Put your fears aside and do this! I did! I am pretty much afraid of heights and falling but I did this! And it was awesome! Kick your vacation up a notch. My husband and I reserved our time slot online after researching fun things to do while we were in town. I mean, where else can you walk across one of the tallest bridges ever? We arrived for our morning slot and were assigned to a small group of ten of us who were going to walk across the bridge together. Our guide was amazing, instantly vibed with him cause honestly, if it wasn't for that, I might not have felt as at ease. We took a short bus ride over to where we were accessing the bridge and he prepped us really well for the walk. We got clipped in and we were on our way. In his words, "walking and talking". We stopped several times along the way for him to give us some info about the bridge, etc. it was nice to take those moments to rest just a bit, snap some pictures, etc. At the halfway point, we took a 5 min break and several people, the hubby included, sat down and let their feet dangle. Not this girl. lol I was fine standing. It took us right over an hour to do the walk. The whole experience was outstanding and I would totally do it again. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be either. Being clipped in gave me such a piece of mind that I was able to relax and enjoy the trek. Once in a lifetime opportunity, definitely do it! read more

Incredible experience viewing New River Gorge from the catwalk beneath its famous bridge! We participated during the COVID pandemic (April 2021), so our group was kept small (there was just one other gentleman in our group besides BF and me!) and masks were required. Upon our arrival, we were fitted with harnesses around our waists that attached to an overhead cable on the bridge. We were then driven a short distance to a short but somewhat steep trail that led down to the bridge. The catwalk has railings that came to waist height, and we were fastened into an overhead cable, so I felt safe the entire walk across the bridge (although the other gentleman hadn't pulled his harness tight enough and it slid down during the walk --- he may have other thoughts. Pull the straps tight!!). Honestly, the scariest part was trying to take pictures with an unsecured phone. I highly recommend bringing a cell phone strap if you want to take pictures! The bridge does shake a little as the cars pass above, so it took a few steps to get used to it, but you're quickly distracted by the views of the river and gorge below. We walked relatively slowly to allow us to take in the views, and halfway across the bridge we were encouraged to sit down and really focus on the gorgeous views. Our guide was friendly and mostly knowledgable about the bridge, but there were a few seemingly obvious questions she couldn't answer (like the length of the bridge) and she told us a few personal stories that seemed a bit out of place. Regardless, we had a good experience and did learn about the bridge, its upkeep, and the annual Bridge Day hosted in Fayetteville in the fall. If you're in the area, definitely recommend this experience! read more

This bridge walk was so cool! The staff was friendly and efficient. It is a short bus ride to start the walk and also to get back at the end. Our guide Kalila was knowledgeable and energetic! She provided many details and answered questions throughout the walk. The walk is very easy. The only surprise is the vibration on the catwalk and handrails from the traffic crossing the bridge above but you get used to it! Amazing views! Well worth it! read more

Finally got to do the bridge walk and overcome my fear of heights. The best $72 spent on this awesome outdoor adventure. The tour lasted about 2 hours, and started at the bridge walk center near the visitor center. After checking in, and getting set up in the harnesses, a shuttle took participants to the visitor center. Then guide led the group on trek to the bridge. At first, I was bit scared, but the Xanax helped alleviate the nerves. Also, once hooked in, the shame of having to unclip and take the walk of shame wasn't really a good option, so I went on. At the catwalk platform, maybe about 2 feet wide, movement was felt and this is normal. I was told that during high winds, the platform can move as much as 5 feet! Good thing it wasn't windy when I went. There are a couple of overheard catwalks, where some guides who are certified will climb up to take pics of the group from off the main catwalk. Unfortunately, I went with a guide who wasn't certified to do so. The guide was still kind enough to take some photos from the regular catwalk, and then AirDrop them to me afterwards. I am not just afraid of heights, I'm petrified. I called and talked with the staff beforehand and the lady who I talked with was wonderful and encouraging. The entire staff, including the check-in, bus driver and guide were friendly and professional. The COVID-19 precautions required masks and a small group. We kept them on, with the exception of a brief photo. It was super cold outside, so the masks kept our faces comfortable. There were only 5-people plus the guide. You are tied off with a harness the entire time to a cable system. You walk along a 24-inch wide catwalk with guardrails. Although I had a white-knuckle grip as I walked along, the others in my group were comfortable walking along without touching them. You get a great view of the New River below. Our guide, Jay, did an amazing job! He put me in front and encouraged me the entire time. Jay stopped us periodically to give us insights into the construction, history, and bridge day explanations. You walk very slowly and start to acclimate. I even started looking around. He answered all of our many questions and kept the experience enjoyable. He even took a few pictures for us. read more

