Today my friend & I shared the cheddar cauliflower & tarragon chicken salad. Apparently they put the chicken on sourdough today since they were out of the normal bread, but honestly it was delicious and felt like it was meant to be on sourdough so no complaints here! The food is awesome and I was glad the group I was with was into sharing. I don't think I had a bad bite. Everything was good! From the au jus that I had to the curry chicken sandwich, biscuits/gravy, italian, and turkey trot ordered elsewhere at our table. The breads were also amazing! And a great starter as the food took a little while to arrive. But the breads were so good, we ordered some to go (though a few were already sold out when we did) To be fair, it was busy and packed when we visited (not ample seating and had a little wait). And our party of six was likely placed at a table for four, so it was a little cramped & uncomfortable. Great food here. You've probably driven past and seen a modest line of people waiting. I wish I could say that the line moves quickly but it simply doesn't. Is it worth waiting in line for more than 15m? Absolutely not. But again, the food is great. Street parking though is always tricky depending on the time of your visit. Bacon Egg and Cheese - For a breakfast sandwich, it smacks. I wasn't so certain about the bread ratio but I was so wrong-- the roll is perfectly soft, and the egg, bacon, and cheese come together perfectly. No real notes here. Sausage Egg and Cheese - If you like sausage, get this one. But if you're undecided, just go with bacon. I'll get myself a blood orange donut every now and again. I came back for breakfast because I was very curious about the potato crisp with horseradish cream and I was not disappointed. Think of a Jewish diner's 21st century latke and you'll understand. Usually latkes are a bit soggy and served with sour cream and applesauce. Personally, I never liked it that way. The item lives up to the "crisp" in its name and now I can't imagine having even a hash brown without some horseradish for bite. We got there early so we were limited to the breakfast morning (cold sandwiches available at 10 am and the rest at 11 am). We tried the biscuits and gravy, the toast and jam, bacon, sausage, crisp, and the cinnamon bun. Everything was heavy, decadent, and very good. I recently revisited Bub and Grandma's after a long gap. I remembered enjoying their breakfast sandwich years ago, and I wanted to try more of their menu. I ended up arriving right before they started serving their lunch menu, so I ended up just getting a few baked goods including a cinnamon roll and a raspberry donut. The cinnamon roll was squishy and covered with a hefty amount of frosting. I'm happy I ate the roll at the restaurant so I could be near a bunch of napkins as I ate the gooey but tasty pastry. I was in between that or their burger; I had let our waitress decide for me as she said both of them were good and I wanted to be surprised. Hands down , the best fish sandwich I've ever had. Ordered at the to go window because there was a wait for sit down service. Employee was friendly and happily gave us their recommendations. There is outdoor seating you're welcome to enjoy your meal at. Our food was out in less than five minutes, surprisingly fast. Bread is made in house and it was delightful. Fluffy, fresh, and balanced the fillings well. The tuna sandwich had a nice slice of iceberg lettuce which gave it a great crunch and mouthfeel. Brisket was balanced with fruit and a solid mustard. Both were ample in size. The sides were on point. The artichoke antipasti had a lot of pearl couscous but the marinated artichoke chunks were big too. Celery salad stole the show. I don't always like that I fall for the hype, but I do love it when it pays off. Finally drove over to Bub And Grandma's to try their meatloaf sandwich (from the menu: "beef & pork meatloaf, fennel buttermilk salad, orange pomegranate glaze, chip shake, sweet pickles, mayo, mustard, on challah"), and it lived up to the TikTok praise. The meatloaf itself was tasty, and no so thick that it made the sandwich hard to eat, while the salad added a nice vinegar-y flavor that worked well with the mayo and mustard. It was also a good sized sandwich. While, as I said, it wasn't too much, it also wasn't too little. No sides or dessert required. I also got an iced latte, as I always do, and while it was flavorful, and thankfully not too milky, it also had a bit too much ice. As for the place itself, it was clean, and had a fun diner vibe. It wasn't huge, which probably means there's lines for brunch on the weekend, but when I went -- noon on a Wednesday -- I waited only a moment, though I did have to sit at the counter. The staff were also really nice, though it did take a moment for my waiter to notice me sitting at the counter. Two other things worth mentioning. First, the napkins were the small, flimsy kind you get from a napkin dispenser, which was an issue because the meatloaf sandwich can be a bit on the messy side. Good thing there one of the napkin dispensers was right in front of me, and full, because I used a lot of them. Second, parking is an issue. It's only street parking; I had to swing around the block a couple times before I found a spot. Which, again, makes me not want to go there on a weekend. I've been here for breakfast and lunch and was curious to check out the dinner scene. The seasonings were unique and complementary. Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls with bulgur, sauerkraut, kidney beans, dill Nice flavor and balance of ingredients. Hands down, the BREAD lives up to the hype. Seriously, the bread makes the sandwiches here. The kaiser, challah, and focaccia breads are all delish. You can taste the freshness when your teeth sink into each bite. On top of the selection of freshly baked breads, I'm a fan of their RAINBOW Sandwich when I'm on my veggie kicks. It's got sprouts, avocado, curried tofu, and pickled vegetables. I'm an even bigger fan of their HOT MEATLOAF on Challah bread. The description made me skeptical at first--with ingredients like orange pomegranate glaze, buttermilk fennel salad, sweet pickles, and a potato chip shake. It seemed to be a sandwich created by accident while puffing on too much Pineapple Express. Maybe so. But hey, it was so dang good! When I actually dug into it, I was quite pleased with this beef & pork meatloaf recipe. As for sides, their potato salad is simple yet the egg, celery, and creamy dressing do the trick. The CURRIED CHICKEN SALAD is my next go-to when I'm not feeling as gluttonous. The curried chicken breast is tender and it has a good mix of dill, almonds, lettuce, mandarins, celery, and cucumber. For drinks, you can order freshly brewed coffees and brews from Solarc or Highland Park Breweries. Personally, I like the retro/throwback, non-alcoholic drinks with this type of diner food. There's Dr. Brown's Cherry soda (my fave), Martinelli's Apple Juice (in the apple bottle), Cock & Bull Ginger Ale, and Dad's Root Beer. Fresh squeezed OJ and Lemonade from Rick's Produce is a splurge, but it's liquid Vitamin C and you're supporting a small-batch California farmer. Glassellland has gotten a bit more popular since Bub & Grandma's moved into our neighborhood. News has gotten out about the tasty breads and all the hip kids in town hang out here, so it's best to expect some kind of wait here. The vibe is always busy. Yet no matter when I've gone, I've been lucky enough to somehow bypass the long wait times, but watch the diner fill up by the time I leave. Anyways, I stopped by for some morning treats before work and I am so happy I did. They were so soft and flavorful. I ended up getting the cinnamon roll, which has the perfect amount of frosting. It was cream cheese flavored and just the right amount. The cinnamon donut had the right amount of sugar and cinnamon and was soft. Finally got to try the famous Bub and Grandma's restaurant after eating only their bread in so many different cafes! I went for breakfast at about 8 AM and I was surprised by how many people were in the restaurant. Granted, there wasn't a line out the door, but most of the booths, if not all, were taken. As I was enjoying breakfast by myself, I was taken to their bar seating. I really liked my seat, as I wasn't facing any other patron and my view had various chefs preparing food for the entire restaurant. I opted for the breakfast plate and an endless house drip. The coffee here is solid, nothing to write home about but definitely good. The breakfast was also very solid, and the bread, again, became the star of the show. The little bit of bacon grease they used to toast the bread made it taste even better! The service was also good and the waitress was also very friendly. Although I personally believe this is a really nice place and the sandwiches are very good, I want to give my very personal opinion in regard to the sourdough bread they make. I also have to emphasize that making bread is not as simple as it may seem, especially with sourdough but it could definitely be improved. I bought a "house bread" that claims to contain a percentage of rye and to have a tangy flavor profile. However, the final product seems to me more like an over-fermented loaf than the result of a well-balanced sourdough process. When a sourdough starter is allowed to mature too far and begins to run out of available food, its acidity and fermentation byproducts can become more pronounced, often producing a sharper, more acidic or alcoholic aroma. If that overly mature starter is then used in the dough, it can contribute to an excessively acidic and over-fermented final product. This also seems to be reflected in the crumb. The crumb is neither particularly uniform nor well-developed in a three-dimensional sense. Instead, there are large, irregular open areas concentrated along the edges near the crust. This can be consistent with excessive fermentation and uneven gas retention, although other factors such as shaping and dough tension can also contribute to this type of crumb structure. If the starter being used is rye-based and additional rye flour is incorporated into the dough, fermentation can become more active and the dough structure can behave differently from an all-wheat dough. Rye also has a significant effect on gluten development and gas retention. For that reason, the fermentation schedule needs to be adjusted accordingly, and the dough should not necessarily be subjected to an excessively long cold bulk fermentation. Perhaps the process being used for these breads is something along the lines of feeding the sourdough starter approximately four hours before mixing the dough, preparing the dough, and then placing it directly into the refrigerator for an extended cold bulk fermentation. If that is indeed the process, it could certainly produce a more pronounced acidic profile. However, if the fermentation is allowed to proceed too far, the result may be an over-fermented loaf with excessive acidity and poor crumb structure rather than a well-balanced sourdough bread. In my view, the goal should not simply be to maximize acidity. A well-balanced sourdough bread should ideally combine acidity with fermentation-derived aromas, good dough strength, even gas distribution, and a well-developed crumb structure. read more

