She wanted to get her…read morenails done at a spot recommended to her from a friend who used to live here, so we decided to stop in. The nail shop review is under a separate review. But overall, this mall has definitely seen better days. While the exterior doesn't necessarily reveal the level of aging, when you get inside the mall you noticed pretty quickly but this mall is likely on it's downturn. There are several closed, or seemingly closed stores, and most of the traffic seems relegated to a couple of the larger department stores like H&M and Belk. A lot of empty kiosks in the middle of the walkway with the rest of them being occupied by local vendors that didn't seem to be getting much business at all. And if teenagers are still headed to malls on Saturday's to hang out, this is clearly not the mall that most of the local teenagers here hang out in as the traffic was surprisingly light for a Saturday - I just realized that may appeal to certain readers of this review. Lol. Anyway, unless you are visiting a specific store in this mall as a destination, I would probably suggest finding one of Jacksonvilles bigger malls for a true mall experience.

I will say that it seems like this mall keeps putting actual vendors in parking spaces. In this particular instance, there was a basketball vendor in that location, which leaves less spaces for customers to park. I'm not a huge fan of this mall. It seems like most of the stores I used to really like no longer exist, which is a bummer.

Why the word "Cajun" is in the name, I'm not sure. They do offer Bourbon Chicken, but other than…read morethat, everything they have is Americanized Chinese food. They have a special that comes with your choice of two entrees and a side. If you like, they can do 1/2 of one side and 1/2 of another side. I like to get both the fried rice and the noodles. The special with a large drink (you get one free refill) is only $9.29 after tax. Since I don't usually eat a lot at one sitting, it's plenty of food for hubby and I to share. I'm generally not a fan of orange chicken because it's way too spicy for me. However here, it has just the right amount of kick to it. Chao Cajun is one of the only places I have found where I can actually eat the orange chicken without it lighting my mouth up like it's on fire. Love the orange chicken and always order it. I've tried samples of the bourbon chicken and its very bland. Lacks really any flavour at all. If you ask, they will allow you to sample any of the entrees they offer. The fried rice is ok. I've definitely had better, but it's a food court so I'm not expecting much. The noodles are bland and most probably wouldn't care for them (I know my hubby doesn't); but, I'm a picky eater, so I prefer them without the added stuff in them like bean sprouts, etc., etc. The ladies who work here are super nice and are always smiling. They seem genuinely happy to be here and seem to love working with customers. It's so nice to see that. If you find yourself in The Avenues Mall and hungry, head to the food court and try the orange chicken here.

The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food... While there are other places I'd rather eat the orange chicken, I'll still go here occasionally.

Lady at the counter was nice and quick with the upgrades, so props there trying to make the upsale. But the food? Lo mein tasted like leftover yakisoba noodles from a gas station. Mongolian beef was drowned in soy like it had been marinating since last week... chewy, salty, no depth. The "new" hot honey chicken? Imagine sweet and sour chicken got dunked in Chinese mustard. I thought I was getting honey chicken with a little heat. I like chinese mustard, but that combo was confusing at best. Rangoons were the only win, but instead of sweet chili sauce she kept pushing the overpriced "yum yum" cup like it was liquid gold. My buddy grabbed food elsewhere in the court and laughed at my sad plate. He was right. It looked rough and tasted worse. Place might shine in photos, but taste buds tell the truth. Been years since I tried Pei Wei... might be years again, if ever.
