If you are looking for a lunch time spot with an overwhelming amount of options, you might want to head somewhere else. If you want thoughtfully prepared, grilled sandwiches that you don't just see on every menu across town, Brick and Tin might be your new favorite lunch spot. Some of the other sandwiches I wanted to try aren't on their current menu (seems like they might change it up frequently), but I ended up going with the brisket panini. The brisket is a tender, and falls apart easily, and the white barbeque sauce is almost too rich for a lunch meal. The mushroom soup is buttery, and made me want to perfect my own recipe for home. I spent around $23 for two people, for 2 sandwiches, 2 cups of soup, and two sodas. This is the place to go for a hearty lunch, after which you won't need to be rolled out the door. I went for a later lunch, around 1:20, and I was out of there by around 1:50. Locals are probably aware of this, but parking is tricky -- best to go down 2nd or 3rd avenue and find a 2hour metered spot if you are just going to be in and out. I loved this little soup-and-sandwich shop for its interesting menu and reasonably healthy choices. It was a great local choice for us travelers that gave us a chance to walk around downtown a bit. Warning: There are two places in Birmingham with "214 20th St. N." addresses -- be sure you're going downtown, not into a residential area! Parking wasn't easy to find but don't be afraid of the parking meters -- it cost us only a quarter for an hour. It's named "Brick and Tin" for its sparse decor which I would describe as rustic, not exactly comfortable. But who needs cushy chairs for lunch? The seasonal offerings on this day were wonderful -- butternut squash soup (a real keeper!), cauliflower soup and couscous salad with roasted squash. My husband also had a New Orleans sandwich he enjoyed but he would have liked for it to be bigger. The food was tasty all the way around, and the website says it's locally sourced. This place is an awesome lunch spot. There's only one thing I take more seriously than Hot Dogs, and that is the MUFFALETTA. People that know me know that I am serious about muffalettas. I lived on the gulf coast for four years. They do muffalettas well down there. Here in Birmingham any sandwich poser with olive salad thinks it's a muffaletta. A muffaletta needs 3 things: 1: Muffaletta bread. Don't serve that sandwich on a sub roll and call it a muff. 2: Capicola, salami, and mortadella (sopressetta works too). Don't put ham and pepperoni on a sandwich and have the nerve to call it a muffaletta. 3. Olive salad. That said, guess what? Brick and Tin does not have a muffaletta. They respect the muffaletta and call their's the "New Orleans" Because they serve it on foccacia bread. It is THE most delicious take on a muffaletta in Birmingham. My only complaint is I have to ask for extra olive salad because they go so light on it. Their Butternut Squash soup is also THE best I have ever had. We have eaten there many times and enjoyed it. We ordered pick up for the first time and both dishes were subpar. I had the summer salad and my husband had the pasta. These two dishes totaled $42.00. I was shocked that the pasta without any protein was $22.00 and heirloom tomatoes with blacked eyed peas and corn was $20.00. I'm in the general area for business, and I stopped here for lunch on my way up to Cullman. It was a gorgeous day, with clear and sunny skies and a high around 80. Everybody was out for lunch today. I tried to go to what I thought was an Italian joint but turned out to be an Italian-style pizza joint and had to make a game time decision, as I can't eat dairy. Brick and Tin it was. The place was packed. I hung out for a minute, made my way up to the register and ordered a simple salad with grilled chicken and some bread. I love bread with my salads. Now, there were about 5 tables that had finished eating and were just sitting, gabbing away while a crowd of folks waited to get a seat. I guess Birmingham didn't get the memo that during lunch, it's polite to leave shortly after finishing eating, because other people want to sit down and eat too. One of the bussers ever so kindly fashioned a make shift bar seat for me, and I was able to sit down and enjoy my meal: mesclun greens with peppered grilled chicken and sliced focaccia bread. The salad certainly was simple and it hit the spot for a healthy light lunch. It would have been perfect if the dressing had more flavor, but was still good. Popular soup/sandwich/salad joint with surprisingly few vegetarian options Ambience/Service: Everyone at the downtown location is super nice and friendly. Since this is mainly a lunch place, it's busy and staff seem to move fairly efficiently. Nice downtown feel with brick walls, high ceilings, and a decent number of tables although the times I've been here it's usually full or near full. Be ready for a line, although things move reasonably quickly. Food (I'm vegetarian): I've had two of their soups (potato and cheese and split pea I think) and two of their sandwiches (heirloom tomato and farmhouse). The soups are well-made and have a really great texture. The key is in the fresh ingredients and patience to make these but fairly standard soups. The sandwiches are also fresh but about 1/3 the serving size I might need. The heirloom sandwich had really beautiful tomatoes used that seemed straight off the vine but it was pretty much flanked with thin wheat toast and that was it. Maybe a sauce but not much else. The same was true for the farmhouse sandwich. Fresh ingredients but incredibly small portions. I'm sure there are plenty of vegetarians who choose to be so for calorie counting reasons. I'm not one of them. Ingredient quality=3.5 stars, Meal=2 stars. Overall: I can't speak to the meaty options at the restaurant. My suspicion is that they are both heartier and likely well-executed. After a few tries as a vegetarian, however, I don't think I'll be back. read more

