An amazing set of Falls. See the Lower falls if you can…read more This is one of the best sights along the entire drive. There are 3 different sights to see at this stop. There are upper, middle and lower falls. Let's start at the beginning. There is a parking lot for about 30 cars directly off the road. There is a set of restrooms in the parking lot across from the trailhead. The trailhead has a solid pathway of switchbacks that leads to an observation point to the upper falls viewpoint. For people that want to shortcut the windy path, there is a straighter trail that goes directly down the hill to the first viewpoint. From there, there is a boardwalk with lots of steps that leads down the a bridge that crosses the river. Then more boardwalk and a steel set of stair to two platforms to view the middle falls. More boardwalk along the river and a large wooden stair platform leads to the lower falls. If you get a chance, you should see all three as each is unique and all are beautiful as much as the walk is enjoyable. Just remember, walking down is easy and you have to walk back up to return to the parking lot. Well worth the walk. Enjoy.

While we decided to just stick with hiking, the national park offers rafting, fishing, hunting, and bridge walking. The canyon rim visitor center was packed with useful information and history, the staff were friendly and helped us map out our day. This national park has free entry which was a nice bonus! If you're camping go early because you can't reserve campsites and they fill up fast. We couldn't find a spot for the first night and ended up having to stay at a paid campground outside the park. The second night we found a spot at Meadow Creek campground, it's an open field surrounded by trees. Don't miss the waterfall or the old railroad town of Thurmond! Those were the highlights of our trip.

The newest National Park!…read more We did the Bridge Walk and drove the Fayette station road. Both highly recommended! You'll cover all angles of the bridge (well, not an aerial view) by doing both. The bridge walk was a unique, bucket list experience and the 8 mile one way drive was very picturesque. I wish we had time to do the whitewater rafting. It's class 4, so if you're inexperienced you definitely need an outfitter and a guide. Next time! Make sure you visit the Canyon Rim visitor center too which has an epic view of the bridge and canyon in back!

You just have to hike a short distance on the Kaymoor Trail from the trailhead. You will cross over a creek on a small bridge. It had been raining for a couple of days prior, so the waterfall was flowing really nicely. The unique thing about this waterfall is that a lot of the rocks had moss on them. It also continues to fall underneath the trail path. Definitely a nice waterfall to see, and a short hike from trailhead. The path is not paved though, so not stroller friendly. Get outside and enjoy friends!

I included a photo of the elevation during the hike. There are a number of parking spots at the trailhead (maybe 25 or so). During a weekday morning, there were only about 7-10 cars there. This is one of the two "must do" hikes in the New River Gorge National Park, and I'm glad we had the experience.

It took about half an hour to get our harnesses on and get shuttled to the bridge walk site. We spent about an hour walking the bridge one way and the shuttle picked us up at the opposite end. Our guide was Pete and he was full of bridge knowledge. He snapped a photo for us too. Most importantly, I also felt safe the entire time. The tour runs rain or shine. No refunds. We got lucky and it was clear skies (a little windy) for our 9:30am tour, but the 11am definitely got a bit wet later that day. While vacationing in Pembroke, VA we discovered an unusual creek that I simply had to yelp about…read more What makes a simple ordinary creek yelp worthy you ask? Well, it disappears! At the time of our visit, we had no idea of this phenomenon. As we drove to our Air B&B location, we simply thought the creek along the way had dried up from lack of rainfall and didn't give it another thought. Later, after exploring the area we learned that the two covered bridges we visited were actually on the SAME RIVER as the dried up one near our accommodations. How could that be? The dried creek bed is located approx. 5 miles downstream from the covered bridges, and less than a mile from where it reappears and actually flows into the larger New River. ~ CONFUSED? We were too until we discovered this area of Virginia is rich in what is called KARST TOPOGRAPHY. To avoid complicated scientific terms, just simply picture one of those multi-level bridges you see in cities like New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia and even Portland. Imagine an opening in the top layer causing all the traffic to flow to the lower level. However, when the bottom layer is full, the excess traffic is forced back up to the upper layer (hypothetically speaking). When there is sufficient water flow, you would never know the water is actually leeching underground to a cave-like drainage system. The water would fill the underground system to the point where all of the excess water stays above ground in the rivers basin. But when the water flow is lower and there is not enough water to fill the cavity, the water disappears underground (not visible on the surface) only to reappear as if from a spring near New River into which it flows. ~~~ Most people would probably find this sort of information nerdy and underwhelming, but I found it to be absolutely fascinating. I only wish I had taken pictures of the dried creek bed, but at the time of our visit, I had no idea of what was actually occurring. Our host home told us the creek was full just two weeks prior from heavy rainfall. Not to mention we saw with our own eyes a significant amount of water in the creek below the bridges just a few miles away. I swear, you are never too old to learn something new. 2020 / 32

