This is a perfect COVID activity! They really take care to limit the number of people in the common area at one time and I think all the games are private party. It's been a year since I left a review. Since then my family and I have gone back at least twice. The last two experiences have been great! The staff is friendly and helpful as well as very patient. Today, I booked a room that I thought we hadn't played before. When we were finally all there and went into the room, I realized my mistake. We had played that room before. The game masters were total cool about it. They allowed us to switch to a different game and were kind about it the whole time. Our game master, Isabella(?), was fantastic. She paid very close attention to make sure that when we interacted with a prop that the prop worked correctly. Glitches are an unavoidable element of escape rooms given the amount of people that go through there. So it is really important that game masters make sure you're not wasting your time when you already did what you were supposed to do but for all kinds of reasons, the prop doesn't respond correctly; and Isabella was on her toes the whole time. read more

Came as part of a team building event for work. Overall, it was a good time. Our game started about 15 minutes later than our reservation so that was a bit of a mark off of my rating. We did the Casino game and I thought it was pretty challenging. We did make it out with 13 seconds to spare. I really didn't think we would get out with about 4 minutes to go and seeing how many clues we still had to go. The game master was a big help but didn't really give away any of the clues. Just enough to get us looking in the right spots. We did waste a bit of time to start because we didn't really know what we were supposed to be looking for. Fun experience! I've been to this location a couple of times now and it always amazes me at the end to know that my group happened to solve all those puzzles! The location is a little tricky to find, but Google Maps has helped me get there. The staff have always been polite and friendly. It's a bit pricey ($24 a person) for what ends up being about a 45 minute experience (if you break out). I think it would be cool if they switched up the games every couple of months so I had motivation to go back. I think the staff should also be sure their props are sturdy/not worn out ahead of each round as we had difficulty with two clues on my last visit, but other than that, it's a cool way to do something different and work together with friends or family. read more

Escape/breakout rooms are all the rage these days, and I finally had the chance to check it out for our staff holiday party! It was difficult to find in the office park tucked behind Castleton - my GPS had no more directions for me but I was not there yet. Helpful hint: it faces I-69 so keep driving east. We filled out our waivers online beforehand so check-in was a breeze. We divided up into teams of 7-8 and each tackled a room, where we were given one hour to break out. Note: the door isn't actually locked, so if you need to leave for whatever reason, you are not trapped. We did "The Kidnapping" where you are blindfolded and handcuffed in the room. We had to solve multiple puzzles and put together lots of clues to finally exit the room. It was challenging and a team effort to complete! Much more intensive than I expected, but we managed to break out in 54 minutes and earned our "I broke out!" stickers and proudly posed for a photo. The other two teams from our office also broke out of their respective rooms, so it's possible! The "game master" sees and hears everything you do and can give you up to three hints, so long as everyone in your group agrees to use them. While it was a fun experience, I'd seek out a different escape room venue. 1) I don't go to Castleton often because it's crazy busy with traffic and 2) our group of 20 came right after lunch and all wanted to use the bathroom before we got started...which were single seaters, and they weren't very clean. The experience got better from there, but I would want to check out another place before coming back here. read more

