A 94 year old and two 70 somethings are on a quest toward the best of the best Broasted chicken here in MInnesota. Beautiful day to leave the cities and motor to Grandy. Arrived on a busy Friday to find a dinning room filled with the lunch crowd. Waitress acknowledged us and informed us she was there alone, so could we be patient. Luckily we had lots to keep us busy chatting among ourselves and our neighboring tables. Chicken was excellent. Each order delivered when it was fresh from the Broaster: Light crispy batter, lightly seasoned. Yes, you can hear the crunch. The coleslaw was slightly sweet with a creamy dressing. Menu has lots of appetizers, sandwiches and dinners if chicken isn't your thing. Saw lots of takeout orders going out the door! Worth the trip. The positives: call ahead ordering which will save you 30 minutes. The hot sauce they give actually has a hint of sweetness. Coleslaw in the quart size was much better. Observations from a recent visit: the coleslaw in small containers was different, really basic. The takeout quart size had the color of a little honey mustard added and was better. Different cook? Obvious inconsistency. The chicken sizes are so super small. The chicken breast was the size of a normal chicken thigh. I don't know who their supplier is, but end this business relationship and find a new supplier. My spouse even said the dark meat portion he had was skimpy. The broasted potatoes are good. The hot sauce lids weren't secure and one opened in my brown bag, thankfully it didn't leak in my car. This place used to be awesome for broasted chicken. A new business to shrinkflation. The coleslaw was good but again seemed off from what I've had there before. Maybe it was just me but I've had others say the same thing. Maybe the new owners changed something not sure. Went a few days ago. Wasnt particularly busy sat in the new bar side of the restaurant. Waited a bit to get beverages and our order taken. Food was delicious. A large group moved into the area and started moving tables all around us so we were enclosed in. We could barely get past them to go the bathroom or get the attention of the bartender. Despite the rather large sign on the wall that said please do not move tables. When I asked for my tab as my partners anxiety was kicking in the bartender who was a female was rather rude. I explained the situation and she didn't seem to care. So 5 starts for the food. 1 star for the service. read more

The Brass Rail is bigger and nicer on the inside than it looks from the outside. Great atmosphere. Stephanie was a friendly and attentive server. I ordered a broasted half chicken, their specialty. It was delicious. The skin was crispy and the meat was tasty and juicy. The broasted potatoes with seasoned sour cream were very good, as well. I stopped in for a late dinner on my way back from a meeting, and I will stop again the next time I drive through Grandy. read more

I visited Brass Rail on a Saturday around 4pm with my family, four of us total. Parking is... interesting. It's off of highway 65 so watch for fast cars but we managed to get parking easy enough. Once inside it's a little unclear what to do, but we seated ourselves without a problem. It's was relatively empty, maybe 10 other patrons. This place is epitome of dive bar esque, very small town vibe. But, my dad raves about their braised("not fried") chicken so I'll let them have it. After we were seated we got some menus and looked it over even though we all know we're getting some kind of chicken (when in Rome). My brother is a pescatarian so he ordered the butterfly shrimp but otherwise we all ordered the braised chicken (I ordered it with a side of braised potatoes, my mom got onion rings). Be aware the food does take awhile to cook due to the braising method but we knew that coming into it so it was fine. Once the food arrived... wow. It's a lot of food. I ordered the 1/4 white and still couldn't finish it. This is grease-city so be prepared. But, they give you a bunch of sour cream to go with the potatoes which I loved. Do not pass up the coleslaw!!!! I don't like coleslaw but I really enjoyed this, trust me. Just try it. This is a huge and indulgent meal, I don't think I would ever get it again because of how greasy it was but it was definitely very good quality chicken and you could tell it was cooked to order. If you're ever in the area, definitely stop in. Be prepared to wait but they weren't voted best chicken in MN for nothing. read more

