My husband and I enlisted David and Rolan to facilitate searching for a house to buy while simultaneously putting our condo on the market. From the first meeting with them, as they assessed our home, throughly and patiently answered our barrage of questions, and clearly laid out the process of both buying and selling, we knew we had chosen the right team to guide and support us through the process. Rolan and David accompanied us to open houses and were our first line of defense against some sleazy sellers' agents--asking questions about the houses that we wouldn't have thought to ask, and warning us against potentially troublesome homes while also finding us several homes we loved. They went to bat for us in difficult negotiations for a house that we didn't ultimately win our bid on, were along for the ride lending encouragement while our mortgage lender tormented us for months on end, and then went through hell and high water to negotiate a reasonable price for the house we ended up buying. At the same time, they quickly found a buyer for our condo-- through their thorough advertising and outreach, as well as recommending an accurate and competitive listing price. We ended up selling for a profit which enabled us to renovate the new home. My experience with a Brick & Mortar agent, Moin Siddiqui, was the worst I've had after living in New York for 9 years in 6 different apartments. I scheduled a viewing for an apartment at 6pm and showed up at 5:55pm. He arrived late, which is not unusual-- in fact I've come to expect it when apartment hunting in NYC. His excuse? Someone who's application had fallen through was berating him over the phone. I laughed it off assuming it was the fault of some weirdo applicant. When the viewing wrapped up, and we were discussing what the next steps would be, he said he'd text me a link to the application, and that as soon as I'd completed it we'd move forward. Well the issues began when I got home about 20 minutes later and opened up the website. I completed the tenant application no problem, but when it came to the guarantor form I ran into some obstacles. Mainly, I was unable to send a direct link to my guarantor (who lives in another state), because when she would open it, there appeared an error message. It seemed to me like a classic example of a new company trying to use technology to gain an edge on the competition and make a tedious process more streamlined, but in doing so inadvertently making it more complex. Since I couldn't locate a "share" button or anything similar, I contacted Moin to see if there was another way. To be clear, I sent him a photo of the issue on my computer screen, accompanied by a detailed description. His response? First, he sends me a direct link to the guarantor form, which gives me the same error message my guarantor received. Next, he basically tells me to just figure it out. I ask if he has a normal PDF version of the form, or anything that would be able to received by e-mail. He proposes that my guarantor send her sensitive personal information directly to his e-mail address. Obviously this was not an acceptable option. I don't hear from him until the next day when he graciously reminds me that I have not completed my guarantor form. I respond by again inquiring as to whether or not he can provide the document in some other form, as I have exhausted my options using his company's website. No response. The following day I get another friendly reminder that I haven't completed my application and that he will move on to other applicants if he does not receive my documents by the end of the day. I responded by telling him what I thought of his professionalism and asking yet again, whether he could provide a more conventional application form. Finally, after two full days of suspense, I received my answer: "No." read more

From the moment I walked in I knew this was a different kind of Real Estate experience. I've been in too many real estate offices where they look disorganized (and they are.) This place is nice. It's clean. It's organized. It seems like that's how they run their business too. They offered me an awesome cup of coffee (it was cold out.) And they shared with me their insight. Although I wasn't 'really' in the market. They took the time to give me the lay of the land. Their agent walked me down the street to a great bar and chatted with me about what I was looking for and how they might be able to help. They discussed schools, streets and even some of the 'hidden gems' I'd get to know if I lived in Williamsburg. It's refreshing to find staff that looks as organized and focused as their office space. I had such a seamless and wonderful experience with Inga at B&M. I am in London, and contacted Brick and Mortar to rent out my apartment in Brooklyn - emailed on a Monday. Inga responded immediately, and throughout the week we worked out details, B&M took some amazing photos, and Inga scheduled showings for the weekend. Then by the next Monday (literally ONE WEEK), Inga had found a fantastic pair of tenants. Should also add that I am working in London, was on holiday in Croatia with minimal internet access, and Inga coordinated the entire process back in New York. I couldn't believe how easy it was. The rest of the process of sending in the applications and signing rental agreements was no less efficient and professional, Inga was always very prompt with following up. There was a slight problem with clearing the rent check the first time round, but B&M next-day mailed me a replacement check to London and sorted the issues. Would highly recommend B&M! read more

To be honest, I was wary of contacting anyone at Brick & Mortar. That's a fancy website, you know? And my boyfriend and I (and our p-e-t-s) were working on a decidedly non-fancy budget. BUT. After being ignored/rejected/shrugged at by about a dozen other brokers, I wrote Mark Fraser. And Mark is awesome. He got back to me almost immediately and sent us great listings. I fell in love with the first place he showed us, then steeled myself for the horrors of the application process...but no! No horrors! There was a lot of paperwork and we had a lot of questions, all of which he answered quickly and without making us feel like dummies. And he got in touch after the signing to let us know about some great businesses opening near our new apartment. Overall a great experience, and I truly appreciate that although we certainly couldn't have been his wealthiest clients, he treated us like we might have been. Worth noting: although Brick & Mortar does a fair amount of business in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, Mark is born/bred Bed-Stuy and has a line on some great places in that neighborhood.
