Summer is almost over, so we decided to squeeze in one more patio dinner. Brazilian food turned out to be perfect for it. We saw Boteco Brasil's top reviews and had to check it out. It's tucked away on Nanaimo & East Broadway, not a super busy area, but we noticed lots of Brazilian guests dining here. That's always a good sign! What we ordered: * Picanha Verão - A special Brazilian sirloin cut, served with a light hearts of palm salad. We're usually not sirloin steak people, but this dish completely surprised us. Juicy, flavourful, and a must-order signature plate! * Bobó de Camarão - Shrimp in creamy coconut milk sauce with rice & salad. The sauce was rich and comforting, we couldn't stop spooning it over the rice. * Dados de Tapioca - Crispy fried tapioca cubes dipped in sweet pepper jelly. Sweet, savoury, and chewy! It was such a unique appetizer. * Bolinho de Bacalhau - Cod croquettes with a mashed potato inside dough. Golden and speical. * Pudim de Leite Moça - Condensed milk flan. Smooth, creamy, and absolutely heavenly. Another must order! * Brigadeiro - Chocolate truffle ball coated in sprinkles. A classic Brazilian sweet treat. * Beijinho - Sweet coconut ball, soft and chewy. We paired everything with a fruity Batida de Frutas (mango) and the classic Caipirinha. Tasty but expensive Brazilian place on Nanaimo near Broadway. According to my Brazilian friend the place isn't too authentic, but you be the judge. Parking is available on the side streets. The venue has a large covered E facing patio, which is great on summer days. There is also a crowded indoor dining area. The evening my buddy and I went, there was also live music. As of the time of writing, there is a $6 mandatory "cover charge" on these evenings. Something to keep in mind. Staff were friendly but service was slow. Mind you the place was pretty full. Caipirinha - buddy said he saw them using a mix instead of simply using raw ingredients (I couldn't see as I was facing away from the bar). The curious thing was that although I ordered a double, there was way more liquid in the glass than there should be in an "authentic" version. With that said, I actually can't complain, as I just thought of it as more drink. Mini coxinha - 10 tasty crispy chicken and potato croquette bites with aioli sauce (extra charge). Nice and tasty. Picanha - 8oz steak, seasoned Korsch (no idea what this means). The fatty edge was there. Steak was a wee bit tough, but no biggie. I had mine rare. Buddy had his steak medium rare, and said it was ridiculously tough compared to other places. I tried a piece and it was fine to me. Maybe I just have low standards. Served with farofa (cassava meal), brown beans, fries, rice, and salsa. Definitely a unique combo. The band was singing a mix of songs. Heads up - the songs aren't exactly Brazilian. Guantanamera is as Brazilian as a Cohiba, and they were also singing some songs in Spanish instead of Portuguese. With that said, I imagine the layman wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the vibe. Overall the experience was okay, but the steep pricing and slow service and mandatory music cover charge make me a bit hesitant to come back. But there aren't really many other options in town for the Brazilian experience. Maybe come try it once. read more

This was my first time trying Brazilian food so my friends and I were really excited! The server was very friendly and helpful as he gave us some recommendations from the menu. We were able to get a mix of the coxinha (chicken croquettes) and bolinha de queijo (cheese balls), which was nice as we didn't know the option was available (the menu serves each item in orders of 10 pieces but we were able to get 5 of each). Between the two, I liked the bolinha de queijo more; the cheese pull was insane and it's also seasoned with spices so it's extra flavorful. Since we went during happy hour, we got the calabresa, which was made up of sausages and kale, served with fries. For mains, we got the feijoada and picanha. The sizzling hot plate was a good choice to share but I found it a bit too salty. I liked that my friend could eat the steak medium rare and I left the steak on the hot plate longer for medium! We came on a Sunday for lunch. Not a lot of people so lots of places to sit. We ordered the coxinha, cod cake, Bobo shrimp, stroganoff, trinhas de carne (beef) and the pudding de leche. We've never had Brazilian food before so we didn't know what to expect. Amongst the fried items we had, we enjoyed the cod cake the most. It was crispy and I could taste the bacalhao inside. Not overly salty Out of the mains that we had the Bobo shrimp was our favourite. Very creamy and decadent. It goes really well with the rice. The trinhas de carne was a bit overcooked and chewy but had a strong beefy flavour which I enjoyed. The fries on the side tasted identical to the fries I get from Costco with my hot dog (which I also enjoy) The pudding de leche wasnt overly sweet. Very bouncy but not a lot of egg flavour. Wouldn't get it again Overall cute little Brazilian restaurant. I don't know if it's an accurate representation of Brazilian food but I know that the service is super sweet and friendly. Absolutely TERRIBLE! 1/10 recommend! My wife is Brazilian and loves to eat her native food, as do I, however; we got to the restaurant at 4:58 and at 5:31 my wife and I got up and left the restaurant as we had only received 1 glass of water within that LONG period of time! And no, the restaurant was not busy at all. Besides my wife and I, there was ONE other table of 4 people who all arrived 15 minutes AFTER us and got their order taken and we were just forgotten it seems (only 2 tables away)! Ok food. Well prepared food. Super appies. Blander than expected, and I admit I'm not a Brazilian foodie. Understaffed for a Sat night - but many places are in this boat. Food felt expensive, but most restaurants are struggling with high costs. Reasons for my downgrade: 1. $6 cover charge per person for the live music. For our table of 4, that was an additional $24. So the music was superb. Though for a small venue, too loud. If you plan to come on a live music night, plan to enjoy the music versus chatting with your group. They state 100% of this cover goes to the band, which i fully support. Would just be nice if they mentioned this on their website, so not a surprise. Also we should have picked a non music night since we wanted to catch up with our out of town guests. 2. Pet peeve: charging extra, even 50c for sides like aioli or salsa. 3. I like the simple, home like ambience -feels like you've been invited to someone's home in Brazil. But grimy, sticky tables can be avoided. read more

