Really fun escape room. They have 4-5 rooms. Medium to low level of technology for the rooms. We went with 2 groups and each played a room... then we switched rooms and raced to see who could finish. Both teams loved both rooms. The puzzles were challenging enough that it kept up entertained. They weren't so difficult that it was overly frustrating. Been back a couple times. Breakout Waikīkī is an escape room located a bit further away from the main beach and a of Waikiki beach, and down the street from those who've been to 88 Tees. It's in a bit of a random spot off the street, and really can't see it from the outside until you walk in a bit to see the entrance area, which is a small area. Staff here were friendly, and also helpful in helping us with the escape during, especially since this was a family event with a younger kid, they probably felt bad for us, and we were not doing great overall, lol. Definitely exceeded that 3 hint limit! The room we did was the Y2K one, which was certainly a fun blast from the past room. For those who were 90s kids or fondly remember the 90s, this will definitely be your jam. The room itself was wide ranging of difficulty, while I wouldn't recommend for beginners, it's certainly got a good balance between difficult puzzles and easier ones. The room is also good for kids. Nothing jumpy with it that happens with this one, though, they might miss a lot of the references. But hey, if you're bringing your kids here you can tell them all about the things in there, "Back in my day...", and remind yourself how old you are! We had a work teambuilding event held at breakout Waikiki. We got our reservations ahead of time because we had 10 people and had to split into two different rooms. Thankfully, there was two rooms with the same difficulty level at the same time for us to do our teambuilding together. We did the patient 57 from and we're not able to break out in time. But we were so close. It was really fun and challenging for us at least. Definitely recommend this if you have a small workgroup or even something fun to do with friends. Parking is great because they validate at the Embassy suites for four hours at a rate of eight dollars which is valet parking. But as we were getting our cars, the valet service said there's promotion for the beach walk and it's tenants where you get free valet parking from 10 to 3 so we lucked out. Not sure how long that goes for but definitely check ahead of time because it made all of our parking practically free except for the tip you gave the valet driver. There are also many restaurants and eateries that you can walk to in the area to catch a quick lunch before heading home. read more

I am always a huge fan of escape rooms and this one was located super close to the hotel I was staying at. Initially, I only planned for one room but we had so much fun that we decided to do a second one the next day. I won't go fully into detail of what occurred in the rooms, but I will say that both had unique applications in what you had to do. The Hero was a bit easier for my group compared to Secret Sabotage. I will say that be very aware of your surroundings and just enjoy yourself. Our Game Masters were very kind and only gave us hints either when we absolutely needed it, or when we had all the pieces and just got stuck in applying which ones to where. Overall, my party had a great time and would love to do the other rooms whenever we go back here some time again. read more

I decided to go check out my first escape room. I got lost going across the street. I'm not sure how. So I called and Devin was great help. He even came outside to meet me. So I knew where to go. We went here for my nephew's 10th birthday, so our kids and he can have a great adventure together. The escape room itself, Secret Sabotage, was a great room for them and had many ways to keep our problem-solving skills sharp. That room was so fun, highly recommend it! Unfortunately, our host wasn't the nicest person. I forgot her name. She's younger with black hair and on the slim side. She didn't seem to want to be there and wasn't very welcoming or present. What got me the most was when my youngest (nine years old who loves to carry her baby doll with her everywhere she goes), entered the Secret Sabotage room she asked the host if it's okay to bring her baby doll in. Her sarcastic response (to a nine-year-old) was, "Well, she's in here..." followed by a direct stare and pause/shoulder shrug. I was in shock at how rude she was to a child. I hope that's not normal for the host and she was having a difficult day, but that's not a great way to speak to a child learning to grow her social skills or build her confidence. While on vacation in Hawaii, we stayed at the Hale Koa and my brother and his gf always like to find escape rooms. This location was walking distance from our hotel and walking distance to a lot of the shops. It was fairly easy to find. My brother made a reservation online and when we got there I think only the hardest level was available. It was pretty good for a group of 4 but unfortunately we didn't make it