I loooooove me some Broasted Chicken and have been searching for some that is capable of besting the chicken I grew up eating at the long-closed Hanging Kettle in Santiago, MN. So, when I saw this place win the Best Broasted Chicken on Best of WCCO, I knew I had to go here. So, we went here on a detour from a trip up North on a Saturday. Got there a little before 5:00 in the p.m. and there was plenty of seating. The first thing I noticed is that everyone was eating and drinking from plastic, paper and Styrofoam. Things that make me go HMMMMMM...... OK, so we both order the half chicken dinner with onion rings. The cole slaw that came with it was good but had a different taste too it... I can't place that taste but at first, I thought, it doesn't belong in Cole slaw. By the time I got to the bottom of the Styrofoam cup though, I have to say, it kinda grew on me. The onion rings were very good, and it was a very large portion. If we were smarter, one of us would have ordered 1 side and the other order a different one but we didn't think of that and the waitress didn't seem interested in bettering our dining experience by offering any advice to someone who was new there. Now, the broasted chicken. It truly was fantastic. It still doesn't beat the ol' Hanging Kettle (I don't think anything ever will) and it doesn't beat the Highlife Lounge in Des Moines, IA., but it was pretty darn good. Big pieces of chicken Broasted to perfection, moist, flavored perfectly, served hot out of the broaster. The only thing that could have made it better was if it were served on a real plate with a real fork. But I'm not complaining. It also seemed like a long wait for everything, especially being the place was about half full and with the best of CCO thing and the higher visibility of this place, I would think they would pick up the pace a bit. But again, I'm not complaining (or am I?). If and when I'm back in this area again, I will definitely stop in here again, and I might bring a Fiesta Plate and a real fork with me. And I will NEVER try anything other than the Broasted Chicken here... no need to. read more

I eat here every time I'm hunting or fishing in Princeton, MN. It's clearly worth the short 16 mile drive. The food is excellent, fast and friendly service and very reasonably priced. My husband order wings (his favorite) the waitress said sorry we are out of wings, my husband sighed in disappointment, and the waitress said I have had to tell people that for 3 day now. your a chicken restaurant, if you run out, go to the grocery store yourself owner and buy some wings. Decided to try ordering out since we had service when we ate there but when i called and no one answered it really mad me mad. But i called again cause my fiancee is pregnant and wanted fried chicken. Still no answer. Gave it five more mins and called for a third time and still NO answer. Not even a call back! Truly the best broasted chicken. This is a small tavern that was recently expanded. This place will blow up your arteries. With dinner you should also get a coupon for a quadruple bypass. The chicken was ok, but really greasy and salty. Everything else is deep fried and there was no flavor. The only dipping "sauce" was either ketchup or Hidden Valley ranch salad dressing. Great broasted chicken, hot fried potatoes, (actually broasted like the chicken) fresh coleslaw paired with ice cod beer served in a frosted mug. The service is fast and friendly. The place is a cute and cozy, complete with fireplace and warm wood work. And better yet, the prices, this is serious good value! If you're looking for seeds, sprouts and tofu don't bother. However if you're looking for hot delicious food from the fryer and served up at a place that makes you think you have just walked into an episode of "Cheers" well you have come to the right place. Waited two hours to get food and didn't even get my order right. Waitress never offered to refill our drinks or check on us. I SO wanted this to be fantastic. I was looking forward to it so I justified the drive of 45 miles one way since I had some work in the area. I was pretty disappointed overall. I walked in and was impressed with the look of the place. It seemed quite clean for a bar. Sat down at a table and it hadn't been wiped off. At least the waitress noticed it, but all she did was wipe a little with her hand and made a comment about crumbs! Ever hear of a bar rag? They had a tv playing the newscast and what I found interesting was the clocks in the bar were actually slow. Usually bar time is ahead by a bit for closing up. Interesting. The waitress was friendly and she tried to give good service. She was the only one working. When I came in there was a family group of about 6 and 2 more arrived for them. As I was there, 4 more tables gained people all were an older crowd but this was around 5pm-6pm. The waitress didn't move fast but she moved methodically. Service was adequate. On to the food. I was looking forward to a small town burger and potatoes. A nice thick burger with good quality meat and fresh potatoes or at least good quality spuds. When I looked at the menu and saw the prices on the burgers, my expectations fell. A bacon double cheeseburger for $4.25, well I know in this day and age, don't expect much and I was right to lower expectations. It had an interesting square sort of a chiabatta bun that had a different taste - I'm guessing it had some herb seasoning. The burger patties were no different than from McDonalds cheap burgers. Frozen patties and small. They had to be laid separated by over an inch to go edge to edge on the bun. Reminded me of the where's the beef commercials. They couldn't be stacked and fit. There was one strip of so-so quality bacon cut in half and imitation cheese. So disappointed. Now for the broasted potatoes. They weren't. They were deep fried, not broasted. Now I'm fine with deep fried but why not say it instead of calling it what it isn't. And $3.50 for an order was pretty spendy. But they weren't overly greasy. They were sliced fresh potatoes and deep fried. Many places call them jojos but they're not broasted so don't be fooled like I was. She offered sour cream to go with them. Unusual, but good. Coleslaw is a favorite of mine but this was nothing special. It looked much like KFC's except there was no seasoning. The little cup was 1/2 full of the milky dressing. Beer is 3.2 and adequately chilled but not icy cold. Oh, their potato offerings are interesting. Besides the misrepresented broasteds they have waffle fries, tater tots and what they call hash browns are actually tri taters. An they offer regular fries too but I couldn't see whether they were frozen or fresh cut. I had such high hopes. The potatoes were the best part, though I may try their chicken sometime if I'm in the area but won't make a special trip to revisit. Hilltop Bar and Mannings are far superior though a long way away but if you're making a drive, might as well get something good. Recap: Burger 2 of 5 - plan to order two if you're hungry Potatoes 4 of 5 - good tasting but not what they're called Coleslaw 0 of 5 - might as well skip the cabbage and milk Beer - 2 of 5 - being 3.2 is the big penalty. I didn't realize it was just a 3.2 joint. Surprising they don't get a liquor license. I'll order pop if I go back. Service - 3.5 of 5 - She tried and was alone. I grew up and went to school in Cambridge. This was the spot for chicken. A lot of people still love it. I think the flavor has changed since the remodel. They added a bar where you can get a real drink now. If I remember right it was only a 3.2 beer joint before. I don't think Donna changed the recipe so maybe they added a new broaster that's not as seasoned? I have no problem meeting girlfriends at the Brass Rail for lunch. read more

