My group of 5 ordered the fondue, brussel sprouts, half chicken, risotto, and pork belly special. All was amazing but the stand outs were the quality of the cheese in the fondue, the brussel sprouts were caramelized perfectly and the chicken was so juicy. Everything was SO flavorful! Very attentive service and a cool atmosphere. Highly recommend and will be back! read more

My husband and I dined here on Saturday evening for a rare date night (we are new parents). Cocktails and food were delicious! One small misstep in service occurred which is why BP gets four stars. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation at 8pm, so we checked in with the hostess and got a drink at the bar. We had a drink then ordered a second, checked the time and it was 8:20 and asked the bar tender if the hostess would come seat us or if we needed to check in again. He said she would come seat us. More time passed and we noticed other parties who came after us were being seated. My husband had to awkwardly ask the hostess as she passed by us if we were going to get seated. Then another employee brought us to our table. We ordered oysters, lamb neck and gnocchi that were superb! read more

We heard about this place's burger and house made bread, so decided to try it out for a date night. We are sometimes disappointed after trying restaurants in RVA while they are going through new-place hype, but this spot hit the mark. We had moules frites to start (only complaint would be the frites stacked on top of the mussels), which was top notch necessitating an order of the house sourdough for dipping. Husband had the burger. If you eat red meat, this is a must. I had the radicchio salad as a lighter, digestive follow up to the moules. We finished sharing the white chocolate semifreddo with carrot cake. Wow. Our sever (who appeared extremely happy to work here!) offered samples of the beer made with the same foundation as the bread and chocolates from the staff pastry chef. The wine and cocktail list begged me to return. This place was a real treat. Bravo! read more

I was really excited to try this restaurant as I had heard so many great things from friends and colleagues. I came with a group of 8 on a weeknight and found the place completely packed. The interior was simple, fresh and modern. The staff was very knowledgeable and very polite. Our drinks took quite a bit to come out but that was not a big deal as several had ordered specialty cocktails and we were wrapped up in great conversation anyways. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails who ordered one. Since we were with a big group of women of course we ordered the cheese cart to come over, this was by far my favorite part of the meal. The cheesemonger took his time explaining all the cheeses and helped us create a fabulous cheese plate. You don't want to skip the cheese cart! Next for the entree I ordered the rabbit as well as one other at the table. Now I have only had rabbit 2 other times in my life, and love it both of those times, but this time I struggled to get through it and ended up not finishing it. I found the meat to be tougher than the previous times I had had rabbit and over cooked. The person next to me agreed. The server not wanting us to go away unhappy offered to bring us something else but since everyone was close to done with their meals we said no thank you. Everyone else at our table enjoyed their dish that did not order the rabbit. I will definitely be back to give this place another try with a different dish or just to grab some cheese and wine. read more

This is probably the best meal I have had in the last year. Service was exceptional. Andreas was our waiter and he was wonderful and really helped us with making our decisions. Cannot say enough positive things about this restaurant. Will definitely be back soon. Oh, and the cheese!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Excellent atmosphere, wonderful staff and delicious food! Highly recommend the foie gras mousse and both our pasta dishes were perfect. I've never had white bolognese before and I loved it. Also the honey budino dessert is heaven. Grant was our water and he made the whole meal feel tailored to our tastes and was a delight. Will definitely be back!! read more

My birthday brunch today was fantastic! Great menu options for the group, delicious cocktails and coffee, and a beautiful and festive atmosphere. The food was killer, maybe the portions were a little on the small side, but I'm ok with that. I would definitely recommend for groups, there's a ton of space so the volume level is great for conversation. I haven't been for dinner yet, but look forward to trying for a fancy date night. read more

