This is a must do activity in Fayetteville. We were just in town for the weekend and a friend recommended we check this out. Our guide was great. He loved the area and have a great overview of the bridge. He was happy to answer all of my dad's questions. The first few steps walking onto the catwalk under the bridge were a little scary, but then I got used to it. You're strapped into a cable, so you definitely aren't going to fall. The views of the river and gorge from under the bridge are incredible. When you get to the middle of the bridge, they let you sit down and enjoy the view for a bit. I thought it would be scary, but it was really cool. You walk across the entire bridge and then a shuttle brings you back. At 2-3 hours, the tour did feel like it could have been a little shorter. This was the perfect activity to do while it was raining because the bridge acts as a large umbrella! They do tours in almost all weather. I highly recommend doing one of these tours while in the area. We booked ours online the day before, but they said you can show up the day of if there's availability as well. read more

Do it! I am the type to have a panic attack on the county fairy ferris wheel. I've done zip-line obstacle courses where I can't bring myself to do certain drops, etc. because of my fear of heights. At no point during this was I ever antsy or anxious, it was the thrill of a lifetime while feeling completely secure! It is the coolest experience to drive over the bridge, see it while hiking, and then get to hook into the structure of it and walk it yourself! The guides are friendly and fun, and it's a great way to learn about the bridge too. Something about looking down and out into the gorge hundreds of feet below you makes the information sink in differently than just reading a display plaque haha The bus drivers are also a hoot. You'll know what I mean when you go ;) There is a gift shop were you can get the usual type of souvenirs, but also things like phone holsters so you can take some of your own pictures on the walk. Super reasonably priced especially because they could easily charge more when you are a captive audience. Unless you do many things that require everything on you to be strapped on or left behind, I'm sure these items are not something everyone has haha They will also hold your car keys for you, which I appreciated. Special shout-out to Debbie also. She took pictures of us for us on the bridge so we could have a personal memento :) [In addition to being a great guide haha] I was interested in coming to New River Gorge National Park and had been thinking about it for a bit, but as soon as I came across Bridge Walk I knew I had to go. It may sound funny to have planned a whole trip around Bridge Walk specifically but it was more than worth it! You cannot beat the views and the experience itself is hard to capture in words. This was a lot of fun and I highly recommend doing it. Four of us went with a total of 15 in our group. The place is a little hard to find but it is right across the street from the New River Gorge Visitor center. There is plenty of parking. When we got there to check in, they did not have our reservation that we had made on line about 1 month earlier, but we showed them the charge on the credit card and that resolved it. We had Doug as our guide and he was really good! Very informative, easy going and knows a lot about the bridge and the area! He gave several recommendations on other hikes, drives to take, places to go, etc. This is a very safe thing to do. You have a harness clipped on to a cable and the catwalk is about 2' wide. Heights do not bother me so it was no issue.. although I would recommend that if you are really scared of heights don't go. We had a girl on the tour that was scared of heights and got ill feeling and it impacted the length of the tour.. but it worked out fine and we got to see all we needed to. It is 10 degrees cooler under the bridge so if it is a cool day, the wind and temp difference under the bridge will make it very cool!! It was 54F when we were on the ground, but it was overcast and had been raining. It was pretty dang cool under the bridge. If these types of things interest you, it is really worth ! Great views, fun time and you never look at the bridge again the same way! read more

A once-in-a-lifetime Bridge tour If you want a great adventure that you will remember and is unique to this area, then do this bridge walk. It is a tour of the bridge from the structure and catwalk below the bridge. We signed up online and arrived at the location a few minutes early. It is located on the south side of WV-19 where the New Gorge Bridge is built over the New River. Their building is before you get to the New Gorge visitor's center. We were greeted by our tour guide who was wonderfully engaging. He explained what to expect on the tour, ran over safety details, helped us put on harnesses and drove us to the parking lot for the visitors center. We had a group of about 10 people. He escorted us to the center walkway below the bridge where we hooked onto a traveling wire that runs the entire length of the span. The tour is as good as the interaction of the group and our group was good in that we had a lot of questions. He allowed plenty of time for questions, pictures and stops from the beginning to the end. The bridge moves a fair amount and traffic is pretty noisy but it is a great one-of-a-kind tour with really neat views of the river. At the south end of the bridge you are unhooked and loaded onto a van for a drive back to the office. He shared all the pictures that he took of the group and individuals by airdrop. If you go in winter months, wear warm clothes. Also, you can bring your phone so long as it is secured so that it cannot fall or be dropped. They sell lanyards for this if you want. This was an absolutely wonderful tour that I would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area. read more