I posted a good review of B&G's breakfast fare. But today I went for lunch with friends and it was so very good. We started with the pickle plate. Two kinds of cucumber pickles and pickled tomatoes. Yum. I got a BLT with avocado which was great on toasted B&G bread of course. My friends got a curry chicken sandwich and a meatloaf sandwich. Both were reportedly also great and they looked good too (see pics). We ended by ordering a slice of carrot cake that was just perfection and a raspberry donut which I didn't try but I'm pretty sure it was also fantastic. A couple tasty Cold brew iced coffees to go and we were out of there. This place just can't miss. I miss the matzo ball soup but you can't have everything I guess. I happened to be in town and my friend suggested grabbing lunch here. It's a cute little place near Los Feliz with a really warm ambience. As far as the food goes, both of our sandwiches were tasty and came out hot and within a decent amount of time. Now, LA can be notoriously pricey and while Bub and Grandma's isn't the cheapest option, it definitely blows something like Jersey Mike's out of the order which, in today's economy, is basically the same price. Service wise, the day we had lunch was pretty quiet and a touch slow, but the staff wasn't phoning it in and were attentive to our needs. I heard they supply bread to a lot of popular restaurants around LA and was craving some pastries so I stopped by. i got the Morning Heart and Crimson Hearts Plum Donut and wow they were so good! the morning bun is like a cinnamon roll's chic older sister. It's crunchy like a croissant with cinnamon in between the folds and sugar dusted on top. The Plum donut was a light fluffy donut with a plum glaze on top. Even if you haven't been to this location, there's a good chance you've had their bread or other baked goods at one of your favorite restaurants around the city. I personally haven't been able to have a sit down meal here, but I've had plenty of their stuff around town and one of my good buddies often brings bread from this place to group get-togethers. My recent visit/experience here was really just to pick up some bread at the window. That was a line, but it moved fairly quickly. I wanted to just grab a sesame baguette. You are able to look inside the restaurant while waiting in line and the vibe reminds me of an East Coast deli. The person at the window was very friendly. I ordered my bread and I was on my way. I really wanna come back and truly experience this place for a full meal while getting to sit in the main room, etc. The place looks great and I've heard good things about their breakfast sandwiches and sandwiches in general. I can't tell you how many friends have recommended Bub and Grandma's so I finally found myself in the area and decided to check it out. I was familiar with their bread which several delis and restaurants use. But I'd never eaten at their location. We were quickly seated and began to peruse the menu. Our server, while polite, didn't seem like she wanted to be there. When asked what she recommended, she grumbled through a few things, obviously not really interested in truly helping us. So we asked for a couple of minutes and decided to order a couple of sandwiches and a couple of sides. We chose the Brisket Sandwich and the Curried Chicken Sandwich along with sides of Shredded Carrots & Beets and Marinated olives and Almonds. They were delicious. The Brisket was our favorite, hands down. It was lovely sliced brisket topped with arugula, red onion and a killer apple mostarda served on a sub roll. The chicken salad was quite flavorful as it was mixed with almonds, mandarin orange pieces, celery, cucumber and dill on seeded bread. The sides were quite interesting. The carrots and beets were shredded and tossed in a lemon dressing and topped with chives. The olives were a nice mix of types and mixed with orange peel, olive oil, pepper relish, celery and crunch Marcona almonds. The portions were quite filling. All in all, we enjoyed our meal. Sadly, the service was two thumbs down thus the 3 stars. She only came by our table to check on us one time. When we wanted the check, I had to go find her. But on the way out, we decided to grab some pastries. The person behind the counter was upbeat and cheerful, and she helped us pick the right mix of pastries to take home. Was recommended Bub and Grandma's by the sandwich king himself, Owen Han, after meeting him at a book signing, so naturally, I had to go STAT. We made our way over after a 14 mile bike ride along the LA River aka had a voracious appetite. We arrived shortly after 2p and were seated soon thereafter. The restaurant seemed to be clearing out as they close at 3p. We ordered and shared a roast beef sandwich and curried chicken sandwich. Take home goodies included carrot cake, chocolate chip cookie, and a croissant. (Hack: all baked goods and breads are 15% off between 2p-3p). Both sandwiches were very different in flavor profile and both very good; the roast beef had a unique wasabi aioli that stood out and the curried chicken had a nice variation in textures. The bread was hands down the best part. Our servers were friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed the hipster diner vibe and open environment.