Best broasted chicken in MN! And I've been looking for years... born and raised in TN so I'm picky And the owners are extremely nice.

We have eaten here a few times on our way back from our cabin up north, usually for dinner. The service has always been very friendly and helpful, and even though the manager doesn't seem to ever have enough people working to ensure faster service, the servers make the best of the situation and are always ready to give you a genuine smile. Our server last time was Tammy and was super nice. She had us laughing through much of our meal. The servers have always appeared very busy, answering phones, taking payments, getting to-go orders ready, helping with kitchen work, busing tables...you name it! They never stopped moving! The owner, Donna, came to our table to visit and tell us about the new addition to the building, including a patio, more fryers, and additional broasters to accommodate the increase in occupancy. She said she and her late husband bought the place in 1969, and she has worked every day since. She told us 'colorful' stories and was very nice. On previous visits she was playing cards at the bar or serving up coleslaw. The food is awesome, although not healthy in the slightest. The coleslaw is incredible, and is homemade. I was told their ranch dressing and sweet and spicy buffalo sauce are homemade too. My husband ordered buffalo wings and raved about the sauce. Talking to some regulars sitting at the next table (who had been eating at The Brass Rail since it opened) we were given quite the lesson on the menu. They told us the wait can be long, up to an hour depending on how many orders they have cooking, since the chicken is cooked to order and the number of broasters are limited. We have ever only had to wait 20 minutes from sitting down until our chicken came to the table. The wait didn't seem very long, especially with the help of cold beer and wine to drink during the wait. The broasted potatoes are cooked with the chicken (not fried) and served with plain or chive sour cream...so yummy, but served in HUGE portions. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes to eat. read more

If you like hidden gems and broasted chicken, the Brass Rail is for you. Located on busy 65 you park directly on the highway with semi trucks roaring by. The outside of the building won't impress you much, neither will the cars for sale next door. Once inside, you can see that the place is actually well taken care of. The 'world-famous' broasted chicken is fresh, hot, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and very affordable. No reheated dried out heat lamp nonsense. Just geat broasted chicken. You can keep your Popeye's and your KFC. You can forget about your Chick-Fil-A. And don't even bother bringing up the chicken at Minneapolis's precious little Left Handed Cook. If it's chicken you seek, the Brass Rail in tiny Grandy, Minn., should be your destination. This has been a destination location for me for more than 25 years. Because of the chicken, the cheese balls and the atmosphere. The chicken is always broasted to perfection. The cheese balls are a guilty pleasure that just might be better than a threesome with two beautiful women. And the atmosphere is small-town-Americana comfortable (although I must say I liked it better when it was a greasy spoon, pre-remodel.) But the bottom line is that this place has great chicken. I will prefaces this by stating the chicken was delicious, but unless you have nothing to do for at least 2 hours of your life, I would not recommend this place. The entire time we were there, everyone surrounding our table had complained in one way how extremely long the wait time was. I heard one waitress apologize , saying that there were super busy (even though there were still empty tables) and another tell a table that it is isn't out of the ordinary to wait over an hour. Either way, it was not acceptable. We were never offered another beverage after our first, and once we received our food, after an hour and a half wait, we never saw the waitress again. Finally after a good 45 min after we received our food, did we decide to just leave money on the table and walk out (minus the to go order I placed in the beginning, which never came). Having good food is one thing, but if you can't back it up with service, you will not see me there again. read more

Brass Rail, located right on Hwy 65 just north of Cambridge, is a hole-in-the-wall that was recently remodeled due to a passing truck putting--a hole in the wall. The remodel is great, but it takes a distant second to the food. I have had amazing chicken, amazing shrimp, a slab of fish that was crunchy and juicy, more food than I could imagine eating, and the cole slaw....ah!!! That cole slaw cannot be replicated! As prices go, they are middling. As portions go, they are ample to the extreme. My dad always referred to them as "the double d chicken place". You won't get a half breast portion like you get at KFC. You will WAIT for the chicken. Broasted chicken is made fresh, and it takes about 20+ minutes to finish it. Plus they have a loyal following, so it's usually pretty busy. All their potatoes are perfect: the tator tots, the fries, the waffle fries, and the broasted potatoes. These foods are served in cardboard baskets or on paper plates. The only glass dishes they have are the bar glasses. Donna has owned it as long as I can remember and refuses to fix perfection. (Allergy warning: no gluten-free food!) If you drive by, roll your window down. The food tastes as good as it smells!!! read more
