Had to refill some pipe tobacco so I went back, greeted as I walked in and employee was very attentive. He recommended The Accountant and Matured Virginia which smell and taste fantastic. Picked up some cigars for Thanksgiving as well, I asked for recommendation and Since I was going to be sipping bourbon he took me right to the box. Before leaving I picked up a pipe for gift ( Christmas) and I was out the door. One stop shopping. I'll be going back. Wow. A great shop. Went in here to swap out a pipe lighter for a friend. Ended up with a handful of cigars. First off, the shop has that great tobacco shop smell. You know what I'm talking about. Just can't describe. I'm not a pipe smoker, but they seem to have a huge selection of pipes and tobacco. But I was drawn into the walk-in humidor. Nice big selection but not so big it was overwhelming. The shop Mgr was inside stocking and asked if he could help. I told him what I normally smoke and I asked for some similar recommendations. He pointed me towards 4 choices I've never tired. And a sampler of my usual. He was great help and seemed very knowledgeable. I usually shop for cigars at Specs as they have what I like and with a good price, it was nice to go into The Briar and see how a cigar shop should be. The have a nice seating area inside, as well as outside to try out your new purchase. But time didn't allow that. Certainly will be back when I can as I live a good ways away. But worth the trip. Went to the shop on 11/18/23. What an enormous disappointment!! The humidor had about five boxes of no name cigars. The young man that came in was apologizing for the lack of selection and said we will be back better than ever. I asked what the problem was and he said we are working on it and will back better than ever and thats what the owner is telling me. Looking around they had no domestic tobacco at all and limited pipe. It had the look of a store going out of business or a store not paying bills so suppliers have cut them off. Nothing like it has been for many years so sad. Dont know what the problem is but as a two-three box per month high end cigar smoker I wont be back. read more

So, not only am I an amazing friend, daughter, yelper, et al., but I'm a pretty damn good sister. Due to some scholastic studies, Sister No. 3 didn't have time to do her Father's Day shopping for her hubs; I offered my "personal shopper" services since I was already in The Village. The Briar Shoppe was perfect since - according to my sister - a pipe has been on my bro-in-law's wish list (which I found pretty odd since I've never once seen him smoke anything except for brisket. I digress...). To The Briare Shoppe I went, and I am so glad I did. I'm not in anyway familiar with tobacco. I mean, I enjoy a good cigar every now and then, but I've never had to buy my own. They're usually handed over to me. (It's great being a girl, ain't it?) So, naturally, I didn't know where to begin. Fortunately for me, as soon as I walked in, Ashley, a female employee, greeted me with a hello and helped me with my shopping. I told her my price range, and I thought that'd be enough; but Ashley did her best to try to find a good selection of pipes for my bro. "What are his interests? How tall is he? What will he be doing as he smokes? What's his ethnicity? How old is he?" ...Well, "he's an ultra-conservative R-wing Catholic marine war vet; 30-years-old; likes poker, UT football and Mexican soccer; and there's no way in hell his wife is gonna let him smoke in the house, so he'll probably be reading outside while he lights up." With that bit of info, she was able to pull aside a great selection of pipes and even gave me a quick sesh about the differences. She also set me up with all the tools needed to get him started, along with a great tobacco to break in the pip, and didn't try to sell me anything unnecessary. I could have spent more time browsing ... Cigar mags, an interesting selection of tobacco flavors, cigars, and even had an ongoing wine tasting. Best of all? I saved 20% of my entire purchase because of a sale (going on through part of June). This is such a great little shop, and they can certainly count on my repeated business. It is a great place to enjoy a cigar and make new friends while watching tv and relaxing. I think the reviews are based off what you are looking for. If it's for cigars I wouldn't highly recommend this place but there's still a decent selection, a bit pricier but nothing terrible. However if you are coming for pipes I don't think you'll find anywhere better. The selection of pipes is amazing and their house blends of pipe tobacco is plentiful. Multiple brands, styles, and materials of pipes and pipe accessories. The staff is very helpful, I've mostly been taken care of by Tanner and James, both of which are very friendly. Not only that but very outgoing and willing to not only help me purchase my first pipe, but also teach me how to smoke, clean, what the different tobaccos are, what affects the price, and the sorta basic pipe 101 course. I wish I could say I won't go anywhere else for my pipes and cigars but unfortunately with school I have to go elsewhere. But so long as I am in Houston and when I come back to Houston this will be my shop for sure read more

