I usually go to Brug at the Ala Moana locations. It was my first time at this location. We stopped by in the morning to get some pastries for breakfast. My hubby picked out two pastries and I got the ham & cheese croissant $4.50. The croissant was good and flaky. Today, I felt like getting something savory. There was a pastry with fruit on top that was calling my name. I'll be sure to get it next time. They also sell coffee and soft serve ice cream here. read more

It has been a while since I last visited Brug and a few things have changed since then. I am very happy to see they've stopped packaging each pastry individually in plastic bags! And with that, the pastries are no longer in open shelves; they're now encased. (Honestly if they were still using so much single-use plastics I would have looked elsewhere.) Sweet or Savory... That's the question whenever you approach BRUG Bakery and that's what i was deciding as I was in the area of Manoa Marketplace. Located in the backside of the Marketplace right beside the playground but as it's 4pm which is pretty late for this bakery I was surprised to find it still open and though many of its selections are gone was happy to still see many yummy choices. As i checked in with Yelp there is an offer for a free pastry with $15 purchase which i didn't do today but is a great offer that I hope to remember in the future to redeem. As I entered was surprised to see how much smaller this location is but does seem to offer quite bit more items like crafted coffee and soft serve or even better combine them for an affogato! I did find a couple items one for tomorrow one for a snack and as I checked out the staff was such a delight as we talked about random subjects and just fell in love with this location especially with convenient free parking in the Marketplace. I didn't even realize Manoa Marketplace had a Brug Bakery. I usually visit the Pearlridge and Ala Moana locations, and in comparison, this location is significantly smaller. They still had a good selection of baked goods, but most importantly, they had my favorites in stock. Many Yelp reviews mention rude staff. Thought it was just a bad day for me but seems like rude staff is a pattern here for other customers too according to the reviews. We come here so often and staff has mostly been neutral- not friendly or not outrageously rude but the older lady who serviced today was beyond rude. Trying to be a responsible customer, I returned the tongs to the shelf where I took it from; and when the lady rang me up, she questioned "where are your tongs?" To which I replied; I returned it. She went on with her lecture, saying "I need to sanitize it! You need to give it to me". Sure, I'd be more than happy to do that and abide by your rules, but customers don't need to be lectured and sneered at with an attitude. Not to mention she continued to glare at me until I turned around and left the store (so no clue if that one way staring contest ended at that point)... Actually in hindsight, the exchange was actually hilarious- it reminds me of a movie scene where an angry old lady is releasing any pent up negative energy just to have a "I'm gonna stare you down" contest with the unlucky customer of the day. Bread quality wise- no match with Okayama Kobo in Kakaako. But Brug is convenient hence they continue to get my business. Otherwise, it'd be a thing of the past. Especially with the recent encounters. And management, take away your tipping option. Your staff is bagging pastries. There's no service that warrants tipping. Pay them decently and stop relying on customers to fund their food on the table. read more

I was visiting from Las Vegas and passed by Brug while in the plaza it's located in. I was immediately greeted by the workers. It's a cute walk in bakery with a huge assortment of pastries, bread, sweets. I purchased a cinnamon sugar mochi donut and a bear filled with chocolate cream for my flight back home. They were individually wrapped and were fresh. They both tasted delicious and were not too sweet. I wish I knew about Brug on my first day in Hawaii. I would have gone daily to get a morning pastry. I found it on the day before I was leaving to go back home, but I'll definitely return on my next trip. What a cute and unique bakery to satisfy sweet tooth cravings. read more

The matcha and red bean bread is so good that I went back the next day to buy all the loaves they had. I originally thought $9 was pricey but because it was so dense and flavorful, it was worth it. Passed by today (Saturday) 7 minutes before closing and tried to buy bread since there was still a good amount left on the shelves, but to my surprise the door was already locked and the employee was talking on her phone (airpods in). Another man who was trying to buy bread came and knocked on the glass to get her attention and she approached the door with her keys but then made an X with her hands and walked away to continue chatting on her phone! Despite the hours printed on the door stating that they're open Monday-Saturday from 8:00 - 18:00, the other potential customer & I had to walk away empty handed. I understand closing early if you have nothing to sell but there was still a LOT of bread left on the shelves. Considering they're closed on Sundays I would assume they'd want to sell as much of their inventory as possible before that, but I guess the Manoa location doesn't care about revenue or customers. read more

