Stopped here after an event we were in town for with the whole family for what we hoped would be a quick lunch. Unfortunately, that is not what we got upon being seated immediately. Our server seemed to disappear for various amounts of time when we needed refills or wanted to order. Then after we ordered the food itself took upwards of 25 minutes to arrive. I had hoped that would mean our food would be warm and enjoyable, however, what we were served was lukewarm fries and room temperature sandwiches. At least our kids' meals kept our boys happy. The menu is full of some delicious-sounding options, unfortunately, next time we're in town we may have to choose somewhere else due to this experience. read more

The Brick City Grill has moved across the street wo where the former +39 Restaurant Market & Cantina was located. Gayle, Dad, and I stopped in for Dinner 2 Fridays ago. I had fond memories of the previous location, including several dinners with my Mom (z"l) and Dad, Gayle, and David, a hilarious interaction with a couple of t.u. parents (I went to grad school at Texas A&M), and listening to former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie speak during the Iowa Caucuses. The new space is larger and more comfortable, although they need to solve their noise reverberation issues due to the high ceilings. In fact, we asked to be reseated after the laughing at the next table sounded more like loud witches cackles. The new bar area (with a good selection of draft Iowa beers) is nice and if they wished, they could do a lot more with live music. The menu is almost the same as the old space, and I did notice some omissions (like sliders). Dad enjoyed his Classic Burger, while Gayle and I chose the Back & Bleu Salad, which although "OK", could have been better with dressing on the side, instead of the "drowning" version we experienced. So maybe this time around was more of a 3 Star experience. However, I'll assume that Brick City is working through it's space, staffing, menu, and noise issues, and that my next visit will settle into the experience that I have so enjoyed here. read more

My daughter wanted chicken tenders so we decided to run over here around 8 pm. It happened that RAGBRAI was in town, so I was hoping it wouldn't be too busy. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, but our service was not the greatest. Our server took a very long time to come take our drink order and we already knew what food and appetizers we wanted so we gave her our whole order. The appetizer, fried cheese curds, came out quickly. The breading was a little too thick and crispy for my liking, but my daughter really wanted cheese curds and she loved them. The food came out in an ok amount of time, but it took our server quite a while to come check if we needed anything else or if it was tasting ok. My daughter's kids chicken tenders and fries were fine, a good size portion and she liked them. I got a pretzel burger. There wasn't really too much wrong with it, except I received less than a tablespoon of thousand island dressing in the middle of my burger. It was not enough to even cover the top of the burger or add the flavor of thousand island to the burger, but our server never came back so I couldn't ask for more before I started eating. The burger was just ok, but not the best in Ames for sure. The fries were well cooked and we both enjoyed them. We were never offered a refill on our beverages either, and I would have accepted had our server returned to ask. My husband had been finishing up a tennis match and came to join us as we were finishing at 9 pm. The server came over 5 minutes later and when he and his tennis friend tried to order food said the kitchen had closed 2 minutes earlier. No where did it state the kitchen closed at 9, the restaurant is open until 10. A group from RAGBRAI came in right around the same time and they were turned away as well. Not a great way to welcome visitors into our town for sure. I felt they could have extended their hours for one night and they should also state the kitchen closes earlier, my husband could have given us his order ahead of time so they could have eaten. Lost revenue on a very busy night in town for businesses. I was not highly impressed by this visit to Brick City and as someone who has just moved to Ames, it will not be high on my list of places to go back to at this time even though I live less than 2 minutes away. I'll travel further for better food and service. Oh, one thing I missed mentioning before, my daughter ordered the Chocolate Torte (even though the kitchen was closed) and she enjoyed it. My husband got a gift certificate here so we decided to take advantage of it. We invited a couple friends and we met up at the restaurant/bar. It is a sports themed place, so lots of TVs and an bar you can sit up at. It was decently busy but we were able to snag a table out of the way. The waiter was quick to acknowledge us and help us out. We took out time looking at the menu as the burgers looked fantastic. I was curious about a couple different ones but decided to go in for the The 60/40 burger. If you like bacon, this is your burger. 