out. It was easy to fill out the waiver online and we got to keep our stuff in our room and didn't have to worry about lockers or anything. If you are old enough to have a teenager that wants to do an escape room, let me warn you: it's dark, everything is hard to read/see so you need to bring your reading glasses or magnifying glass. Second. They gave us only one little flashlight that was on its last battery juice. I would've preferred a 5000 lumen flashlight that worked. Luckily we had 2 teenagers with us that could see. However, we did need the old people as well, because everyone's brain thinks differently and it took all of us to find clues to help us finish. Rooms (ranked): - Y2K: Okay so this was our favorite room out of the bunch since it was 90's themed and the nuances of the 90's were everrrrrywhere. There were a lotttt of puzzles in the room and mostly lock&key type which makes it a bit more retro. But overall if you were fully conscious and lived through the 90's (and maybe enjoyed 90's music?) you'll enjoy this room! Difficulty a solid 7/10. Our team of two escaped with 3:30 minutes remaining. - ARMORY AMBUSH: Second favorite room. The puzzles are smart, great quality overall...and SOME PUZZLES SUCKKKKKED for two people... but overall the theming is consistent. I normally dont like old western themed rooms but this wasn't giving horrible headaches. Loved their use of the space and unique ways to get puzzles solved. This was definitely a bit harder for two people so it's a solid 8/10 difficulty. We got out with 0.5 seconds to spare LOL. **some parts of this room is a bit dim lighting** - PATIENT 57: Third favorite room. This room was haarrrrddddd for two people. Soo many puzzles to complete and some translating to do which is NOT fun when you're stressed out. Also wasnt a smart idea to do this room after Armory Ambush - brain was fried. There's so many technical pieces, and no-fun things to try and solve. At least it was QUITE a challenge for us two...but didnt leave us feeling all that great since it did take a beating on our psyche. Solid 8.5/10 difficulty for us. We honestly shouldnt have escaped this room, but we did! - THE HERO. Forth favorite room. This is a bit easier of a room but it's also not one I was fond of. Unique puzzles BUT they honestly didnt fit well together. Felt like a hodgepodge of things to do and I wasnt sold with the themeing. There was a room reset malfunction which wasnt a big deal. I liked the thought put into this room but I wish there was an overall better flow. 6/10 difficulty. We escaped with 8 minutes to spare. **We chose not to do Mission Manoa as several staff impressions gave us that it's not the best room and quite a challenge for two people. Secret Sabotage was also not played b/c it was probably too easy for us** I have to say, their room quality is pretty awesome. They use their space well. Alex was our game master for Armory and Patient and he was the most enthusiastic and helpful host. Props to you, sir! Pros: - Great quality rooms in Waikiki! Great presentation and themeing. - Decent price! When you return the same day for another room they'll also give you 20% off - just ask. - Helpful staff when calling in. They always pick up their phones. - Private rooms! - Pretty easy access if you're staying local to Waikiki. - Clean bathrooms - They can accomodate your schedule if no one else is signed up for your game. Cons: - No free parking. You'll need to get validated for valet parking ($8? for 4 hours?). You can also try and find cheap spots! This was my first ever escape room experience and we failed...but it was still kinda fun. First off, the room we did was one of the hardest (Patient 57). We only had 5 people, 4 of which it was our first time trying this kind of thing. We didn't even make it half way through and the host showed us the ones that we didn't get to and it was soooo hard; we never would have made it! Was it fun? Yes. Would I go again? Maybe. It was a bit expensive, even with the kamaaina discount. The parking is free valet but if you go to Long's and buy something you can get parking for up to 3 hours for $1 an hour or go to Royal Hawaiian Center and get free parking up to 3 hours with your Hawaii ID at the Helumoa Hale and a receipt of $10 spend (I go to ABC store or Cheesecake Factory). read more

I had done almost all the rooms at Breakout Waikiki at their old location when I was still relatively new to escape rooms. Since then, I have done a ton of escape rooms across the country and upon returning to Breakout and doing Patient 57, I feel like it leaves much to be desired. Parking is $6 + valet tip at Embassy Suites, and the Breakout validation gives you 4 hours of parking. Regarding gameplay for Patient 57, I thought there were more tasks on average than other escape rooms I have done. My main issue with this room is that there is no logical connection between what clues unlock which locks. It is also linear, which I do not think should be the case if you have more than 4 people in the room and a ton of tasks to do. For this particular game, I was annoyed with Hannah, the