I'm a fan of their frames and service, but not their price. Can you blame me? I'm just a college student. I'm writing this review reflecting on my experience there a year ago. While it may seem like ages ago, I still remember the kindness and friendliness Manny and Paddy gave me which is something I rarely see these days from businesses. Coming here, I knew that BVH would charge higher for their frames and services but I couldn't settle on the kind of frames Lens Crafter had. None of them really flattered my face. You know when you're looking for frames, it's already weird seeing yourself in a new pair and at the same time you feel lost at the overwhelming selection. There were a couple from Lenscrafters that were okay, but do I really need them to be from Tiffanys or Burberry? No. So I went a couple stores down to give BVH a try and see what frames they offered. Manny was very attentive and helpful. The fact that I had a particular style of frame I liked helped loads in making the choosing process easier. The annoying thing is all their frames are in a glass case so you can't access them yourself. Manny promptly chose 3-4 based on my preferences and I tried them on. The one thing that was outstanding about Manny was he critiqued how you looked with each frame-you don't have the generic, sugar coated "oh you look great." He commented how I have a wide facial structure and recommended that rectangular frames would better complement my face. I've never gained such insight before and I totally agree with him after trying a couple of rectangular and circular ones. Pretty amazing how after more than a decade of wearing glasses and going to countless lens stores from different countries, it took Manny to give such useful advice. Paddy, the optometrist, was a joy to work with. I never felt nervous around him as he had this aura of cheerfulness that made it comforting during the eye exam. We managed to talk about myopia and he asked about my studies in college and why I chose my major. Effortless conversation. At the end of the eye exam, he said he'd be more than willing to have me as an intern or shadow there if I ever wanted to in the future! Manny gave me a couple of free pens on my 2 visits there. He made it a point for me to take them. I still have them sitting in my cup of pens to this day :) When I came to pick up the glasses, he made sure it fitted right. It was slightly unbalanced so he used a special machine to heat and curve the rims so it hooked well in a balanced fashion to my ears. I've never had that done before even though this was not my first time wearing plastic frames. I think it's pretty amazing how these 2 can run a optical lens store by themselves when Lens Crafters has a big team, but falls short on customer service. While BVH does have a retro look to it, don't let it deter you because they're just as capable in running a business compared to corporate chains. The only real short fall is the price which is really not budget friendly. Came to around $400 with the eye exam. My school insurance is lame and doesn't cover lens wear. Had I had more 'dough', I would rank BVH 5 stars without hesitation. read more

The optometrist in house, which there is only one, refused to let me use the sink to wash my hands when I was taking my contacts out for the eye exam. He insisted, and I really mean forced at this point, that I use a drop of hand sanitizer to wash my hands (as apparently this is the most sanitary way of go about washing your hands). Naturally, my eyes stung as soon as residual alcohol from the hand sanitizer stung my eyes, and he merely laughed and said this was natural. Man was I appalled when he started yelling at me upon leaving, insisting that the additional checkup steps he went through (which I never asked for) was going to cost me additionally to the exam (which is pretty much always covered by PPO insurance). The woman who works the front is his wife, and her mundane reaction to her husband raging at a customer seemed all too familiar to her. Really felt bad for that poor woman. Just avoid this place at all costs, the guy has temper issues and is extremely aggressive making sure he pockets as much as he can from subtle additional charges to a basic eye exam. Avoid these guys at all costs!!! I called the store manager an "incompetant boob" to his face. I have never had a worse experience at a retail establishment in my 33 years. I went in here about a year ago to buy glasses. I knew what wanted when I went in, gave the clerk the model, color and prescription. I paid and was told it would take about two weeks. I was a little uncomforable b/c the manager was rude, didn't really seem to know what he was talking about and frequently berated his assistant, a friendly Ukrainian girl. I never heard from the store so I called to check in. I was told they had lost the order and could I possibly go into a LensCrafter and find out what the model number was again. Reluctantly I found one and supplied the information (I was in Chicago on business at the time). After a week I got a voicemail that he talked to the factory and they wouldn't sell him the frames without a "color number." Shocked I told him that there are only two colors blue and black, buy that the one that isnt blue!" He asked me to go back into LensCrafters and find out the color number. At this point I was fed up and went back to the store to ask for my money back. He actually refused. I had to call American Express and have them reverse the charges before he finally relented and gave me back my money. I am writing this now because I just bought a new pair of glasses in Boston at Envision in Boston (who was fantastic) and I learned that Brookline Vision House never told the Insurance Company that the order was cancelled so VSP said it was too early for me to buy another pair. I suspect he kept the money they reimbursed him at my expense. Once again avoid Brookline Vision House at all costs!!! read more

