I'm a definite fan of Indy-based Broad Ripple Chip Co., a locally owned and family owned business serving up a healthier chip and rapidly becoming popular here in Central Indiana and beyond. The chips come in "Original Flavor" or "Sweet & Spicy." They're made from Russet Potatoes - this gives the chips a richer coloring and flavor. They are lightly seasoned and made in small batches with canola oil. They have no preservatives, no trans fats, no MSG, and are gluten-free. You can find the chips at quite a few retailers in Central Indiana including Fresh Thyme, Safeway, Target, 3 Meijer locations, several Kroger locations, and a variety of other shops. Additionally, they are served in Books & Brews locations, Porter Books and Bread, Cafe Patachou, Upland Brewery, and other spots. Alton Brown from the Food Network has proclaimed the chips to be "Incredible!" I'm probably more a fan of the Original Flavor, though I'm known to get both kinds depending on the mood. They even offer shipping. The company notes that their chips have a 10-week shelf life. For about $3-4 a bag retail, you get amazing chips made locally and by a local company. I was just casually strolling through Kroger, minding my own business, and there sits Broad Ripple Chip Co bags, waiting to be picked up. I was surprised to see it at Kroger, so they must be everywhere around town. I picked up a bag instead of my usual Sun Chips and man oh man it was worth it! Great quality chips with perfect seasoning and just the right amount of crisp. Perfection. If only the bags were bigger... My only question is I couldn't find a "flavor" listed on the bag so I don't know if I just got their original / if there are more flavors but my bag was anything but plain! Yum. These might be the best chips I've ever tasted. They use russet potatoes, which typically aren't used for potato chips. The finished product is magic. The owner also runs the Great Harvest Bread Company in town. He consulted with experts at Boise State University on how to make the best potato chip. These locally crafted and handmade chips are so fresh, crunchy, and oh so tasty. It just doesn't get any better than that. They use real potatoes. Yes, real potatoes with canola oil and seasoning. That simple! My only minor complaints is that every once in awhile I get a batch that is on the salty side. You. Yes, YOU! If you've never tried these chips, you must. Hop in the car and drive to local gems Wildwood Market or Rail Epicurean first, but if you must they can also be found at Kroger or Fresh Thyme for $2.99 a bag. Whenever you find a bag of Broad Ripple Chips around the Circle City, you must purchase. They're gold in a treasure chest. I've had a few of their flavors, and the original and the spicy flavor (can't remember the specific type) are my favorites. They have the perfect crisp, the perfect amount of flavoring, and the perfect amount of chips for what you pay for (for getting something locally made). Not your typical mass-produced chip!!! These chips are big, crispy, sturdy (always important for dipping purposes), and satisfying. I was lucky enough to see the owner speak at Yelps 10-minute talks earlier this week and I really enjoyed hearing his story. He went from practicing criminal law to starting up the Great Harvest Bread Company here in Indy. More recently, he became interested in making potato chips. After lots of trial and error, he came up with the perfect recipe! He uses donut fryers, rather than the typical deep fryer. The beautiful brown color of the chip is the result of carmelization from the remaining sugars left in the potatoes. I was also fortunate enough to sample the sweet potato chips. I'm obsessed with anything sweet potato so these are right up my alley. This type of chip is a little more difficult to make given the type of potato. I am typically not a chip person but I absolutely love these! Lets hope more and more stores around Indy stock their shelves with Broad Ripple Chip Co chips! read more
