My friend and I were walking past Brown Thomas this past week when we were in Dublin, and we couldn't resist stopping in. It's a gorgeous department store, with lovely (and expensive) clothes and purses and shoes and makeup...! Fancy department stores are rarer and rarer, and this department store felt fancy and pretty and shiny and wonderful. I'm lucky to have made it out without spending a small fortune. If you don't feel your pocketbook would be safe if you entered, just take in their wonderful window displays!

Brown Thomas is a department store that specializes primarily in the luxury brands like Chloe, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc. The inventory is actually not quite as large, as, obviously Harrod's in London. I had spent three days at Harrod's so Brown Thomas actually felt small in comparison. This store closes really early. 20:00 (8:00pm) everyday except Thursday. The boutiques don't have that much inventory. The men's department didn't even have a Salvatore Ferragamo to my amazement. The staff here are generally pretty nice though. We talked with some Chanel staff and some makeup women. The shoe department had some good brands, like Christian Louboutin, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, etc. But overall it still felt really small. Ireland literally has no other department store like this, and there isn't even a standalone Burberry store in Ireland. So if you're in Ireland and you absolutely need designer goods go to Brown Thomas but otherwise I would do my shopping in another European city.

Sensor on hat.

I bought a Palm Angels hat from the menswear section and Gavin did not remove the sensor from the hat. The alarm went off when I walked out and I asked the person at the front if I needed to go back for something and he no, you're ok. So I did not even think to look at the hat until it was too late and I had already left the country. As a result, I attempt to call the menswear section to figure out a solution to the problem and no one has answered the menswear phone. I was 'transferred' 3 times and after awhile, the call hung up. For the amount of money customers spend in your store, you would think you would be more cautious of sensors on clothing and your customer service in general. Now I have a 200 euro hat that I cannot wear with no solution in sight.

Brown Thomas, that beacon to Dublin's moneyed classes, is located on Dublin's Grafton St, and is surely the country's most famous department store. These days, I would only ever consider entering the shop if I had to buy vouchers for a present, as I find all the upper-class nobs who shop there abhorrent to my constitution, and even if I didn't, the only thing that I could realistically afford in there is coffee, and only just about at that. I must disclose at this point that there is a reason for my deep, underlying antipathy to the place. You see, for a very brief period of time - a couple of weeks one Christmas - I attended the department in a professional capacity. That's right, I was one of those perfume promotions people - squirt squirt. Day after day, I would stand at my allocated position in the shop, hassling passers by to try the vile smelling perfume that I was endeavouring to flog. People would ask me directions to areas of the shop that I was wholly ignorant of, and give me withering looks when I professed said ignorance. Hour after hour, girls in Ugg boots and tracksuit bottoms, or just in their Loreto uniform and deck-shoes, would traipse around the shop, twittering their vacuous chatter. And is there any class of individual more petty than retail middle-management? The wan that I worked for was a right bitch, a power-drunken harpy so she was. I have to say that the my brief stint working there was very instructive as to the upper-middle class mindset, with particular reference to the social phenomenon of conspicuous consumption. There was this one perfume we sold that was uber exclusive: Armani Privé, a private range of perfume sold only at a limited number of stores. The perfume was eye-wateringly expensive as a result: €200 for a 50 ml bottle. One of the lads estimated that it worked out at roughly €2 a spray, so he got testers of all the bottles in the range and gave himself a thorough dousing in them. "Mmm, smell me, I smell like seventy-eight euro!" (yeah, I guess there were some fun times there, too). But the thing about this fancy perfume was: it did not smell good. It didn't smell rank or anything - one smelled of black pepper and another smelled like church pews, and I can't remember what the others smelt like. But they definitely didn't smell like €2 per spray should smell like. Nevertheless, this stuff sold like hot-cakes. People were falling over themselves to pay €200 for this gammy perfume. This made me (a man who owns one bottle of aftershave from about 2003 that is never worn) seem like some sort of fragrance svengali, selling bottles left and right. There is definitely a market for selling the emperor's summer line of textiles to these people.

