West Virginia Adventures White Water Rafting Company was a great choice. Overall this was my second white water trip my first being in Pennsylvania probably about 7 years ago How did I hear about them?+++ I hail from Michigan and I picked them through a groupon promotion. Above and beyond customer service+++ When I called them to leave a voicemail with questions about the groupon promotion at 10:00pm...they actually picked up the phone (thanks Francesca) ...which left us surprised and totally unprepared but it was good because we were instead able to catch the "day after labor day sale?" lol we were able do the Gauley Marathon package for a steal. Also they worked with us when we said we weren't sure if one guy in our group would be able to come by holding the deal for him after we bought the rest our groups packages. One hiccup/ misinfomation from both sides+++ When we got there, our reservation was changed from a upper gauley marathon to just a lower gauley on a Friday. This was done because we didn't have the required 4 to attempt to run the upper gauley we only had three because the guy that was supposed to come didn't end up coming. we weren't made aware of the numbers requirements but it could have been due to having the numbers and then later..no longer having the numbers. Luckily they just let us do the trip the next day with the other groups doing the marathon. Accommodations:+++ Free camping(included with the tour); bathrooms were non vault toilet, yes shower, i think there was also a cabin there but i don't know the details. Pump water available (tastes great-no iron smell or taste) The Gauley Marathon Tour!+++ The Upper Gauley is an amazing rapid in fairly quick succession of drops and rapids. The lower gauley was cool too. intense to semi-intense Rapids but more broken up with some fun water features along the way like jumpers rock. You also get the middle gauley with the marathon package which has an olympic rapid that was pretty fun OWEN! was our guide (highly recommended for the upper and you are able to request specific guides if you wish when you make your reservation). Very experienced (10 years of rafting experience). Our group seemed very responsive (luckily)and his directions were clear. And no one technically fell out in our boat. We had one close call where I ended up hanging out of the boat by one leg and got white washed a minute on one of the lamest rapids named "the ledge". But Owen took control of the boat and had the other rafters yank me back into the boat. (legs never left the boat=never fell out) I'm not on the gauley swim team yet :P. Although there were areas on the lower gauley where he let whoever jump out and swim/ride some wavy rapid areas for fun Other Notes: -Lunch is provided- cold cuts,cheese fruit, potato salad, ppj, chips, toritilla chips, cookies, oreos vanilla and chocolate (I ate too much) -Beer and water provided on the way home :P -Next time I think id definitely do a double upper Gauley because it was crazy good -But I think for the first time I would always recommend both. - I might take my fiance on the lower day 1 and upper day 2 -We didn't tip properly due to inexperience which we regret heavily and didn't know until we got home. But well be sure to make up for it next time and hopefully this review will do some good in the meantime (name drop Owen..Owen Owen Owen) lol -Have some extra layers or long sleeves for the lower gauley it can get cold in shady areas the last half of the day in September i got by in a long sleeve breathable but I kinda wish i went with a 2-3 mil thick wetsuit. I have so much to saw about our experience with West Virginia Adventures from the superb hospitality checking in, to our school bus ride with Mr.NASCAR, to our actual raft ride with Croc, to our outfit stepping up and helping ACE whitewater rafting crew who made a horrible turn and endangered their guest lives because of using inexperienced guides. Croc was such an amazing guide from his personal life stories, to stories about West Virgina, to rocking 80's music while hitting the rapids our experience with him was top notch! Would definitely recommend request Croc! West Virginia Adventures is a small outfitter who only employs experienced guides, and which definitely was apparent as our guides had to pull our rafts to the side to perform a rescue on ZZ rapid when ACE's inexperienced guide went right of the Thumb endangering the guests lives. Our guides hopped out of our rafts and climbed a large rock mound essentially rock climbing (croc was obviously barefoot during the rescue) using ropes and anchoring into the rock they were able to save the guests stranded in the rocks in the middle of the rapids. Skip the big outfitters and stay safe and on edge with West Virginia Adventures! Can't wait to come back again! read more

The staff was super friendly, made us feel welcome when we arrived and were a blast to hang out with. I felt safe the entire time, even though we booked a late trip and we pretty much had the river to ourselves. An extra guide came along in a kayak and I was happy with the measures they took to ensure that we were safe. In spite of the water being super low, (even the upper New River was pretty leisurely,) the guides made it a fun trip for me and my friends. He knew a lot about the history of the area, entertained us with conversation, and just enjoyed the breathtaking scenery with us. The guides were skilled and kept us from getting stuck between rocks or bottoming out (except for one time and it could have been way more, the water was extremely low.) Enjoyed swimming under the bridge and riding the rapids. Tons of fun. Thanks guys! read more

West Virginia Adventures provided our family of four with an unforgettable experience! We opted for the beginners tour down the Upper New River Gorge, and it was absolutely perfect. Our guide, George, was nothing short of fantastic--knowledgeable, friendly, personable, and incredibly informative. We were pleasantly surprised by how minimal the rowing was, allowing us to fully enjoy the stunning scenery and amazing weather. Our two daughters, aged 10 and 13, had an absolute blast! The entire journey was smooth and well-coordinated, making it easy to relax and soak in the beauty around us. The company itself is fantastic, and we're so glad we chose West Virginia Adventures for our trip. So...if you ever decide to experience white water rafting, which I did with my whole family July 26th, you gotta go with West Virginia Adventures! If you want to go white-water rafting, this is the place to go! There was never a dull moment with our guide Jack. He joked around and told us different things about the rapids! He even "walked the dog" and surfed some awesome spots! We had an amazing lunch on the riverbank and a fun jump off of Jump Rock. Jack went over safety each time and made sure we knew what to do for the different rapids. He also pointed out some cool rocks and the nicknames for them. My son (age 14) and I went down the New River with West Virginia Adventures. I have never experienced a more relaxed atmosphere on a whitewater rafting trip. The owner of the company led the trip and he makes sure everyone is having a great time including the employees. There is no stress and yet everything gets done in an efficient manner. We went with Crock as a guide. It was just the two of us (my best friend and I) with him on the boat. We took on some class 5 rapids and we all managed to stay in the boat. All of the guides seemed experienced, calm, and competent - very important things when you're trusting strangers with your life. Awesome time. We chose to go early in the season (late March) and still had a great time even with the cold water. Banjo, our rafting guide, was excellent! He was full of knowledge to share down the river between rapids as he has been doing this for many years now. It was our first time. Great time on the upper New River with 3 adults, 3 kids (ages 11, 12 and 13) for the gentle family float. Our guides, Will and Francesca, were fun, entertaining and informative. Had an awesome first whitewater rafting experience here! The guides were all very nice and knowledgeable. Lunch was provided and very good... even had beer ready after the trip was over. They are the only mom and pop rafting place around there and they are great! Highly recommend!! read more
