Murphy's a great, old-school, no-fuss dive bar with a dying neighborhood vibe, which the next generation will not know that they are missing until it's too late. It's super friendly, but in representation by the staff and the locals that crowd around the bar, and as it's a cash establishment, it's more than affordable. It's a real dive bar, so the beer and drink selection will not be too extensive, but if you're looking for 60 different kinds on a rotating tap, you're in the wrong place. After reading a majority of the prior reviews of this place, I feel like I should get out the soapbox again, because some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. Especially the one that never stepped foot inside. I mean how do you write a review of a place you NEVER experienced. And all the complaining about the smoke...get used to it. What did you do years ago when people were allowed to smoke wherever they went? Yes, I know it's a nuisance. Yes, I am a smoker myself, but I have enough common sense to be a polite smoker (this is my personal choice, and it is your personal choice not to smoke, as it is a business' choice to allow or not allow smoking in its establishment). Anyway, let's move forward. I was skeptical of this place long before ever reading reviews, and long before I discovered Yelp. The outside of the bar looks old, which may have been a factor in deterring me for so long. It looks like it would be a one room tiny bar, but looks are deceiving, it is actually a big space. The front is a typical barroom. The bar takes up a good part of the room. But there is a fair amount of space for people to walk about freely when going to the door. Behind the bar is a small seating area where there are bar stools. In the back of the place they appear to have just about everything you would expect a bar to have. Pool table, multiple dart boards, and I even believe a shuffleboard table. I cannot speak of how it is in the back as I only glanced on my way to the bathroom. The bathroom I had used however, was rather small. Just enough room for you to do your business and turn around to wash your hands. The staff here on the particular night I attended were polite, funny and nice to chat with. They were knowledgeable about the brews on tap and every beer they had in stock. The drinks, by the way, were truly amazing. Just the right mixture of everything when they made up your drink of choice. And just to make sure you were enjoying the drink, the bartender came back around and asked if it was to your liking. The bartender even made sure it wasn't too strong and offered to add to the drink to balance it better. As for the limited food they had to offer, I cannot really talk about. The food I did see that patrons ordered looked palatable, so on my next visit I might give it a try. The alcohol was cheap but you have to pay cash, and they do not allow you to keep a tab. Not horrible, but kinda annoying. Police presence heavy around 2am at both gas stations (cop block.) I don't endorse drunk driving nor a police state. Facility: What you see is what you get, don't like it... fine leave. The bartenders are all aces. Friendly to the point of a second family. Deb and Dan are some of the most patient and kind people I have ever met. They have 3 pool tables (one has shallow pockets... that one is for the amateurs) at $5 an hour, 2 dart boards at $.50 a game as well as shuffle board. Prepare to part with your id as collateral for everything coming back in one piece and in case you break something. TV's everywhere and not all are locked so ask to put a game on beside your group. Clientele: This place, again, has a family feel. Legend has it Grandpa (Murphy) opened the bar and has been passed down. It is an Old Irish Pub and nobody cares your background as long as you are respectful and tip. It's cash only so hit the ATM before coming. Always bring more than you think you will need, you are guaranteed to make some new friends and end up buying blackjack shots if you get smoked on the pool table. Music: This place could be in a magazine for one of Pittsburgh's greatest melting pots. You have old heads who have been coming here for years, hipsters that try to sneak in a vape here and there (no longer is smoking allowed), movers/shakers and the occasional one-and-done. The diversity of the colorful jukebox waves is a testament to tolerance of every person that comes through the door. I have been caught climbing a chair every now and then to Shazam a song (be careful they spin.) Food: Murphys is tolerant of bringing in food from the outside. Clean up after urself and tip heavy for convenience. El Burro, Thai Palace, Square Cafe, Ease, Dees Dogs are on the block. Nobody will bat an eye for eating outside food at the bar, but ask before bringing other food in as a courtesy. Note that they do offer bar popcorn, homemade sandwiches, chips, gum, jerky and nachos. All at unbeatable prices! Drink: Ask about specials. Yeungling mugs are cheap. Pitchers are cheap. Craft Beer selection is limited. About 10 drafts (to my recollection) and about 15 bottle selection all pretty standard import/domestic. Basic liquor selection all wells available. I have been on them for a long time about getting a good scotch, but they keep only Dewars White Label and J&B if you know to ask. Good cheap whiskey such as Old Grandad, Old Crow, Evan Williams, Beam and Jack. In conclusion: Cheap beer, liquor and shots reasonable price. Diverse