If I was a Rich Girl.. Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na... Yes, Gwen Stefani song comes to mind every time I step into this department sure... It's the Harrods /Selfridges/Bloomingdales/Nordstrom of Dublin! Oozing with high end designer brands, every corner just says Come to me... Take out your credit card and just buy me! This store often holds high profile make up/cosmetic events, with fashion shows also a fixture on their calendar. The department store has everything covered including a cafe, restaurant and a great homewares section which I love. The staff are always well presented and the customer service is second to none... The customer is at the heart of what they do! My favour sections, the handbags, the shoes and then my older more sensible side, says the homeware section. They have a loyalty card scheme but my god, can't even imagine the amount of euro's you'd need to drop in here to really get anything significant back. I've been buying cosmetic products here for wine and still only have €2.30 built up... But I'd say for those whom money is no object, like the lady who couldn't decide on her new miu miu bag so she bought both! The restaurant is a nice place to come to after a little crazy day on Grafton Street and a little treat, a nice glass of prosecco or champagne here can be enough to put the cherry on top of your day!

Brown Thomas has been Dublin's leading top-end department store since it changed owners in the 1970s. Known for selling designer name brands such as Gucci, Hermes and Louis Vuitton, it caters to a higher class clientele. It's also a popular destination for tourists because it's recognized as being Ireland's luxury retailer. Like other department stores, Brown Thomas is a lifestyle store with its cosmetics and accessories on the ground floor and its clothing, shoes and fine jewellery on the others floors. It even has specialist wedding consultants if you want to plan a lavish wedding.

A long time ago I used to work for Brown Thomas (as a student making some beer money). Not much has changed from then until now. Sure, the move departments around every few months but the same prices remain. I think their 20% loyalty day is proof that they are way overpriced. The way I see it, the wealthy continue to flock & spend plenty while the not so wealthy continue to spend their hard earned cash just so they can feel like they belong. They sell pretty much everything, from Armani Suits to Tiffany bracelets, they stock it all. If you can't get it in the store they are usually very good at ordering from one of the other stores in Cork or Galway. In fairness to Brown Thomas, they are everything that Grafton Street should be - I am sick of all the mobile phone retailers and fast food joints on the street - its our main shopping street! I do love browsing around & taking note of things I like, just so I can look for them cheaper online. Tip: Dress appropriately when entering the store, if you fail to do so you will be tailed while you explore the candi store of the rich ;0)

Brown Thomas, or Bt's as most locals call it, is a great department store. You're not likely to pick up a bargain unless it's sale time, but it stocks really good quality stuff - like the best in make up, clothes, handbags and shoes. They have some high street names like bertie and mac, or more upmarket brands like chanel and louis vuitton. I go here for make up and the odd time for maybe some clothes, but mostly I love a good browse.

Brown Thomas, or BTs, is traditionally known Dublin's plushest department store on Dublin's plushest street. It is the place where 'classy' celebrities launch their products and Dublin's elite purchase their threads. In pre-Celtic Tiger days, I imagine it was the only place in the country where certain international designer labels could be purchased (legally). It still clings to a sense of olde world 'politeness' by having elderly men in suits hold the door open for shoppers. As well as designer clothes, it also sells high-end cosmetics, make-up and perfume. It is posh and pricey but it has never pretended to be anything else.

Just a little off the beaten path along Seafort Avenue, this is the secret shop D4 dandies go to for the best of Fashion Weeks past, as previously worn by Social and Personal types. Step into the back for a look at filmier gowns and frocks, but steel thyself for the prices -there's no bargain basement prices (but you will get that Chanel blouse at half it's original sale price). My first introduction to Second Avenue was on a cold spring day a few years back; as we rounded a corner on a closed up shop I wondered if we'd gone too far. A moment later the shop front appeared, blocked in by rows of Land Rovers parked right in front of the shop window. Inside there was quiet as women fanned through beautiful silks and suits hung along the wall racks. At the centre table I fell in love with a black croc clutch that I would end up going back twice to mull over bringing home. The price tag ended the would-be romance.

On offer here you can find Gucci suits, Prada handbags, Alexander McQueen jackets and John Rocha scarves, all at a fraction of the original price (though unfortunately still out of my budget!). Admittedly, it takes a bit of rummaging to find something of real interest in Leia, but the selection of party dresses is alright. These are the kind of dresses you might wear for a fun night out with the girls, or possibly to a fancy-dress party; frivolous, colorful bits of synthetic materials that frequently have sequins and ruffles attached. Nothing high fashion on the least. But cheap as hell! Leia Clothing also sells really high, plasticky fake-leather heels. We're talking seriously, hooker-shoe high. I wouldn't recommend leaving the house wearing both a dress and a pair of shoes from Leia Clothing, because you will probably look pretty ridiculous.