My insurance co was charged for things that didn't happen and I was charged full price for every part of the exam even though I already had my prescription and he only spent about 15 min with me. When I set up the appointment, the doctor led me to believe that he would work with me considering that I had a recent exam and prescription, and that he would work with me until we found a pair of contacts that fit me best (I have troublesome eyes). What he meant was charging me full price for having to do 1/4 of the work, which included charging me for every potential trial pair of contacts (unlike my previous doctor who only charged me when we found ones that worked). When I tried to call and express my concerns, the man on the phone argued with me and was aggressive in proving me wrong. No reasoning or willingness to negotiate. Besides, the shop is cramped and the "help" is unprofessional. I do not recommend. read more

Ouch. These guys told me my insurance was valid, then after the exam, a $130 charge ended up on my bill. Whoops! When I asked them to fix it, they sent me a copy of an exam contract saying they have the right to make all necessary charges and fees. I wish I had my lawyer with me before I signed such a legally - binding agreement... Now that I have had a $130 exam, I would think that I could at least get my contact lens prescription from them, so I could buy lenses from another place. Wow, how silly of me!! I can't get in touch with them, and I think they went out of business. So, I spent $130 dollars on crappy service, with absolutely NOTHING to show for it. Not even a valid prescription. Literally $130 out the window. If they went out of business, I can see why, but schadenfreude cannot refund my money. read more

Stay away from this place!!! I went there without checking the reviews, and I am sorry I did. I got my prescription and thought nothing about why Dr. Kalish gave me my contacts in a zip-lock instead of the boxes, and why he insisted to give me only half of the batch and to come in later for the rest. A few months later, I went in to get the rest of the lenses, but this time something feels fishy; I got the lenses in a zip-lock again, they were out of the original boxed and some were separate from the 3's they usually come in. When I looked closer, I noticed that the lenses were from different batches and had different expiration dates. I suspected that they are trying to sell me samples, so I asked Dr. Kalish for an explanation. He said that he keeps the boxes so in case I have an issue, he will know what batch the lenses are from and contact the company. I put him on the spot and told him that there is no way he would be able to know which lens created the problem since he gave me a pile of lenses from different batches. He immediately said: "I see your point" and told me that he can give me lenses from the same batch in a few days. I told him: "I think you are trying to sell me samples". His employee almost jumped me at this point, yelling at me that they do not sell samples. At this point I told Dr. Kalish that if they don't have closed boxes available in the store, I would just like to cancel my order. I canceled the order immediately. To the other person who commented before me (Diana L.): You also stated that they some of your prescription at a time and thought it was just a funny thing. Look closer, I bet you also got your lenses in a zip-lock bag. This is not funny. Oh, did I also mention that when I had my prescription done, I had to change my lenses after a week since he gave me a too strong prescription? This is also the reason I cannot use this prescription now in other places, because he never corrected the original prescription. read more

