden gem is hard to find, as there is no obvious signage other than some random bierhall flags as one of the few clues you are in the right place. The entrance is not well lit, and you walk through a sitting area and once past that is an unassuming tavern like area. The waitress asked if we made reservations on Thursday night in Jacksonville, which I thought was funny. Although now when I think about it, this may have only been in regards to indoor seating as there were about 5-7 tables total. We decided to sit in the Biergarten, which was well covered under canopy and had old style picnic benches that you would find in Europe. I ordered the curry wurst which was probably the best I have had in the U.S. so far. It was comparable to ones I have had in the streets of Berlin. In Berlin, they serve the curry wurst in a Kaiser roll, drizzled with curried ketchup and French fries on the side. Here, the curry wurst is drowned in curried ketchup by itself with a side of sauerkraut and German potatoes. Luckily, you can order a Kaiser roll on the side for an extra dollar. The curry wurst ketchup sauce was tangy with a hint of sweetness (not spicy) and I would describe it to have the consistency of a ragu/marina type sauce. It was great (definitely homemade), and I did not hesitate dipping my soft Kaiser roll into the remainder of the sauce after finishing the wurst. The sauerkraut had a smooth flavor and did have the harsh sour afternote you sometimes get with fermented cabbage. The potatoes were okay and probably could have used either more mustard seed or salt or something to give it a better punch. Mixing the curry wurst ketchup fixed that problem. We also got the large cheese board which had Gouda, Brie, Emmental cheese, and herbed goat cheese. There was a 5th cheese but I think it was a Parmesan regiano like cheese. There were plenty of crostini toasts that you could spread the cheeses with a side of mustard and tiny pickles. I washed this down with a Raspberry radler which was light, smooth and mildly sweet and is a great option for people who don't appreciate a bitter beer taste. The lemon radler is a bit more classic and just as refreshing. Sitting on that bench sipping on that Radler reminded me of my times visiting Germany. I was stuffed, and we got the Black Forest cake to go which also was probably the best I have had at a German restaurant in the U.S. For a taste of Europe, try Buchner's Bierhalle. read more

If you don't know this spot you will walk right past it. It's located in the rear of another business. Nice indoor area, it's tight, but enough room to enjoy, but the fun is outside. The patio area is quaint and intimate...but I can see some serious dancing going on. The tables have umbrellas so it works rain or shine...lots of rain Saturday. The chef station is in the middle of the yard...not sure if that's a permanent spot, but it worked well. The menu looks like German food, possibly... can say . They served what I can guess a beef steak, mashed potatoes, and picked red onions w/a salad. Salad-basic veggie salad, but the dressing was mind blowing... it was a creamy strawberry flavor. The beef was okay, a bit dry and not seasoned; ;nevertheless, the brown gravy was over salted which balanced out the beef. The potatoes were just potatoes, nothing good, nothing bad and the wine was great. The dessert- all I can describe it as is a chocolate cake, with melted marshmallows maybe, and raspberry filling, at least I think it was raspberry...it was great of though..cake was moist and the filling was magnificent. But as always, the Yelp ladies did not disappoint. They made sure everyone was comfortable and having a good time. Very hospitable and inclusive. My first time at the Bierhalle and I really enjoyed it! The food, beer, and wine do not disappoint! Loved the pickled deviled eggs, every meat I tasted was delicious, but the bread... ohhh the bread! Crispy outside and soft deliciousness in the middle! I picked up a Bratwurst to go for latter on and wow! Delicious meat, amazing bun/bread, but what most surprised me was the sauerkraut and potatoes on the side! I'm not normally a huge fan of sauerkraut, but their ham infused version was delicious, and not as overpowering as most sauerkraut seems to be. I loved it! Cosy indoor "speakeasy" atmosphere with both bar and booth seating. Large pleasant outdoor garden seating area perfect for larger groups and events. Good place to eat on a cool evening as well! BUT nothing ruins a good experience then to have a hostess and server treat a person like CRAP. So this sweet couple who sat behind us walks in the man has a walker and the gait of someone who has more than likely suffered a stroke (my background is all medical, so I think what's what happened.) All of this to say we were appalled, by our server who said directly to this couple sitting within 2 feet is us that then needed to walk back up front and ask for a server. The hostess then said when she came back "I'm sorry I thought you were with them (pointing at us.) Wait what??? We are at 2 different tables and she.... sat them there. Such a mess. We went for the Christmas market! It was very pretty outside. I was disappointed in how long it took to get our food. We were waiting well over 45 minutes for a few bratwursts. The cook grilling outside for the whole restaurant was only making about 5 at a time it seemed. Definitely insufficient set up for an event. I kept thinking our food ticket blew away somewhere because they seemed very unorganized. My brother ordered 20 minutes before me and got his food after I did. We had called yesterday to make a reservation and they said it was fully booked. That made sense but we watched about 5 large 'reservation only' tables sit completely empty the whole entire time. We asked if we could sit at one and they said no. Even on our way out we noticed many empty tables indoors with a very long line out the door of people waiting to go to the market. After we waited so long for our food I was a little disgusted that my currywurst was not remotely warm at all and the sauce was not great. Pros- hot chocolate was delicious! Torched marshmallows were a nice touch on top. The six or so vendors were nice. They didn't particularly have German goods for sale. One had a handful of German items.