I was excited to visit Brenner Pass - long anticipating it's arrival into the Scott's Addition area. The experience was "ok" - especially in light of how expensive the experience is to dine there. I arrived at about 5:45pm on a Friday. They had no openings at all - just reservations (although I watched an empty table for two - the size of my party stay open during my entire visit). I was offered the communal table or the bar as an alternative (the bar was full). Our server was exceptional - the highlight of the entire visit. Friendly, smiling, happy, attentive, helpful. The rest of the experience was disappointing. The bread basket (VIENNOISSERIE) had several options - of which only one of the breads was really tasty - the others we left behind. The vegetarian options were very limited and the meal I had (STROZZAPRETTI) was good for about 2 bites. Then it was fairly bland and unexciting. It seems that the burger is the star on the menu (based on what I saw around me) but if you want a good burger, I think there are better, less expensive options. The desserts are interesting. A small, specialized eclair was tasty. We were told that the Souflee (DULCEY SOUFLEE) was rare and unique in Richmond (most likely true) but it was bland and unexciting as well. It's a VERY loud and lively place. I'm sure for those who are drawn to Scott's Addition, it's a welcome alternative. I don't think it's worth the hype at this point. read more

Great food and atmosphere. The chairs were especially comfy. I had the Pacherri Bolognese Bianco and the noodles were very tasty and the pork infused it even further. The giandduja tart dessert was a perfect way to finish the meal. read more

Great restaurant. Dinner was delicious. Industrial Scotts addition vibe, friendly staff. Started with the anchovies vigrette salad, and fondue fries. So good! Meatballs and polenta was tasty but maybe a touch more spice, and the rabbit was delicious. Dessert of chocolate ganache was great. Will be back to try more. read more

I probably won't go back to Brenner's Pass for food. The cocktail we had was good, and the atmosphere there is cool. Other than that, this restaurant disappointed me. We had a hard time finding something on the menu that appealed to us. We ended up eating many different dishes and nothing stood out to us. I felt like the flavor wasn't there with the croquettes, the escargot was over cooked, and my pasta dish was so plain and would have been better if it were served hotter than it was. My boyfriend's steak was undercooked, and already sliced, so putting it back on the flame would have been impossible. I didn't have confidence in this restaurant to order dessert. That is how bad I thought this restaurant was. Service was attempted, but at this price point, I was disappointed. read more

Enjoyable experience for the first time and learned they do Chairlift Series tasting menu which is a great addition to offerings. Very modern hip atmosphere with utilization of heirloom and rare ingredient pairings for the true foodie. This is a great spot in the ever growing saturated area of the city with options. Portions a little smaller than expected but full flavor combinations. read more

Went on NYE. They had a pre fixe menu. The drinks were impeccable. The food was well rounded and beautiful. One of the best meals of 2017.

Incredible food, great atmosphere and decor. A little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for!

Great food! Great service! Great atmosphere!!! Honestly i can not safe enough great things about this place! We visited the week it opened and as expected everything was fantastic! I wish this was in the neighborhood when we lived in Scott's Addition but I ma happy to see GOOD food arriving in this neighborhood! Excited and looking forward to going back many times! read more

Definitely lived up to the hype and expectations! My friend and I shared the burrata, beets and apples, burger, and arctic char. I was impressed with both small plates- the burrata was simple and fresh and the beets were perfectly combined with apples and hazelnuts. The arctic char was good, but my friend and I were both happy we split it. Just in comparison to everything else, it was...meh. Then the burger. THE burger. Now, we weren't happy we split that. It was definitely our favorite thing we ordered. The patty (ground brisket and short rib) was full of flavor and perfectly cooked to medium rare. I was so impressed by the well-paired toppings- crispy speck (it was easier to bite than bacon), frisee (it held up to the heat and melty cheese); then the FONDUE (the reason why I ordered the burger in the first place). The wine list had great options that were reasonably priced. I definitely plan to go back and get the burger and wine/cocktail on a regular basis. read more

Me and my wife took our 5 month old to a very early dinner one Friday night. Everything was great from the service, drinks and food. We shared a salad and two entrees and were happy with the food at the time. But about 5 - 6 hours later our stomachs did not agree and we were both fighting for the toilet and trashcan to throw up from both ends. Given we shared everything and it was the only meal we shared that day and last thing we had eaten, we and the doctor chalked it up to food poisoning. We skipped my family holiday event the next day and stayed home to rest up all day. We called the next night to let them know "hey, your food made us really sick...can you look into it so it doesn't happen to anyone else and see what you can do for us?" A follow up phone call never came and we called back a few nights later to an impolite and unthougthful manager who basically told us there was "nothing they can do" and "we checked and we don't think it was our food but it could have been the radicchio salad". He proceeded to explain if we didn't like the food we could have gotten a refund but they can't just give refunds to everyone who gets sick eating there. Which we asked "how many people call back saying they threw up all night?" This manager failed at the most basic elements of any business in customer service: the service part. This is not in the realm of possibilities moving forward when me and my wife have the ultimate weekly debate "where do we eat tonight?" and it shouldn't be in yours. read more

A thoughtful and considerate approach to drinks was and is always appreciated. Excitement abounds when the kitchen door swings open.