I love this restaurant. I'm new to Brazilian cuisine and was nervous about ordering from here via Uber eats. But I'm was so surprised how good the food was. I loved the Beiiinho, Brigadeiro, Coxinha, Pastels, Feijoada / Feijão. The steak was amazing too. Having discovered that they have vegan options, I decided to try them out. I'd never had Brazilian food before, so this is a pretty rookie review in that sense. I ordered their Feijoada Vegana ($19 plus tax), and it was ready waiting for me 20 minutes later. The heart of the dish is a black bean stew with plant-based meat. The stew was very hearty, coming with black beans (duh), zucchini, and only a few pieces (2-3) of plant-based sausage. The dish comes with white rice, sauteed kale that was deliciously garlicy, a simple salsa, and a puzzling cassava flour that I didn't see the point of. The stew wasn't particularly enthralling, especially given the lack of plant-based meat; it has a nice sort of smoky richness, but is otherwise not all that interesting. Other than that, nothing else in the dish is very interesting. I'm not sure I'd return given the rather underwhelming main part of the dish I ordered. Value for money, it's OK, in the sense that I was full; but you just don't get a very interesting meal IMO. I don't know if that's a trait of this dish, that this is a vegan version, or this restaurant. Unfortunately the food is the only thing this place had going for it the night we went. The wait to even order was over an hour and the waitress would see us waving and completely ignore us for large chunks of time until we had to go find her ourselves. When we finally got our food it was good, no complaints there! But again when we wanted to leave we waited another hour to flag her down to get our bills only to find out there was a cover fee for the musician that only started playing halfway through our meal. I have no problem supporting the musician but I think if you're going to do that, you should let people know when they sit down that there is a cover, not surprise them on their bill. Aside from Brazilian barbecue, known as Churrasco, this is my first experience dining at an authentic Brazilian restaurant. The restaurant itself is quite interesting and funky. I've never been to Brazil but I can totally picture this kind of restaurant setting found in Brazil. The decoration, both outside and inside, totally gives the Brazilian vibe. I can see it being a cool place to gather with your friends and watch sports games. We came during brunch hours as we bought the Groupon. There was live music - a woman singing with her guitar. The Groupon allowed us to get one entree each and access to the "buffet", that consisted of two cakes, fruits, coffee and 4 juices. I'm not sure if it was the food we had but we didn't have a positive experience of Brazilian food. We ordered the empadao (think chicken pot pie) and the hang over bowl. The server described the hang over bowl as being a very "heavy" bowl. She listed kale, sausages, bacon and polenta and said it was a very generous portion. My husband was hungry and this was what he got. When the hang over bowl came, the portion was not generous at all and where was the bacon?? (I checked the online menu once I got home and realized the menu never mentioned bacon.) My empadao was a HUGE disappointment. The entire empadao was lukewarm and, as a result, the food wasn't good at all. The older couple sitting beside us also got this and the husband indicated that his empadao was cold on the inside! He only ate half of his. The kitchen staff probably didn't heat it up thoroughly. The server indicated that without groupon, adding the brunch buffet onto your brunch entree would have costed each person $20. In my personaly opinion, I didn't think the buffet was worth it. Boteco is a nice brazilian restaurant. There you can find Nice food like Risole, coxinhas (chicken balls) pastels, pão de queijo (cheese bread) and fried cassava with cheese. The prices are not so cheap but you can eat the appetizers well. I didn't have opportunity to eat the meals cause my focus was eating the coxinhas (chicken balls). So... I can not say anything about the meals. But I can say something interesting about the drinks. Expected better, not great, but better than I got. Food was mediocre. I thought the food was mostly re-heated Costco stuff. The fries were same as Costco fries and the salsa seemed to be from Costco as well. The beef was a tad undercooked and not a really good cut. The place was mostly empty on a Tuesday evening which did not bode well and I was correct. They overdo it on the salt for sure and I was very disappointed in the food. Came here first time with some friends, suggested by a Brazilian couple they knew the place. And let them order... We shared the coxinhas and pastel (2 with cheese and 2 with beef), and the most of us got a picanha as a main. The appetizers were good, nothing special I would say. Liked more the coxinhas. And the picanha, from my point of view is little bit expensive considering the size of the