crowd/music. Good hearted staff. I just moved to Pittsburgh, and found Murphy's Tap room my first week here. I wandered in on a Wednesday, when they have poker games from 7 until late. The bartender was quick with the drinks and also very friendly, even when things got a bit busier. The bar is big, but most people seemed to congregate up front, as an earlier review mentioned. There are a lot of smokers, but I didn't find it overwhelming. The crowd seemed to be mostly regulars and people there for poker, but everyone was super friendly. I saw that they offered some bar munchies (nachos, popcorn, etc) but I didn't try any so I can't comment. The only downside I can see is that the bar is cash only, but they have an ATM on site if you are like me and only brought a card. I liked this place overall - it's a quiet, slightly dingy neighborhood bar that is great for relaxing after work. read more

For what it is, this place does the job. Cheap, powerful drinks without any distractions such as...dinner. There is a list of available wines posted outside the front door, but why on earth would you come here for wine? It's a beers-and-booze place all the way. At 8pm on a Friday night, the front room was perhaps a quarter full. The bartender was friendly and the service was snappy, but I can't picture this being a regular destination. The air is thick with cigarette smoke, and the decor grim and dingy, with more light coming from the TV than from the overheads. I guess what I'm saying is, it's exactly what I picture an OTB from the early 80s to have been like. Verdict: if you want a quick drink (and I mean "drink," not "cocktail"), it's a bargain. There's a reason why there are only two reviews currently for this place. Maybe it's that spending thirty minutes in the main bar area will make you spontaneously asphyxiate. They seriously need to invest in an air purifier. The bar itself is a huge space, though very few will ever make it into the back room. It's essentially a dead zone. There's a fancy back bar that remains closed so that two bartenders can roost on top of each other like Master/Blaster in Beyond Thunderdome and watch TV. This kind of forces patrons to hover near the front. So, uh, invest in a second TV, a nice coat of paint, maybe some dimmer light bulbs. You know, gussy yourself up a bit Murphy's. It will make you feel more confident. Who doesn't want a new coat of paint? Huh? HUH? I won't tell you how many years I've been going to Murphy's Tap Room, it would reveal my age. What I can tell you is that for as long as I have been stopping into Murphy's, it has been the same. The same bartenders, the same stools, the same wrapped up sandwiches and the same pool tables. There's something familiar about Murphy's tap room; something comforting. For some reason, Murphy's Tap Room is like a vortex; it draws you in even if you hadn't planned on going. The patrons that go to Murphy's are real salt of the earth people- they're electricians, bartenders, (from other restaurants, this is a good sign) and brick layers. You may also find yourself sitting next to a lawyer or doctor. My point is, there are all types of people inside this particular Irish bar, and they're all friendly. The drink prices at Murphy's are very reasonable, probably among the lowest in town. The tap beer is always fresh, and Jay, Karen, or Deb will make you the best Long Island Iced tea you've ever had. During the week you'll find the regulars sitting at the bar discussing sports, their jobs, the weather.... On the weekends, Murphy's becomes a haven for a younger crowd eager to party and have some fun. If there is one time during the year you have to be at the Murphy's Tap Room in Regent Square, it's St. Patrick's Day. You'll be lucky to squeeze your way towards the bar and order a Guinness; there are that many people! Regardless of the huge crowds during this particular holiday, it's well worth standing in line to eventually get inside, and hear the live bag-pipers and see the Irish dancers. This place was a pleasant surprise and lives up to most of the reviews on here. We went here for some Sunday Funday this past weekend and we have no complaints. While the bar area was a bit busy, we quickly got our drinks and retreated to the back of the building where the darts and pool tables are. Getting drinks all night wasn't a problem and we didn't have to wait long at all. All of the patrons there we talked to were very nice and everyone just seemed to be in a good mood. I have been in this bar many times with a friend of mine (who has been a patron for decades) and I thought the owners were really nice people but now I wonder. My friend is now confined to a wheelchair and still likes to frequent this bar, however, there are a couple of steps that lead into the back rooms where there are pool tables, dart boards, etc. She cannot get to this area and has a ramp that she would give to the owners so she can access this area. They refuse to put in the ramp. I thought all public businesses had to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act as long as it does not create an undue hardship. Great bar in Regent Square for a change-of-pace. If smoke bothers you, you have the free will to not go in. Pay as you go with cash is one of the smartest things they do. There is an ATM on site. Some bars have you run a tab and then rip you off at the end of the night. Not here. If you leave your change on the bar, the bartenders will not take it.