clue master, for two clues. For the first situation, we had the right combination, but we were not putting it into the right lock. The clue given was about how to get the combination, so we assumed we had the combination wrong. Then, Hannah gave a second clue about the first three numbers in the combination (again, we already had them). After about 10 minutes, the clue was to look for another lock. The same thing happened for a second puzzle where the clues given were explaining how to do the puzzle when we needed to look for the input. This was such a waste of time, and I do not think hints should be taken away for puzzles that are solved independently. My final issue was with staff enthusiasm. Everyone from check-in to check-out seemed miserable to be employed there. I also do not like red herrings (which this room has), but I know other people enjoy them. At the end of the day, the puzzles at Breakout are fun and challenging, so I do not think they are the worst out there. However, I think there can be improvements in room sequencing that make more logical sense. read more

So not going to lie, but I am not the greatest at these escape room games lol. My friends love it though!! This is my second time doing the Breakout Waikiki. They changed locations and now are next to Giovanni's in Waikiki. You can park at the Embassy Suites with validation ($6). They only allow 8 to a room and we had 5 couples so we thought it would be fun to split up and do boys vs girls. The girls and I did the Secret Escape and made it out within seconds to spare lol! Not sure how the boys got out before us but the main thing is we both escaped lol. This is a fun activity to do with friends and something different! Even kids can do it (older kids) but I did think it was pretty challenging. They do give you clues throughout the game if you get stuck.. thankfully! Also it does feel a little claustrophobic in there so if you don't like small spaces this might not be for you. The staff here are also super nice and friendly. This was my 19th escape room and a group of 6 of us did the Patient 57 room! We booked easily online 2 days before and chose the $30 public option which means other people can book your room too (I find people rarely do this). We walked to the venue from our hotel in Waikiki and our other team members found street parking or validated parking at Embassy Suites nearby (parking info on the website in the FAQ section). Their reception area has a couple benches. It has AC which is a must in Hawaii! Also there are statistics on who made the board for each room. Checking in and the intro to it room was great. Friendly, informative, and efficient. The room itself was challenging with a ton of puzzles both old school and tech based! We escaped with around 2 minutes left which is the closest time I've ever had! It was a lot of fun and had so many things to solve that everyone in our group had a chance to help solve at least a few each. It definitely took a lot of teamwork so u would say a group of 4-6 is probably best. Our group had myself who did the most rooms at 19, my husband and his friend who did 9-15, my cousin who did 3, and my cousin and her boyfriend who had never done an escape room before! They did just as well as those of us who were more experienced so it was a great first room for them! Everything was well thought out. There was a story that connected everything nicely. The rooms were propped and themed authentically enough to feed the fantasy. Breakout Hawaii is located in the kings court in waikiki (Till the end of January then moving) we parked at the International market place (validation $6 with a minimum $10 purchase at the market for 4 hours) and walked over (5 min walk). The main or check in room is on the bottom floor (There are 2nd story rooms too). The staff was very professional..accomodating..and friendly. Breakout Waikiki was located right beneath our hotel, and the trip's birthday boy was so excited! We've been wanting to do an escape room since before the pandemic, so having it beneath our hotel was so serendipitous! There are multiple rooms with their own themes and unique clues to each mission. I won't give away too much - but we chose to do the army theme (the most difficult as stated by the staff) and patient 57 (which was medium). Only the birthday boy had done an escape room - the other three of us were acquainted with the idea, but not aware of how difficult they could be! I figured it would be more entertaining, but had too much confidence we would break out! Our game master was pretty helpful, but I think our second one was a bit more frequent in helping us as needed. We loved our first escape room so much, we ended up returning the next day! It was such an amazing bonding experience, and it got everyone involved too. Although, the second room got us more competitive! We definitely had the escape room bug, and there was no stopping us. The first room we finished 80% and the second we finished 90%! Definitely helped to get used to how to navigate them! This location was really easy to book online or in person, and you're likely to get an appointment next day , and if not - the wait period in between isn't bad at all! They have multiple time slots to fit any schedule. Be mindful, these are an hour maximum - even if you're close to finishing! This was thrilling and also sad because we wanted to see how far we could've gone (unofficially)! They said you could have 8 participants maximum in the room - and depending on the day of the week, you may have to pay for 4 participants even if you had just 2 or 3 due to the demand. We did our first one with 4 people, and honestly - when we returned with 5 it was MUCH easier! 