We've driven past this joint for many many years, have talked about stopping but never have. The reason? Heading north on 65, getting there safely would be a challenge! And on our way home headed south we normally have already ate breakfast/lunch and are in a hurry to get home. That changed today as we pulled in as were headed home south bound on 65 and HUNGRY! Especially my smoke show of a wife, she was almost hangry, and that's never fun!! Heading south parking on the west side of 65 is easy to accomplish. The joint was very crowded as we arrived at 130 pm on a Sunday afternoon. I gently requested to my wife and daughter that we are all ready to order as soon as the waitress comes to help us. We were ready! My daughter ordered the chicken strip meal, my wife 1/2 Broasted chicken dinner and my fat ass decided I better try the double bacon cheeseburger with fried onions added. All of the food was wonderful!! My wife is a cole slaw snob (even though KFC's is her favorite), and loved it!! The mashed potatoes and gravy aren't as good as my homemade but as good as any restaurant around. The toast was GREAT we all loved it! My burger was much better than I expected from a place known for chicken, a bit greasy but like I said I'm fat so I really enjoyed it and only ate half as to have another snack later! Fat guys like to always have their next meal or snack planned out. The star of the show was of course the broasted chicken!! Crispy, juicy not greasy and very flavorful!!! The only negative, it was over an hour for lunch. Next time I will call ahead as the food was wonderful and we left with a ton of left overs at a great price! Get some! read more

The result is that you now get half the chicken for twice the price and none of the tender juicyness and great flavor. I can no longer recommend this place. It is now a hallow shadow of its former glory. The chicken listed for 26$ on the web now costs 46$. Used to be full eating one ginormous tender juicy breast. Now you get a breast no bigger than the tiniest thigh you've ever seen. Did I mention it's also flavorless, dry, and overly salty. Yeuch! It's such a shame. Save your money. My father said, "Let's meet at the Brass Rail. They have the best broasted chicken in the state." He wasn't kidding. It was amazing chicken in a tiny little bar and grill just off Highway 65. The walk-in, take-out business was steady while we were there and most of the tables were full. The chicken was as he described it. Delicious! We each ordered half a chicken so that we would have some for lunch the next day, and the chicken tasted just as good a day later. I'd go back here again and again. The chicken meal came with coleslaw, which was good (I'm just not a coleslaw fan) and your choice of side. I had the onion rings, which were crispy and tasty. Also, their fresh cole slaw is the cherry on top of the sundae. There are other items on the menu like burgers and such, but don't be absurd. Really. I don't live near by so yesterday when I was 20 minutes away there I decided to swing in as it's a 2 hours from us. Got there before 5 before it got busy. Took some time for the waitress to help us. Ordered a 1/2 of chicken which I see is now $20 with mashed potato's that comes with coleslaw and toast. My stomach can't do coleslaw so I asked if I can sub it for something even if it cost more. No. Ok. Keep the coleslaw cause it will make me hurl from the smell. 20 minutes later coleslaw ends up on my table. Flock. Damn near around an hour later chicken shows up and a soggy Dixie paper bowl of mashed potatoes swimming in gravy. Took 30 minutes for them to come around after serving dinner to get some water and the chicken needs something to wash it down with. Long story short it was the most expensive breast chicken I ate on paper with not so hot of service. Was it the best? No. Save yourself 2 hours of sitting there and go to Pizza Ranch. I'm super torn about this review of a new-to-us restaurant, because the chicken was indeed amazing!! The huge drawback was the wait, and not to get a table. We sat down immediately, and there were other open tables. There were three women working the floor, and hustled about like crazy. We ordered right away, and then waited. And waited. And waited. In the meantime we did get a tiny cup of coleslaw, which was part of our meal. I thought it was a little odd to bring it out separately so far ahead of our order. The booth behind us had a party that got up and seemed exasperated, saying that they had waited an hour and were leaving. They wanted their food to-go, as the to-go orders seemed to be moving faster. That made me start to wonder. I asked our server, Darci, if it would be much longer for our food, as we were approaching an hour as well, and she said "yeah...this table (next to us that had just been served) waited over an hour." That was the first we heard of any delay from our server. We decided to stick it out a bit longer, and asked her again...this time asking her to check the kitchen. She came back and said it was ready, just needed to be served. (Then serve it already!) Anyway, after that point we noticed all these parties that came in well after us were being served. We asked if we could talk to a manager, as we were honestly curious as to what was going on. Nobody ever came by...so we never found out. There was no standing around by the staff, so I know it wasn't their fault, but at least let us know! If I were the management, I'd offer a drink after such a long wait.