60% ground beef 40% ground smoked bacon, topped with American cheese, bacon, housemade bacon mayo, lettuce, tomato and onion. I was so intrigued I had to have it. Totally worth it. My hubby got THE 2X4, beef pressed with sautéed onions topped with housemade bacon onion molasses marmalade, onion ring, red onion, bacon, and havarti cheese. As much as I drolled over my burger, he didn't really get the Wow experience as he was hoping from his. I can add that later when he tried mine, he wished hed gone that route. Over all the service was great. They were busy so I am happy with how attentive the waiter was. The food came out in good time. The company was fantastic... but I picked them so yay for me. I think I am tempted enough to return and try the impossible burger. It looked good . Or the jalapeno burger. There was multiple choices in burgers I would try again. Can someone please help me find a good burger place?!? Heard all about their award winning food here and since we were in town we thought we would try it - yeah... not.doing that again The Good: The place looked nice and clean in a neat looking part of Ames. If you come here to watch a game on one of their many TV's it is a good place to hang out with your buddies. My sweet potato fried tasted pretty decent and I liked my wife's honey chicken sandwich with plenty of sauce. The Bad: The staff had their noses so high up in the air, we were surprised they even noticed us sitting there. Seemed pretty annoyed we wanted to come in and have lunch. My Brick House Double was very dry and I had to dig and scour through the burger to find a little dot of their "homemade" 1000 island dressing. Reading many reviews I was worried that my burger would come out like a charcoal chunk. To my surprise it did not, fully cooked but not burnt (positive here). I could find 2 of the 4 advertised slices of cheese on my meal and the grease that settled in my whole mouth left a slimy film all over my mouth for a long time after lunch. The bun may have been quickly grilled to give it a toasted look, however the large amount of butter on it made both, top and bottom bun less then 1/8 of an inch thick and dripping of grease and butter. The Ugly truth: Come here with friends to watch a game and have a few drinks. I ate at the restaurant today, Friday May 3rd at 2 pm. To say I was unimpressed would be charitable. I had high hopes considering it was rated #1 in Story County. I ordered a Guacamole Bacon hamburger with a side salad off the Gluten Free menu. (I have Celiac with a wheat allergy). The GF menu was the reason I wanted to try the restaurant. Plain Iced Tea for the drink. The salad arrived with croutons all over it. WHEAT. I sent it back and they made me a new one. The hamburger arrived lukewarm, no guacamole. The GF bun was so tough I ended up throwing it out. It had the texture of a microwaved bread. (I worked as a cook in a restaurant for several years ) This was the worst hamburger I've ever had in a restaurant! Only ended up eating half of it then lost my appetite. Ice tea was definitely not brewed. It tastes like that tea concentrate garbage. All in all this was a very disappointing and expensive meal. I won't be back. Burgers were wonderful! I requested them to be cooked medium, and the cook did a remarkable job. I did the restaurant's food challenge. I went in during a busy time. I do appreciate that the restaurant offered and allowed me to return later in the night to do the food challenge. The crinkle cut fries had decent flavor, but they were incredibly chewy. The host I encountered was relatively polite. However, I had a few issues with him. I inquired to see if doing the food challenge was a possibility. He said right off the bat, "It's $30 if you fail...". He also asked me if I had money to pay for it, because some people have failed it in the past before, and weren't able to pay for it. I told him I specifically made a trip to do the food challenge. Don't you think I'd bring my wallet and funds with, in case I failed? I pulled my wallet out of my pocket and displayed to him. It's pretty sad he automatically questioned my moral character about whether or not I could afford the challenge, had I failed. I did end up winning the challenge. Where to start, hmmmmm. Would not recommend. The waitresses that were working seemed to like their jobs and anjoy their customers, the waiter we had seemed very annoyed, careless and in a hurry to get us done and dealt with. I had the honey garlic chicken sandwich - the chicken was thin and pretty dry, the bun seemed to have been soaked in butter before thrown on the grill to warm and when I think sauce on a burger I think more than a little dabble. I had to call on another waitress for extra sauce for my sandwich and she was happy to get it for me. I opted for the cheese balls because heard good about them, nothing to write home about.. My husband had the brick city double because he wanted lots of cheese and the thought of the thousand island dressing mess made him happy.. Well sadly there was a little squirt of thousand island mixed in with the bacon melted under the 1 maybe 2 slices of cheese that was on the whole sandwich. We say at the bar and ordered burgers, which they have a claim to fame for being the best in Iowa a couple years ago. Staff was ok. Clean place. More of a bar than family place. Good place to meet friends for drinks. Prices are a bit