She's always been just a 5-minute drive from my place. Today, I decided to follow Grace from Fort Mill to her new salon, Salon 131, in lovely downtown Matthews. (Of course, I had to follow Grace! She's a treasure.) The drive was a quick 30 minutes from Fort Mill, and the salon is nestled right in the heart of downtown Matthews. It's right next to a café and surrounded by restaurants and local shops. I'm already excited to explore the area more when I visit next. The salon itself was welcoming and spacious, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Today, Grace gave me the works--full highlights and a haircut! I left feeling so cute, lighter, and like I'd turned back the clock ten years. Grace is such a genuine, kind, and down-to-earth person. She really listens and knows exactly what my hair needs. Plus, she cares deeply about me and my family. As a 55-year-old with fine, thinning hair, I'm very picky about hairstylists. I want someone who listens but who also knows the latest styles and trends. With Grace, I get all that and more. The salon was lovely and had beautiful flowers and artwork everywhere. I could tell that a lot of thought and love was put into every detail. After I walked in I was promptly greeted by my stylist Amanda and was asked if I wanted a coffee, water or a snack. Once I was settled comfortably in the chair Amanda listened to what I wanted and made suggestions that would compliment the look I was going for. I can't say how happy I am with the amazing cut and highlight! She was able to give my hair so much depth and volume. I absolutely love my new look and will be back to see Amanda again!

This time, I decided to try a salon closer to home, hoping that if I liked the results, it would become my new regular salon. To avoid any miscommunication, I showed the stylist a reference photo and asked for a haircut similar to it. Unfortunately, the final result looked nothing like the picture. When I pointed out that the haircut was very different from what I had requested, the stylist told me it was because I have a wider face and a shorter neck. While I understand that every haircut should be adapted to a person's features, this explanation didn't justify how different the result was. Looking in the mirror, I was heartbroken. The hair was cut shorter than I wanted, the shape was uneven, and it looked poorly executed. I had already decided I would need to find another salon to try to fix it. The owner later stepped in and did her best to reshape the haircut. I truly appreciate her effort, and the final result was an improvement. However, there was only so much she could do after the hair had already been cut, and it still not looked like the style I had asked for. I still left a 20% tip because everyone was polite and treated me kindly. But not for the quality of the haircut.

However, I had also attended two appointments earlier this year (January and February 2026) without formally confirming and did not experience any issues or cancellations. When I asked how many appointments I had missed, I was told there was only the one on record. The owner later left a voicemail explaining that my stylist had an opportunity to take a color guest and that they decided to cancel my wash/haircut appointment because I had not confirmed. I understand businesses need policies, but I was disappointed by the inconsistency in how the policy was applied. As a long-term client with only one missed appointment on record, I felt my history with the salon was not taken into consideration.

On top of that, it was uncomfortable to hear clients being discussed after they left -- something that should never happen in a professional environment. There's been a lot of staff turnover recently, and it's not hard to understand why. It's sad to see this kind of culture in a small community like Waxhaw, where most salons take pride in treating everyone with respect.