Avoid this store! The worst customer service experience I have ever had. The short story: they broke my new frames and then cut the new lenses to put them in a new frame I didn't choose or want. I came here because one of the arms of my glasses needed adjusting and since I had bought these glasses in a different country I could not go back to the original store to do this. I have had glasses for over 10 years and have done this many times at many different stores (in many different countries) and this has always been an easy and standard procedure. When I went in asking if they could help me with this, the lady at the front desk told me that since I had not bought the glasses at the store, if anything were to happen to them, the store was not responsible. Although I thought this was a little strange, I agreed thinking I had nothing to worry about since this was such a quick easy procedure. I regret that decision because I am not exaggerating when I say that it was barely 10 seconds of her handling my glasses and she broke them, literally I heard the plastic snap!!! She barely apologized and told me this is why they tell their clients that they are not responsible. Not only was I furious about the fact that they broke my glasses but all my interactions with them to fix this issue since have been appalling. After lots of complaining they told me they would do their best to find the same frames and that they would call me if they found them. After two weeks of not hearing anything, I stop by the store not only to find out that they weren't able to find the same frames (and didn't call me to inform me about this) but they put my lenses into a new frame that I never picked out or approved of! I just don't understand how it didn't occur to them that I might want a say in what frames that I wear on a daily basis for next few years? I admit that I waived responsibility and they warned me, but I also think it is completely reasonable for me to expect that a store that sells glasses would know how to do something as simple as adjusting one of the arms. I have been to many eye wear stores over the years and I have never dealt with such terrible customer service and complete lack of professionalism. Strangely enough, I had trouble finding a place that was not Lenscrafters where I could get glasses, contacts and eye exams all in one place in the Brookline area that accepted VSP insurance and was open on weekends/evenings. However, the Vision House did not disappoint. When I arrived for my first appt, they were busy and running behind schedule. They don't have much of a waiting area and it is small. However, Dr. Paddy Kalish was extremely nice and did a quick and through exam. He gently reminded me to take out my contacts a few hours before bedtime, don't put them in the am until I've been awake and let my eyes rest more (5 minutes between glasses and contacts and don't stare at that computer screen so much, uhh, so much for that!) After my exam, it was time to pick out frames. There is not a huge selection, but as someone who does not wear glasses often and who didn't want to spend all day trying to pick out frames, I did not mind this. Dr. Kalish personally helped me pick out frames that compliment my face and I now have snazzy pink/brown frames. My frames were ready for pickup in 2 business days. The older gentleman who works in the shop and adjust glasses was very nice and accommodating. I also had a follow up appt to check on my contacts - it turns out my prescription was a tad too high, so Dr. Kalish dropped the prescription a bit and now I can see oh, so clearly!They had the new prescription in stock so I was able to walk out with a year's supply of contacts that day. He also gave me some lens solution and new snazzy contact cases. He encouraged me to stop in anytime if I needed solution, cases or replacement contacts - as they always have these on hand. The prices a little bit higher than I was used to paying and I could probably have saved a bit if I shopped around, but I think I got a good deal with the service. read more

I have been a customer for 10+ years now. I'm not affiliated with the operation in any way. I do shop around and sometimes use other shops for some of my frame purchases, but when it comes to trusted advice about the health of my eyes, or anything having to do with my contact lenses, Dr. Kalish's professional sensibilities and strong customer focus have kept me coming back again and again. Twice he has bailed me out by helping to facilitate emergency supplies or prescriptions while I was traveling. One time, it was in helping to secure medication for a severe eye problem while I was in California. He has even arranged for hand delivery of samples when I was running low on lenses. I've moved up to the North Shore in the last 7 years, but continue to travel to Brookline because the service and care are worth it to me. I'm a visual designer, and the Lenscrafter model of banging things out doesn't work. If you're looking for a place that will pay attention to you, and put your needs first, give them a chance. read more

The sales clerk, who based on other reviews was likely Manny, was incredibly rude earlier this month. Unless he's involved with ownership, it's amazing he still has a job after this many complaints. I've done a lot of research into the purchase of eyeglasses, so let me lay out a couple things here: * The store is miserably over-priced. You attempt to take down a model number of glasses, you'll get the glasses snatched out of your hand. Literally. Two frames he was selling at $289 go for $110 online. I understand in-store mark-up, but nearly 300 percent is insulting to the consumer. So, too, is the thought that a customer should not be able to shop around for the best price. If there's a stereotypical example of how a small business should not attempt to adjust to the online world, this is it. And to reiterate: you do not EVER snatch something out of a customer's hand. Ever. * Next - the insistence on hi-res (thinner) lenses. Manny must make more money off of them, because while hi-res lenses are good for strong prescriptions (I've seen varying accounts of at what strength they become necessary), the widely accepted opinion heard everywhere else and from all the other opticians I talked to is that you do NOT need hi-res lenses in the -/+ 3 range --with the lone exception being if you had particularly thin frames where anything but thin lenses would look bulky. Yet Manny says he doesn't do anything but hi-res. Really, pal? What if the customer doesn't feel they need hi-res? It's an insistence of up-charging. * Last, the doctor. I never went to the one at Vision House. But I know this: LensCrafters, about 40 feet away, charges $75 for an eye exam. Vision House $125. Unless you have a history with either doctor, why would you ever pay $50 more? If you feel you've gotten a good deal at this store, you've done no research at all. There are several other optical stores in the Coolidge Corner area, including independently owned ones, if that's what you're beholden too. Take your business there. read more