This place is very sleek, open and contemporary on the inside with a nice sized outdoor eating space as well. It's definitely a place for foodies because it's sort of assumed that you'll be familiar with the menu items and their descriptions. Our waitress was extremely enthusiastic about everything on the menu and also quite eloquent in her explanations but telling us things had an herbaceous quality for example didn't always help us know what we were getting!! The cocktails my husband and son ordered were very smooth and good, and my wine was delicious. The fondu frites were a phenomenal play on a poutine with fries covered in a light cheese fondu sauce with something similar to bacon pieces and pearl onions. The cheese sauce wasn't thick and dense and the fries didn't get lost - it was filling but not too filling and one of the highlights of our meal! I think it's one of their signature small plates and I understand why! Definitely worth trying. If I go back, I would probably get that and have drinks and I'd be very satisfied! The tuna carpaccio was good; we just didn't know what to expect with that small plate special. After two appetizers, we decided to split the fondu burger (another signature dish) and the mushroom risotto. The fondu burger was off the chain amazing! Big bun, good meat, bacon and that same fondu cheese sauce from the frites! Lip smacking yummy. The mushroom risotto was a disappointment though. The mushrooms and the risotto lacked flavor and the risotto lacked the density you usually associate with a risotto dish. It was enhanced by the egg that was served on top and mixed into the dish to add more texture but it still paled in comparison to the fries and burger! Great service and some real food highs, a mushroom risotto low and a real need to up my "foodie vocab" so I can better maneuver the menu next time!!! read more

I have been at this restaurant at least three times and each time, I've been somewhat disappointed either in staff, or food availability, or the food itself. Being a recent transfer from New York to Richmond after 30 plus years, I was pleasantly surprised to have this restaurant here, but when you arrive and no hostess, and you make a simple request at lunch or brunch to have 2 eggs, Chef, note to self, always have a simple omelette or egg dish on hand for brunch or lunch, otherwise you have failed in your mission to elevate your restaurant to the most basic obligations, and instruct your staff to be accommodating and efficient and do NOT serve old coffee. The beauty of the restaurant belies the product advertised. I don't believe I'll be back, or bring my guests from New York either. read more

I could not agree more with several of these reviews saying this restaurant's atmosphere is pretentious and the menu is overpriced. We love the Metzger Bar & Butchery and were hoping to also love this restaurant but sadly we were very disappointed with our experience in large part due to the customer service provided by the Maitre D. Every 10 weeks my team members fly into town. I made a Monday night reservation for 12 people three days in advance. We showed up the standard 15 minutes prior to our reservation time. I asked the Maitre D if it would be possible to add an additional chair to our table and she said they normally don't do that but that she would check with the manager. I waited for 15 minutes with the extra member of our party, standing by the Maitre D table, while everyone else sat at the reserved table. The Maitre D never left her podium to speak to a manager even though I was standing right there waiting for her. It was a Monday night and no one had walked into the restaurant after our group entered. It was extremely awkward. It was like she was too good, or the restaurant was too good for her to even check with the manager to see if they could seat 1 more person at our table. I literally had to turn away a member of our group even though there was space at our table and extra chairs everywhere around the restaurant. This was the worst feeling ever. After dinner when everyone in my party had stepped outside, I hung back to ask the same Maitre D a question. Why weren't we able to add a chair to our table? She said, "there were no chairs available". I pointed to a room behind her that remained empty the entire night with dozens of chairs and asked why couldn't we have used one of those chairs? She said "those chairs belong to those tables". I responded but that entire room was unused this evening. She immediately changed direction and said "it's more of a space issue". I said there was plenty of space to add an extra chair at our table. And at that point I realized the truth which was they didn't wan't the restaurant to feel overcrowded even though there is an enormous amount of unused space everywhere. That is the 'vibe' of their restaurant and it wasn't worth adding 1 chair to our table if that meant it could ruin their vibe. Turning away a customer, more specifically turning away someone who was there to enjoy a meal with their friends and colleagues was not just okay, but the only option given to me by this Maitre D and restaurant. The last thing I said to the Maitre D was a clarification, "so just to make sure I understand, you had the chairs available, and we had the space at our table, but you turned away one person from our party because of a policy that your restaurant has?" She said yes. read more