steak. Also, asked for medium-rare and it was quite well cooked. We visited this restaurant on a Saturday night. The place is a casual joint (looks like an old house) with tables on the driveway and back of the restaurant. The "band" was just warming up. We ordered 2 picanhas medium well , 2 drinks, 2 flans and 2 kinds of appetizers. The cheesy round bread appetizer was our favorite and we didn't particularly like the potato dough with shredded chicken (coxinha?). The steaks were overcooked- dry and came out well done. We noticed there was no fried banana as described in the menu and seemed fried polenta was substituted in. The cassava fries (2 pieces) was dry, tough and overcooked as well. There was salsa instead of toasted cassava flour. It's a shame they veered off the menu without explaining why. When we asked about the banana, they said they were out. It would have been better if they disclosed that and the cassava flour substitution when we ordered. The "band" was not singing; all 4 of them were just yelling/ shouting which made for a LOUD unpleasant sound. At the end of each shouting session would be an even louder "Brazil" exclamation. As a Brazilian, I must say this place is below average - and I've been to quite a few restaurants both in Vancouver and in Sydney. I'm really only giving it 3 stars because the food wasn't bad - we had coxinhas, kibes and other pastries and they were tasty. I had the prestigio cake for dessert and it was good as well. However, the ambience and service both leave a lot to be desired - the place is dark, has no real atmosphere or Brazilian feel, looks old and a bit depressing, and the service is slow and definitely not the friendliest I have had. It hurts to give this place such few stars, because it is genuinely such a cute mom and pop shop. They also have live music and the decor is cute. They have outdoor seating which is always nice, especially on a beautiful day! The winning dishes for me were the coxhinas and the pao de queijo. They were the most flavourful! There are a couple reasons I had to give such low stars to Boteco though. 1. The prices are steep for what they are serving. Many of the appetizers were about $9-$15, and portions were not that large. For example we ordered the pastels (stuffed with mozzarella or beef). For $9, you will get 4 deep fried wonton wrappers stuffed with some cheese/beef. In total, I paid $25 for a lot of fried food, that wasn't very filling. 2. Flavours were lacking, especially with the pastel appetizers and the picanha. For the picanha, the onions were not caramelized (tasted more like a quick sear as opposed to sweet caramalized goodness) and the sirloin steak was not very tender. 3. Service was extremely slow. However, they were very busy, so we understand why it was a little slow-going. I probably would not come back here again, but I am glad I had the opportunity to try some Brazilian food! read more

I really liked our meal here. Laid back atmosphere, east facing outdoor area, homey comfort food eats - this is what you'll find here. It was understaffed when my husband and I came here; there was a large party seated outside, all tables outside were filled and there were a couple more tables inside, with only one waitress. It took a while for our orders to be taken, however once they were, food arrived quickly. I love my capilrinhas and I love them here. And with brazillian food, your mind instantly goes to beef right? Hubs had the steak and I had the beef, beans and rice. We also share an order of their deep fried, chicken filled potato dough appys. Everything was hearty, and hit the spot. The appetizer had a good amount of chicken in it, but it could have been more seasoned. Steak had the perfect amount of char and smokiness; hubby finished this right up. We waited a lot to be seated. Afterwards, the food came really fast but our waitresses didn't pay much attention to us, so we had to ask for more water and they passed by. The decoration of the place isn't pretty. They try to make a more Brazilian Boteco style but it seams quite old. We ordered pastel de queijo, pão de queijo, feijoada e picanha. As a Brazilian, living abroad for a while, I really missed eating black beans, farofa and picanha. Everything was great and really tasted like food from Brazil. The steak was made just as they make at Brazil. I recommend the place for the food, if you really miss eating Brazilian food, but not a place to go and enjoy a lovely meal. read more

Possibly the most un authentic Brazilian experience I have had. I grew up eating Brazilian food as child. The dishes were really missing that flavour and seasoning that typically comes with churrasco cuisine. I am a Portuguese by nationality, chef by trade and do have a firm understanding of portion sizes and seasoning meat. They have great appies like Pastel and Coxinha, cheese pastel is definitely one of my favorites to share. Main dishes are delicious as well, my pick would definitely go to Bobo de Camarao, the rich creamy sauce goes perfectly with rice, make sure that you order a side of fries to dip in the creamy sauce for ultimate comfort food experience. They should score a 3 but they lose a star because they add 15% gratuity to your bill. Apparently it's because it is Brazilian tradition. I spent 7 months in Brazilian and did not come across one restaurant that charged me gratuity. Boteco use to be one of my favorite places but it has gone downhill over the last few years. I don't know exactly what has happened but it looks like they are cutting corners. The food isn't as good and the servings are getting smaller. The only reason I still occasionally go to Boteco is because Rio's in downtown is even worse. Hopefully the owners can start investing properly in the business and hopefully turn it around. People here have complained about service but I've never had an issue. read more
