As soon as I arrived, an elegant yet friendly lady greeted and welcomed me, explaining this unique establishment and what it had to offer. I explained how today I came to learn about the place and have dinner with a non-alcoholic drink since I was driving. She served me a glass of water and explained the different items on the menu. The menu included artisanal cheeses, charcuterie boards, house-made dips, and made-to-order paninis, as well as a Cheesecake Flight sweet. I ordered the Peaks of Otter Panini which contained Pulled Pork, Swiss Cheese, Pickles, and Mustard. And was served with kettle fried potato chips. While I waited for my order to be served on one of their beautiful polished walnut tables, I observed how some guests had a Wine Flight paired with a Charcuterie Board. And how their knowledgeable staff and owner guided the guests through unique varietals. When my food was ready it was brought to my table. The Peaks of Otter Panini was amazing. It had fresh, juicy pieces of pork, that together with the Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard tasted more like a gourmet Cuban Sandwich. And the chips were also fresh and crispy. Before leaving I walked around and noticed they had a back dining room as well as an outside dining area. Their wine selection focused on small, boutique wineries, offering a diverse range of local, domestic, and international wines. They also had some shelves full of local artists woodwork items for sale. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and its high-quality food, wines, and products from local artists. On my way out I met with a local couple of friends and remained talking with them for almost an hour. Again, I highly recommend this place and am looking forward to returning with some friends.

After being ranked 4th among Yelp's Top 50 Most Prolific Elites of 2025, a distinction recognizing my consistent community engagement and high-quality contributions, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants, businesses, and establishments, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to go back and write follow-up reviews on those places that impressed me the most during 2025, and Bread Craft Bakery, located in Downtown Roanoke, is the perfect example of one of them. Bread Craft is a premier, artisan European-style bakery established in 2006 by owner Alex Eliades, who besides having a passion for baking, has over 25 years of baking experience, and leads the bakery focusing on traditional slow-fermentation techniques. The bakery is known for its high-quality, scratch-made sourdough, pastries, and Croissants. It evolved from a wholesale operation into a popular 6,000 square foot café on Church Avenue, also supplying local restaurants. The bakery specializes in Franch and German-style baking, utilizing sourdough as a natural leavener. It servers breakfast and lunch items, including sandwiches, salads, and some creative breakfast egg entrées. They are open Wednesdays through Sundays from 8:00AM - 2:00PM and are well known for running out of items before the end of the day. For this review I visited the Bakery / Café for breakfast on two consecutive Wednesdays. The first Wednesday I arrived too late to be able to have their Chorizo & Eggs Cocotte from their Breakfast menu. Breakfast is only served until noon, and I found out about this on that day. So instead I had a Cheese Danish and a house-made Mocha Coffee. Both items were delicious. On the second Wednesday I arrived much earlier for breakfast. Luckily, right before a whole rush of customers arriving to place Take-out orders. As soon as I walked inside I immediately felt comfortable with its clean and contemporary architectural design and decor, and an exposed red brick wall that gave it a warm ambiance. One can see that the owner spent a substantial amount in renovating the place when they moved here, and that they took good care of it, because it looked as if it had just opened for the very first time yesterday. While I was looking over all the baked items they had, I received a friendly greeting and warm welcome from a lady behind the counter who seemed to be the manager and took my order. To start I ordered a Chorizo Quiche which happened to be the Quiche of the day, and a house-made Mocha Coffee. Then since I was planning to turn this into a Brunch, for my main entrée I ordered their Chorizo Cocotte from the Breakfast menu. And for dessert I had a Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant that was simply irresistible. Everything tasted amazingly delicious, especially since I love Chorizo. The Quiche had an amazing crust with the eggs inside cooked with the perfect amount of chorizo. The Chorizo Cocotte was served in an elongated bowl with two poached eggs over Spanish sausage, accompanied by three slices of freshly made Baguette. And if all this wasn't enough, the Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant was the perfect ending dessert to this fabulous put together Brunch. Oh and the coffee was the best of the best. Wonderful ambiance, amazing food, and extraordinary customer service. I highly recommend this Bakery/Café whenever you're in the area. Have you ever took a food tour!? If not, please do!! This was my first food tour I've ever took, in a city I've never been, I had no idea it was even a thing. First of all I would like to say how much we learned on this tour. We knew nothing about the city of Roanoke and learned so much about this city. Second of all, the tour guide was the best! She answered any questions we had, was very informative, and made sure we were comfortable by asking if we had an allergies and telling us where we would take bathroom breaks. And third of all, every single place we tasted had amazing food. I can't say enough how awesome this tour was. It made us want to go back to all the restaurants we went to after sampling the food. The samples we got were also pretty big samples and some of them even included a taste of beer! The tour was so worth the price and I would highly recommend it to anyone!! read more

