Really frustrating experience. I made an appointment for eye exam to get new glasses and contacts. Glasses prescription was fine, though I got glasses elsewhere. The contact lenses were a nightmare! First contacts prescription was completely wrong. Could barely see with them. Went to an appointment to get them corrected but I accidentally forgot the lenses, asked if they could reset my appointment for any time later that day...NO. I had to wait 2.5 weeks to get seen again! At the next appointment, they "corrected" the prescription but it took them one month to have them available. Despite multiple inquiries about my contacts, emails and calls to their lens center, the contacts were sent to a different office, about 35 miles away! I asked if they could either transfer to my doctor's office or mail to me...NO! They insisted on a whole new order. Yet more waiting! They did expedite the order but the prescription is still off. I need to hold small print about a yard from my eyes to able to read it. There was no follow up on their part. Totally frustrated, I am going next week to a different doctor and company to get contact lenses that are supposed to be right for me! To add to the frustration and my negativity was that I was there three times a week asking for my lenses (only because my physical therapy was across the hall) and each and every time they asked my name (you'd think they'd remember after 10x, assure me that they would call me as soon as they would come in; when they eventually came in, nobody called. This is a smaller business but they excel over all major eye care companies. I had been going here for years and after covid, I hadn't been in a few years. I came back this year and they remembered who I was and welcomed me back with open arms. The Optometrist there is really good and all of the workers around him are friendly and supportive and work very efficiently. I have a "chain" Optometrist across the street from my office. As convenient as that may be, I prefer to give my business to local small business. My appointment on 3/5/22 did not disappoint. Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly and an intake was immediately done. Minutes later, Dr. Edelstein greeted me and very warmly, and without rushing, listened to me and offered his advice after examining me. The whole experience was 5 Star all the way. Why is a girl enshringed in designer threads hobbling around like a baby giraffe, bear-hugging complete strangers, and mistakenly slathering on conditioner as strangely sticky moisturizer? Blind as a bat and completely miserable. Why and how I lost and could not replace my contact lenses is another matter. I made an appointment with a google-d and seemingly reputable optometrist. Even in my pathetic blearly-eyed state, I thought I had walked into a Baltimore city, run-down, stuck-in-the-early-90s optmetrist's office. The plastic racks were yellowing and Adrienne Vittadini was laughably referred to as designer eye wear (I'm in my 20s, not 50s). Frivolities aside, the office workers were pleasant and helpful and Dr. Edelstein was very amiable and marvelously quirky. Being color blind, he painted some of the paneling in his office BRIGHT PINK, dare I say, MAGENTA. He uses some of the most advanced machines I've ever seen (and clearly I'm an expert on this matter) and he's very knowledgable about eye balls. Apparently, the president of my univ. is a patient along with many Brandeis students. However, I couldn't get over the feeling that he wanted me to order contact lenses and a new pair of glasses from his office. However, his prices are much higher than 1800CONTACTS so I could not be tempted. An eye exam is $135, which made me want to weep bloody tears out of my sightless eyes...(in Texas, it would be less than half that!). Compared to other eye doctors in the area, I'm assuming that's normal especially since a trial pair of contacts and every diagnostic test conceivable are thrown in. read more

Best optometrist I've been to in the (almost) twenty years I've worn contacts and glasses. The doctor was extremely educated and thorough, and the gentleman at the front desk was fabulous! He went through the details of my insurance and not only dealt with my irrationally based, obsessive hunt for new frames, but gave great feedback and suggested several pairs that were great picks. Bay State Eye is by far the best (eye)doctors office I've ever used. The practice is small but they are incredibly efficient and you're never waiting long. The front desk staff is always friendly and very, very helpful. They work with you to help you out as well when it comes to ordering, payments etc. They truly are there to help you. I even moved out of state and still kept them as my eye doctor, they're that good. I won't ever go to another eye doctor again, because no one compares to them. Recently I realized I needed prescribed reading glasses so I went to the couple of local eye glasses stores, including one at my Eye Doctor's in Dedham. I'm a big fan of Ray ban or some similar brand name. Unfortunately, all of the places I checked, gave me really high price. This is when my Dad suggested me to go to Bay State Eye Associates in Waltham. He's been going there for last 10 years and has never been disappointed. In fact, he speaks highly of his contact, John. As much as I trust my Dad, I'm a big Yelp review guy and I was impressed as over 90% of their customers gave the place "Five Stars". So I went there. Luckily John was working that day and he welcomed me with open arms. I'm in Hotel operations so I know what quality service is and I must say, I was truly impressed with John. He was friendly, polite and quite knowledgeable. He showed me several different brands and wide variety of Ray Ban eye glasses. He wanted me to try all of them and get the feel for the best one I liked. He ordered me the one I wanted for much better deal than any other place. After trying it for couple of weeks, I realized I wasn't comfortable with the lenses so I called John. (Of course it was my fault of not letting him know when I got them in first place.) John's response was 100% positive. He said, no problem at all. Please bring it back and I will fix it on a same day according to your liking. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a customer service! I ended up going to see Dr. Edelstein because he was affiliated with the vision plan we had at our office, and his office was close to where I work. The office seemed old and dingy so I was a little unhappy with the first impression. The girls working in the front were nice though, and soon I was called in to meet with Dr. Edelstein. I explained that i needed a new contact prescription because mine had run out. I let him know I had been using Acuvue daily contacts and liked them, but the central air in my office building was leaving my eyes so dry I couldn't make it through the day without removing them. I had heard they offered the Dailies in a moist version, and was hoping to try them. For some reason, he refused to prescribe the moist version of the Acuvue daily contacts I requested, insisting they were not going to be good for me. Instead I had to take two other kinds home with me, try them out and then come back in a week. I did not like either kind, so when I returned for my follow up visit, I requested the daily Acuvue Moist contacts again. He said he had other contacts I could try and then come back in another week for a follow up if I wanted. But he would not write the Acuvue prescription for me and had the nerve to suggest that maybe my eyes were too dry for contacts. Even though I had been wearing contacts for a few years, and just noticed an issue at my new office building. There was no way I was going to take another sample, and return again in a week. I'm pretty sure it was just a way to charge my insurance company for yet another office visit. I did not have the time, it seemed unnecessary and I didn't want contact brands pushed on me because the Doctor had some sort of deal with the company. I went somewhere else, got my Acuvue Moist Daily Contacts prescribed and have been very happy with them. If you were thinking of going here, I'd think twice. And I definitely would not reccomend Dr. Edelstein, that's for sure. read more