the doctor is a nice enough guy -- kind of a funny man (though perhaps unintentionally) -- and i guess i was satisfied with the exam, etc. but the man insists on rationing my contact lenses. i have to come back every 4-6 weeks for 3 months, just so he can peer in my eyes and change my lenses, until he'll give me a 3-month supply. and then i have to come back 3 months later for him to give me the rest. listen, i didn't sign up to participate in a longitudinal study on my optical health. i've worn contacts for nearly 15 years. i know what i'm doing. just give me my lenses and let me go on my way. damn. read more

Boo.. I walked in here today, and though I can't say they had an awful selection, it sucked bc all the glasses are held in a case like you would see at a jewelery store... Any pair that interested me, I had to ask to try on, and the guy would put the previous pair I'd tried back in the case so that I couldn't compare several frames together. It felt like they were paranoid that I might steal them or something.. So stupid.. Also, no designer frames, which was what I was looking for. Finally, the place stunk of stale cigarettes, which was pretty gross. read more

If I could possibly give this no stars, I would. I registered for a Yelp account specifically to warn Bostonians about this experience. I think that all of the positive reviews may be in reference to someone who no longer owns the store, because my stay at Brookline Vision was my worst shopping experience ever. Completely unprofessional, the man who runs the store wasn't even there at 4 PM on a Tuesday. I call the store, and he begs me to come back and says he'll be back in 25 minutes and can I meet him then. After his pleading, I agree to meet him over there, only to have him try and pressure me into buying a frame that I didn't want. I refused, told him that I needed to contact my insurance company and I wanted to shop around, and he literally tore up my order form and ordered me out of his store in a slew of obscenities. Unbelievable. If I'm going to pay $400+ for a pair of glasses, I'm going to be damned sure that I like them and damned sure that I'm getting them at the best price. Any rational business person would understand this and work towards making that sale instead of completely alienating them. I urge any possible patron that unless you want to be verbally abused and irritated beyond belief, avoid Brookline Vision at all costs. read more

My husband and I have been customers for 10 years. We love Dr. Kalish. We have been buying glasses for years. My husband had an exam last month. He asked Hanna, the Office Manager/Assistant if they still had his insurance info on file and they said, "of course". They called a few months later and said his insurance didn't cover the exam and he owed $140.00. My husband asked them to resubmit. They did not. We had no other correspondence (not even a bill) and they sent it to a collection agency. I called today and Hanna told me that since he didn't get frames, (which he didn't feel he needed right now), they would not waive the Exam. I explained that we just want them to resubmit to the Vison Insurance and we sent a copy of his valid Insurance Vision Card to her. Hanna told me that they do not re-submit claims a 2nd time, however it turns out that they submitted to my Husband's Medical Insurance and not his Vision Insurance. At this point, I don't trust them to resubmit and I don't want my 840 credit score damaged, so we will pay their bill and submit to the Insurance Company on our own. Needless to say, neither I nor my Husband will be returning there. read more

A RIP OFF!!! - For progressive lenses in an old frame, I was charged $300. With my VSP insurance (which the employee said they were affiliated with), it should have cost me only $10. Too late now. - Furthermore, I found out at a different eye store (1 year later) that the new lenses were not aligned, which explains why I was never really able to get used to the new prescription. I complained about the lenses but to no avail. - Lastly the new lenses were unprofessionally cut, leaving space between the lens and the frame. As a consequence one of the lenses kept falling out. I went back to have it fixed, paid $25 and after a couple of days the lens fell out again. I am saying: "Don't trust this place!" Now, 1 year later I have ordered new lenses including a new frame at a different place with a co-pay of only $80. read more