I discovered this gem in 2005 and have found quite a few bargains that I still have. The garments fit well, wash well and are pretty funky! The shoes are good as well, I had a work BBQ to go to and had nothing to wear, so I popped along to Leia and got a dress and a pair of "plasticky fake hooker heels" (the exact same pair in River Island for a third of the price) and got complimented all night about my ensemble! The staff are so helpful, and not afraid to tell you what suits you and what would go nicely with that top/skirt/dress, as with the BBQ, I tried on a really unflattering dress, to which the senior sales girl (Stacy, Shes the best!!) told me that it made me look bigger then I am, (scarlet!!) and helped me choose something that was more me, and I felt great all night!! I highly recommend it if your in a jam, need something to wear quick and are looking for girly, fun outfits that you can wear again and again...till it goes out of fashion, the one downfall of the clothes is that they're very in the moment. All in all a very good place to shop!!

I'm seriously shocked this place hasn't been reviewed already! I went here this weekend with a…read morefriend who has started the epic task of finding her wedding dress. Dirty Fabulous has been mentioned a few times as a place to find good vintage clothing, particularly dresses. It's upstarts in one of the georgian buildings on Baggot street, so it's a bit off the beaten track, and I suspect you have to have an appointment - well for wedding dresses you certainly do. We were taken into a room with beautiful things that girls love, but what surprised me was the range of dresses was quite small. The nature of vintage being what it is means that you do have to be lucky to be in the room at the same time as the dress you want. However I found the staff great, they do realise the nature of the search and offer to keep your details and to let you know if anything that you would like does come in. And the dresses are beautiful. You can see these really beautiful different styles from various decades - 50s, 20s, 60s etc. There's also beautiful vintage jewelry and accessories. So if you're a vintage style lover this is definitely a place for you. I do have to say that the staff here really stood out. We had a few appointments that same day and no-one gave us advice anything like the lady in Dirty Fabulous. I think my friend was very tired of mediocre dresses at this point, and she picked her up by telling her not to mind any nonsense people tell her in shops about deadlines. She gave her great advice about trying things on even if they were in the wrong colour or shape to get a better idea of what works and what doesn't. She gave us cards of other shops which might stock dresses that she might also like. She organised us bridesmaids, who were flailing about uselessly, by designating a note-taker and talking about mailing lists. And all of it was done in a gentle, understanding way which made us all warm to her, and agree we would certainly recommend the place. She said to us as we were leaving "always remember to eat between every appointment and have a glass of wine with lunch".... after a footsore day with a disappointed bride-to-be the importance of this advice really stands out in my mind!

I had clearly stated when I booked that I was looking for wedding accessories and jewellery, but as soon as she established I already had my dress she seemed annoyed I was there. Alas, no, I was not always this cool. If you could only have seen me circa 2000/2001, when I used to go around in my Slipknot hoodie, no doubt listening to a Korn CD on my new-fangled discman. O, halcyon days. My relationship with thrash metal did not last terribly long (I just couldn't relate to all of the angst, for then as I now I was possessed of a sunny dispostion), but for the duration of that particular affectation, you could be sure to find me most Saturdays in Asha in Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. Asha is the only shop in Dublin dedicated exclusively to moper nonsense (and I'm not forgetting about St George's St arcade; that is for when the goths graduate to emo-dom). Asha is full of t-shirts, posters, stickers, badges, bracelets and teenagers going through their 'awkward' phase, essentially everything that you need to be cock-of-the-walk when you're hanging around outside the Central Bank, giving out about how awful your parents are because they won't let you get a Jim Morrison tattoo. Going into Asha was always an insructive experience, because apart from selling goth accessories, they also sell cannabis paraphernalia. And pot, beloved not only of mopers, is also enjoyed by scobes, so Asha is the only place in Dublin where these two disparate cultures are likely to interact on a regular basis. Go to Asha one day, sidle up to one of the stripy-jumper-sovereign ring-kids and tell him "I just heard that hippy over there slagging Bob Marley". Oh, what fun.
