The derby party at inner groove was more than enough to entice me. And it was the right decision. Games were set up all around the brewery, the kids loved it. Bartender was kind, fast, and attentive. Bathrooms were clean. Patrons were patient with the kids playing games. No food here, so BYOF or order locally off of the menus. We walked next door for carribean which was delicious. A good variety of beers were on tap. The sole hiccup is street parking only, but when we went on a Saturday afternoon there was plenty.

The bartender was quick to pour the drinks and friendly with each patron. The building itself is brick and the inside has exposed brick and a homey feel. They have at least 2 gender neutral bathrooms that were clean and easily accessible. Parking is available on the side of the building in a small lot or on the street out front.

The burger was excellent (I had the Polamalu) and the beer very good (Lotus Papyrus hazy IPA). The location is fairly hidden, but a great space, especially on a sunny afternoon. I hope they do well here, despite the low visibility of the location, because I'd like to be able to come back frequently. Two minor nits: 1) They follow the fad of lining up bar stools at 45 degree angles, which just always annoys me, and usually requires moving 3 stools to sit in one. 2) More importantly, as this is Pittsburgh and their burgers come with a generous portion of (good) fries, I hope they start just providing customers with a bottle of Heinz, and get rid of the comically small, thumbnail cups of ketchup.

Yeah, that's the vibe I was getting at Velum. There was a lot to like and a lot to not like about this place, so I'll start with the bad and end on a positive note. First off, it's in an old brewery and it looks like a warehouse. I'm not sure if they still brew their own beers but it straight up looks like an old warehouse. I've seen abandoned warehouses that look less like a warehouse than Velum. Maybe some people like that vibe but I felt like the cops were going to bust in and shut the party down like a teen coming-of-age movie. The taproom is all the way in the back, and so are the bathrooms, so if you break the magic circle, prepare to get your steps in. There's no kitchen. They DO partner with a food truck but they're getting their own review. I paid $10 for an average cocktail and $8 for a 12 oz cider that frankly wasn't that great. Either better drinks or bigger drinks, please. And everything is community seating. I don't hate the idea but I didn't care for the vibe so when I found a smaller table my friend and I grabbed it and boarded it. With that being said, there was a lot to like too. First off, we were there for a pinball night, and they have a great selection of pinball tables there, both classic and modern. I really would have liked information on joining a pinball league, but that wasn't offered anywhere that I could find. Plus on that particular night it was $10 for all-you-can-play, so we definitely got our money's worth there. The staff that I did interact with were super nice. That goes a long way and saved this from being a worse review. And the place is dog friendly, which is always a huge plus for me. All in all, I had a decent night. But the question as always is if I'll go back. Unfortunately, probably not of my own accord. If there's another pinball event, I'll definitely go, but it's not going into my rotation of cool spots. Not every place is meant for me, and that's fine.

Food is available for purchase from a variety of local restaurants as well. The beer, cocktail and food menu does change. Reservations with a deposit are required. You can choose from seating along the river level or highline level. Deposits are applied toward your order. This is an absolutely wonderful concept that is well needed not just in this time of a pandemic. The crew involved really has it down and it's an organized process. Sitting outside at a safe and social distance enjoying local food and drink just doesn't get any better. I especially love that they've included De Fer (one of my fave places) for those who may not want a beer or cocktail.