I love Dr. Edelstein! He's the only optometrist I have seen since moving to Massachusetts, and I don't plan on seeing anyone else. Ever! (As in, I hope he never retires!) Anyhow, my dad has glaucoma, and the doctor has always been very good at addressing the overall health of my eyes. He's also very confident in the materials he recommends for to vision impaired, like myself. I have a lot of light sensitivity at night, and after he advised trying the anti-reflective coating on my lenses, it seems like this issue has improved slightly. Also, my eyes tend to get really dry when I wear contacts, so he is really familiar with the materials lenses are made from and takes the time to explain why he thinks a specific kind would be better suited than another. I've seen a couple comments that the office/frames seem dated. I've always been able to find glasses I love, and I feel completely confident trusting the health of my eyes to Dr. E. read more

I've had glasses for four or five months now and I knew eventually I'd have a problem as a "newbie." Sure enough, the screw in one of my hinges came loose and the lens popped out. I don't have the tool to tighten the screw, so rather than travel a couple dozen miles back to my optometrist's office to address my needs, I looked for a place close by that might be able to help me out. I called Bay State down the street from me and they told me I could bring in my glasses and they'd see what they could do. I was greeted immediately as I came through the door, I told them I called earlier, and someone took my glasses for "a tune up." My glasses were returned to me structurally sound and the lenses were crystal clear, all of this free of charge. I was very appreciative, and I'm glad to know Bay State is in my neighborhood. read more

LOVE THIS LOCATION! Dr Edelstein has operated this business for years. I think I first came to him in the early 90's. His staff is very friendly and helpful. When they fitted me for contacts and I was having a lot of trouble, they honestly said, go for LASIK. Forget the contacts. I didn't heed their advice and tried contacts elsewhere years later. That didn't work either. Years later and $$$$ in the hole for contacts I can't use (and lots of aggravation trying to get them in or out), I got LASIK and am much happier for it. I am new to the area so this was my first visit to Bay State Eye Associates. I used yelp based on the general positive reviews to make my selection. As going to a new eye doctor or dentist you are weary if they might try to sell you stuff you don't need. This didn't happen at my visit. I am very pleased. It reminded me of a true good old fashioned eye exam and not just an office with fancy equipment. I found the staff to be pleasant as well. I passed my exam with flying colors as I was worried my vision might have changed. Dr. Edelstein told me I didn't need to come back for another two years unless I had any concerns with my eyes. He explained everything clearly and showed me the photos of my retinas, and presented all of the possibilities for me to choose the right glasses for my daily life and work. His assistant John is stellar, and was incredibly helpful in assisting me with choosing frames that suited all of my very particular preferences, and made sure they'd be comfortable. He even found a promotion that would save me money with my computer glasses. I have VSP insurance, and this office works closely with VSP, so I didn't have to fill out any extra forms or submit a claim. They took care of everything. read more

I went to see Dr Edelstein because he is near my house but I did not know I would enter the Twilight Zone. He told me my vision and glasses were fine, did a Diabetic exam of my eyes and then suggested that I should order new glasses because they were covered. I have never used these glasses and resent the fact that I was pressured into buying glasses just because they were covered, which in my opinion, made me a party to something very close to insurance fraud. Anyone want a pair of distance glasses? Nice frames......but not needed. read more

Pros: great optometrist, easy access, good availability. Cons: limited glasses frames and slightly old building. I went to this optometrist for the first time. There was easy parking on the side street. The front desk staffs were polite but not exactly warm. The store look a bit old, but clean, and had limited glasses frames priced between 90-250$. I was there for a eye check-up (contact lenses exam was 60$ extra). The optometrist was very professional and friendly. He made me feel very comfortable and trustworthy. He explained every step before each procedure. He was not pushy and did all the necessary tests to ensure good eye health. I definately recommand this place. read more

I went to Bay State Eye recently for the first time because my contact lenses I got last year at Lenscrafters were never really completely comfortable. . Several people I knew from school told me they went there for contacts and said it was a good place. I got there a few minutes early for my appointment so I spent some time looking at eyeglass frames while waiting to be called in for my exam. The place has really nice frames and I actually liked several that I tried on. The Doctor was very nice and I ended up getting Acuvue Oasys contacts which were much more comfortable than what I had before. This place had great service. The Doctor was very thorough and the result was perfect. I bought my contacts from them and I am really happy. This place is really reliable from what I can see. There was no pressure to spend extra money on anything and I agree with the people that recommended them that this place is very good. read more

Honestly thought this was one of the best places ever. I have been going here for I would say 4 years and never had a problem until recently when I had to cancel an appointment last minute. I get a notice a week later saying they have terminated their services from me because I cancelled my appointment last minute.
