Vegan Feijoada, Carrot Cake Cup, Passionfruit Juice
Dana S.

There's not many places for Brazilian food in Vancouver so I was curious about this place. When they first opened the selection of meals was pretty small and it was takeout only, but they have since expanded the menu to now include some vegetarian and vegan dishes, and they've added some in-store seating (limited to 30 minutes after receiving food). The store seating is not the most comfortable because it's kind of cramped, but it gets the job done for a place to quickly eat. I got the vegan feijoada, a carrot cake cup, and a fresh passionfruit juice. The feijoada was delicious with a different flavour from the usual vegan stews. I got the small size, which looked very small when they put it in front of me but after eating it I thought it was actually a good size if you're looking for something a little lighter; it was actually probably about the same portion I would make for myself if I was cooking at home. The carrot cake cup was also different - I honestly wouldn't have expected the carrot and chocolate to go together but I just love carrot cake so I wanted to give it a try, and I actually liked the pairing (which isn't surprising since chocolate is a normal accompaniment to Brazilian carrot cake, but it was new to me). I thought either the frosting was a little too sweet or there was too much of it. Not much to say about the passionfruit juice... other than it was nice to try it fresh. The staff was very friendly. They were patient with other customers who had questions and also patient with me while I decided what to order. My food was ready pretty quickly. It was overall a pleasant experience despite the awkwardness of the dining space.

Vegan feijoada

Having just got back from Brazil and having loved the vegan feijoadas down there, I decided to try theirs out. I ordered delivery through DoorDash, and my order was on my doorstep 40 mins later. They advertise their vegan feijoada as ($12), but that's for a small (300g) order; their large (600g) is $20, and is not really that large, as I needed a big snack a couple hours later. Regardless, the quality: the black bean stew was solid, nicely spiced, with some slices of vegan sausage, served on rice and sauteed kale, with toasted cassava flour (as per traditionally served) and salsa (not traditional). The depth of flavours in the stew were good, but shy of amazing -- it did not rival the ones we had in Brazil and left something to be desired. It is better than the vegan feijoada from Boteco (on Nanaimo) though. Overall, decent spot, just not great value for money.

My favourite is cheese ball and the steak with cassava. Truly authentic Brazilian cuisine. Don't forget to try their caipirinha, specially the passion fruit. It's tucked away on Nanaimo & East Broadway, not a super busy area, but we noticed lots of Brazilian guests dining here. That's always a good sign! What we ordered: * Picanha Verão - A special Brazilian sirloin cut, served with a light hearts of palm salad. We're usually not sirloin steak people, but this dish completely surprised us. Juicy, flavourful, and a must-order signature plate! * Bobó de Camarão - Shrimp in creamy coconut milk sauce with rice & salad. The sauce was rich and comforting, we couldn't stop spooning it over the rice. * Dados de Tapioca - Crispy fried tapioca cubes dipped in sweet pepper jelly. Sweet, savoury, and chewy! It was such a unique appetizer. * Bolinho de Bacalhau - Cod croquettes with a mashed potato inside dough. Golden and speical. * Pudim de Leite Moça - Condensed milk flan. Smooth, creamy, and absolutely heavenly. Another must order! * Brigadeiro - Chocolate truffle ball coated in sprinkles. A classic Brazilian sweet treat. * Beijinho - Sweet coconut ball, soft and chewy. We paired everything with a fruity Batida de Frutas (mango) and the classic Caipirinha. Perfect match for the food and patio vibes. Overall, a hidden gem that transports you to Brazil through food, music, and vibes. We'll definitely be back to explore more dishes! Food:  5/5 Must Try! Service: 5/5 Kids: 4/5 Yay! Price: $30-$40 each person (dinner) Presentation: 2/5 Parking:  Free street parking in the neighbourhood. The rib eye steak was cooked perfectly, the tiger prawns were fantastic, and the B+B House Brioche with Gruyère and sun-dried tomato butter was seriously next level. And I have to mention the French onion soup -- easily one of the best we've ever had! Drinks were equally impressive. We enjoyed a mojito and a Dirty Martini, and the wine selection was second to none. What really made the evening special was the exceptional service and atmosphere. The entire restaurant has a sophisticated, posh vibe, with luxury details everywhere you look. It feels like somewhere you go when you truly want to celebrate an occasion. They sell a bunch of Brazilian snacks but overall the inside of the store looked worn out. We came in on a Sunday morning and no one was at the front. I rang the bell and a young girl came to take our order. She was sweet but looked very stressed. She ran to the back and was on the phone with her boss frantically asking for help. She then came running out and told us it'll be a wait because she needs to get a big order out. I replied no problem and went to grab a seat. After awhile I rang the bell again and asked for a refund and said I would return another time. The girl said she could make the food now. The next few minutes all we heard was the microwave constantly going off and it was clear nothing was made fresh. Feijoada: apparently this is their most popular dish and I liked the vibrant colours. However the pork was overcooked and nothing tasted fresh except for the slice of orange. Strogonoff: the creamy sauce was not bad but it was so salty we were really thirsty after. The chicken was overcooked. Coxinha: I was excited to try tradition Brazilian croquettes but these were clearly frozen and again didn't taste fresh.

Feijoada was bursting with flavor, well-seasoned, and as a Brazilian I can honestly say it tasted…read morelike the real thing. Also tried the açaí and orange juice, both fresh and delicious. I looked up the business on the internet and search rendered a location in New Westminster. I kept that in mind so I could take my husband there next time we go to New West. My husband and I were wandering in the West End waiting for one of my favourite restaurant to open for lunch and stumbled upon their new location on Denman Street. I was so excited that we changed our lunch plans. We bought 3 pastels to share (beef, bacon & cheese, and cheese & guava jam) and had an impromptu picnic at a quiet spot in the Rhododendron Garden at Stanley Park not far away. It is, as others have said, a neighborhood grocery store / cafe that is unmistakably and authentically Portuguese. Its name, Cafe Algarve, refers to the beachy area in the south of Portugal. However, a poster map of Baixa Pombalina, the Baixa district of Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake under the direction of the Marques de Pombal, will be looking at you from the cash register. Locals coming from Portugal definitely frequent this business, close to the intersection of Broadway and Commercial Drive, and many speak in their native language. The owners and the patrons are very friendly. One should stop by to try a pastry and some coffee ... or tea. Also, if you've ever tried, and liked, Sumol, the Portuguese soft drink which comes in orange, pineapple, and passion fruit, you can buy it here. You can also buy other groceries. I recommend coming in the morning for the pastry and coffee. The pastries are pasteis de nata, the traditional Portuguese custard tarts "born" in Lisbon's Belem district, and it's impossible to eat just one. So, for an inexpensive pastry and coffee, meeting some nice folks from across the Atlantic, and doing something atypical while in Vancity, check this place out.
