We ate here on the Sunday before St. Paddys. It was not as crowded as I thought it would be which was good. The place was very nice and had a great atmosphere. Our food was great. My husband got the Hen and I got the pulled pork meal and soup. It was really good and worth the wait it too to get out to us. The service was not great. I wish they gave us bread or popcorn since it was a long wait to even get our soup. Our hunger and thirst made the wait much longer. Our waitress took a long time to get to us and never really returned. She came back once to refil our drinks. I actually wanted to change what I was drinking since the soda was flat, she grabed my cup and ran away before I even could speak. It took so long for her to come back with that refil I just settled and drank the flat soda again. I think if it was not for the slow and not friendly service I would have given a great review. However, while looking around it did seem like other servers were being attentive. Unfortunatly, where we were sitting we could not really grab other servers to help us. I would return again. So Disappointed. I heard and read good things about this place, so I had to try it for dinner. I ordered the fish & chips and the fish was horrible and I couldn't eat it. It was like rubber, just terrible! The chips were okay. My friend also had the fish and chips and had the same opinion. Brazen Hen: Before bringing a family member diagnosed with Celiacs to the Brazen Hen, I called the restaurant to inquire about the gluten-free options posted on their website. Surprisingly, when we arrived 30 minutes later, the menu was not the same as the one posted online (with GF labeling). I inquired about the discrepancies between the menus and explained my concerns. Within five minutes the head chef, Donny, joined us at the table. He explained that there had been recent menu changes, and that they would be re-creating a new menu with clearly marked gluten-free items. Since it was after the busy dinner rush, Donny was able to sit down with us and answer all of our questions about their gluten free meals. Our simpatico discussion was quite interesting. Although chain restaurants have mandatory safety protocols and trainings in regard to safely preparing food for folks with sensitivity, allergies, and diseases, it was clear that Donny had done some research on his own. He asked my son what he would like to eat and explained how he would make it safe. We showed him an app on our phones that scans barcodes and relays information about whether the product is gluten-free or not. We scanned their soy sauce's barcode and found it contained gluten. There are so many sources where gluten is hidden! For those who have varying gluten sensitivities, it may not be much of a problem. But for folks with Celiacs, it's a completely different story! Ingesting gluten could set back villi from healing for several months. Donny went over all the gluten and dairy free options he could make on their menu. We enjoyed very safe and delicious meals thanks to his careful questions and preparations. Sure enough, no sickness upon returning home! Donny even gave us a sample of his gluten free pasta to try. On top of enjoying a delicious/safe dinner, it was clear that Donny was interested in hearing and responding to our gluten/dairy free needs. Monk fish tasted like ammonia, they took it away and I ordered Sword fish. My husband had to ask for them to take his meal back until my new meal came. After all we came out to eat together. while we waited, no one made any attempt to inquire about the problem. When the meal came out, my fish was fine, but my husbands fried fish was dried out from warming. We saw the manager to let her know what had happened and she said there was nothing wrong with the monk fish. So I asked her they why did it taste like ammonia? She said the chef said it was fine. So I guess I imagined it. We paid our bill and left. Sorry it was not a good dinning experience. Back to 84 Tavern on Canal where the fish is always great and customer service is perfect. read more

Went here for a family dinner today (Sunday) the restaurant was empty. The food was very good and if that was the only thing to rate it would have received 5 stars. Unfortunately the waitress Angela was very unprofessional and seemed bothered that we were there. Asked us how are food was 30 seconds after we were served and never to be see again until we were done. When one of us asked for a water she actually said "is it ok if i use the glass for your lemonade and takes glass and fills with water"! We have eaten here before and have always been very happy but today service trumped good food at a nice restaurant. read more

Good food, but not too allergy friendly. The "gluten free options" as it's listed on the bottom of the menu is pretty much just whatever is on the menu that's GF. Also, my nephew has a severe milk allergy, after explaining our concerns to the waitress she assured us they can prepare to order, so we did. There must have been some cross contamination because he became ill after a couple bites, and was on the verge of getting an epi-pen. We asked how exactly the food was prepared to figure out if he ate something, so the cook came to our table, which is usually a good sign. Except this idiot had no sympathy, and actually said "if you have these problems you should bring stuff with you for an emergency" (which we did, the epi-pen! Dumb-ass!). A total ass! On top of that they still charged us for the order that he didn't finish eating because it made him sick!! And we had 15 people and a $400 bill. Used to love this place, but NEVER AGAIN!! read more

