I'm a very low maintenance when it comes to my hair. Ryan has cut my hair the last three times since 2021. He's super friendly and very quick. He also styles my hair at the end which is nice. My hair colorist even commented once asking who cuts my hair because she liked Ryan's work. I find his price very reasonable at $60 + tip for my long hair with layers. The salon is located amongst multiple other studios inside Sola Salon. I used to find the space a bit cramped especially when all three stylists were working on clients but it seems they remodeled recently to be a bit more spacious which is appreciated. I'd recommend Ryan if you're looking for a haircut. read more

As Lunar New Year approaches, I had to get my pre new year trim. Thanks to Yelp I found Brian Guy Studio 14 nearby and was able to schedule a same day appointment. They are a small business located in the Sola Salons. With small businesses I always like to confirm which forms of payment they take and they accept both credit card and cash. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived for my appointment and the staff was Vietnamese too. They knew exactly what I meant when I said I needed my pre new year trim! Also, while I was there another customer came in for their pre new year trim also. It's a big thing! So I got a Bang Trim and Conditioning Treatment so my hair can have that extra healthy shine ringing in the festive Lunar New Year. I am pretty particular with my bangs but I was in good hands with Brian. He executed my side swept bangs flawlessly and in general I can tell he has a really good eye for hair styles. Afterwards we went to the hair wash station and another auntie lady shampooed and massaged my hair. Then the conditioning treatment was applied and I sat under the salon hair dryer machine to let the treatment soak into my hair. While I was hanging out everyone from the staff was super friendly and hilarious. I observed Brian with his other customers too and he is definitely a sweet talker but very personable. If you like great haircuts and sweet talk; this place is for you! I'm feeling cute and ready for my Lunar New Year festivities. Thank you Brian and the team for the good laughs and positive vibes. This was my first time getting my hair cut and colored in many years. I came in with virgin hair and like most people, wanted something that either wasn't attainable or if it was done, would have caused pretty bad damage to my hair. I booked an appointment with Ana- she was an amazing stylist to work with!! She gave me a quick consult at the beginning and she told me what she was able to do and what she COULD do but didn't recommend due to the damage, upkeep, pricing, and time. She was super great to work with and was very transparent through the whole initial consult. Ana works FAST and she does wonders to your hair. I am so glad I trusted her professional judgment - she recommended more natural highlights which turned out better than I ever expected. I think I liked her result more than what I was initially going for! I love love love her work - not only color but cut, also! She is very keen and listens to client preferences and just a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended and beautiful work. I came to see Ana a few weeks ago and she did an amazing job on my hair! I came in for a balayage with virgin black hair and showed her a few reference pictures. I specifically mentioned that I wanted it to be as low maintenence and as natural as possible so that I could gradually ease myself into lighter hair. She was very patient and did such a great job! My highlights are very natural looking and I've gotten quite a few compliments already. Her prices are reasonable and the entire process took about 2 hours. I will definitely be back to see Ana in the future (and might actually try for blonde next time)! read more

On a 1-10 Scale: Hairstyle = 10 | Service = 10 | Ambience = 5 | Value = 10 In Ten Words: Go here if you care more about hair than ambience. Notes: 1) The salon is a small suite in the corner of a building full of different salons. Look for the "SOLA SALONS" building located on the CVS pharmacy side of the large plaza (not the 99 Ranch side). There is plenty of free parking in front of the salon. HAIRSTYLE: I showed my stylist, Ana, a few photos of the hairstyle I wanted, and she was very knowledgeable and credible. I explained to her that I am very low maintenance with my hair, that I had increased greying hair that I wanted to conceal "naturally", and to do something about my grown out balayage. She gave me valuable input as to whether my hair would look good in the styles I showed her, and she was not pushy or opinionated about what style I should go with. I appreciated very much her judgment about what color and process would work for me, paying particular care to the long-term health of my hair. SERVICE: Ana was friendly, efficient, clean, and attentive with my hair. My scalp tends to be sensitive and it usually stings when dyes/bleached are applied, but I do not recall any/much discomfort during the semi-perm coloring process. AMBIANCE: This is not the kind of salon that would photograph well on Instagram. There is no vase of fresh flowers or other elements of nice decor. You will not be offered mimosas during your service or get any other "red carpet" treatment. Having said that, the salon is not filthy or anything like that; it's just not fancy schmancy. VALUE: I go to the hairstylist to get my hair cut and/or colored by someone who listens, who is knowledgeable, and who cares. I don't care if the salon is pretty; I just need it to be clean. I got everything I wanted during my visit with Ana, and her pricing was reasonable for the results (see before and after photos). I highly recommend Ana for your hair color and haircutting needs! read more

