Found this little spot for lunch on a road trip. I think this was some of the BEST fried chicken I've ever eaten. Great fries, too. The staff of one person was nice, too. I went with low expectations as it is located in a very sketchy area in the hood. Looks like a time capsule and owner told me his mother started over 65 years ago. Surprisingly some the best fried chicken I have ever had. They deep fry and pressure cook it at the same time. $14 for three pieces of chicken with fries and a roll. I kept hearing about this place so I had to come check them out. I heard the chicken was spectacular. As I entered the establishment I was greeted by an older lady and she greeted me with a smile. She then told me she was the owner and her husband used to run the business. I ordered a three piece chicken which came with a leg, thigh, and a breast which came to twelve dollars. Every order is made to order so be prepared to wait twenty five to thirty minutes. The Fried Chicken was delicious. You could tell that when you bite into the chicken that it was marinated in a brine which gave it amazing flavor. The chicken was seasoned well, fried just right, and very juicy. That lady put her whole foot into cooking this chicken. I can see why her establishment has lasted this long. She serves simple but delicious food. Broasterant, like most Hartford area restaurants with overall 4.5 Star ratings, made it on to my Try List. I'm rarely in that area so it took me a while to get there. But I finally did. The atmosphere is not a selling point, but wasn't a turnoff for me either. The inside looks like it was last updated around 1974. There is counter and table seating, but I didn't see anybody eat there in my 25 minutes inside. I gather they're mostly a takeout and delivery service restaurant at this point. Also, parking worked out for me in the lunch timeframe, but I suspect parking can be an issue at peak times. I parked about a city block away. After looking at the very limited menu, which includes Broasted chicken, seafood and fries, I decided on the $12 chicken plate, which had a broasted breast, thigh and drumstick, a bunch of fries and a roll. I would recommend ordering in advance. Things are made when you order. From the time I ordered, it took 25 minutes. What is broasted chicken? Essentially, it's chicken fried in a pressure cooker. I could hear sizzling the whole time I was there. LOL. The chicken was presented to me as a box, in a paper bag. When I opened the box, I saw a ton of fast food chain sized fries, which obscured the three pieces of golden brown chicken. The fries were about average for this style of fry. The roll was decent, but not a draw. The chicken looked fairly standard, but it was way above average taste-wise. The seasoning was not complex. I suspect it was mostly just salt and pepper. But the chicken was well-seasoned. Definitely better tasting than I expected from the appearance. The inner and outer texture were good too. Fried chicken and fries are not things that travel particularly well. So I'd recommend eating it somewhere soon after you pick it up. I imagine Broasterant is popular with people who work in Hartford and I can definitely see ordering chicken and bringing it back to work. Four Stars read more

I was talking about food with my co-worker. He was telling me that this restaurant has the best fried chicken in Hartford. ordered the chicken plate that comes with one thigh, two legs, fries, and a deliciously soft roll. You don't walk into this place expecting to get your food in 5. 2 seconds. I could not wait to bite into this chicken. it was piping hot because the chicken is prepared in a steamed pressure cooker. I can not believe I have never been to this restaurant. This chicken is banging, crispy and juicy. I loved that it wasn't oily. This restaurant has been in business since 1957. Not super sure what all of the hype is for this fried chicken spot. I was honestly a bit sketched out by the interior, definitely would not be a pleasant experience eating inside. The chicken was fresh, took a long time to prepare so I would definitely call ahead. The batter was unique, I think crispier than your avg chicken. I stopped by here two Monday nights ago by myself for dinner. I had been looking for a quick takeout place somewhat near my hotel whenever I found Broasterant on Yelp with its 4 1/2 stars on 40 reviews. Broasted chicken? Sure why not and so I headed over. It wasn't in the best neighborhood but I was just getting it to go and so I wasn't terribly concerned. The inside of the place sort of reminded me of a diner. It had a couple of booths done in fire engine red as well as a lunch counter with 6 seats. There was a tv on the lunch counter and a fish tank against the back wall. Finally the walls were decorated with pictures of what I assume was classic Hartford (a lot were black and white) since I could at least recognize the colt dome. For dinner on this evening I decided to go with the 8 piece chicken and that was it. So I ordered it and sat down to wait until it was ready. About 25 minutes later it was ready, I paid and got out of there and headed back to my hotel. Whenever I was finally able to try the chicken it was still quite warm. Its breading on the outside was surprisingly light and airy while having a great crispiness to it. Meanwhile the chicken on the inside was cooked perfectly and was still moist and juicy. Since 8 pieces is a lot of chicken, I wasn't able to finish all of it and wish that I could have ordered less. However I get why you can't since its cooked fresh and has to go through that whole broasting process. The bottom line for me is that I would stop back here again in the future. The first time I had