Came here last week when I had a day to spend in Florence and boy am I glad I did. The place opens at 7 PM and we were outside waiting around 6:50. There were a few people already standing outside and we were second in line to get in and they were asking if we had reservations. Oops! We did not so they let everyone with rsvps in first and luckily they had a few spots for those that did not. They have Michelin guide stickers for several years and it proves to be worthy. Word of advice: Make a reservation!!!! The service here is fantastic, servers and staff were all friendly. I found that coming, my stomach found room to shove a lot of food into. They start with some bread and olive oil. I ordered myself the tagilerini freschi con tartufo, which is basically like buttered spaghetti with fresh shaved truffles. It looks really good and the flavors were not bad. A bit pricey but hey, when on vacation, that's how I roll. Next up, I also ordered a Florentine steak for one, however the waiter was fully assuming I was going to share it. He said it is about 700 grams. He cut the steak up for us, however I ended up demolishing the entire thing. I ordered mine rare and it was fantastic however I did offer some to my friend and she wasn't a fan of mooing steaks. This restaurant was outstanding. We mentioned in the reservation that it was our anniversary and they made sure to take care of us for that with a complimentary glass of prosecco as we sat down. We came for the Steak Florentine and it did not disappoint. We ordered the size for two, they carved it for us right there at the table, and though we had a difficult time finishing it, we still worked through it because it was so delicious. We didn't make reservations and arrived upon opening hours and they accommodated us quickly. Vibe: White tablecloths, dressed up waiters with a maitre d. Service: I don't know if our waiter had something against us at first- but it seemed like he was not happy to be working that night. Buca Mario was one of my husband and I's favorites during our time in Florence. The atmosphere is very cool as the restaurant is underground basically so the ceiling is low and the doorways are lower. Service was a little slow to start but once they got going it was too notch, we absolutely loved our server - I wish I knew his name! We each ordered dirty martinis which were hard to come by in Italy as most people weren't sure what we meant by "dirty". Our server absolutely crushed it by bringing us a side of olive juice to pour in as we wanted - it was a dream! We got the prosciutto with balsamic app and it was great. My husband got the truffle pasta and it was good but was missing something we couldn't quite put our finger on. Sono una dei tuoi più grandi ammiratori!!! ----- A place like Buca Mario hardly needs any more reviews--especially when 99% of the hotels all over Florence and travel guides recommend this restaurant for its great vibe and superior service, not to mention the mouthwatering meats. But in any case, here's my take: I've been here three times, three separate occasions. Once in 2014 while I was studying abroad and celebrating a friend's birthday. Another time while my mother came to visit, and lastly, I was here in May 2018. The first two occasions I ordered the fried zucchini flowers as appetizers, which were deliciously crispy and perfectly battered. The third time, I ordered a simple salad to attempt to balance out the three pounds of meat I was about to inhale. I recommend the florentine steak for 2 if you're a party of three, because it's really more for three if no one in your party is an exceptional meat eater. A Florentine Steak, by the way, is a T-Bone steak. Just a warning in case someone is wary of rare meat: the steak was very rare when it arrived. I'm more of a medium-rare gal myself, but the quality of the meat makes it irresistible to argue with them on how they should cook this T-Bone. There's a unique buttery flavor to the steak, and they season it very simply with just olive oil, salt and pepper right before plating it. There's no A1 steak sauce here, so please don't embarrass yourself and ask for any! (And God forbid, KETCHUP!) If you ask for a wine recommendation, I think you should at least help them guide you by selecting either White or Red (they won't judge if you have white with your steak), and letting them know if you'd like a dry wine, or more fruity/sweet wine. Even the second-cheapest bottle of red was delicious and amazingly smooth (around 45 Euro). I'm not a huge red wine drinker, but I could really see why people go head over heels when pairing meat and wine together! I also recommend you look up some typical Itailan phrases to better connect with your waiter! I had a bit of dusty Italian phrases still rattling around my head and used them to my full advantage, especially because I wanted to take some Foodie Go-Pro-esque video shots of the ginormous steak and I didn't want to seem too annoying. (Just look at the table behind us! Their faces were identical to our own) A simply "Grazie mille", or "...per favore" will stretch further than you'd think. Also, please don't try to fight any urge to resist getting dessert when they wheel the cart towards you. Just go for it! You've gotten this far in your gastronomic journey, why not go for the whole nine yards?! (My recommendation is the strawberry cake with the whipped cream, though they have a slightly rotating dessert menu, I believe.) PS. At the end of your meal, you will receive either a box of biscotti or an apron! The females in my party all received an apron, and I asked if my brother could receive a box of biscuits (he hadn't received anything), to which the host quickly and very gladly helped accommodate. Found this on TripAdvisor and don't really understand all of the hype. We started with the caprese salad. The tomatoes didn't have much flavor and wasn't too impressed with the mozzarella either. The lasagna was decent; it was meaty and cheesy, but at 15 euros, was expecting something much better. We also tried the spaghetti Pomodoro which was also pretty bland. We drenched the spaghetti in parmesan cheese to make it more palatable. After having much more flavorful and al dente pastas at places like Dal Moro's, was a little disappointed by the pasta here, especially considering this was double the price. Maybe we ordered wrong? TL;DR - go here now. Out of this world delicious. It took me 11 years to return to Italy, and this place was the only restaurant I frequented both trips, with over a decade in between. I have a tale for you, fellow Yelpers. It is an 11 year tale, full of Italian dreams, and it begins and ends at this lovely restaurant. 