4 was good but there are some tasks that need more hands, eyes, ears, and generally everyone is able to participate somehow! Even if you feel lost, I promise you, you are so important to the game! Ultimately: Remember to have fun, enjoy, and be in the moment. When we arrived at our reservation time, was told an adult had to be in the room with them and had to pay to watch them play. If I had know this I would not had signed the two kids up. So I've done about 30+ rooms at this point, and Armory Ambush was the first room we ever failed. I wouldn't be frustrated with failing a room if it was due to extra challenging puzzles, but we got stuck on a puzzle that was not remotely intuitive (if anything, it goes against what you may presume from having done prior escape rooms), and admitedly our GM even said he got stuck on the same puzzle, yet when we asked for hints for the specific puzzle in question (3 hints!!! For one puzzle!) we weren't given adequate information to help us figure it out. We're a smart bunch. We've done significantly more intense, logical games and have come out with time to spare, but with a game like this where the puzzles are a little all over the place, the hints aren't that useful, and they have a challenging puzzle that doesn't make sense, it's hard to give this room much credit. Additionally, there was another puzzle after that which is a little messy and makes solving it more confusing. I feel like there's a lot of room for improvement, but being from Los Angeles where you can throw a stone and hit about a dozen of top tier escape rooms, I've developed an expectation that the hints should be useful and the rooms should be cohesive. I'm speaking in vagueries so as to not give anything away, but all in all, I was unimpressed and actually quite disappointed with this game. read more

On their website, there was a discount that could be applied to our time. The worker told us that they couldn't control the website, remained dismissive, and failed to honor their own discount. The clues given were clear and succinct and the room itself was extremely clean and easy to maneuver in. So far, out of the 4 rooms, our team favorite was Patient 57 and our least favorite was Y2K. Overall, such a friendly and accommodating service. Sooooo fun!! We had both my kids birthday Breakout activity here with their friends. My son's in September with 7 friends. And then me daughters this February with her group of 7. The max is 8 people. Minimum is 2 - I believe. The entrance is on the opposite side of the parking. (I suck with directions- you will need to call them.) The walkthrough the parking area smells really bad- there are trash dumpsters there. The parking is very small and the ceiling is low- is an older building. I could touch the ceiling when I extended my arms in the air. They do validate for the first hour and after that parking is $6. I parked at the international market place and ate lunch there. Parking is nicer and not as tight. Ok but the rooms are fun! My kids and their friends had a blast each time. We definitely will try more rooms. Yes both groups broke out!! It's a must do. Such memories and you can see how people work together under stressful situations. It's worth the hour!! Do it!! read more

First time at this escape room, I've done Chambers and also Escape Challenge. Heard good things about this place from a friend. I've escaped all 7 that I was itching to escape another. My friends know me well, this Christmas I got a gift card they picked up at Costco for Breakout Waikiki. I think it was $80 for 4 people. I'm not sure if the value is enough for your own private room vs. public. I've only escaped with people I knew, not sure what the dynamics would be with people you don't know. But going with my mom who is a first timer, Plus going earlier because we had a plane to catch decided to go with a public room. The only one available for 4 was the Armory Arsenal. It's rated 8/10 hardest escape room they offered. I can't really talk details but all in all- public room wasn't bad, glad that we did because we all did our part to eacape with 28 seconds left. My mom had fun. At one point my boyfriend wanted to give up when there was 2 minutes left. It didn't matter though because the group that came with us kept in going and we were able to get that last piece to escape. Didn't ask about parking that's something you should research before going, hopefully there is validation. Oh-I did try calling twice and no one picked up. read more