So happy to see all of the new restaurants opening up in downtown Westerly. My parents and I decided to try this place out for lunch. We were seated as soon as we walked in the door. The inside looks awesome!!! Lots of seating and a great bar area. we had the option of sitting outside but we decided to eat inside. Our waiter was friendly and very personable. The lunch menu was terrific. Lots of choices. I ordered the PEI Mussels. Absolutely delicious! Great lunch sized portion. My dad ordered the cod sandwich and my mom ordered the chicken salad sandwich. They also said the food was terrific. The prices were very reasonable, not pricey at all!!! Service was terrific and beer was cold. Food - not so good. The empty restaurant on a Friday night should have been our first hint and also shame on us for ordering seafood in an Irish Pub. Muscles weren't fresh and were served with oil not butter as advertised. Yuck! Total disappointment! 7:30 on a Friday I went looking for decent apps and drinks...I went with 2 others as well. service was good and ambiance was nice but the food was ALL wrong. Clam chowder was cold and SOUR. Chicken wings served with horrible ranch dressing. Grilled vegetable salad should have been served with the grilled vegetables warm, not cold and gummy. Fabulous! Homey but hip atmosphere, friendly and attentive service and excellent comfort food. I had the pulled pork, which was juicy and had a sauce that would have been a winner in North Carolina. My wife had the crab cakes, which she said were the best she's had. read more

However, the food took forever to arrive (45 minutes to an hour), and was average at best. Perhaps on a night that wasn't so busy our experience would have been better--but with all the other choices available in Westerly (or nearby Mystic, CT), I won't be going back to this Pub/restaurant. read more

Ugh, I don't even know where to start with this place. We've been twice now because I want to give new places the benefit of the doubt. The punchline is that my husband, who is not a picky eater at all, told me that we will never return here. But they do have a nice patio. During out first visit, we had the strangest, most awkward server I have ever encountered. I ordered the shepherd's pie and my husband ordered the pulled pork. I remember the shepherd's pie being okay. The pulled pork was downright gross. My husband didn't eat more than a bite or two. All the little sides that come with the pulled pork were good though. Our food took forever and the server continued to be strange, but over all the experience was okay. Round two. They were out of half of the beers my husband requested and the server struggled to describe the beers that were in stock. She resorted to just brining him some samples, which was fine. We eventually ordered some beers and we asked the server how business is going and how the restaurant was being received. She sounded overly positive given our previous experience and the reviews that have been posted. We debated between staying and finding another place in town thats open on Monday and eventually decided to stay. We played it safe, I ordered the shepherd's pie again and my husband ordered the roasted root veggies on a green salad with chicken. Again, our food took forever. The shepherd's pie was soooo greasy. It was almost entirely ground meat and grease with mashed potatoes slapped on top. It was a complete waste of $14. My husband's salad was strange. It was a pile of lettuce, a separate pile of cold roasted veggies with little flavor, and third separate pile of cold, dry, flavorless chicken. McDonalds puts together a better salad. Thats when my husband said we would never come back. Its not that the food is terrible, its that the whole experience is just a moderately expensive, utter disappointment. There are plenty of other options in Westerly, even on a Monday evening. We will not waste our money at the Brazen Hen again. read more

My husband and I came here early on a Sunday night. The ambiance of the outdoor seating was perfect. The food? Even better. We each started with clam chowder, which was okay. The main dish was the star. We split one of the specials, a swordfish with a potato patty, green beans, and some awesome avocado sauces and other things. It tasted amazing. There was flavor in every bite. The presentation was great, too. It was also the perfect size to split. I would highly recommend The Brazen Hen to anyone. read more

Have been several times, always hoping for a better experience because we like the atmosphere. Waitresses are not friendly or attentive and the food is mediocre. Bread is only served if you ask for it and the butter is unsalted. Also, the Shepherd's pie is made with beef not lamb and the lamb stew is not on the menu any longer. read more