I had an ok experience at this place, right up until I got my glasses back...and then it all fell apart. I went in to update the presecription in my existing frames; a simple fix that I've had done a number of time before elsewhere. When my glasses were brought back I didn't even recognize them - they were out of shape and round (Note: they were square frames when I dropped them off). Ok I said - this is the labs fault, they place that actually put them in the glasses. Let's try it again, Dr. Kalish andhis optician said they would send them back and get them fixed - no problem. Well, despite their best efforts they came back out of shape still and when I asked for anouther go around I was told they "would not help me anymore". So here I sit...out $136, a year's vision benefits and a pair of perfectly good frames. Some would say, well you can still wear them even if they aren't perfect...to that I point to my fiance's reaction when I put them on "yout aren't allowed to wear them in public." In all honesty, the thing that made the experince so bad was the confrontational attidude I got when I tried to work with them toward a fix. No customer service = no customers. read more

Run, don't walk, away from this place. I only wish I had read the reviews on Yelp before I walked in. They have been there for years, so I (mistakenly) thought they must have a good reputation. Dr. Kalish was fine for the exam but he ought to be more involved in the rest of the operation. I ordered new progressive lenses and frames and have received every conceivable excuse in the book as to why they took six weeks: frames had to be ordered from the factory, factory out of stock, optician not sure which model I had requested (after confirming photos and the model number), optician in the hospital and couldn't place the order (and apparently no one else could either); damaged pair came from the factory, needed to reorder, needed to refit me...blah, blah, blah. When my DKNY glasses were FINALLY ready, where was the DKNY case? Well it was not "included" and cost $35 extra. What??? They gave me a huge ugly generic case instead. We dickered over a discount for the poor service to date and they promised me I'd have the DKNY case right away. Not. Said it would be sent to me. Not. Said they would "deliver it to my house." Not. What is the deal with their customer service? I have been polite and civil, but I'm done with them. Except that I must comment on the personal hygeine of the optician, who appears quite unprofessionial. With his unkempt hair and ratty sweatshirt, he appears messy at best and unclean at worst. And I had more than enough of his smarmy manner. My glasses cost over $300 and although they are far from perfect, I'm not going back. I can't stand any more aggravation. Be warned. read more

Since I had my glasses in this vision house, my nightmare just started. The lens dropped several times within 4 month. One day, I put on my glasses. I felt very weird. Then I realized one lens is not on the frame. I had to look for the lens on my desk, then look for the screw. I got late for the work that day. Today I went to the Gym. After taking the shower, I grabbed my glass on the bench. Then one lens directly dropped on the floor. I picked up the lens, then searched for the screw on the floor. However I can't find it as it is too tiny. I had to walk to the near vision house I can find. I spent $ 5 to fix this, then go to work. It is really very very sad experience. read more

Don't go there! I went to get my contact lens prescription. They said they covered most of the insurance, but it turned out to cost me $130 for eye check,but another $130 because of contact lens. I'm surprised at all of the negative reviews, since my experience here was great. I hadn't had my eyes checked in almost five years (sad but true), and my glasses were on their last legs. I stopped here on a whim, and I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Kalish later that day. He was very nice and gave me a number of eye care tips along with a thorough explanation of why I needed to do these things. He was also very patient when it came to helping me pick out my frames. I have a difficult time finding frames that fit, but he was incredibly accommodating. I got my glasses just two days later, and Dr. Kalish asked me to make a 5 minute appointment so he could ensure that the glasses fit properly. As an added bonus, I got an excellent deal on my glasses. All in all, the stellar service and the incredibly reasonable prices made going to the eye doctor and picking out new glasses a pleasure (rather than a dreaded chore). read more

I was very impressed with how I was treated by the folks here.......until it came time to buy contacts. The doctor told me that he "didn't know how much the total would be" for a 12 month supply of contacts but was certain it wold be under the $400 allowance I receive via my vision insurance. When I pressured him to answer me, he said he couldn't, that he wouldn't know what the current "deal" was - but to relax, I had nothing to worry about. Needless to say, only a few months' supply came to well over $400. Dr. K tried to get me to pay the difference (several hundred dollars at this point) and I got angry and frustrated, telling him I could not afford such a large out of pocket expense. Finally, he agreed to cancel the order he had made and only sell me $400. I felt like I had walked in with a target on my back as a sucker, since I am a recent graduate and not very knowledgable about insurance matters. However, after reading the other reviews on this page, it seems like this is the way Dr. K treats all of his patients and customers. I won't be going back and I would advise others to do the same. read more

