The New River

The only people giving this place bad reviews are the ones who don't know how to have fun! If you're a fun hearted person, this is a must stop. It has a great view of the gorge, as well.

An absolute tourist trap? YES! But worth it? Also, yes! Don't bother bringing anything in (ie phones, bags, purses) just leave them in your car or in one of the lockers they priced. Trust me, you don't want anything that is loose. For less than $10 per person, it's worth the "trap". They do a fine job of building up suspense and creating humor. It's not high quality, but for 15 mins and $10-its worth it to just be able to say you've done it. Make sure you double check their opening days/time. My only issue with the entire attraction was the abundance of confederate flag paraphernalia, including actual flags themselves. In 2022, this is just unacceptable and the items should be removed immediately.

A DUMP

WARNING!! DONT DO IT!! The only mystery is how they remain open. This place is a complete scam & every advertisement is completely false. They don't allow photography because it would ruin their business by showing the truth that this is a complete sham & a dump!! This is nothing more than a home made poorly made back yard fun house put together with discarded garbage. There's a poorly painted 3d funhouse without 3d glasses .. one fun house mirror..3 creepy ass women mannequins ..LOTS of trash and old taxidermy animals. This is the majority of the "hole" and most has absolutely nothing to do with anything and finally you enter the "mystery room" It's just a room with hanging balls, log & a extremely extremely nasty duck-tapped two seater couch they try to make u sit on.. the room is very small and just built to make you feel off center nothing special.. Full tour for 2 was $20 and lasted roughly 5-10 minutes. The staff/owners have signs everywhere that are extremely rude, off putting and unwelcoming. I gave benefit thinking someone did something stupid to cause such signage to be necessary but NO the rules are to protect their roadside scam. Me and my spouse were extremely pissed about this ripoff and now we're on our way to our hotel to scrub our skin off with Lysol and hand sanitizer!!

No phones or cameras inside but plenty of things outside.

My husband and I just visited Memorial Day during our sightseeing in Hawks Nest. This place is a fun nostalgic throw back. We enjoyed it and had a fun time watching the kids reaction to the mystery.

This is the view from the parking lot.

Very unique! You won't regret! Not what you would expect way out there! A lot of bang for your buck!

Great fun. Not many road side attractions left, this one definitely has the "it" factor.

We went on a food tour of downtown Roanoke. Our guide was Ned. I thought the whole tour was run…read morevery well (I've been on about 5 other food tours) and saw that Ned was in contact with the next restaurant each time so that they were ready for us. Ned provided us with great information about the history of the town, the railroad (although some of that was incorrect as he kept saying Raleigh instead of Norfolk as it pertained to the railroad and it kept saying that one of the railway companies "left" when in fact, they were merged. Maybe this wouldn't have mattered so much except someone in our group was very familiar with the railroad) But Ned was very personable and you could tell he loved history and as we do too we really enjoyed his tour. The food on the tour was fairly varied and unique to the town (a must!) and it was great to hear the back story of the ownership of the restaurants. (I was a little worried when at the first two restaurants we were served seafood dishes, a seafood bisque and shrimp and grits as one person in our group doesn't really like seafood and I think this is a risky choice for a tour. Also at Chocolate Paper we were given two mediocre Asher chocolates to try instead of some of their more expensive and more delicious Debrands chocolates.) One person in our group thought there wasn't enough food and thought another restaurant or two should be added. I tend to agree when compared to the cost of this tour against other tours I've taken. Had the cost been a little lower I think the amount of food would've been fine. All in all, a great tour though. Ned really was a great guide, I hope he leads more tours, I really learned a lot!

Think about the cheesiest tour you have ever been on - this was the exact opposite. I'm going to look for food tours in every city we visit from now on simply based on this experience.

A leaf often ends up on the boardwalk and if you step on it, it does smell a little skunky. Don't forget it's not far to the Hills Creek Falls and beautiful Summit Lake and campground. They did a good job putting up information and learned so much about what it was like to work here for the railroads way back when. It's incredible how times change, things become more efficient, jobs are reduced, and eventually eliminated. I spent a total of an hour and 15 minutes here for reference. There is a gift shop where I got my usual souvenir magnet, but there are other neat things here as well! I was tempted to buy the "dining on the railway" book (or a name something like that). A great piece of history here and I hope someday the interiors of the buildings can be brought up to code and replicated to look how they did in their heyday so we can get a real feel of walking into the businesses (also a rebuild of the Lafayette Hotel would be amazing, even if just a smaller scale). I'm glad what is there has been preserved by the NPS! I have to say, I left West Virginia with a treasure trove of history!

The horses are well-taken-care of and seem happy. No beefaroni in these horses' diets. But the horses who pulled out carriage did like getting apple Pop Tarts as treats, which was cute. The carriage tour goes all around downtown Lexington, and we saw the old hospital, cemetery, two universities, historic houses and lots more. The pace of travel is slow, so you have lots of time to look around and ask questions. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Lexington, and answered all of our questions. Afterward, you get to pet the horses and take pictures with them. I would definitely recommend this carriage tour to someone visiting Lexington for the first time.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize the carriage service closes early and requires advance tickets. They only have one carriage, so it's not like other cities where multiple carriages run in rotation and you can wait for the next one. It was disappointing to miss out, especially since the experience seemed fantastic. I'm sure it would've been a 5-star ride had I been able to go. Just a heads-up to future visitors: book ahead if you're hoping for a carriage ride--don't count on just walking up.