I have done several walking tours in other cities, This was my first food/history walking tour. Gilbert, our guide, did a great job of filling us in on some of the history of the area and was very knowledgeable about things past as well as present. The food at all the stops was absolutely delicious. We returned to one of the establishments on the tour later for dinner, and I know at least one other couple was making sure they had dinner reservations at another of the restaurants on the tour. This was a birthday gift for a friend and he and I are already discussing our next foray into the area to enjoy more of the places and restaurants we covered in the tour. Highly recommend the tour - well worth it! We also happened to take advantage of the addition of tickets to a special exhibit at the Taubman museum included at a minor additional cost. The Appalachian 'Shine & Spirits tour was outstanding. We drove from Blacksburg and it was very convenient to have a parking and pickup point just off I-81. All three tour stops were unique, engaging and interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable, attentive, and focused on making the trip enjoyable. There were a generous number of tastings at each stop, and even more variety than we expected. The historical aspect of the tour is fascinating, especially the hand-made still at Twin Creeks and the chance to talk to the owner/builder about his experience. It was also great to be able to relax and sample the drinks and atmosphere without having to worry about driving. The bus is a comfortable ride, even on the curvy rural roads. This tour is a unique experience and well worth the drive from the New River Valley. read more

Roanoke Food Tours just launched its new tour in Lexington, VA and it did not disappoint! Not only do you have the opportunity to learn about the history of this charming town, but the tour includes sampling of a number of the restaurants, each using locally sourced ingredients in their offerings and leaving you with the satiated knowledge that you will be back. Amelia was the consummate host escorting us seamlessly from one venue to the next filling our minds with nuggets of history of the town, its origins and founding principles, with accuracy and humor and then seating us at another dining experience in between the locations. Went on a Roanoke food tour today. Super fun and pretty educational too! I am originally from the Star City but haven't lived here permanently in years...amazing the facts and stories you don't know about your own home town. The food was good, portions substantial, nice variety of stops (loved being introduced to a new coffee joint and tasting the spices at Cedars Lebanese) and Larry, the tour guide, was super nice and knowledgeable ( in fact, my sitter canceled and I had to bring my son, stroller and all, and he helped me over the curbs and reworked the tour so I could use elevators and ramps:) fun experience for a local, but would be fun to do with out-of-owners or the in laws too! read more

We joined 11 other folks and our tour guide Amelia for a 3 hour walking tasting tour of some of Roanoke's historic and eclectic dining venues. It was wonderful. Amelia is so personable and got us all cohesive as a group right off. She is chock full of interesting historical facts, which she shared with us. The food and drink offerings at the 7 establishments were varied and delicious in their own right. It's a great way to be introduced to dining choices in the Star City of the South, to learn about the area, hear old stories and legends, and meet new people. I am new to Roanoke and have wanted to get out and explore the area. I had the privilege of going on the Downtown Roanoke Food Tour tour last week, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. There were only a few of us on the tour, which turned out being good (we didn't have to crawl over each other to sample or see anything). The tour guide was very knowledgeable and made learning about the city interesting. Each of the places that we stopped to sample were both unique and fantastic, and I'll be going back to try more. It is a three hour tour, but the time passes so quickly that you barely notice. One tip: do not eat before this tour! read more