11 years ago an 18 year old me took her first trip abroad, to Italy. We ate at Buca Mario during our time in Firenze, and it was the best food I had ever eaten. Combined with the service, it was our best meal the entire two weeks we were in Italy. We actually came back a second night - it was that delicious. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when my husband and I found ourselves in my favorite city in the world, after over a decade of dreaming of returning. It was my 29th birthday. We'd been planning the trip for almost a year. I had one birthday request - a dinner at Buca Mario. We called and made a reservation the night before (I HIGHLY recommend that, as they do get booked up - don't worry, they speak fabulous English, both on the phone and in person), and come 7:30 pm, found ourselves in the lovely, iconic wine cellar like atmosphere of the restaurant that I remembered so vividly from 11 years before. The service and food were exactly as I remembered - delicious, charming, Italian - through and through. My husband and I shared the spreads appetizer - chicken liver pate (some of the best I've ever tasted), mushroom spread, black olive tapenade, and a bruschetta tomato mixture. Perfect start to the meal. He had the lasagna, which he proclaimed was the best he'd ever tasted (don't tell his mother...), and I had the wild boar pasta. Out of this world delicious. We shared a bottle of the house red, and it paired perfectly. We ended the night with a shared slice of fruit tart and limoncello, which was the best sweet ending to an excellent meal. I CAN'T BELIEVE WE ATE (ALMOST) THE WHOLE THING. We were sent to Florence with advice from a friend: "you must make reservations for the Florentine Steak (a t-bone) at Buca Mario" and so we did. Greeted warmly by waiters ringing out "buona sera" as we serpentined through one small dining room after another, we sat down and got straight to ordering. Crostini with different toppings (chicken liver, mushroom, olive, tomato) and tomato and bread soup to start, followed by the steak and artichokes. And a bottle of Chianti. Of course. With the exception of the appetizers this was a stellar experience, with pleasant and nice wait staff. Here's the thing about the tomato and bread soup: I thought it tasted likeAmerican canned tomato sauce and so was disappointed with lack of flavor. Absolutely the best meal I had in Florence! In a small way, it was a good thing they had a 1 hour and 45 minute wait when we arrived at 8pm on the Thursday after Christmas. That forced us to walk around, explore Florence and work up a huge appetite bc when we got seated in this very traditional, low ceiling Florence restaurant we could see by the dishes around us that our pants were going to be stretched to their limits! The bread, as with most places we ate at in Italy, was very rustic and dry (not a fan of the bread....)....BUT oh my sweet delicious goodness - soon, out came our dishes and it was something beautiful. How did it all taste? Like little angels dancing on my taste buds while sprinkling fairy dust on my mouth. I seriously don't know how else to describe it. M husband said that was the best steak he had in his life. In his 33 years of consuming meat (I would tout him as a picky meat eater and a meat expert) he said that was the best. Mind. Blown. And my Osso Buco? I'm STILL talking about it to anyone who will listen. I immediately messaged all my foodie friends back home waking them up, interrupting their days and making them envious of the falling off the bone veal perfectly cooked and smothered in a beautiful tomato sauce. The beans and potatoes were amazing partners to the veal. And the marrow....oh that marrow was something divine. Just giant spoonfuls of luscious marrow that I spread onto my bread and slurped up. The Best Dining Experience we had in Florence!! We love Buca Mario!! Buca Mario was recommended by our hotel concierge and it was also listed as one of Florence's must try by Fodor's Choice. We ordered the Fettuccine Buca Mario with tomato,prosciutto mushrooms,peas and cream) and split it, and it was delicious! For a main, I ordered the chicken cataccorie and was mind blowingly good! It was quite possibly the best meal Ive ever had! The restaurant is rather large and has a lovely warm ambiance to it. There are many different rooms with different styles in them, but all of them are cozy and make you feel right at home sitting at your family's kitchen table. "As good as it gets" in Italy, goddamn that Florentine steak is tasty. Like many others, Buca Mario was recommended by the hotel when we asked for Florentine steak. Can't get over it, I'm still impressed. How could such a big fat massive piece of steak be so full of flavour mmmmmmmm And when I say massive, it's bloody massive. Depending on how many people the steak is for, it only gets bigger, they're not separate cuts! So we ordered a steak for 2 and that's what you see in the picture that I've uploaded. Yes, sure, there's also a massive T-Bone but even then, it's what? 6cm thick and at least 800g of meat? Sheesh. I also have to mention that it is very red and rare, so since we were a bit of a wuss we asked if it could be a little more cooked and it still appeared more rare than medium-rare. Nonetheless it was JUICY-AS ahhh~ Then came the dessert which they wheeled around on a cart to showcase what's special for the day. Tiramisu with cream and strawberries. To the friendly cab driver in Florence who recommended this place - grazie mille! After this recommendation, we cross-checked Yelp and agreed to try to eat dinner at Buca Mario without a reservation. Luckily, they had a table for us because it turned out to be one of my most memorable dinners! Upon entering the rustic Tuscan restaurant, you are greeted by at least 10 "Buona sera"s (good evening). In addition to the welcoming staff and charming atmosphere, the food is amazing! We ordered: - a basic salad - some sort of ravioli-like stuffed pasta (I forgot the name in Italian) with sage and butter - veal ossobucco - steak fiorentina for one Of course we also ordered wine and dessert as recommended by our server and while everything was great, the highlight was definitely the pasta dish. I wish I remember the exact name, but your waiter will know what you mean if you ask for some pasta filled with cheese with sage (or you can show the server the photo I posted of it). Anyways, the pasta was the best pasta I have ever had hands down. In fact, we loved it so much, on our way out, we made a reservation for the following night for dinner (we only stayed 2 nights in Florence total, both dinners were here)! The second time, we focused on pasta, and ordered simple spaghetti, lasagne, and that same sage pasta dish from the day before. Of course, it was all good, but the best was the sage pasta dish and the lasagne!