My hubby took me to Brenner Pass for my recent birthday. We had heard good things, and it definitely lived up to our expectations! We enjoyed craft cocktails, beer, and wine, as well a a charcuterie board with delicious cheese, meat, and spreads. We also got the fondue frites to start, which weren't our favorite part of the meal, but still good. Our entries were some of the best food we've had in RVA. Hubby got the steak and it was tender, cooked perfectly, and so flavorful. It also came with layered potatoes and bacon as a side. I ordered the mushroom risotto which was creamy, buttery, and flavorful, with plenty of maitake mushrooms. Delicious. For dessert we had the marjolaine which came with delectable chocolate ganache and gold flakes and made me feel like I was eating something cooked up on the Great British Baking Show. Aside from the A+ food, the service was also great. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and very down-to-earth, which isn't always the case in upscale restaurants. The decor was also really pleasant--modern yet Old World. They definitely succeeded in invoking the Alpine region for which the restaurant is named. read more

Can I give 6 stars? Brenner Pass may have served up the best restaurant experience I've had all year. That may not mean much in January, but it's late December and this place blows the doors off your culinary expectations. My trio had the duck, steak au poivre, and wild boar shank. This place May specialize in several things, but what is obvious to all of us is that they are artists with meat entres- tender fall-off-the-bone goodness. To start, we had the incredible pork belly special that is soaked for 24 hours in advance in something that made it taste like a dream. Dessert for us was gianduja tart-a chocolate ganache wonder. Beer selection is modest in number but still excellent in variety. Staff kindly accommodated a special request, specially creating whipped cream in the back for a high maintenance friend who needed it in an already off-menu Irish coffee. Ambiance is modern yet warm, stylish, but not rubbing your nose in it. Really friendly vibe and I'd say excellent for a date or a group outing. A gem of a place! read more

Wow, what an experience! Where do I even start!? My dad and I are avid foodies, and love checking out various different spots in RVA. Brenner Pass definitely is now in my top 10. The menu, food, ambiance- all incredible. Our WAITER (God, I'm shooting myself in the foot right now for not being able to recall his name as I write this) really was the one who tied the whole experience together for us. He clearly enjoyed what he does and took pride in his work! He told us all about the cheeses (my goodness do they have a marvelous selection) and his favorites. I told him I trusted him to choose 3 cheeses and 2 charcuterie for our cheese board- he did not disappoint AT ALL. It was one of the best cheese boards I've ever had- and I've had many. We also enjoyed the Oeufs Mayonnaise (and added the trout roe, as recommended by our waiter of course), beef tartare, and Judy's chicken. My, what a meal! It really makes a difference when your waiter adds such good energy to your dining experience. He recommended we return for brunch, and I can't wait to be back! read more

The portion size was so small my date had to take me to Bakers Crust immediately afterwards! I ordered the lobster tortellini and no joke it literally was 5 small tortellini that had a tiny amount of lobster tucked in it. To add insult, it was a $20 entree. Give me a a full portion and charge more if they must but for gosh sake, don't let me leave a restaurant hungry. RICHMOND HAS SO MANY EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS ONE! read more

My family and I had high expectations after hearing such great things about Brenner Pass, but we left very disappointed. Two things were good here: service and the fondue. Everything else was way too heavily seasoned and extremely salty. We ordered the cavatelli, which tasted like an entire bottle of paprika had been dumped on it, the gnocchi, which tasted like rotten red peppers, and the steak, which had good flavor but was extremely salty and mostly fatty pieces. Drinks were bitter and not very good. If you're looking for a great dining experience in Richmond, we have so many better places that I encourage you to check out. read more