My first time in Birmingham, AL. Brick and TIn was a nice find. I like the ambiance - a cool mix of utilitarian and artsy. Loved the ceiling. I dont know what the building was before, but it was left untouched - a bit rusty with some traces of paint. The three stars are for the food. Maybe my choice of sandwich wasn't the best (something with Italian salamis and olives..) but I thought it was a bit greasy. The summer salad which came as a side, was more a winter salad, as it contained 90% black eyed peas.. and 10% tomatoes, cucumbers. And the list of ingredients listed the peas at the end, leading you to believe that they are sprinkled only.. So a bit disappointed .. But loved downtown Birmingham! Very nice little street with wide sidewalks and coffeeshops, restaurants .. a delight to walk around. read more

Saw this place on Yelp and decided to stop in. Amazing atmosphere and decor, staff was very friendly and helpful. I got the Pulled Pork Shoulder Sandwich with a side of tomato soup and my boyfriend had the Florentine Sandwich with the simple side salad. Both sandwiches were great, super flavorful and nice bread. On our cross-country road trip we managed to stumble into the most New England-y restaurant: a locale priding itself on its use of grass-fed meats and locally-sourced produce. We came in the mid-afternoon and the place wasn't busy, but there was a steady stream of patrons picking up to-go orders or sitting alone to eat. The food came out fast and portion sizes were reasonable. I got the New Orleans sandwich with a cucumber-tomato-corn salad and my partner got a veggie sandwich with their simple salad. Both tasted great. Nice atmosphere in the middle of a weekday afternoon. Quiet, conversational. The decor is cool contemporary with a green bent: high ceilings, exposed brick, reused church pews, and interesting lighting. Nice, clean bathrooms. The space has a very cool atmosphere - it's rustic and modern with the exposed brick and seating. We got there early but the lunch crowd started pouring in soon after. You order at the counter in the back. I got the Tuscan - mushroom, fontina (cheese) and arugula with a side of butternut squash soup. The bread is delicious however the panini could use a bit of sauce - something to add more flavor. To be the only veg panini offered, it needs to be really tasty! The soup was very flavorful and exactly what was needed on a cool fall day. My friend ordered the Brisket (beef, carmelized onions, white bbq sauce) and tore it up so it had to have been good! We've been trying to visit this place for a few months! It was well worth the wait. I got the arugula salad which was loaded with a variety of veggies that I don't normally put on my salad. The salad was outstanding. My wife got the portobello mushroom panini which was delicioso also. We couldn't leave without trying the sweet potato bread pudding and it was outstanding!!! I had heard so much about brick & tin and really wanted to love it. However, I got the brisket panini and it was decent, but nothing to write home about. The meat was tender but a little dry-- a little more sauce would've made it perfect. I loved the side salad and the balsamic vinaigrette though, yum! When you walk in, there is a stack of menus on a table. You bring one up with you to the cashier to reference when you make your order. This eliminates the need for squinting at a blackboard like I usually do--for this, I am grateful. The atmosphere is pleasant and I love the décor-- especially the exposed red brick and peace lilies. They also have outdoor seating! I hope that when I return, I'll have better luck with different items on the menu. read more

A cool place in the heart of downtown Birmingham. For about twelve bucks, you can get a panini, a side of soup or salad, and a drink. The atmosphere is fun, and the fresh basked bread is delicious. A line develops right before noon, and seating can be a challenge. By one the lunch rush is long gone. If you have the opportunity, go after one when it slows down and you don't feel rushed. The brisket panini and the butternut squash soup are excellent. The chocolate bread pudding is a nice extra, but a bit pricey at $5 for a lunch dessert. The staff are rushed to prepare and bring out the food during lunch, as they are targeting the business community who are also rushed. This means that you will need to be prepared to hunt down your own napkins at times and not expect any extra small talk that can be a nicety of southern restaurants. read more

Go early! This place is FULL by 11:30 AM with the lunch crowd. The Brick & Tin is a wonderful place for a great sandwich and yummy salad. I always have the New Orleans sandwich, which has mortadella, salami, and other delicious cold cuts whose names I can't remember right now. The bread is a soft and rather light ciabatta and, instead of mayo or mustard, is accompanied by a spread of chopped olives. I can get my olive-y, salty, fatty, bread-y fix all at one time! I prefer to have the classic salad as a side; it comes tossed in buttermilk ranch, which isn't a favorite if mine, but for some reason I can't get enough of it at this place. I've heard the soups are great too but can't verify that since I'm just not really a soup girl... If you're ever in Birmingham, go here for lunch one day, you won't be disappointed - but remember to get there early! read more

I had the brisket with the seasonal side of couscous and my wife had the spring salad and broccoli soup. Everything was fantastic - we did not leave a crumb or stray leaf on the plate. While the brisket was amazing I will be trying something different on the next visit but only because everything looks so tasty. And if you're in the mood for a salad - the spring salad was fantastic. Parking was slightly difficult, had to circle a couple times but it's a minor convenience for the delicious food. Surely you've had this turkey reuben before: greasy bread, soggy after a minute because it's loaded up with Thousand Island dressing, sauerkraut all over the place. Well this isn't that reuben. It's perfection. All the elements are there, and it tastes great. The clincher? Somehow the sandwich stays warm and perfect from the first bite to the last. No messy dripping, no soggy bread coming apart. That warm rye swirl bread feels dense. Exquisite. I had eaten at this restaurant years ago in Mountain brook village and thought I would try it again. Just sub par food. I also ordered a side salad.. Brick and Tin is open for dinner on Friday nights. We walked over from our loft at Dog Days of Birmingham and had a wonderful dinner! I had the snapper that that was cooked just right and my husband had the Cajin Paninni with mushroom soup that was out of this world. The wine was excellent.