Meadow Creek Campground is a terrific place stay outdoors while exploring around New River Gorge…read moreNational Park. When first planning out my itinerary for visiting the park, I had researched that there were plentiful campgrounds located within the area. So...I knew I would be camping out somewhere for my first night at New River Gorge. I just didn't know where exactly I would end my day. Well...after finishing hanging out at the Grand View section of the park in late afternoon, I was okay to start looking for a campground. I always refer to the trusty app on my phone called Campendium, to find my campsites. And as usual, Campendium did not disappoint! I quickly browsed all the reviews for Meadow Creek and was excited to come here. From the Grand View part of New River Gorge (which btw, is one of the primary highlights of the park), it was just 17 miles to drive to Meadow Creek. And best of all the location of the campground was in the proper direction for my next destination, being Sandstone Falls. Let me give some details about how simple it is come to Meadow Creek and get a campsite for the night... and yes, it has to be one of the easiest spots (in terms of finding a place to rest at while on a whim) I have ever come across along my journeys around the USA. - Cell phone reception works fine in the area, so simply plug "Meadow Creek Campground" into Google Maps and you'll easily be directed here. - It is free to camp out! How cool. Once I arrived, the instruction board mentioned to just pick a campsite and it's yours! How simple! - There must have been about 25 - 30 campsites available for choosing, and basically there was no one here. I had my pick of any site. - All the sites were situated on soft, fluffy grass, which always is beneficial when pitching a tent. This way you can have a gentle, comfortable sleep. - The sites all had barbecue pits. They were well spaced apart from each other to feel like you have privacy. You can start charcoal grills also. - A very interesting fact is this...trailers and RVs are not allowed!!! Prohibited! That's so peculiar? Usually, you have RV sites and parks that don't allow tents. But here it was the opposite. So nice for me, someone who carries a tent in the trunk of my car, to feel like I was prioritized, lol. Btw, I noticed the folks that were spending the night here actually slept in their cars rather than pitching tents. - They have vault toilets houses but they're extremely well maintained and clean. In fact, when I stepped inside one of them, it smelt beautifully, with a nice fragrance. - Located just 2.5 miles down the road is the Sandstone General Store and Eatery. This local little joint has groceries, gas and supplies...ideal for picking up anything to cook on your barbecue. You could even purchase prepared sandwiches if you don't feel like cooking. And prices here were extremely cheap, considering there's not much around to this part of the park. - You can do some hiking/walking right along the New River to get some fresh air and appreciate the woodsy/forestry setting. - When I visited back in the middle of May of 2022, the weather was perfect and not too chilly at night. Couldn't have asked for a better evening with a few stars up in the sky. - I believe you can stay up to 14 evenings here, all for free! You can camp for free, use the facilities for free, and occupy a campsite all for free. Thank you to the National Parks Services for Meadow Creek Campground! Although Meadow Creek was a wonderful experience for me...I do need to mention some parts that were a little bit of a letdown... 1. Cell phone coverage in this specific campground was minimal. Yet, when I walked down the creek area, my reception worked just fine. Hmmm? 2. Okay, yes, the train tracks. During the night I did hear trains running on the tracks that were very loud. Still, I don't mind these types of things as I'm an easy sleeper. 3. This is going a bit overboard, no there aren't any AMP power stations, lol. Overall, I can't say enough good things about Meadow Creek Campground. It was certainly one of the best highlights to my time visiting New River Gorge National Park.
