We rented a houseboat from 5/14-17, there were 4 of us. I have a lot of experience with VRBO type…read morerentals. The houseboat was in good working order, had all the amenities dishes, toaster, TV, Vcr, 2 staterooms with double bed, two additional berths with double beds and the couch pulls out to a double bed. The boat was pretty simple to operate. Cell Service we had service in two of closest coves to the marina , AT&T no Verizon. We didn't have any complainants .. other then poor weather. You just have to have reasonable expectations. This is glorified camping on the water. We had a great time three generations of boys getting together to do a little fishing while we ate good, played some cards, watched a couple of movies, explored the lake. Cons: The lake is allegedly dry, but it seems to be one of those don't ask don't tell type things. Tips: Bring some work gloves when you are tying the boat to shore there are a few sticker bushes etc, bring a small hatchet same issue to use when tying the boat off. I would also have a pair of jeans for the same purpose. next year we will probably bring a small dingy to pull behind to do a little fishing from.

This area is known for the lake and for boating and outdoor recreation, so I understand that coming during a colder time probably put a slight damper on everything that should be taken with a grain of salt if you're reading this review. When we arrived there was no one in the office. It felt closed off and unattended. I wasn't able to go up into the lighthouse at all, which was super disappointing because for me it was the main draw. From the outside, the lighthouse was lovely to look at but I was really really hoping to be able to climb to the top. The rest of the grounds looked fine and this is definitely a place designed for overnight stays. I would definitely return but during the right season and when I am able to explore the lighthouse!

The location is only 20-25 minutes from the New River Gorge area which makes visiting the bridge or downtown Fayetteville a breeze. The gift shop has a large selection of items just in case you forgot something or need a souvenir. There is a large community firepit and pavilion with Adirondack chairs. Each full hookup site also has it's own firepit with chairs. The property is well maintained. Make sure you take a walk to the hammock area...this was the kids favorite part! We already booked a trip back for next year and cannot wait to spend more time in WV.

Some people eat snakes and bugs. I eat snickers and bananas. But there was one thing I always wanted to try - white water rafting - just like my girl Meryl Streep in "The River Wild" (sans Kevin Bacon trying to kill me). I took a chance and decided that the rafting trip was for me when I had the option during college orientation. I stepped aboard a large raft with about 7 other freshmen newbies and our guide. The guide was very outdoorsy and informative when it came to teaching us how to navigate the rapids safely while also giving us a nature tour of the area. "See that? That's the New River Gorge Bridge. People commit suicide there all the time." *click goes the camera* Making our way down the river was beautiful yet horrifying. I felt like a bipolar woman going through "the change." One second I'd be enjoying the sights and sounds of nature and by the next I would be screaming bloody murder and accusing the guide of trying to kill me. Not.Dramatic.At.All. Along the voyage you're allowed to jump out of the raft and take a dip in the river - not me though, I don't do wet. As the trip continues you face down a variety of rapids and try your best to stay afloat. And of course stay aboard the raft. Not my friend Angie though, she went right overboard. I could have tried to save her, but I wasn't letting go of my paddle nor the safety of my flotation device. Hey... at least she had a life preserver ;( By the end of the day I had one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I was thrilled my college gave me the chance to do this. The rapids are fun, the guides are awesome, the lunch back at the campsite is good, and there are even photos to buy as they have photographers snapping shots at some of the rapids. I'd share my photo with you but this trip was during the days when the doctor said I "had a bit of a weight problem." And nobody wants to see Keiko the Killer Whale wearing a life vest while holding a paddle, right? *20 minutes after posting this review, Mexican Yelper Nadya R sent me a link to photobucket of an image she mobile uploaded from my bedroom without my knowledge...CREEP...enjoy!* http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/misschapis/IMG00624.jpg

When we arrived, the lake did *not* disappoint -- calm water, gorgeous scenery, and just a relaxed, welcoming energy. We didn't even try to explore the whole place (it's huge). We stopped at the first dock we saw, hopped out with our gear, and got straight to fishing. Mealworms on the hook, lines in the water, and good vibes all around. We saw fish swimming past and had a few nibbles, but no actual catches this time. Still, the whole experience was a win. It wasn't crowded at all -- just a few groups scattered around, everyone spaced out enough that it still felt peaceful. No loud music, no chaos, just people enjoying nature. **Pro Tips:** * Bring your own bait, drinks, and plenty of snacks (trust me, you'll get hungry). * There's a port-o-potty nearby *or*, you know\... nature works in a pinch (ask the boys ). * Sunscreen is a must and a hat, perhaps. We're already planning a return trip -- maybe with kayaks or to check out another part of the lake. If you're looking for a quiet, scenic spot to fish, chill, or just unwind without a crowd, Plum Orchard is a solid pick.