The Negative: chairs are rough to sit in & parking is now by the meter or free along the street so it can take time to find a free slot to park. The SHOP Oh Boy, I remember it from when I was young down town and it moved and here it's in the Village for quite some time. FANTASTIC Selection of CIGARS & PIPES. Cigar humidor is packed full of all kinds of goodies from economical to high end and the draw and burn are usually perfect with their sticks. It's a little small in size, but truly has more than the first glance tells you. They also have a good value bin too for those on a real price hunt. Pipes, well this is the one and only shop left in town and it's by far one of the largest I've been for carrying pipes. Pipe Tobacco have a plethora of bulk and tins with something for just about anyone - They even sell samples. The staff are pleasant to deal with and try to serve everyone I've seen them come into contact with. They do serve first come so if you're in a rush and seconds count and they are packed, it could take a little while getting checked out... it's not a stop-n-go. read more

Love this spot. I always go here to buy cigars as gifts for the men in my life. I do the best recon I can to find out any preferences and then I go into the shop and someone always hooks me up. They lay out all the options and are very helpful in explaining the differences. This is very appreciated for a cigar novice like myself. Austin is a practical encyclopedia of knowledge on the subject of Dunhill's. I always feel welcomed with open arms when I come in to the shop. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I decided to buy a pipe and after some searching made my way down to the Briar Shoppe. I'm glad I did. The staff was extremely helpful, instructing me on the finer points of pipe smoking. Their pipe tobacco selection is very large. Ultimately, they threw in a free bag of tobacco for me and gave me a wonderful cigar box in which to store my purchases. I haven't had a chance to examine the cigar selection but it looks quite good. Way overpriced and staffed by some really pretentious cigar snobs. You would have to be a fool to stock up your humidors from this place. They don't even have a cigar lounge in this place. Not only do they have a sketchy selection , but the prices for the sticks they do sell are obscene. While I do occasionally like to get an occasional stogie from brick and mortar establishments, I believe this is the worst cigar shop I have ever visited, not only because of their pathetic selection and ripoff prices, but the staff that works here is rude and intent on selling you their own stock and pretty ignorant of anything they don't stock. read more

10 stars if possible. Despite living back in Austin for the past 13+ years I call this my shoppe... This has been my go-to place since my best friend and I first went to learn more about cigars. This was in the early 90's and before the boom when they were a lot cheaper. One of the sisters (owners) took us into the humidor and gave us a quick introduction. She gave us lots of valuable tips and pointers that shortened my learning curve. I always receive great service when I visit the Briar Shoppe. All of my pipes and tobacco were bought here. There are a few places here in Austin that I have bought some tobacco but usually I wait until my next trip back to Houston to swing by the Briar. Those places here in Austin just don't measure up to the Briar Shoppe. Do yourself a favor and visit Briar Shoppe. I stopped in here as part based on a google review to pick up a few new cigars. I am very new to the hobby so I was hoping to get some guidance and guidance did I get. I was greeted by a younger woman behind the counter who was helping a customer and let me know she would be right with me. In the meantime, I helped myself to the humidor to begin the adventure, within 5 minutes the OWNER was in there with me picking over a very nice selection and teaching me what probably would have taken me weeks to learn on my own. 4 new cigars and a few accessories and I was on my way. I didn't have the great experience that some fellow yelpers did. I have visited dozens of cigar shops and know what I like and don't like. I don't like unsolicited information about cigars and I don't like pushy sales people. If I want to know about a particular cigar, I will ask, I don't really care if YOU like it. Maybe I was PMSing, maybe I was irked by having to drive around the block 3 times to find a parking space, but I found the questioning intrusive and they assumed I knew nothing about cigars. Anyway - they have a walk in humidor and it doesn't have the huge selection I would have expected. They have the typical popular brands and lots of wasted space. The sales floor has a few leather couches/chairs in front of the store so people can walk by and watch you smoke your cigar. The wine selection is interesting. They have a New Mexico wine that I didn't know you could get this far east. Their pipe selection is huge and they have jars set up full of loose tobacco. I am not impressed enough to go back, and their prices are higher than other shops in the area that don't need the extra "pe" at the end of their name. read more

Best all around tobacco shop in Houston! 3rd generation owners; this is a family business!

This has to be one of, if not the best tobacco shop in the whole state of Texas. I know those are big words, but seriously, it's worth fighting for a parking spot to get here (especially with the annoying new parking meters). Their cigar selection is great, despite the humidor being barely big enough to walk around in, and they always have a great selection of pipe tobacco for sale. Every employee is great to talk to, and is always helpful, whether you're an experienced smoker, or just trying cigars and/or pipes out for the first time. Ross & Austin are the go-to guys for pipe knowledge, and Sandra & Joseph (when he's in town) know their stuff when it comes to cigars. The owners, Bill & Diane, are friendly and inviting, and make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in. There's almost always a group of guys coming in from time to time, and its definitely a fun place to hang out and kill some time. They also often have events from different tobacco companies, so signing up to be on their mailing list is a good idea to find out when those happen! If you're in Rice Village, and you need to scratch that nicotine itch, you won't find a place better than The Briar Shoppe.