I have yet to try the soft serve. Today the machine was not working. I ordered the coffee jelly with milk. I still have to poke it with the straw. Wednesday is senior discount day. Good pasteries but near the end of the day the selection thins out. Staff is usually friendly at this location. I am slowly adding up points on their reward program. I love this BRUG as much as I love the other BRUGs I've been to on island; most likely the most consistent bread shop you could ever find. It's one of the smallest BRUG shops so they don't have a lot of wiggle room for shelf space so that does take away the opportunity to experiment or open their menu for more options, but that's okay because the daily breads they serve is the reason why you go to BRUG. You go for your classics, but pick up a new seasonal item while waiting in line. Speaking of, this BRUG shop is very small so depending on the line, you might have to wait outside. I do wish this shop would open an hour earlier to catch more of the morning crowd faster (like me) since theres a Sbux across the street. But I totally understand if it's a staffing issue, shout out to the one male employee holding the fort on 12/22! He was stocking, ringing, and customer serving all with a smile and great attitude and he was....getting his bread LOL. Is that phrase too old already? Anyways, this is the third or fourth BRUG I've reviewed and they're all amazing, so give this one a try if Ala Moana is too crowded for you and you're in the area! read more

This is probably the smallest Brug I have been to but it still carried a lot of different pastries. I even got a couple of things I haven't seen in ages at the Pearlridge or Ala Moana location. Some helpful to open door since I always have the stroller...but I can manage regardless. Baby likes the sausage roll...but I eat the sausage. Some I like...some not as much. Japanese baked goods in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii... My friend, Milton, posted a photo of a cute cat bread from Brug Bakery. I had to go to investigate. Located on the ground level of Manoa Marketplace, Brug Bakery shares the free parking lot with many businesses such as Longs Drugs, Island Manapua, Manoa Sushi, and Kay's Crackseed. I visited on 4-10-23 when construction was in the works. It made parking a bit challenging. Finding the entrance was almost like a maze - haha! The cozy, clean shop was operated by a friendly gal. She was efficient and polite! I followed directions: use tongs to grab the individually wrapped pastries and place them on a tray. Gosh - there were so many cute selections. I had to get the bear (filled with chocolate custard) and the cat (strawberry cream filling). The Neko Danish Bread was shaped like a cat's head. The package had the face printed on two sides - black on one side and white on the other. Very clever! All of the pastries were soft and not too sweet! I also got the Onion Roll and Shrimp with Brussels Sprout Bun. I liked these savory pastries, too! I'm glad that I don't live close by! However, if I'm in the area, I might get some baked goods for gifts! I like this bakery and have picked up many items many times a week. But I got to say just yesterday that the Custard bun just had a smear of custard which was all dried up. I like mine like a malasada filled size, a nice custard filled. Also the Apple bun was filled only with a Apple sauce, there were no apple Bites at all, just like my grandmama's apple sauce! Yuck. But the Dark Chocolate croissants was delicious as always. But won't buy the custard or apple again. read more

Went there on a rainy weekday just around lunchtime. The parking lot was full but quick turnaround so it was easy to snag a fairly good space (the parking gods were kind on this rainy day). There are a lot of food places and people seemed to be at each spot so there was no crowd at any of the food establishments. Ever been to a restaurant that has lines out the door while the next door eatery is empty? Always feel sorry for the diner with no one, but not sorry enough to patronize them. Anyway, the woman holding down the fort at this location was polite and greeted me. I was looking for the cream bun topped with coconut flakes but they didn't have it. She pointed out another cream bun so I took it and a half loaf of bread. This place seems smaller with less options than Ala Moana or Pearl Ridge. About the size of Kahala, yet Kahala seems to carry more product. I'm not sure why the bread is thickly cut. Brig has a sister bakery that has Mana bread that is sliced thinner. read more