What a great way to experience a different vantage point of a bridge! We walked (VERY slowly so we could learn everything about the history of the bridge and take lots of photos) the 3,000 foot, 24-inch wide catwalk underneath the bridge. First, let me say that even though my husband is afraid of heights, he was totally ok with this! You are strapped into a safety harness and there really is no way you could "fall" off the catwalk. I mentioned we walked very slowly - this is by no means a fitness walk and I was surprised that it took us over 2.5 hours to walk the just over 3,000-foot span. There were only four of us the day we went and I appreciated the smaller group size (larger groups such as on the annual Bridge Day (which was two days after our walk) would not have been fun! read more

Every January since my diagnosis in 2014, I do something on my bucket list to celebrate my cancerversary, and this year, we did the Bridge Walk. Debbie was our guide and was absolutely phenomenal, as was each and every Bridge Walk staff member. If you want a once in a lifetime experience that will truly help you appreciate the magnitude of the New River Gorge, this adventure is a must. Promised Kaitlyn we'd leave a good review and she deserves it. Very good guide. Overall this was a really fun way to spend an afternoon. I went with wife and two kids (10 and 11). If you're worried about COIVD, our group was small and everyone wore masks on the bus on the way to the bridge (which is only about a 3 minute ride). Additionally you're outdoors and everyone is facing forward so you're not really breathing in people's face. If you're worried about heights, it's really not that bad after once you get out and the guide starts talking. You're on a catwalk the whole time with rails on either side so even without the harnesses it would be pretty safe. Kids loved it and it makes for some great photos/video. read more

If you're hanging out around the New River Gorge, you're probably there because you want to, like, see the New River Gorge. And if you want to see the New River Gorge, you probably want to see the New River Gorge Bridge. And if so, that 45-second drive across the bridge itself might not do it for you. And even that great view from the Visitor Center Overlook might not do it entirely for you. So if you find yourself desiring more, there's only one thing you can do: walk the bridge. The bridge's catwalk underneath the bridge itself gives you an amazing view that you can soak in during a 2+ hour walk. Doug was our guide and he was fantastic - he answered questions, gave us some good detail, and really took the walk at the pace we wanted to take it. We ended up staying on the bridge for over 2.5 hours, because we lucked out with several falcons hanging out near us and wanted to observe. We also saw rafters, heard the lonesome whistle of a train as it chugged along 900 feet below us, everything. I was a little worried as the date approached because the weather forecast looked horrid, but nothing to fear. If it's sunny, I can only imagine how far into forever you'd be able to view. As for us, it alternated rain under overcast skies, resulting in this mist that made the land feel as ancient as the New River itself is. And the bridge itself is your umbrella, so no worries about getting wet. Just about everyone who has seen my photos and heard about this asked me if I was scared, or they comment on how crazy it must be to walk it. I point out that you're tethered for the entire walk and it is essentially impossible to fall. You're only crazy if you get an opportunity like this and you don't take it. read more

This review references the customer service and employees as my nephew & I did not complete our catwalk adventure. Everyone was extremely nice! The bus driver (I can't recall her name) was very friendly. Kelsey, our guide, was absolutely amazing especially when helping my nephew who became scared as we were getting hooked up to the cables. She was comforting, patient, and is overall great with children. My nephew has done zip lining & many bi plane rides around the gorge so I think the issue he had was with the catwalk itself. It shakes as cars cross the bridge & even more with tractor trailers. Just something to consider when planning to take kids. :) Finally, Doug was very considerate in helping us resolve the situation so that I can return to do the bridge walk on a later date without penalty. read more

We had a small group on the walk, 5 plus the guide. Everyone was very friendly and outgoing, very good at making you feel at ease. We did not feel rushed and the guide took his time telling you about the bridge and walkway. Plenty of time for photos and taking in the view. If you want a different perspective of the famous New River Gorge Bridge, this is a great place for it! Not only do you get great views of West Virginia's beautiful mountains, but the tour guides are knowledgeable about the area and point out hiking paths and other facts about the bridge itself. Even if the weather is gross, you will not get too wet because you walk under the bridge on the catwalk most of the time. As previous reviews point out, you will be tethered the whole time for safety, but the catwalk shakes substantially from the highway traffic above. My family and I decided to do this because...well...how often can you experience walking across a bridge 900 feet in the air? It was just the five in my party and Doug and Ron (Doug was the guide, Ron was the man with the plan in the station). Both guys were freaking AWESOME and informative (Doug told us stories the whole trip across) and we had such a great time! I won't lie--I was a little nervous when we got up and started out because the bridge itself was a little icy, but Doug was sweet and understanding and FUNNY about the whole thing ("I'd like to remind you now of the non-refundable clause", lol). The views were beautiful and now this is something we can all say we've accomplished. We even got stickers at the end to commemorate! And hot chocolate was given to us at our pickup, because it was a wee bit cold that day. Side note--the bridge railings are WET and COLD--soaked through my gloves in a matter of minutes. What did Doug do? Gave me his hand warmers. Dude. You can't find people like these guys anymore, and I'm so glad that we did :) read more
