Large Tortellini in Spicy Mushroom and Meat Sauce, smothered in Parmesan Cheese, complimentary Garlic Toast on the side. $12.45 plus tax.
    Bradford P.

Apparently, Facebook advertising can work. Recently, an acquaintance checked in to Bucas and Pastas and I was completely unaware of this restaurant. I was further surprised because I know for a fact I have driven past it hundreds of times, it having been in the same location for TWENTY-FIVE years. What I saw when I looked at B&P's page was a concept that I have missed. Cafeteria style pasta and sauce, served up as you like. You pick the container, and you can mix and match from screaming fresh house made pastas and sauces. Anyone who spent any time in Hub Mall in the last century is familiar with this concept, via the ubiquitous "La Pasta," which has done this for years, albeit not as well. Having liked B&P's FB page, I got a notice that the Special of the Day was going to be Tortellini, so tired of my own cooking, I broke isolation for a drive. Like all restaurants, Bucas and Pastas are fighting to stay open during the pandemic, and they have the protocol down. They are playing safe, but the charm of the staff is still on display, and it is easy to keep one's distance whilst picking up your food. If you choose, you can phone your order in and they will deliver it curbside for you. The main selections are a rotating list of house made pastas and sauces, with a lovely selection which they are fully prepared to mix and match for you. I went for the Tortellini with a Spicy Mushroom Cream Sauce, mixed with a some Meat Sauce, just to try. The portions are huge, and my large order was dinner tonight and will be lunch tomorrow. Also included is complimentary Garlic Toast or fresh roll, your choice, and they do not skimp on the Parmesan or chili flakes. They have a good selection of beverages and are licensed for beer and wine. The restaurant itself is cozy, but small and basic. When all this is over I look forward to sitting down for a meal, but for now, I will hit them up for takeout, which seems to be the bulk of their trade, anyway. If you read my reviews, you know that I rarely give out 5 stars on a first visit, but Bucas and Pastas ticked all the boxes for me. The owner and his granddaughter were beautifully charming, and though it was my first time, I felt like a regular. The menu selection is also excellent, with a variety that changes daily. The food is amazing... The Tortellini was as good as any I have tasted, and the sauce... Oh, the sauce. The Spicy Mushroom sauce has a depth and complexity of flavour that took my breath away. The meat sauce was delicious too, but... I have some odd biases when it comes to eating in restaurants. I don't like steak houses because I am too often disappointed and the prices are out of hand. I feel much the same way about pasta joints, especially those that are charging $30 for a plate of noodles and sauce, which frankly are not that hard to replicate Yeah, yeah, I know... your Grandpa smuggled the recipe out of Sicily after WWII, the big one, and.... Yadda, Yadda, Yadda... My list of restaurants where I want to eat pasta is very short, but tonight it grew by one. I give these nice people and their amazing food the highest recommendation. Break up your isolation routine with some takeout. Eat here. Seriously. Eat here. *Note: Bucas and Pastas ARE doing delivery during the Covid Crisis.

Bucas & Pastas has been around for as long as I remember but it's never been on my radar to try. Located directly across from the west end police station and next door to Kazoku Ramen, it's an easy place to spot. Puzzled why I've never stopped by as I've driven by this area a millions times over the years. It's never too late right? They've even been open since 1996, almost 20 years in the biz! Three of us decided to meet up for a quick Tuesday lunch. This is a no frills restaurant - menu is up front and food is served cafeteria style. You pick the type of pasta, sauce and meat that you want and the staff scoop your order on a plate for you. There's a daily special (cheese tortellini when we went). I'm not the biggest fan of these types of restaurants but at least Bucas makes their own pasta and sauces fresh. There's also a side counter where you can purchase these in bulk to take home. We were debating what to order when one of the ladies working the front asked us if it was our first time there and proceeded to speed talk/race her way through all of the different options. Guess that's as good as it gets here. Five types of pasta to choose from (plain, Cajun linguine, whole wheat, pasticcio and tortellini) and eight sauces (sundried tomato, meat sauce, hot Italian sausage, hot creamy mushroom, four cheese, sundried pesto, basil pesto and alfredo). If you're the indecisive type, I'm pretty sure you can ask them to mix and match to your hearts content. - Half pasticcio and half salad ($8.95) - Dbone and I both went with the half pasticcio and half salad. I picked the creamy dill salad, which consisted of cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and red peppers while Dbone opted for the Greek salad. I didn't get much dill flavour, if any at all. For the sauce, I opted for the sundried tomato sauce, which tasted like a generic tomato sauce. They have chili flakes and parmesan at the front counter to give their pasta some much needed seasoning. - Half tortellini and half salad ($9.95) - M went with the tortellini (ring shaped pasta) with hot creamy mushroom sauce and a side of Caesar salad. The mushroom sauce is apparently "spicy" - it had the slightest hint of heat and that's being generous. On a side note, I feel sorry for people that can't tolerate spicy food, you guys are missing out on the good things in life. The tortellini pasta was much better than our pasticcio. B&P is what it is. Cheap place to eat but their food lacks any real depth or flavour. I don't have any plans to come back but if you're a quantity kind of guy/gal, they have an AYCE pasta option for $12.95.