I'm really torn between giving a three or four star review. Are you listening, Yelp? WE WANT HALF STARS!!! This was a really fun time and unlike anything I've ever done before. Imagine taking all the best parts of a board game, a mystery dinner (minus the food), and a team building exercise and putting them in one event. Eight of you are "locked" in a room with one hour to break out by solving clues. You have a game master who watches you from a closed circuit TV and will occasionally guide you along. You can also ask for up to three clues to help your team. If you go, here are a few tips that they unfortunately do not make clear on their website. First, and this is the most important one, you are not completely locked in. There is a button you can push to leave at any time and there is no penalty for leaving/returning. You can go to the bathroom, grab something from your car, no problem. I was fairly anxious before going because I was a little freaked out at being locked in. Next, you can take your purse or wallet in with you. They encourage leaving all your stuff behind but they don't really explain why, and at the venue they say we might be more comfortable leaving them behind because the rooms are small. But our room was about the size of a normal living room, so even with eight of us and props, there was more than enough room for personal belongings. Finally, since you have to reserve your spot ahead of time, they do not keep cash on the premises. We learned this the hard way when we tried to break a $20 to reimburse a friend who pre-paid for us. If a session was $10 or even $15, I would give it a five-star review. But admission is $24 and you are literally there an hour - it's a timed event and you have to leave when your hour is up. That's more than or comparable to the IRT, Indianapolis Zoo, and the Children's Museum, where you can have hours of fun. I just do not see why it has to be so expensive. We broke out! (In a good way) Last week, we booked the Museum Heist scenario which had our group breaking into the home of a famous art counterfeiter in order to steal an original and return it to the museum in under an hour. This multi-room, multi-player game was a blast! This is a family-friendly game, but it isn't kiddy stuff. We booked 9 slots (8 is the suggested max but we were allowed to add another) for our son's 21st birthday. The group ranged from 16 to 56 years old and everyone got into the mix! Three days later, we're still all talking about it... that's the sign of a fun party! Once you break into the house, clues and locked cabinets are everywhere and your group has to figure out what-goes-with-what. Many of the clues are very subtle. Be observant! A game host is monitoring your group, live on camera, to make sure no one's damaging the props or feeling claustrophobic. They really get into it. Your group can ask the host for a limited number of hints to make sure you're not totally off track. If you don't book the whole time slot, you might be playing the game with people you don't know. However this week, Groupon makes it easy and affordable to book the whole room for 40% off the individual ticket price. TIPS: Show up 30 minutes early to get your paperwork done and instructions. If you're late, they take that from your game time...and you want every second! Also, you can take your phone in, to use as a calculator or to Google an answer to something... but no pictures. You don't want to be bogged down with lots of stuff.. so lock your purse, bag, etc., in the trunk. Breakout Indianapolis offered a fun experience and good atmosphere compared to other escape rooms I have visited and other Breakout locations. I have previously struggled to find an escape room which is appropriate in difficulty for a smaller group of maybe four people or less. While I cannot speak for all of the rooms, the one we booked was certainly manageable for a smaller group. I also like that Breakout has decided to make its rooms private automatically upon booking. When you book a room at Breakout, you do not have to be worried about being paired up with strangers; the room is all yours. We tackled the Runaway Train room with a group of just two of us. Without giving any of the mystery away, we both agree that the room was a good size and difficulty level for two to four people (even though the maximum number of people allowed to book the room is much larger). This was my partner's first escape room experience, and I have been in several escape rooms before. The two of us are in our early 20's. We escaped with just about four minutes left on the clock. The room has a mystery/adventure feel to it and is not scary, so those who do not do well in horror movies but still appreciate an adrenaline rush would enjoy the Runaway Train. The clues are fairly linear, one of the reasons that having a smaller group for this room might be beneficial, at least in our opinions. However, just based on clue material and difficulty, I would recommend this room to older teens and adults. As someone who has been enjoying escape rooms for years, I am not sure if I would have enjoyed this particular adventure as much when I was just 13 or 14 years old. The room is well-decorated and immersive. There is a good mix of traditional clues and those which require interaction with technology. Our game master, Abby, was very enthusiastic and helpful. She provided us clues here and there when we needed them, and they were always able to set us back on the right track. She seemed knowledgeable about the room and engaged in encouraging us to escape. I would not be apprehensive about booking an escape room at Breakout Indianapolis again. read more

Wow.oh.wow. This place was so fun!!! I did the kidnapping room for my friends birthday last week and we had a blast! We didn't even breakout--if we had 2 more min, we would of killed it! Lol but it was still so much fun! First thing first, you must make a reservation before you go, so call ahead or go online to see if the time and day you want are available. There are multiple rooms you can choose from--you can watch intro videos about each room on their website! Once you have a reservation make sure you get there 15 min before! If someone in the group is late they will make you start without them. They are very busy and groups are back to back. Once you're team is there they lead you to the back and give you instructions about whatever room you are going into...then let the games begin! You only have 1 hour to breakout, so choose your team wisely! You can only have 8 people in a room at one time, I personally think you need about 5/6 people! This is a great place for families, friends, birthday, co-worker bonding, etc. We did battle of the sexes and had guys in one room and girls in another. This was SO. MUCH. FUN. Our family bought Groupons for one another for Christmas-without knowing it. Great minds think alike! Anyway, after coordinating schedules and working with the VERY flexible and friendly staff we were able to schedule the Christmas Caper last night. I really can't say too much about the experience, except that it was a blast. We had 30 minutes to solve our puzzle and it was more intense than I anticipated. Note that it didn't help that my father-in-law spent the last five minutes simply counting down so we knew how little time we had remaining. Luckily, we broke out with time to spare. There will be a person watching you on cameras that is also able to talk to you from a speaker. You are able to ask for three hints during the hour. After that, you can get another hint if you're really stumped, but they'll make your group dance or sing for it! At $25 per person, I'd say it was worth it. We had such a good time here last night. We came with a Groupon, celebrating my sister's birthday to the Casino breakout room. It was challenging and with 6 adults, we managed to break out with 22 seconds to spare on the clock. Really got the adrenaline pumping in the last half of the game! Our guide was named Justin (or Austin? I'm sorry, I'm really bad with names. Tall and thin younger white guy with short hair, said he had just come back to work after a hiatus.) was very friendly and kept the suspense up for us while giving us our helpful clues. The location was a little tricky to find as my Google Maps directed me smack dab in the middle of the corporate park. There's a sign that directs you to it once you get back there though, so no issues there. Overall we had a really good time and we would definitely return for another scenario. read more