The tour offered a great overview of the history of the bridge, the mechanics of the bridge itself, and information about the activities that take place there during Bridge Day. If you're not afraid of heights, you won't have a problem-- you're strapped in and able to walk confidently. However, even if you are afraid of heights, the guides do a good job of talking you through it and trying to keep your mind occupied elsewhere. It was a great mixture of walking and enjoying the scenery and moments of her sharing facts and information - perfect amount of each! It's $75 per person but how many chances do you get in life to walk on the catwalk of a bridge over 800 feet in the air? TOTALLY WORTH THE PRICE! It felt incredibly safe and was not scary at all - my 8 year old daughter loved it! 8 years old is the youngest who can go on the tour and must be 48 inches tall but I felt it was extremely kid friendly! Lots of moments to pause, take pictures/video, hear stories and the history of the bridge/area, feel the rumble and rattling rails from all the vehicles passing on the roadway overhead (lots of safety, but a lot of "thrill"!) and even an optional moment to sit in the mid-point of the bridge arch, with feet hanging off the side! The Bride Walk was such a unique and exhilarating experience. Such a fun way to view the beautiful New River Gorge national park. Pros: Unique experience: Walking on this giant steal bridge was a very unique experience. The bridge is one of the highest vehicular bridges in the world (the third highest in the United States) and really the highest bridge in the world that offers this type of experience. On the bridge walk, you (in a group) walk underneath the road, on the iron "catwalk", all the way from one side of the bridge to the other. I think that this makes a really unique experience with your partner-- there were all couples in the group I went across the bridge with-- but would also be a great solo activity or activity for a group of friends-- just make sure you book the experience for the same time slot and you should be good to go! Engaging Tour guides: The tour guide who took us across the catwalk was extremely friendly, knowledgable, an upbeat. He checked in with the group to make sure that we were doing alright with the heights, and going at a good speed. He engaged us with lots of facts about the bridge, and asked us fun trivia questions about the bridge. He was extremely knowledgable, and helped us with our safety equipment, and answered every random question about the bridge that was thrown his way. Mid-way on the bridge, in the middle of the gorge, he also made sure to pause and collect phones so that he could take pictures of everyone in the group. Safety first: I felt very safe while walking across the bridge. The tour guide helps to strap you in, and the catwalk has a tall railing the whole way through. The catwalk is also wide enough that you don't need good balance or any level of real athleticism to make it across. Beautiful views: The views on the bridge are absolutely stunning, and you definitely have enough time Good exercise: Crossing the bridge took around 45 minutes-- I felt that we went at a good pace, we kept moving along but definitely didn't rush anything. The group walks the 3,030 foot length of the Bridge and then are shuttled back to the Bridge Walk-- it is nice to have that shuttling option to and from the bridge as well! Year round convenience: The bridge walk is available every day of the year except Christmas and Thanksgiving, which makes it really convenient for any trips you are planning to take. Easy sign up process: I booked my trip online through the Bridge Walk's website. You pay right on the website, and then when you arrive at the address, you step-in, give your name, complete safety waver, and are good to go-- very easy! Not too crowded: There were a total of 6 folks in my group crossing the bridge. The tour guide mentioned that this was a smaller-sized group than usual. The day that we crossed the bridge was late November, and it was pretty cold, so I get the sense that in never weather, or maybe in late summer or early fall Other: While I felt very safe the entire time I was on the bridge, I will say that this experience might be a bit too much for a person that is afraid of heights. Value-- For two folks, I spent about $160, and felt that this was a very valuable and unique experience for that price point. I would definitely recommend to all! Cons: No cons at all! This is a must do activity in Fayetteville. We were just in town for the weekend and a friend recommended we check this out. Our guide was great. He loved the area and have a great overview of the bridge. He was happy to answer all of my dad's questions. The first few steps walking onto the catwalk under the bridge were a little scary, but then I got used to it. You're strapped into a cable, so you definitely aren't going to fall. The views of the river and gorge from under the bridge are incredible. When you get to the middle of the bridge, they let you sit down and enjoy the view for a bit. I thought it would be scary, but it was really cool. You walk across the entire bridge and then a shuttle brings you back. At 2-3 hours, the tour did feel like it could have been a little shorter. This was the perfect activity to do while it was raining because the bridge acts as a large umbrella! They do tours in almost all weather. I highly recommend doing one of these tours while in the area. We booked ours online the day before, but they said you can show up the day of if there's availability as well. read more

Do it! I am the type to have a panic attack on the county fairy ferris wheel. I've done zip-line obstacle courses where I can't bring myself to do certain drops, etc. because of my fear of heights. At no point during this was I ever antsy or anxious, it was the thrill of a lifetime while feeling completely secure! It is the coolest experience to drive over the bridge, see it while hiking, and then get to hook into the structure of it and walk it yourself! The guides are friendly and fun, and it's a great way to learn about the bridge too. Something about looking down and out into the gorge hundreds of feet below you makes the information sink in differently than just reading a display plaque haha The bus drivers are also a hoot. You'll know what I mean when you go ;) There is a gift shop were you can get the usual type of souvenirs, but also things like phone holsters so you can take some of your own pictures on the walk. Super reasonably priced especially because they could easily charge more when you are a captive audience. Unless you do many things that require everything on you to be strapped on or left behind, I'm sure these items are not something everyone has haha They will also hold your car keys for you, which I appreciated. Special shout-out to Debbie also. She took pictures of us for us on the bridge so we could have a personal memento :) [In addition to being a great guide haha] I was interested in coming to New River Gorge National Park and had been thinking about it for a bit, but as soon as I came across Bridge Walk I knew I had to go. It may sound funny to have planned a whole trip around Bridge Walk specifically but it was more than worth it! You cannot beat the views and the experience itself is hard to capture in words.