Having heard great things about Brenner Pass, my boyfriend and I chose to celebrate my 25th birthday there. We started off with some cocktails and the Malakoff appetizer, which were all delicious and made us that more excited for our main dishes! I decided to order the Cavatelli (pasta dish) and he ordered the burger, both of which came out looking great. It wasn't until I had a bite of my dish that I realized I had accidentally ordered pasta with a pork-based sauce (I'm vegetarian and granted this was my fault for not asking about vegetarian dishes or specifics about the listed ingredients). After explaining my mixup and apologizing, the waiter seemed to be (somewhat) understanding and suggested to swap the meal out with their polenta. Though it came out pretty quickly, in all honesty, the polenta mixed with beets, corn, and mushrooms generated an straight-from-the-farm smell. It was a little tough to get through the dish with this smell and the odd variety of textures too, but maybe this is me not having as refined a taste as their intended audience? After we finished up, we received the check and to our surprise, the pasta dish was still included. We ended up paying for it since it was technically my fault for ordering it in the first place, but still I thought this was a little unfair since I had one bite of the dish and the waiter had taken it back. I want to premise this that my boyfriend and I have both been servers in the past too and know these sorts of things happen at restaurants, but were a little disappointed that the meal was not even offered to be comped. If we had known that we would have been charged, I would have kept the dish for my boyfriend to finish. I do want to say though my boyfriend enjoyed his meal and especially the fact that they had specifically brewed house beer from the Veil. We would like to give Brenner Pass another chance in the future, since the cocktails were good and their cheese plates/fondues do look really appetizing. However, our overall experience dampened a birthday dinner I was really looking forward to. read more

6 months later, still not exciting. Drinks and appetizers remain the selling point, though the fondue was mediocre and a way overpriced. Brenner Pass has a wonderful atmosphere with delicious small plates and great service. Our server, Grant, knew everything about the menu and gave recommendations that were tailored to us. Drink- wise, I recommend the Sherry Cobbler and Snow bunny. They are light, refreshing, and not too sweet. Food-wise, the Cacio e pepe was to die for, with a bit of a kick from the pepper. The beef carpaccio was also delicious, as was the Arctic char. Thank you Grant and Brenner Pass for your wonderful service and delicious flavors! read more

Overall a very good meal. The special appetizer was great and we really liked the corn risotto as a starter. I read the Richmond magazine and once I saw the article about the burger from here I knew I had to go. As someone who usually judges people who go to nice restaurants and order burgers, this is my one exception. FOR YOUR OWN GOOD ORDER THE BURGER!! It's not your classic burger, the owner does an amazing job and created a patty of short rib and brisket and pairs with with thick cut crispy bacon, frisée, and the house fondue all between two toasted buns. We came here and sat at the bar and split the burger and fries with a few drinks before going to other breweries in the area. The service was great even though the bar area was packed. We didn't stop talking about our visit for.... well we're still talking about it! After our dinner we promptly made reservations to return again next month and we can't wait for our next experience with them! read more

This was my first visit to Brenner Pass. The staff was very friendly and helpful! My friend and I shared a really good bottle of red wine. For dinner I ordered a chicken breast served with a crispy terrine. Both tasted mainly like salt. The menu mentioned asparagus with my dish, but it must have been part of the terrine and therefore disguised in salt. My friend (who had been there a few times) ordered the Fondue Burger. He'd had it twice before, and said it's his favorite thing on the menu. That surprised me given his typical orders at other restaurants. Ironically, when I saw the restaurant featured on the front page of Style Weekly, I assumed it was a gourmet burger place, so perhaps I'll try BP again and have a burger. read more

My best friend and our significant others all met up to get one drink the other night. One drink turned into multiple bottles and hours. The staff was very accommodating even though our outward appearance isn't the norm there. The charcuterie boards were well made, my favorite piece being the foie gras mousse. Since I don't drink alcohol I drank Coca-Cola which is from glass bottles (aka Mexican/Jew Coke) not the gun which for me just makes everything slightly better with real cane sugar and not HFCS. To top the night off we were comped a dish because "we like how y'all are drinking". I can't wait to go back for dinner and give an updated review. read more