It was such a great time. I was on the first tour and it seemed like they'd been doing it for years. There was a fun cross section of stops and a lot of interesting history as well. There were foods I had never tried before and even though I don't like coffee I really enjoyed the coffee school. Downtown Roanoke is a very interesting and vibrant place and this tour shows it off nicely. We did the Lexington Food and Culture tour. It was great! I've been to Lexington many times, but this tour really gave me some great information and introduced us to some wonderful restaurants. We started at the iconic Southern Inn and were not disappointed. Then to a great taco place. The most surprising was Blue Phoenix, a vegan restaurant. Who knew vegan food could be so good! The Red Hen served fantastic risotto. We ended at a cheese shop and had some wonderful bites. I've lived in Roanoke all my life and I ate at restaurants I've never been to and learned lots of history about my city. The tour guide, Larry, was entertaining and had obviously researched a lot to give such a delightful presentation. The food was wonderful! We ate so well that I was glad we walked to justify the delicious spoon bread, shrimp & grits and more. My favorite part was 'bread school' where we learned and sampled. We did the Hop-On-Hop-Off Brewery Tour, it was a BLAST! Chris was our guide, very knowledgeable and really helped my dad choose what breweries to stop at (we're not from VA so we're not familiar with the local beer). Chris was always spot-on with time for pick ups and drop-offs. He even let us in on a tip to get a free T-shirt! I don't drink, but wanted to something special for my dad and I still had a really great day on this tour! This was the best tour ever! We took the Craft Beer tour and were super impressed. The tour guides, Larry and Marcus, were very knowledgeable and brought us behinds the scenes- which was a nice surprise. Not only did they drive us around they provided burgers, snacks, and water on the bus. At the end of the tour we ended up back at the first brewery went back in and bought a growler. The property is situated about 20 min north of downtown Bedford close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can take a stroll on the property and enjoy the numerous plants and flowers native to the area. There's also a small creek to check out. We enjoyed sitting on the porch covered with different plants and greenery to watch the local hummingbirds buzz around and visit flowers. Our bedroom was cozy with a super comfy bed, sitting area to watch TV, and private bathroom with excellent shower pressure. There was also a small fridge in the common area to store perishable items from our cooler. Sally was a wonderful B&B host and made unique and tasty breakfasts each morning keeping in mind our dietary restrictions. Overall the experience was pleasant and relaxing. I look forward to making a future visit. P.S. - Sally also creates magnificent stained glass art which she sells if you're interested. We had never stayed at a traditional bed and breakfast and while the idea was charming (I've seen my share of Hallmark movies), thought that the experience was reserved for a different demographic...I thought the rooms were going to be dated and filled with frilly lace, that the dynamic with the owners was going to be awkward, that we would have to engage in forced conversation with other guests. It's not that we're antisocial, on the contrary, I just had a lot of misconceptions swirling around my head. I trust my husband though, he went ahead and booked it. I can't speak highly enough of our experience with Chris, Jayne, and their little pup Jax. When we mentioned that we would be getting to Roanoke a bit earlier than their check-in time, they were available to welcome us with smiling faces. Chris showed us the before/after of the home's renovations and how it was salvaged, the only one of four houses on the block where the other three were condemned. The home itself is gorgeous, they have put a lot of thought and care into how the rooms are decorated - the photos on this Yelp page are outdated, their website (blacklanterninn.com) does a better job of showcasing their beautiful accommodations. Chris and Jayne live on the first floor with 2 rooms and a shared kitchen on the second floor and a suite on the third floor. We were one of only two rooms booked for the evening, we never saw the other couple as they arrived later and left earlier than us - it was like we had the whole place to ourselves. Chris recommended a number of local breweries, bars, and restaurants for us to explore - he pointed out their 2nd floor deck, complete with cozy blankets and a fireplace heater (perfect for us to share a late night glass of wine). We stayed in the Black Lantern Room which was bright and cheerful, it looked like a page straight out of a restoration hardware catalog. The bed was incredibly comfortable and a welcome sight after a 5 hour drive and an afternoon/evening of eating/drinking our way through downtown Roanoke. In the morning we enjoyed a delicious all-organic breakfast crafted by Jayne. We were treated to yogurt sourced from New Hampshire, an incredible gluten-free coffee cake made with sweet potato flour (that Chris has gone on quite the goose chase to track down), and a veggie filled egg frittata on an english muffin with swiss cheese and bacon. I typically have to hide vegetables into my husbands food, but even knowing what was baked into his breakfast he hummed his way through (a sign he is enjoying his meal) the sandwich; we were also treated to Roanoke's own H&C coffee. We enjoyed our breakfast along with the company of Jax and the kind and genuine conversation of Jayne and Chris - they truly put a lot of love into the experience they provide their guests. As we were leaving, Jayne handed us 2 little baggies with locally baked croissants for our 4 1/2 drive down to North Carolina - they really do think of everything. I can't speak highly enough of our short stay here and would absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend the Black Lantern Inn and our gracious hosts to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

Jayne is an fantastic chef and makes a delicious breakfast. They are also both incredibly thoughtful and surprised us with cookies after the exam and a bag of snacks for our drive home. The inn itself is beautiful and conveniently located. Highly, highly recommend this place if you are ever in Roanoke.

The common room in the main building was full of area lore and photographs. There is a comfortable sitting area, and well stocked snack area with fresh fruits, muffins, cold cereals, cookies, and various drinks including sodas, juices, milk and coffee. The only thing I would recommend is taking a cooler with ice if you like to have cold drinks and the like in your room. There wasn't a small dorm fridge in the caboose when we stayed. For what the stay costs, I would expect one, rooms that cost a third as much almost always have one, and a microwave. The staff were very pleasant, and very easy to get ahold of when needed. The main building and caboose are within walking distance of the Paint Bank General Store, Swinging Bridge Restaurant and Tingler's Mill. Just a little note for those not familiar with a caboose, they are small. Room is limited and quarters are tight. I expected this and planned for it, so it wasn't an unexpected issue for me.

Liz, the innkeeper, is the hostess with the mostess, with a generous breakfast menu to choose from that she carefully prepares to start the day off right! She has great suggestions and information for points of interest in the area. Her attention to detail to make our stay comfortable and relaxing was so appreciated.