up but nothing drastic. The burgers are actually average. Nothing that great. Perhaps it's the fact I grew up on a farm with really fresh beef?!?! I don't know, but I expected much more than what I got. Busy place. Lots of TVs for watching games. Very clean, new construction. A spur of the moment trip to celebrate a family birthday and this place is apparently known for their burgers.. Arrived shortly after 11am on a Sunday which turned out to be good fortune. Soon after being seated the town of Ames turned up and people were stacked up like cordwood waiting for a table or booth while there were plenty of empty seats at a fantastic looking bar). The menu features sandwiches, some interesting entrees (almost ordered the pork poutine). Being known for their burgers I felt obligated to try one. Ordered the Farmer Brown. Fried egg, ham, cheddar cheese and a hash brown patty on top...yes please. An order of tots on the side and its potato overload, but I hung tough and worked my way thru it. The other entrees I saw coming to our table looking pretty good. The salads looked to be a good size. Service was decent and if I'm ever back in Ames I'd go back here without reservations. read more

I have now been in for my burger and beer fix and I have been very satisfied both visits. I've had the farmer brown with the fried egg which I do enjoy, I also had the 60/40 Wichita is 60% ground beef and 40%ground bacon. Yes to answer that question right off the bat it is delish. I do like the atmosphere and the bar is nice and I do see it more pricy then some bar/burger places but only by a couple bucks and it's worth it in my opinion. Ordered the Bacon Guacamole Burger for carry out on a Wednesday night. The place was dead. I got home and sliced it in half to find raw beef, yet the outside was charred. Undoubtedly, the meat was thrown onto the grill straight from the freezer. Being a bar applauded for their burgers, I can't imagine the quality of their other food. Great burgers! With so many gourmet burger joints popping up around the country, I was skeptical. Yes, I know they won some big award, but... Happily, I feel rewarded for giving Brick a try, Our server was great, giving us some good suggestions regarding the menu. Taking her advice, we all opted for pretzel buns. A great choice. The core of the burger, the Angus patty, was juicy and flavorful. The selection of sides, ranging from French fries to full salads, was a pleasant surprise. The hamburgers were a little smaller than we expected, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I not a fan of insanely oversized portions. It's only a case of gourmet burger overload that keeps me from awarding five stars. I've also sensed a bit of a foodie backlash directed at Brick for winning the state burger award, which really isn't fair either. Plenty of televisions for sports enthusiasts. My bf and I heard this place serves the best burgers in Iowa. Definitely had to stop in. We ordered Traditionally Wings for appetizer, the Bacon Cheese Burger, and the Worcestershire Burger. Everything came out together. When our waitress placed out appetizer down, I mentioned that those were boneless wings; her response, "That's all we have now." Ok, well that's not what we ordered and why wouldn't she mention that when she knew or found out they were out of Traditional Wings. I didn't want to be difficult so we didn't return it. We each took a bite and that's pretty much it. We really couldn't enjoy it bc that's not what we ordered. Moving on to the burgers, it is the whole reason why we were there. Brick City Grill On a cold winter's night with flurries blowing in the wind, I walked into Brick City Grill. Met with the sights and sounds of a typical college town bar and grill, I took a seat at the bar as there were few other seats to be had. A very good sign on hump day with lots of other eateries for people to choose from. For a starter, I chose the fried Wisconsin cheese balls, recommended by the bartender. These perfectly fried dairy delights were served with a dipping sauce that tasted equal parts ranch and tarter sauce. It actually worked - and worked quite well. The main event was the Brick City Double. Two patties, 4 slices of American cheese and 4 bacon strips with the burger topping in at 14 ounces - What's not to like? To up the awesomeness quotient, I substituted one of the patties for a 60/40 patty: 60% beef and 40% ground bacon. Wise decision or a fool's choice? I was about to find out. I am not a burger cutter. I usually heft it up in my two mitts and insert it into the lower third of my face. Tonight was different for two reasons: 1) It was too darn hot to try to consume without cutting and 2) I was curious to see if a 60/40 patty looked different from its all-beef counterpart (it did not). After bisecting the 14 ounce beast, I took a bite, then another and then another. My taste buds were desperately searching for something unique and extra bacony. I'm not quite sure what I expected, but I didn't find it. Was it a good burger? Indeed - very good! Was it the pork-lined path to culinary Mecca? Alas, no. Maybe it was the non-bacon patty in was sharing a bun with. I just don't know. But the crinkle cut fries? Amazing. While my expectations weren't met, I left deeply satisfied.
