Today I was at the Morningside Kingston location and it was busy. Friendly staff helped with a White Loaf and I just ate the Cheese Pullapart with my eyes this time! The young gentleman behind the counter was friendly and helpful. We sampled some Baps at dinner, slightly toasted in the toaster oven which was fluffy and light round of deliciousness and got two big thumbs up from my daughter. We couldn't resist sampling some scones after dinner and the double chocolate, cinnamon and blueberry were all very good. They were more chewy, bouncy kind as opposed to the more dry, crumbly version I've been used to. All in all, it was a great first experience at Cobs and we'll be back for those Baps and to try our their other offerings soon.

It's spacious and offers an okay range of UK goodies. I found the grocery selection to be not the best out there when it comes to the two aisles, but they offer the classics and goodies--a good range of sweets. They have a frozen section that offers frozen meat pies, bread and chips. The real standout here is the bakery, of course. The bakery is considerably big and stocked with all the classic make-you-feel-good home items. They have multiple types of meat pies however one of my favs is Steak & Guinness. The bakery offers pasties, scotch eggs and a good selection of cakes. The staff are always happy to help at the counter and enjoy sharing information about their cakes. I've been back a few times since it's opening and it is great when you want to quickly pop in and grab some basics and scoop some meat pies and sausage rolls.

Since the closure of But'n Ben Scottish bakery in Pickering, there hasn't been another bakery to get good meat pies from. This bakery replaced a Wimpy's diner and I was curious to see how they would manage such a large space for a bakery. The store is well laid out with fridges and freezers that line the store, jam packed with delicious oven ready meals and hard to find eats. There are also isles stocked with jams, coffee, tea, pot noodles, biscuits and snacks from the old country. And in-store baked breads are spread out on tables near the display cases. I picked up 6 assorted meat pies and some Queen Victoria's during this visit and shared them with my family. I don't often make meat pies anymore as the kid still has yet to develop the taste for it, but for the adults in the family, this was a lovely treat to pick up several different flavours to sample (chicken pot pie, steak and gravy, steak and mushroom). We enjoyed our selection of pies and the dessert and look forward to returning to try out more delicious eats!

I actually wanted to bake one, but my decorating skills are not that advanced! I was intrigued by the good reviews of Sugar Peony, and knowing chestnuts are a family favorite, I went with the 6" French Chestnut cake. I placed the order over the phone with Linda (48 hours is required) and she assured me it would be fresh. I purchased a Groupon for a 6" cake at $28.80 and redeemed it with no problems. It seems the majority of people use a Groupon to purchase the cakes or macarons. I personally could not see myself paying the regular price of $58 + tax, so it was a good deal. I arrived just when the boutique was opening at 12 noon and met with Linda. She explained how she used fresh chestnuts and I was quite surprised because the majority of cakes, even from high-end patisseries uses chestnut puree. Linda said the puree would make the cake too sweet, so I was excited to taste it! The cake was fresh, moist and decorated beautifully. We are not fans of super sweet desserts, so if you are looking for a cake that is very low on the sweetness scale, these types of cakes are perfect. While the chestnut flavor was not predominant, the caramel flavored Callebaut "crispearls" added a nice textural crunch. The other flavors of cakes may be interesting to try next time.

From the sign in large letters outside, to the displays of macaroons by the counter, to the brightly painted interior, it is literally like a shining beacon in the middle of nowhere. The owner herself is also such a lovely lady - I could tell by her patience when I was placing my order (telling me all about the cake flavours, the ingredients, when and how to pick up, etc.) how dedicated she is to what she does. And it clearly showed in the dessert itself. I first chanced upon this store on Yelp, which mentioned a Groupon that offered a heavily discounted price - so of course I had to look into it. Using that (about 50% off) coupon, I ordered a chocolate élysée cake for Mother's Day. The cake came out even more beautifully than I expected, and was an absolute delight to eat. The varying layers of chocolate - the slightly bitter frosting, the richly sweet inside, the chocolate pieces decorating the top and sides - all blended perfectly, as did the textures, smooth and velvety throughout until you get to the wonderfully crunchy bottom. It was a feast for our eyes, too, as my mom commented that it was almost a pity to cut the cake apart - and the packaging is probably one of the prettiest I've seen (or maybe I just like the pink colour. Lol). Why 4 stars (instead of 5)? Well, I did come here on a Groupon...and the original price of $58 for a 6 inch cake is just WAY too much. If ever I need a specialty cake for an occasion, though, this place is on my radar. :)