Broasterant was about a month ago for lunch thanks to my coworkers that introduced me to this not fried but taste just like fried chicken, chicken! Since then I have order 2 more times and all three experience were good. All three times I have ordered take out and the first time I entered I noticed the outdated decor and diner-like seating. Is a small restaurant in Park street ones of the gems of park street that are still around. Parking can be a hassle unless you're a master at parallel parking. Wasn't impressed by the lady that was doing the cooking and taking the order she was a bit on the grumpy side. But the chicken gets the 5 stars. Their portion are big and prices are very reasonable. I usually order the chicken plate for $9.69 and it brings 4 piece of chicken and handful of fries and a buttered roll. Enough to share it with someone if you're like me and get full easily. Honestly, I wish that I could give MORE than just 5 stars for this location. If ever you want to truly feel WELCOME at an establishment, Broasterant is the place to go. The Owner is an older Greek Woman who has a pure soul flooded with love for EVERYONE that walks into her establishment and I personally have never seen that type of attention given in quite awhile to random people. The spot was not packed but what I did notice while waiting for my Chicken Dinner Plate (that consisted of 3 Pieces of chicken, fries and a roll) is that the phone kept ringing and often for pick up orders. So as these people arrived, it started to feel more like a family cookout as to how they were taken care of. She brought my food to the table with hot sauce and placed it before me. Now I am in full review mode for YouTube (www.youtube.com/daymdrops) and I took a bite of the fry....Lightly salted but crispy shoestring fries. Flavorful and effective! That is what I love in a delicious french fry but I am here for the CHICKEN!!! I grabbed the breast from under the golden fries and it was HOT! I work around the corner from here and visited for the first time this week. The food is DELICIOUS. Your choices are basically either fried chicken or fried seafood. I had chicken and French fries and YUM. The people working were very friendly too and clearly had a lot of repeat customers. Many people call ahead and place and order, then come by and pick up their food. I didn't know that going in, so I walked in and ordered lunch and it took forevvvvver. As she served me my food, the proprietor said "You can call ahead next time; that's what most people do." Good advice, and I will do so next time! read more

Stopped in after work today to get some chicken to bring home to the family for dinner. I went for the 16 piece, and did not try the fries or onion rings, which sound pretty standard. As described, the decor is vintage, and it's lovely. I really enjoyed sitting at the counter on the red vinyl stool waiting for my food to be ready. Service was efficient, not warm per se, but the no-nonsense vibe was appropriate. I did call in advance, as the chicken takes quite some time to cook, so be prepared for that. One thing I learned while I was there is that you might be able to get modified orders because a customer came in and asked for just wings. I may try that next time. The chicken was still hot and very fresh when I brought it home after a 20 minute plus drive. The family overall loved it. The meat falls off the bone, is super juicy, and the crust is absolutely perfect. It does not have a ton of spice to it, but it is well salted and flavorful. I absolutely will go back! read more

Chicken is fresh, cooked to order, and exploding with flavor sans all the grease. And when I say 'cooked to order' I really mean that the owner goes into the back, cuts up a whole chicken and starts gettin' her broast on. Thanks to Uber eats I didn't have to venture to the store. So I called to see if I could get all wings( they accommodated me). I'm nostalgic the last time I had broasted wings I was in college and in Ohio. (Does anyone remember pinkies) anyway I was hoping for the same mouth watering experience. Mind you I usually enjoyed the formentioned wings with a slight hang over or before the hang over. Still I hoped.....well all hopes aside this was not what I tasted in my memory banks. A greek woman who has been working the counter for 50 years, does everything the way they did on the day this place opened back in the 50's and hasn't changed a thing. Why should every restaurant operate this way? Because when you order chicken here, she goes into the back, cuts a whole chicken into pieces, applies seasoning, breading and cooks each piece to order. When you can see it, you know your food is fresh. The chicken was delightfully tasty, crispy, moist, everything a good piece of fried chicken should be. Wait a minute.... i said fried, but they're not fried, they're broasted. A process that involves very little oil and actually cooks the chicken from the inside-out. I'm a fried chicken fanatic. It is probably my favorite food in the world, which does not help my waistline. While visiting home, I had to venture out here to try the famous Broasterant chicken. You know it is good when they have literally 5 things on the menu- all fried too. My boyfriend and I shared the 8 piece fried chicken and a side of onion rings. The fried chicken was very light and airy and was the most grease-less fried chicken I've ever had. I don't know how much healthier this fried chicken is for you but it sure does make you feel like you're eating diet fried chicken if there was ever such a thing. Out of town for VDay weekend and saw Daym Drops do a review on this place. I love chicken and the way his chicken looked I said we can't go wrong. Honest