The latest craze to hit Indianapolis are "breakout rooms". These are games where you are put into a live scenario and you need to uncover clues that will help break out out of whatever situation you decided to play. My visit to Breakout Indianapolis was seriously about as good as it gets. Let's start with the location. The location is hidden away in an industrial park area in Castleton sort of in the area of Twin Peaks. If you're driving south on 69 you can see it from the highway. As soon as I entered I was greeted by the friendliest of people. She checked us in, gave us some basic rules and then we waited for our scheduled time. (NOTE: Don't just show up! You need to reserve your spots ahead of time and be sure to arrive 15 minutes early for check-in). This time we decided to try the "Kidnapping" room. Without giving anything away, I will tell you that this room was phenomenal. The clues make you think. You need to be resourceful. You need to work closely with your group and plan your time appropriately so that you don't run out of time. You have one hour to solve the puzzle. Ultimately we did not solve the puzzle in time. If we had another 5 minutes we likely would have made it but...we failed. Let me tell you, nothing makes you want to come back like being minutes away from success! Here are a couple of tips: 1. Arrive Early 2. Wear comfortable clothing 3. Rooms hold 8 people (Not 100% sure if they are all rooms of 8) so if you don't have 8 people, you may be sharing your room with strangers. You can always but all 8 spots if you so desire. 4. These are classic puzzles. Everything you need is there so don't try to overthink things or get too creative. 5. Bring a cell phone. You may need the flashlight or the calculator! (Just sayin) These guys really do a phenomenal job so kudos to the entire staff of Breakout Indianapolis. Finding an activity that you haven't already done in Indiana can be difficult at best...especially one that everyone in your group will enjoy. Breakout is one of them. It's a super fun and exciting way to spend an hour of your time and test your puzzle solving skills. I had previously watched a game show of teams trying to breakout of a room and it was so cool that I figured a real life version would be a little dull and cheap compared to it but I was completely wrong. We played the Casino Royale room. We were told that only about 30% of the people who try actually figure out all the clues and escape but the record time was 34 minutes. They walked is into the room, gave us the rules and started a video that pulled you into the scenario and It Was ON! We completed clue after clue and made it out in 54:44. Nowhere near the record but we certainly got our hour worth of entertainment. At $25 a person, it can be a tad expensive but I also just saw a half price Groupon so grab some friends and check this out. If you don't try to Breakout, you are really missing out. Went to breakout with a staff of 17. Although the rooms have a capacity of 8, I asked the manager if we could put 8 in one room and 9 in the other. He didn't hesitate and was extremely accommodating. I've done something similar to this before, and I have to say that the work in putting these rooms together is on the next level. The creativity, the way the clues are revealed, etc...are next level. It's evident that the staff has put a lot of time into ensuring these rooms are well done. Yes, it's expensive. The good news is that you can sometimes find a Groupon, which drastically decreases the cost. This is an amazing experience, especially when trying to increase communication and/or teamwork among a group. read more

I have done a few escape rooms but this one was my least favorite experience. Not because of the room necessarily but more about how the hints were handled. Unfortunately I can't go into great detail as it would ruin the experience for others but I felt we wasted a lot of time because of confusion on how to implement a clue after our guide stopped us from using it even though it was right. This was in the train room. Needless to say we did not make it out which would be fine but we weren't even close because of how much time we wasted on not just that issue but other parts of the puzzle. In retrospect we should have asked for more hints sooner but I just wish the guide could see we were struggling and stepped in so we could at least have a chance. We were with two kids (9 & 13) and I think the Runaway Train room was more than we could handle. There was a lot of time where they were just waiting around and we were beyond frustrated trying to figure it out. Maybe it could have have gone a different way had we had more adults but they said this room would be okay with kids just that it had a lot of math. I would try the place again but likely will not. Personally have enjoyed the overall experience at the Escape Room much more. read more

Let me tell you they have thought of everything. You have to do some math, quick thinking, and definitely work as a team. You can have up to 8 people in your group and we were paired with three strangers but we quickly came together to solve all the puzzles. But you cannot leave the room until you actually breakout of it! Brilliantly orchestrated and a fair price for was you will encounter. The perfect answer for "what should we do this weekend?"