There are several reasons for me giving 1 star to this establishment, but the most important reason is for the incredibly rude serice I received. I was so appalled when I left this store that even though I have never been one to write reviews, I've created a Yelp account and am giving this place a review just to let others know how horrible it was. i was looking for new frames, told the man (i think his name was marty or manny or something like that) a few details for what kind of frame i wanted, and he started to show me some frames. i am a very picky person and frames are a big purchase, so I wanted to make sure I got ones I really liked. So with each frame that I didn't like, I told him no, tried to say what I didn't like about it but sometimes couldn't, and he would try a different one. I told him specifically that I wanted plastic frames because my skin is so hyper-allergetic and reacts to everything that it is better to steer clear of metal ones, yet he made me try on 2 metal pairs anyways insisting I would be fine. We only went through maybe 5-6 frames when he abruptly said "Your problem is you just don't like glasses! I've shown you a few perfectly nice frames and you rejected them all. I can't help you." Wow. I was your only customer at the time and you just yelled at me and accused me of not liking glasses rather than helping me find a pair that i would like. So I said "fine" and I left. My problems was his immediate defensiveness when I said i didn't like something -- I'm sorry, but this is a purchase that will be prominently displayed on my face -- I want to browse, I want to find something that actually flatters me, and I don't want to settle for anything less. I'd never been to a place before where if I didn't like a pair but couldn't tell exactly why I didn't like it, I would be yelled at and accused of just not liking the product because how else could it be that I didn't like theirs! I'd never been to a place like that UNTIL I walked into Vision House yesterday. So I said "fine," turned around and left, went to Studio Optics on Berkeley St between Newbury and Boylston St. instead, proceeded to find 3 frames I liked within 10 minutes, and made a purchase. Other reasons for the low rating -- store was dimly lit, every frame was in a glass case so you could not browse on your own and try on frames at your own leisure, and they change their store hours frequently and only post a sign on the door and not on their website -- i live nearby and have tried to go there several times only to arrive and find they've closed up early. I guess I should have taken that as my first sign that coming to this establishment would be a bad experience. I would only go back to show Marty/Manny the new frames I love and purchased right after I left his store to show that in fact, I do like glasses, I just don't like your rude service. read more

While the doctor was very nice, the retail side was extremely rude and uncooperative. I would definitely stay away from this place. They will cause you (and by they I specifically mean Manny) a great deal of issues with your insurance company. Unfortunately, I was not very satisfied with my visit here. My eye exam was fine, but I believe the prescription I was given was a bit too strong. I felt a little rushed during, and I prefer when doctors are forthcoming about everything they see and are thinking so I don't have to ask a million questions. That was not my experience here. I was also told I would need special contact lenses which is actually not the case. I also was told I would not be offered a pair of trial contacts with my fitting exam, which I thought was a little stingy considering I have never worn contacts. I recommend Boston Eye Group (three blocks east on Beacon) which offers reasonable prices and a test pair of contacts with an exam (helpful to first timers). read more

I brought my daughter to Dr. Kalish for examination and contact prescription. The experience was a breath of fresh air! Hannah at the front counter was so kind and friendly. Dr. Kalish was quite punctual and helpful. Contacts were ordered and came only a few days later. While I was waiting for my daughter's exam to end, I worked with Hannah to find some new frames for myself. She had incredibly good judgment when it came to helping me choose a frame that fit my face and was attractive. Again, my glasses came quickly. What an amazing experience, one stop shopping and positive experience. NB: I was so shocked to read so many negative reviews from other BVH shoppers. One thing I know, the employee (Manny) that so many people complained about is no longer working there. Also, people complained about price--in comparing to other opticians, I don't think there is much difference in price. Glasses are just plain expensive, wherever you go.