review here....from Daym's review I assumed the chicken was made upon arrival. I wasn't expecting to see chicken pieces already made heated under the light. Mind you as soon as we pulled up my husband said this looks like it's going to be dry. I said well Daym's didn't look dry at all. Now back to the heated lamp light chicken. We ordered the chicken plate (3 PCs of chicken, fries & roll) and the guy dropped the fries. While we're waiting I'm looking at the chicken and the skin is looking dry and not crunchy and crispy. When Daym got his chicken his had to have been freshly cooked!!! Because our chicken was no where tasty as he described. The guy packed our bag, they don't ask you what PCs you would like to have. Anyway we get back to our destination which is 5 mins away, open our box and it's loaded with fries to where you can't see the chicken lol. We had 2 packs of ketchup, and no hot sauce. Now I'm repeating what hubby said about this looks like a dry meal. Parts of the chicken was juicy but other parts were hard due to us having lamp heated chicken. Holy broasted chicken! This place is old school and has been doing it this way since 1968. I've not seen chicken prepared this way since I used to go with my father as a kid to the old Maryland Fried Chicken in New Britain. Absolutely loved the 70's chic style decor for the red colored booths where you sit. But now on to the food because that's what matters. The menu is not complicated and everything is hand prepared and cooked to order, so be patient. Fresh is the word here, Chicken, fries, buttered rolls, onion rings, fried clams and fried scallops. That's about it. The broasting of the chicken leaves it perfectly crisp on the outside and very juicy inside. No grease and that is the difference between frying and broasting. If you've never tried chicken this way, please do so and do it here. I came in as part of a walking food tour with fellow Yelpers and was a bit full, so I only tried the chicken. That's all I needed. 1.) Reason for coming here: This was my first time having broasted chicken. After reading the talk thread on Yelp I was convinced that Broasted Chicken was for me. 2.) Background/Introduction: I never knew the difference. But when it comes to chicken, there are two types, who I believe are from the same family: there's fried chicken and then there's............dunt dunt dunt duuuuuuuuuh..........BROASTED CHICKEN (said in a heavy male commercial voice over voice). Anthony's laymen way of talking about Broasted Chicken:Broasted chicken gets put into a fryolator type vat filled with oil, then gets closed and locked into a door that pressure cooks the chicken. During this process, the chicken gets both broiled and roasted (but it's more like pressurized frying). It looks like a fried chicken, but tastes way better! Kinda funny, but I got the image of the old Ghostbusters movies where they put the ghosts in a large ecto-containment after catching them in a trap. Sorry, i'm going to have that imagine in my head for a long time. What a beautiful day it was to stumble upon this place. I was making my way to a couple places on Broad and Park Street to sample food and investigate. Then I saw this place. I was so happy, jumping for joy to know that there actually exists a Broastering place in Hartford/West Hartford area. Yes! *makes hand into a finger faced up fist, thrusts it outward then inward* 3.) Area - outside and inside aesthetics: Lemme tell you Yelpers, I must warn those who aren't use to inner city areas predominantly filled with a certain level of melanin, but, you might find this area a little intimidating. So for those who would have that kind of response, I recommend you going during the day. If not, grab some courage (whether liquid or mental) and head on over during any time in their available hours. Parking is on street, so on a nice afternoon day, you may find yourself walking to get to this place. It's right up the street from Pelican's Tattoo. There were about 4 patrons in there that day, a couple ordered take out and two others dining in. Next to the marquee there was a television which aired a soccer game. I read the first review of here, and contrary to what was stated I actually thought the woman and patrons were all Brazilian (sorry, i'm very attracted to knowing about cultures). 4.) The Food: No menu to take with you, just one too look at, which is posted on a traditionally lighted marquee (hey i'm trying to spread the word!). Just like I've read on the Yelp talk thread, and seen on Man vs. Food, Broasted Chicken is the way it is....................crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I was in love, and practically felt I was cheating on my girlfriend. The fries were cooked wonderfully for me. I don't know how they usually do it, but I like my fries well done - not black but light brown and very crispy. And they say Broasted chicken is healthier for you!?!? 5.) OMG! This chicken is SO GOOD! The coating is light and crisp, almost dry and perfectly golden all around. The chicken inside was perfectly cooked and still dripping with moisture. No heavy spices. No thick batter to make tiny pieces seem more substantial (Do you hear me KFC?). No heavy, bloated, "What did I just do?" feeling in your stomach afterwards. Found this place on Yelp during a drive from NYC to Boston with my family. We had a sleeping baby and didn't want to get out of the car so we were looking for something we could eat while driving without a huge mess. Stopped in on Sunday afternoon and the place was empty. We placed our order for eight pieces of chicken and watched the guy go in the back, grab the chicken, toss it in the seasoned flour and drop it into the fryer / Broaster.
