I gave The Flame Broiler a second chance today. Needless to say, I'm regretting my decision. My experience began on a positive note as the service was noticeably quicker than before. I was feeling optimistic....that was until I opened my bag. I was given a very sad looking bowl. The meat was so dry, I needed a gallon of water just by looking at it. Not even the magic sauce on the side could preform such sorcery to make this meat appetizing. Each bite was like chewing a rubber shoe. The rice was very watery which is a pretty hard aspect of the dish to mess up if you ask me, but sadly it was cooked poorly. There is not too much variety: 3 sizes (plate size gets you a spoonful of raw cabbage plus half an orange for dessert). 3 carbs/veggies (white rice, brown rice or blanched broccoli/cabbage/carrot mix). 3 proteins (beef, chicken, tofu)...or a half/half. 3 types of sauces: hot sauce, hot hot sauce, "magic" sauce. Use the magic if you don't like spicy and prefer sweet/salty soy. The food comes quick. Perhaps too quickly. 3 minutes or less, which means the proteins are pre-cooked and sitting around. I found the beef completely overdone and dry. Yes, I said "healthy fast-food"! It does exist, let me explain! A few years ago, this west coast franchise made its way to Jacksonville and has been bringing us the perfect after work-out food ever since! So what makes them such a great choice after a workout, you ask??? Well, their healthy choice menu includes dishes free of trans fat, dairy, frying, and skin-on meat! You can even watch them prepare the food behind the counter and sure enough, there are no fryers, as everything is prepared on top of a flat hot grill! The menu is pretty simplistic with your choice of chicken, steak, or tofu for protein and veggies, consisting of cabbage, broccoli, and carrots. You also have a choice of brown or white rice and chopped green onions to top your meal, if you'd like. Always get the green onions! They add incredible flavor! Depending on how hungry you are, you have the size options of mini, bowl, and plate. My boyfriend, who always has a big appetite, got the plate size with half chicken/half beef and veggies over brown rice. With the plate size being the option with the most food, it also came with red cabbage salad and orange slices. I got the same protein in the bowl size! The only difference is that the orange slices and cabbage salad aren't there. You wouldn't miss it because that little bowl is packed with food! I actually couldn't finish it all in one sitting. The name Flame Broiler is totally appropriate for this restaurant because the meat has a nice flame-broiled flavor! Although the meat is tender and nicely charbroiled with a great taste, the sauces are not to be skipped! The magic sauce is my favorite! It's tastes like a combination of soy sauce and teriyaki sauce! We both doused our plates with it as it added an incredible amount of flavor! Hot sauce, sesame dressing, and Hot-Hot sauce if you're feeling froggy, are also available! If you're on a complete health kick, Flame Broiler now serves tofu. I'm not a fan but I know plenty of people who are! I sampled it and the flame-broiled flavor is definitely there. I just can't get with the texture. It's nice to know they have this option though. Their way of cooking the meat surely makes it taste delicious. Their bowl with 5 oz meat and rice is a decent portion for lunch. I've been going here for ages. Surprised that I haven't done a review. I've only ordered the beef bowl. But I heard the chicken, amongst others, are good too. Sometimes I get veggies only with the beef or I'd get brown rice with veggies as my 'sides' with the protein. I would say for the price (around $10) you get a good meal out of it. You get a lot of the veggies and/or rice. To me, the amount you get is meh. I'd rather have more meat. You get a fair amount of meat. Talking to the employee, it's weight based. They probably put about 5oz if meat in a regular size bowl. It's not a lot, for me, but it's good enough, I suppose. You can also m get a side of extra beef for and additional $2-3 if your in the mood for extra protein, like me. The marinade of the beef is sooo good! It's like a sweet soy sauce/teriyaki type flavor, maybe even has a touch of zest flavors. For those who eat Korean food, it's pretty much their version of a bulgogi flavor. It's not a good as Korean food I've had in Cali but it's a good alternative for what we have in Jax/Fl. The meat is tender (I've never been here and the meat was tough; it's always good) and they're cut in julienne sized strips. And the beef doesn't have much/any fat on it. (I never have asked how they prep the beef) but theres never any renin ave if oils on the meat or bowl. If you're trying to get some good 'clean' eats, this (to me) is a great place. I usually order 3 bowls at a time so I have some extra meals in the fridge. I'll have to update my review and take a picture of my bowl before I devour it. I've only been to flame broiler once, but I saw that they were donating 15% to cystic fibrosis today and I had a coupon. I really enjoyed it last time so I thought what better time to go back. I got a deal for a mini bowl +20 ounce drink for $4.67.. they actually have this on happy hour Monday through Friday from 2 to 5 PM. It's also all day on Saturday and Sunday. The portions are very reasonable for this price. And the food is of very "great quality. I went at 12:30 PM and was in and out in 10 minutes. Service was very quick and friendly. The place was clean. Vegetables - broccoli, carrots, cabbage and optional scallions (no extra $). They have three sauce options; their "Magic" sauce, the hot sauce and extra hot Verde sauce. You can't go wrong with the "Magic" sauce. My fave. It's similar to a soy sauce and tastes great! Bowls are very affordable at about $8.00. On a Wednesday night I was being lazy and decided to get take out. Came here thinking it was an excellent option for when you don't want to cook. Got two regular chicken bowls, one only veggies and chicken the other chicken, brown rice and broccoli. My order was to go so I got some of their "magic sauce" which is basically teriyaki, hot sauce and left. When I got home I was shocked to find the bowl only a little more than half full. I was surprised since I don't even think there was 5 oz of chicken there as advertised. The food was fine but nothing memorable. Some of the chicken was slightly burned but put teriyaki sauce on anything and it tastes good. For $11 probably should have gone to a small Chinese place and gotten a better meal even if it was for slightly more $$. Final word: it's not great it's not the worse.
