We contracted with Brickland Homes in 2013. We've been in the house for two years now, so have had time for the emotions of home building to subside. We can still say, without exaggeration, that working with Brickland was one of the worst experiences we've ever had. They claim to be custom home builders, but balked at any requests outside of their 'standard'. They do not have a custom home capability or mentality. Attention to detail is entirely lacking and not once in our interactions did they apologize or take responsibility for issues. They used loopholes and ambiguous contract language to avoid accountability, usually placing blame on us. Change orders did not meet even a minimum level of pricing detail, every change order was incorrect, and all errors were in Brickland's favor. They didn't provide a design consultant, 3D or color renderings during the design stage. Their vendors and subcontractors are not custom quality, and many are barely competent. Our Project Manager was the owner's son, who has a degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies. He was inept, and explained that he was instructed not to respond to us without first getting approval and review from his Mom and Dad. We lived 2 hours away from the build site, and even after multiple, specific requests, progress reports were non-existent. They would not share their project schedule, though assured us one existed. They literally told us that there was 'too much uncertainty and they didn't want to be held accountable'. The build was late in completion, and well over budget. And by the end of the build, our Project manager pretended to lose his phone and would sneak out of the neighborhood if he saw us coming. We have learned from our neighbors that our experience with Brickland was not unique. The list of issues and conflicts we had with them is extensive, but to keep this review somewhat brief, we'll just note that we have a 20 page documentation of our history with Brickland, none of it positive. ***UPDATE*** Our project manage/the owner's son has now written a response to this review. Everything we have stated is true and is the very short version of very long and unpleasant experience. They may have discovered that a few people who were close to hiring them ended up changing their minds after talking with us. My review is from the title services perspective. My job at a major title company was to coordinate the closing of properties by gathering all the information necessary to transfer title on the property. During this process, we worked closely with Brickland Homes, as well as the purchasers of these homes. Their contracts were always written very clearly so there was no confusion on details of the transaction. During these many years of working with Brickland Home purchasers in coordinating the closing of their transactions, the purchasers of Brickland Homes have been very happy and complimentary of their building experiences. They have often voiced compliments for Brickland Homes care and attention to detail afforded them during their experiences. Bought a home from these folks, worst built custom home ever. Duct work insufficient, not energy efficient, substandard materials, the poor work done on the stove top in the kitchen island caused a gas leak that could have killed our entire family much less the cost and repair of same. They built a wall over the jacuzzi tub so it is impossible to repair the tub's motor without pulling out the wall, substandard shower pan in the master bath had to replace and tear all of that out. Industry leading sales/design/construction. Very frustrating warranty experience. We purchased a new Brickland home almost three years ago, so this review is not being written in anger, nor is it being written in order to influence Brickland to correct any outstanding issues with my house. The purchase experience was top notch. The home was a spec build, but we were allowed to make many customizations. Brickland's base design met all of our wants and needs. Pricing was competitive with other builders in the area, and I would say that the overall trim level is at par if not slightly higher than the competition in the area. Changes made after the signing of the sales contract were very reasonably charged such that it appeared that Brickland was not up-charging. We appreciated that Brickland allowed us to build a pool while the house was being built. After the sales contract was signed, Brickland took the initiative to make some design improvements to the house at no additional cost. The first half of our experience (purchasing, designing and building) was very positive, and it was evident that Mr. Bickford and his team intended to build a great home for our family. Brickland needed approximately an additional month to finish construction, but that was not a problem for us. We preferred that everything be done correctly the first time. There were quite a few warranty issues with our house, but nothing serious like foundation problems or leaky roof problems like I've heard from other Brickland customers. Considering that the house is over 6000 square feet in size, I expected that there would be more problems than on a smaller home. Although the Brickland warranty seems to be quite good, many of the problems that we experienced were not covered due to some technicality. Getting the problems with our house corrected was a full time job, and although we were told that many items were not warrantable, Brickland fixed many of them as a courtesy. The number of issues was overwhelming. We understand that things can go wrong when building such a large house, but when we spend over a million dollars, we expect not to be treated like we purchased a $200 000 starter house. We expect to be treated like the honest people that we are. We expect that if something is not right, that it should be made right when one purchases a 6000 square foot, million dollar home. Although many non-warrantable items were taken care of by Brickland, too many were not. Although Brickland was quick to respond in correcting many items, it took a very long time for me to get all of the problems with our house fixed. In order to get many of the problems corrected, because dealing with Brickland's warranty team was often fruitless, I ended up dealing with the suppliers/contractors directly. All but a few of Brickland's suppliers were extremely easy to work with. Primstone (marble countertops), was a big disappointment. They did not stand behind their product or workmanship, and Brickland did not hold them accountable. Factory Builder Stores sold Brickland a Coyote gas grill that has hot spots. If you have a Coyote gas grill, set the burners to medium and put a hot dog on it. The tip of the dog closest to the back of the grill will burn by the time the tip closest to the front of the grill starts to cook. The temperature on the warming rack is hotter than the temperature on the front quarter of the grill surface. Coyote makes a beautiful, well-built grill, with a "searing feature" that burns the food. By "searing feature" I am not referring to a searing burner. After weeks of effort, I was able to return the grill for a refund. Unfortunately, without Brickland's help, I had to modify the granite counter cut-out and the cabinetry to fit the replacement grill. Brickland responded to the initial claim and a tech came to look at the Coyote grill. The tech confirmed that the grill had uneven heating. The tech called Coyote tech support who told him that it was supposed to be that way. Brickland backed away from the issue and I was left to fend for myself. It is only fair to give credit where it is due. Brickland deserves credit for many things as noted above, but unfortunately, we've been left with a very bitter taste in our mouths with respect to the frustration associated with their warranty. I appreciate that Brickland fixed many things that were not warrantable, but in my opinion, they were defects and as such I would expect that the goodwill that made the Brickland team so impressive at the start of the sales/design/building process would carry through to the end to produce a great product with a happy customer. I have a friend who built a home with Cannon. He told me that his parents built with Brickland and had a terrible experience. As such, he knew that he would not build with Brickland. read more

I've been living in my Brickland home for 3.5 years. Here is a summary of my experience. The purchasing process was efficient and pleasant. The trim level is on par if not superior relative to other builders in the area. The value is superior relative to other builders in the area; for example, Brickland homes installs rain gutters as part of their standard trim, while neighbors who built with other builders had to spend around $2k of their own money to have them installed after they bought their house and realized that their builder did not include them. Brickland's design was exceptional. It was in a class of its own and met all of our wants and needs. Up front, Brickland demonstrated that they wanted to build a great house, and they did not over charge for customizations. Most of Brickland's suppliers and contractors are excellent, but a few of them are incompetent. Brickland's warranty team did not resolve many significant issues. Dealing with them was frustrating to say the least, and this is the reason for not giving them a higher rating. I ended up having to contact suppliers and contractors directly in order to get many significant problems corrected because the Brickland warranty person told me that they were not covered by the warranty. I corrected some problems, like smoke detectors that were not connected to the electrical supply, myself. Dealing with the Brickland warranty department, and getting the many problems corrected was a full time job. The end result is a great home, but getting there was a hellish experience. read more

I have witnessed firsthand when I needed a plan revision, price quote or just an answer to a potential client question they told me when they would have it complete and then they delivered what they promised. I find this one of the most important qualities when choosing a builder. I have worked with Brickland Homes for the past 3 years in numerous transactions and have heard only good reviews from each client. When working with a client they take the time to perfect the clients plans while designing a home that compliments the lot.
