An amazing set of Falls. See the Lower falls if you can…read more This is one of the best sights along the entire drive. There are 3 different sights to see at this stop. There are upper, middle and lower falls. Let's start at the beginning. There is a parking lot for about 30 cars directly off the road. There is a set of restrooms in the parking lot across from the trailhead. The trailhead has a solid pathway of switchbacks that leads to an observation point to the upper falls viewpoint. For people that want to shortcut the windy path, there is a straighter trail that goes directly down the hill to the first viewpoint. From there, there is a boardwalk with lots of steps that leads down the a bridge that crosses the river. Then more boardwalk and a steel set of stair to two platforms to view the middle falls. More boardwalk along the river and a large wooden stair platform leads to the lower falls. If you get a chance, you should see all three as each is unique and all are beautiful as much as the walk is enjoyable. Just remember, walking down is easy and you have to walk back up to return to the parking lot. Well worth the walk. Enjoy.

While we decided to just stick with hiking, the national park offers rafting, fishing, hunting, and bridge walking. The canyon rim visitor center was packed with useful information and history, the staff were friendly and helped us map out our day. This national park has free entry which was a nice bonus! If you're camping go early because you can't reserve campsites and they fill up fast. We couldn't find a spot for the first night and ended up having to stay at a paid campground outside the park. The second night we found a spot at Meadow Creek campground, it's an open field surrounded by trees. Don't miss the waterfall or the old railroad town of Thurmond! Those were the highlights of our trip.

The newest National Park!…read more We did the Bridge Walk and drove the Fayette station road. Both highly recommended! You'll cover all angles of the bridge (well, not an aerial view) by doing both. The bridge walk was a unique, bucket list experience and the 8 mile one way drive was very picturesque. I wish we had time to do the whitewater rafting. It's class 4, so if you're inexperienced you definitely need an outfitter and a guide. Next time! Make sure you visit the Canyon Rim visitor center too which has an epic view of the bridge and canyon in back!

You just have to hike a short distance on the Kaymoor Trail from the trailhead. You will cross over a creek on a small bridge. It had been raining for a couple of days prior, so the waterfall was flowing really nicely. The unique thing about this waterfall is that a lot of the rocks had moss on them. It also continues to fall underneath the trail path. Definitely a nice waterfall to see, and a short hike from trailhead. The path is not paved though, so not stroller friendly. Get outside and enjoy friends!

We took a family vacay to New River Gorge National Park in August and we love chasing waterfalls,…read moreso we went looking for Butcher Branch Falls located on the Butcher Branch trail. When you go to the visitor center, NPS has a list of all the waterfalls in and around the area. To access these falls, you have to start from the Kaymoor Top trailhead to get to the Butcher Branch trail. - Parking - There is ample parking, 2 lots next to each other. Trail details: According to the All Trails app, the trail is about 1.3 miles out and back. The trail is well shaded and lots of trees. I suggest bug spray however. There are quite a few switchbacks. There are some spots where it will split into the Butcher Branch Trail and the climbing access. There is also an orange board to carry anyone out, but hopefully you or any of your people will not need to use that, but remember where it is, just in case. It had been raining off and on during our stay in the area, so the falls were flowing nicely. Great exercise and just a good time and reconnecting with Mother Nature. Tip: Download the NPS app and there are clear instructions on how to get there. Get outside and enjoy (and stay safe)!

This part of the national park is the remnants of an old mining town. One has the option of driving…read moredown into the gorge on a narrow gravel road, or braving the mountainside on foot. A short walk gets you to a splendid old mine, but from there, it is quite an endeavor getting down, with a windy, narrow, slippery trail. When the trail flattens out, it was overgrown, and I definitely would recommend maximum bug spray on this trip. I'm pretty patient with the limitations of this park, but this site got on my nerves a bit; I would hope that an NPS budget would be able to produce easier access. I would strongly dissuade anyone with children, pets, or any limitations in mobility or fitness from attempting the footpath down to Nuttallberg. The village consists mostly of stone foundations barely visible through the undergrowth. The main attraction is something called a "coal tipple", the name of which has a folksy ring to it that oddly contrasts the industrial science that went into it. Indeed, the whole site is full of dynamic clashes in historical phenomena. I have photographed most of the signage around the town, although I skipped the "seldom seen" area. I was running low on water and it didn't seem that exciting, so I let it live up to its name. At the bottom parking lot, there is an outhouse but no running water or electricity, and if anything goes wrong you'll struggle to get a wireless signal in most of the gorge (although I still managed to get some annoying emails somewhere along my walk). Modern train tracks run by, but notably there is no real river access here. By comparison, Thurmond is much more user-friendly, and the river there is accessible by foot. I wish the Nuttallberg site was a little more developed, though the sight of nature quietly retaking a once-thriving hotbed of industry is worth seeing.

Some people like hiking in the mountains. I like walking…read morethrough the city. Some people run along the river. I run on a treadmill with a TV in front of me. Some people eat snakes and bugs. I eat snickers and bananas. But there was one thing I always wanted to try - white water rafting - just like my girl Meryl Streep in "The River Wild" (sans Kevin Bacon trying to kill me). I took a chance and decided that the rafting trip was for me when I had the option during college orientation. I stepped aboard a large raft with about 7 other freshmen newbies and our guide. The guide was very outdoorsy and informative when it came to teaching us how to navigate the rapids safely while also giving us a nature tour of the area. "See that? That's the New River Gorge Bridge. People commit suicide there all the time." *click goes the camera* Making our way down the river was beautiful yet horrifying. I felt like a bipolar woman going through "the change." One second I'd be enjoying the sights and sounds of nature and by the next I would be screaming bloody murder and accusing the guide of trying to kill me. Not.Dramatic.At.All. Along the voyage you're allowed to jump out of the raft and take a dip in the river - not me though, I don't do wet. As the trip continues you face down a variety of rapids and try your best to stay afloat. And of course stay aboard the raft. Not my friend Angie though, she went right overboard. I could have tried to save her, but I wasn't letting go of my paddle nor the safety of my flotation device. Hey... at least she had a life preserver ;( By the end of the day I had one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I was thrilled my college gave me the chance to do this. The rapids are fun, the guides are awesome, the lunch back at the campsite is good, and there are even photos to buy as they have photographers snapping shots at some of the rapids. I'd share my photo with you but this trip was during the days when the doctor said I "had a bit of a weight problem." Me and my father went here for a fun weekend away. He was an instructor with the first white water…read morerafting company in West Virginia and so he had many fond memories of this river. We got there and set up a tent. It was a nice flat area and it was raining but did not flood. The trip itself was a lot of fun. Our instructor was fun and we were kept safe. All in all I would suggest this company to anyone and even if you don't use this company I would strongly suggest rafting this river before you die.