Love this little family ran place. The staff is friendly and make sure you're a happy customer. Most of there food is house made and they have a cool pasta machine to make fresh pasta. You can eat in, take cooked food home or they have a cold section where you can take it home and make yourself. My go to here is there meatballs. They are the best in Edmonton for sure. I order a bunch of them and they give you buns and butter to go with them to make delicious meatball buns. I highly recommend this place.

    Small place big flavour!

This has to be one of the very Best little hole in the wall pasta joints in the city! We used to go here all the time when we were playing football in high school to carb up! It's also a big favorite of the police station across the street. We walking a lot as it's quite small only about 15 tables so you can eat there if you want but the atmosphere is nothing special. They usually have an awesome daily special and a multitude of different pastors and sauces that they will show you in the buffet line. Dylan cover everything was fresh and good and you can mix-and-match your pasta and sauces. They also have an awesome all you can eat option for when you're really hungry it's great because you can have a couple different types of passes and sauces and sample everything. Add a meat ball as well they are to die for. The other really great thing about this place is that you can take it out past it and bring it home. This place is awesome for take out pasta. You can buy many home made sauces and noodles and freeze them for use later or heat up right away. I suggest the spicy mushroom say he and whole wheat bow tie pasta! It's deathly a staple for me if or when you feel like that fresh bowl of hot pasta and you're just too hungry and could eat a horse! Also keeping some of these past is the sauce is in your freezer is a must bring it back ups and awesome ingredients.

I started the meal with the Don Vito cocktail, a spirit forward sweet concoction of Cognac, Bourbon and Limoncello. Immediately felt like it set the perfect tone for dinner. The tasting menu started with four appetizers, the Arancini, Goat Ricotta Crostini, Insalata Siciliana and the Culatello. My favorite was the arancini as it was packed full of melty cheese with so much flavor. The culatello was a crowd favorite and the crostini was a great palate cleanser. For secondi we had the Truffle Gnudi and Paccheri. For people who like meaty flavors go with the paccheri, but I liked the light cheese and truffle of the gnudi. By the time the Pollo Al Mattone came around, I could only manage a mouthful of the succulent brick chicken and the fresh cabbage salad as I was so full and would need to be rolled out of the restaurant. We ended with the Chocolate Budino, which was dark, creamy and delicious. A great tasting menu at a great price, especially compared to Toronto prices!

I like that the bartender just works on drinks for servers and there aren't patrons directly ordering drinks from him to slow the service.

Place has "very fancy" feel and would be good for special events/celebration dinners. Free bread to start was fine but not the best I have had. I prefer mine with butter but the oil/vinegar is probably more typical. We tried the: Calamari: 10/10, great texture, loved that we got 2 sauces to dip in. Fettuccine Tavolino (cheese wheel pasta): 10/10. Boyfriend was not too full after. Pasta was cooked perfectly. Nice cheesy creamy flavor. Ravioli Alla Zucca: 9/10, I can't remember if there were 6 or 7 ravioli in the dish. Very pleasing presentation. In my opinion too many sundried tomatoes. I love that it comes with sundried tomatoes as that added some great tang/flavor. Ravioli themselves were perfectly cooked. Brown butter sauce was excellent and wanted more. Creme Brule: 9/10, exactly as expected, definitely enough to share between 2 people. Affogato: vanilla gelato was 11/10 good to me but boyfriend didn't like the flavor. We both agree the espresso was excellent. Very small portion (too small to share!). Free cookies at the end were fine. Overall food was excellent and I'll be back but to try something different on the menu.

The complimentary bread was great, the martini's good although one glass had far more than the other. I ordered the spaghetti bolognese, and although quite different from what we make at home, was excellent! K had the Alfredo flambé which was fired up tableside. It seems to be a popular option as it happened 6 or 7 times while we dined. They also don't soak you for the privilege of the tableside presentation. It was a little cheesy for K, but excellent nonetheless. Our server Eugenia from Hamburg was excellent, she can serve us anytime. She was attentive, and her timing was exceptional! Gnocchi with pancetta - 10/10, surprising filling and even though the Gnocchi were huge chunks they were well cooked. Waitress recommend Campanella Aragosta - 7/10. If you like spicy it's fine but otherwise the flavor is actually very bland. Pasta itself was unique and well cooked. Large portion. Beef Brisket Agnolotti - 7/10, 8 large ravioli filled with brisket. Sauce was good, ravioli were well cooked but brisket inside was pretty underwhelming. Friend who got this dish was ++ hungry still after and said he would order something else next time for the price. Funghi Cipolla - 8/10, it was as expected. Ricotta cheesecake - cheesecake itself was great with the ricotta taste but crust was soooo bad. So overly thick and dry and considering our waitress failed to give us water the entire meal it was impossible to eat (so dry). Date cake - Unfortunately they didn't have gelato as was advertised on the menu to go with the cake so whipped cream was substituted. Was told this only after we ordered and friend asked for the flavors of gelato. Cake had a few uncooked flour lumps. Flavor was fine but not as flavorful/spice-heavy as I hoped. Sprouts on top looked really messy but tasted fine. Overall not a seamless experience as I would have expected from an establishment of this caliber.