I cut my own hair like 9-10 inches off after having some bad luck. In some cultures, women cut off their own hair to change their luck. It was short and crooked so I Yelped around to find out where I can get a decent haircut without breaking the bank and near where I live. Brian was very nice and he did a good job. Bryan is SOOO talented! I've never felt so confident in stylist before. I asked for long layers and face framing pieces. I love my hair long and am always worried that stylists will cut too short, but he gave me the best haircut I've ever had while keeping my length. My layers looking perfectly blended. After moving to Irvine earlier this year I've been on the hunt for a new hairdresser local to the area. I found Brian Guy Studio 14 here on Yelp with nothing but glowing reviews - I was a bit hesistant as I previously had been going to the same person for a decade before I moved. I booked an appt with Ana after seeing some sample pictures of clients here on yelp and could not be happier. She was so friendly and easy to work with - I showed her photos of what I wanted--something to add more dimension back into my naturally black hair but not too crazy as well as a layered cut. She was quick and efficient and I loved the homey vibe of the studio. It's located in a huge building in Culver Plaza with probably hundreds of other service studios inside. Look for studio 14 and prepare for the best hair service ever :) I cannot wait to get this touched up in a few months. Thank you so much Ana for an incredible job well done! I've been to Brian Guy Salon about five times over many years, but unfortunately, the service has really gone downhill. After reading all the glowing reviews and seeing the photos, I expected to leave with beautiful hair, but that hasn't been the case. Both Brian and his assistant are extremely rough. During my last visit, the assistant had no consideration over my comfort and was very and oddly rough. He cracked my neck while washing my hair and then aggressively whipped a brush through the tangles. Straight up whipped a brush at my hair. Zero respect to me, my hair, and his profession. Brian even had to tell the assistant to ease up, but he wasn't much better himself. Brian dug his fingers into my head in attempt to maneuver me around during the cut, instead of just a reasonable touch or using his words. It was frankly disrespectful. The haircuts are also incredibly fast--10 to 15 minutes--and I'm starting to think they're not thorough. In the past, I've left feeling indifferent, but this last time, I straight-up felt ugly and confused about how he let me leave the salon looking like that. I can't speak to his coloring skills since I've only had haircuts, but I wouldn't recommend Brian for anyone looking for a professional or polished experience. read more

I've been looking for a place to touch up my roots, I originally have dark brown hair and blonde highlights and it had grown out so much. I saw great reviews for Ana so decided to schedule an appointment with her and I am SO glad I did. She communicates very well with what you want and explains everything. I was confused on which color to get (blonde vs ashy blonde?) but she explained to me thoroughly so I could make a decision. She then blended my roots so well and there's no hint of any brassy hues which I was scared of. She made the entire appointment so comfortable and easy and she finished my hair very quickly but also very efficiently. I didn't get a haircut since I had gotten one recently, but I trust her with everything. The price was SO affordable too. Going to her every time now. There are before and after pics I included. Really pleased with my experience! The color in my hair turned out wayyyy better than my sample images and Ryan was totally patient and knowledgable. I went in for a consultation and made an appointment for the following weekend (recommended for those trying to achieve silver, blue, etc). Ryan worked on my hair for 5 HOURS on a Sunday and gave me beautiful silver underlights!! He would constantly check in during the bleaching process to make sure my hair was holding up to the chemicals. You can tell Ryan is really passionate about hair and he treats every client like a unique piece of art. I highly recommend this place if you have dark, stubborn Asian hair because they have hands-on experience and have successfully created trendy looks. read more

Clients should not leave feeling upset, uncomfortable, or regretful after paying over $300. I hope management takes feedback like this seriously and provides better training on communication, professionalism, and how to handle client concerns during a service. The salon itself is very small, and there really isn't a waiting area for family members. Since my daughter doesn't drive, I had to wait in my car and drive around the area while she was inside. It would be nice if they had a small space for parents or companions to wait. Unfortunately, the haircut was the biggest disappointment. I showed a reference photo, but the final result looked nothing like it. If the stylist wasn't comfortable doing that particular cut, I would have appreciated the honesty upfront. I would have gladly gone somewhere else rather than have a haircut that didn't turn out as requested. The front was noticeably uneven, the hair flared out in an odd way, and the bangs were poorly cut. I ended up having to fix the bangs myself at home. I paid $90 for the haircut, plus a $10 tip, for a total of $100. For that price, I expected much better. My advice would be that if a stylist isn't confident they can achieve a requested haircut, it's better to be honest from the beginning. Customers will appreciate that honesty much more than leaving with a haircut they're unhappy with.

On my second visit, though, I had a very uncomfortable experience. The technician kept telling me to be completely still, especially when I looked away briefly or made slight movements while I was trying to cooperate. Instead of calm guidance, she became visibly upset, and the tone of the "be still" reminders felt aggressive and repetitive. What made it worse was the physical handling. She repeatedly grabbed/touched my hands and arms to position me, and it felt forceful and uncomfortable rather than careful. I also had hygiene concerns. The table/workstation I was seated at appeared dirty, and a tool she used did not appear sealed when it was taken out. She said it was sterilized, but there were several sealed/packaged items visible nearby, and her explanation didn't match what I saw.