The pastries there are alway excellent! No matter which one I have I am never disappointed. There was a young man there that was so joyful! That is very rare now days. We absolutely love this little bakery tucked away on the Manoa Marketplace. It's got that friendly neighborhood feeling that I almost expect someone to yell out "Norm"! Okay, dating myself here. LOL! The staff are extremely helpful and every suggestion they've made has been really tasty. Our favorites are the Toast Bread, which just happens to be vegan and absolutely yummy Japanese bread, the onion roll, and cinnamon monkey bread. This October, they've got an absolutely amazing special, the Cinnamon Custard Croissant Muffin. Good gracious, it's to die for! Don't know why they call it a muffin except maybe the shape. There's no way it tastes anything like a muffin. Go today and try one! You'll be going back before the end of October to get more! UPDATE: Decided to try freezing the Cinnamon Custard Croissant Muffin since it was an October special, and it freezes perfectly! We defrosted them, threw them in the toaster oven, and viola! This is my third time coming to this location and every time I've come in, the staff is extremely rude and they have no personality. No one greets you or acknowledges your presence when you walk in. When paying the cashier had no personality and only spoke to tell me my total. I went to eat my pastries on the playground and when I went back in to get napkins the girl was bagging bread and saw me but continued to walk past to get another loaf with no acknowledgement. I just recently found out that Brug bakery has a location in Mānoa marketplace. It's conveniently located in the small shops between Safeway and Longs drugs. They only allow two people in at a time due to Covid restrictions. Typically there's a short line waiting outside. It's a pretty small shop. Compared to another Brug bakeries like the one in Ala Moana, this one is definitely smaller and has limited options, but still great fresh locally made pastries. We picked out several pastries including the almond chocolate croissant, Matcha mochi doughnut, pumpkin mochi doughnut, pastrami and cheese danish, strawberry danish, and the blueberry and cream pastry. Very fresh tasting. Some of them are very delicious like the almond chocolate croissant, although the matcha mochi doughnut, didn't really taste much like Matcha but just sweet. I've avoided posting a review of Brug's Manoa Marketplace location because I go there so often. I know that's not a valid excuse and a "check-in" doesn't always suffice. Brug's Manoa staff are always so customer friendly and helpful. If they've run out of one of your favorite savory pastries they suggest alternatives to consider. They offer a great selection of savory and sweet pastries and breads. I try to get there when they open or just after noon when another round of baked goods come out of the oven for the afternoon crowd. My grandkids lean towards the savories: arabiki roll, pastrami croissants, bacon epi, and their assorted mini pizzas. Wife loves their walnut roll for breakfast and I go for the onion roll with bits of bacon nestled inside. For the best selection I'd advise you going early or midday. Only 2 people are allowed inside at a time and masks are mandatory. They close at 6:00 pm and arriving after 4:30 pm could be a crap shoot. read more

IMHO it's the best bakery in town. It's really not that of a big secret on why as the owner proudly announced they import flour from Japan during a Yelp event many years back. The high quality flour makes a big difference across the board, gives their baked goods a solid substantial "density". Using high quality ingredients such as this adds additional costs as the prices are slightly higher than your typical bakery. Our favs, blueberry, peach, custard danish. But our all time fav is the cranberry formage bread, perfect with the cream cheese in the middle with a hint of maple syrup. Big bonus, check in and get a free choice with a purchase of $10 or more. Not good if you have an aversion to guten or on a low carb diet, but hey why not splurge once in a while? read more

Brug is one of my family's favorite Japanese bakeries. We usually go to the ones at Ala Moana but this location is also conveniently located in Manoa Marketplace. Brug had pumpkin and custard pies available for pre-order for Thanksgiving. We tried to place the order online like their Instagram advised but was not able to. We called this location and asked about pre-orders. They said they had to take down the online form because many locations were already at max capacity. However, the lady I spoke to said they could still take pre-orders for Manoa location. I happily placed my order for pick-up on the day before Thanksgiving. Pick-up was a breeze. I used the Yelp coupon (spend $15+ for a free pastry) and got a strawberry danish. The pies were a hit. The pumpkin pie tasted strongly of pumpkin and had great spice flavor. The custard pie was delicious even though the crust wasn't as good as Lee's. I really liked that it was less sweet than Lee's and made of two layers (one egg and one custard). They always run a gift card special around the holidays. Buy $100 in gift cards and get a $20 bonus card. I usually take advantage of this because we got to Brug's so often! read more

I have visited all three BRUG bakery and found this location in Manoa having the best selection! Due to covid, each pastry is wrapped individually in closed bins. Social distancing is being practiced, only 2 customers allowed in the store with masks being required. There was several bread selections, monkey bread which I have not seen in years, a variety of Mochi donuts that I personally didn't think that the frosting was too sweet for me after reading some Yelp reviews. I didn't even know that BRUG was in Manoa. I just happened to be in line at Fendu and turned and saw Brug. After loading up on the delicous items at Fendu, of course I had to go to Brug just to "see". Well I did see and bought! I hate to say it, but after just going to Fendu, Brug was exactly like what you would expect from a Japanese Bakery. Precision. Craftsmanship, quality control. Cleanliness. Look, I am not saying Fendu is not the above, but the presentation was just overwhelming after going to Fendu. Fortunately, the things I bought at Fendu are not available at Brugs. This location offers some unique items such as baked curry pan (bread filled with tasty Japanese curry), pork dumpling (bread filled with pulled pork), and anchovy Parmesan bread. Day old Cranberry Fromage Loaf and Chocolate Twist Loaf for 20% off? YES ma'am-sir! Not to mention the staple of Melon Pan. All in all a good carb-lover haul. This is a popular place, I'm surprised that it doesn't have more reviews. Great bread and pastries cooked daily. Available for mobile order pickup or I just normally drop in to grab a pastry on the go. BRUG has a small storefront on the ground floor of Manoa Shopping Center. Lots of parking available, location is a little out of the way being in a valley but worth the excursion if you're nearby. Lovely family neighborhood. read more
