On our way home from my cousin Wanda's home in VA, we stopped at Sandstone Falls State Park outside of Hinton, WV on the Greenbrier River. The park has limited free parking so, go early for a parking spot. The park is free to enjoy. There is a restroom and a small Visitors Center. Plenty of signage and a great boardwalk to enjoy. There are several places to enter the water for swimming in or around the falls. I took Deacon rock hopping and he enjoyed it so much. He also enjoyed going down on the Rocky bank getting wet in the River and throwing rocks. He gathered some rocks to paint and some smaller ones with seashells to take home for his collection. We had a very nice time!! Definitely recommend and going back again!!!

This is one of my favorite roadtrip side quests that we've ever taken. I was looking for someplace to stretch our legs during the drive from OH to VA and this was almost perfectly halfway. We stopped, walked the boardwalk and fell in love with the falls. It's not a high drop, but there are so many of them and the whole areas is absolutely gorgeous. My favorite was an area of the boardwalk where you could walk right down to the river's edge and then walk along some rocks for an even better view of the falls, river and mountains. They are right when they say WV is almost heaven! We'll be back.

This is part of the New River Gorge National Park, of which I've visited quite a lot of. This is closer to the dam that is upstream of the gorge, and you'll likely catch a view of the dam on the way. The reason for this is that the road on the side of the river that goes to the falls has no connection to the main highway (I-64), meaning that you will need to take a roundabout drive through narrow windy roads, crossing the river in the town of Hinton. This can be scenic, but be warned that this is a longer trip than you'd think. The boardwalk crosses and island that gives views of what is not one tightly funned flow of water, but a range of sandstone cliffs over which the water flows. A variety of foliage was growing on the island and in the water. The boardwalk was helpful and is good for those that need it, but there is ample opportunity to wander off the boardwalk, and a trail encircles the island. There were a few facilities and a gravel parking lot, but no fresh water. The sandstone visitor center on the main highway may also be worth a stop. The sights here aren't as spectacular as they are in the heart of the gorge, but it is a nice place to visit.

Beautiful falls with lots of stops for photos and views. Nice short walk along a wooden boardwalk. Use the bathroom before you arrive unless you have a strong stomach for the primitive facilities.

The bottom of the falls provides a great foot spa after a day of hiking.

If you find yourself in the New River Gorge area - and recommend you make that happen, don't miss this. Love majestic, towering falls? So do I - but these wowed me just as much. love challenging, rock scrambles? Don't let the fact that this is more of a stroll dissuade you. It is a real treasure.

I'm giving this a 3 just because it was a heck of a long drive to get there from Summerville, for not a lot. TaKe in to consideration that we don't hike, nor did we fish or swim. We just came to look at the falls which in August, weren't as flowing as the photos we saw online.

This is more of a scenic walk on a nice boardwalk and clear path than a hike which makes it very accessible to anyone and everyone. Great views of the lake and waterfall (see my pics) There is a small parking lot right in front of the entrance. Rocky path to drive there, some pavement but some gravel and dirt.

This is a must-see for the area. There are many sights to see in the New Gorge National Park. This is one of the top ones for the entire park. You could see it from the Overlook across the river on the East side but the view from there is from a long way away. To actually see the falls you have to drive down to the river get on WV 20, go south through Hinton and then drive back up WV26 (New River Road). There are many sites along this side of the river like rapids and a rest area but the best part is the Sandstone falls at the end. There is a nice parking lot containing about 40 spaces and a rest area at the falls. There is a very nice boardwalk that leads the visitor to some very nice views of the falls and the river. There are also some trails that lead off the boardwalk and through the forest. If you or your party are up to it, you may like to go through the forest (south) to get a better view of the falls or to the north along a trail through the forest. Please be careful as the path can be difficult going depending on what you choose. I liked this view of the falls the best and was glad I made the drive to see it. I highly recommend it to my fellow travelers.

While we decided to just stick with hiking, the national park offers rafting, fishing, hunting, and bridge walking. The canyon rim visitor center was packed with useful information and history, the staff were friendly and helped us map out our day. This national park has free entry which was a nice bonus! If you're camping go early because you can't reserve campsites and they fill up fast. We couldn't find a spot for the first night and ended up having to stay at a paid campground outside the park. The second night we found a spot at Meadow Creek campground, it's an open field surrounded by trees. Don't miss the waterfall or the old railroad town of Thurmond! Those were the highlights of our trip.

You'll cover all angles of the bridge (well, not an aerial view) by doing both. The bridge walk was a unique, bucket list experience and the 8 mile one way drive was very picturesque. I wish we had time to do the whitewater rafting. It's class 4, so if you're inexperienced you definitely need an outfitter and a guide. Next time! Make sure you visit the Canyon Rim visitor center too which has an epic view of the bridge and canyon in back!

My husband and I like to hike so on our recent visit to Roanoke we started exploring options. We…read morelearned that McAfees Knob is the most photographed spot on Appalachian trail. We were a bit nervous about an 8 mile hike, but decided we were going to take it on. That hike was no joke, it kicked my butt. However, I did it and I am not someone in amazing shape by any means. There were some very steep/uphill parts and some stretches that were mostly flat. Trail was well marked. I was happy for the variation and we stopped as needed. It is doable, its just long. They say it takes you about 4 hours, which was accurate for us as we arrived around 10am, finished about 2pm. We did the AT trial up and decided to go for the fire road (runs basically parallel but isn't as strenuous) back as we were already tried. I highly recommend this if you not a serious hiker. Most everything I read kept saying you need to get their early as it gets so busy. That wasn't our experience, but it was an unseasonably colder, windy day so that probably deterred people. We also went on a Thursday to help reduce crowd as recommended. Note there are no bathrooms near parking. We found an outhouse near one of the camping sites about 2/3 way up, which we were grateful for. I am not sure it is being maintained regularly, so bring your own TP and hand sanitizer. Now, the view once you get to the top is absolutely beautiful. You can see out so far while you sit/stand on the rocky overlook. I even slowly inched my way out to the very tip of the rock to get the full 360 view. Breathtaking! We brought some snacks to eat up there to replenish (do this) and enjoy the views. We didn't stay up there as long as I would have liked as it was quite cold with the wind when we no longer had the tree cover. Dress appropriately! After we finished the hike, we took a long nap at our Airb&B. I am not sure I would choose to do it again, but I feel very accomplished that we completed this trail and enjoyed the views and our picutres very much.

What an awesome hike. Our new Thanksgiving tradition has been to go on a hike and this was our pick…read morethis year. We got there around 10am since it's a 3 hour drive from Charlotte. I thought it would be empty on Thanksgiving, but it was pretty crowded. We got a parking spot just fine, but the lot was fairly full. The hike is rated as strenuous, but I thought it was moderate. It's about 4 miles to Mcafee Knob from the parking lot making it 8 miles round trip. We took the Appalachian Trail on the way there and the fire road on the way back. The fire road is flatter and wider--an easier hike overall. Parts of the AT were covered in leaves making it a bit hard to hike. Everyone says the last mile is hard. It's uphill but I didn't find it to be too steep. The views at the end are gorgeous. Luckily it wasn't too crowded and we didn't have to wait to get our picture. We didn't stay at the top long because it was incredibly windy which made it pretty cold even though the rest of the hike was comfortable. The whole hike with stops took us just under 4 hours. With views and difficulty combined, we thought it was a great hike!