Had dinner at the Brazen Hen last night, started off on a bad foot with the miserable hostess, but we lucked out and had a great server- Stacy! Apps seems liked they took awhile but the calamari was good. I wasn't too hungry so I order the steamed little necks appetizer as my meal because the dinner menu did not offer any sandwiches or burgers. 7 clams for $12!!!! I was rather shocked. My date ordered the fish & chips main reason being that it was served with 'hand cut fries'. The fries were by no means hand cut and were actually the same frozen french fries many of the local restaurants serve. Again, Stacy was a great server!!!! read more

Disappointing. This is billed as an Irish Pub and restaurant. There were a sum total of two Irishish dishes on the menu. I went there expecting Boxty ,possibly corned beef and cabbage, soda bread, beef or lamb stew , instead it was seafood. Seriously? The drinks were weak. Our server was sans personality. The owner has two other restaurants, apparently he understands the local tastes as they are successful. But really I was SO excited to have an Irish Pub... oh well... If you are looking for a pub with a brilliant Irish theme and look, seriously the decor and the atmosphere rocks, stop on in. Service was slow. Wife and I had Asian calamari some french onion soup, roasted vegetable salad and fish and chips. Calamari was moderate. French onion soup was good. Fish and chips the fish had brown spots in the batter. My salad was suppose to be grilled vegetables you could hardly tell that they were grilled at all. Service was very slow and pricey. Been waiting for our food for over a half hour which is long for being one of three tables in this restaurant. The fried cod sandwich is good but I wish it was more seasoned. We went for lunch. Décor is attractive and new. Might be a good bar at night. Fish was good but greasy thick batter. I was told the salmon patty came in ready made and I know they are hard and dry. I also tried the shepard's pie . The meat portion was very greasy. For an Irish pub I didn't see much British food on the menu. Where is the homemade chicken pot pie, roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, meat pie and mash with liquor gravy, etc. I've eaten in British pubs in Britain and I know what they serve. Wonderful friendly adult birthday celebration. Our party had the crab cakes and the "stuffies"-a spicy stuffed clam as the grilled veggies & Caesar salads for apps. The stuffies were a big hit being a unique spicy local twist of an old standard. These are not the soggy stuffed clams you can get everywhere, the stuffies were hot and crispy outside and spicy & rich inside. The cab cakes were full of crab bits and the sauce was a good balance. The salads were nothing wonderful. In fact the predominant flavor of grilled veggie salad was the charcoal grill marks on overlooked (pre-boiled?) veggies. The only disappointment of the meal. The main courses were all very well prepared. The bangers and mashed were served w authentic "British" beans and yummy onion gravy. The pulled pork satisfied our Southern kin and the pesto crusted salmon was a welcome twist on an old classic. A nice selection of brews and mixers complemented the meal. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The Hen is a good choice especially if everyone wants something different. read more

Where to begin with the hen? I'm never really sure what to make of it. The place has a ton of potential but a few things seem to be holding it back. I've had multiple experiences with disappointing service. I used to be a server and am usually very sympathetic to members of a waitstaff, but on at least three separate occasions, the servers either seemed unhappy to be there, or were borderline rude. The restaurant also seems like they are not very focused on the 'pub' aspect of their business. The prices are high for both food and drinks, which would be OK if they were going for more of a fine dining approach, but I'm not so sure that's what they are shooting for. On St. Patrick's day, I walked in with a party of about 8 at about 9 pm craving a corned beef Reuben. The kitchen had closed and we were given our check immediately after ordering only one round of drinks and were essentially all but asked to leave. So we walked down the road to the other local Irish pub, CC o'brien's, which was packed and serving green beer and Reuben's until late into the night. As someone who lives locally, I really, really want to love this place but have been disappointed too many times. The food is very good, but that can only take you so far. I think that a place like this would do much, much better if it embraced the bar crowd a little bit more. I think offering something as simple as a late night menu and late night drink specials would go a long way towards bridging the disconnect between this bar and the rest of the downtown bar scene in Westerly. read more
