If you need any proof that DC folks love their booze, note that this not-really-Metro-accessible bar in the middle of a transitioning neighborhood was packed on a Wednesday night. QED.
Not that I can blame people. The space is well done-- slightly vintage, laid back, lots of different bare material, and not much in the way of needless adornments. They've kept the television count at two, which is plenty for a place of this size (it isn't very large). Besides, it's a pub, a place where people gather to talk and shoot the shit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDCjPZ-6J7s) over food and beer.
So you want to know more about food and beer? A good enough selection of tap lines for me, featuring DC Brau, Dogfish, Chocolate City, and not to forget Yeungling on draft like good Philly guys (the owners) should be expected to have. If I'm not drinking beer, it's usually whiskey, and Boundary Stone provide a tremendous selection for me in that area. They also have cans of Busch Light. Yea, I said it... I like me some Busch Light from time to time, that shit is refreshing.
The comestibles are well-prepared. I don't usually order burgers at restaurants, but the promise of "bacon jelly" forced me to try one.... delicious. House-ground beef patty was rich and juicy. DC Brau chicken sandwich is a great choice as well. And their french fries are some of the best I've had in DC, even better than most of the fancy places that call them "frites" and sprinkle them with truffle shit or give you weird sauces. A really really good fry doesn't need anything other than a light sprinkle of salt; I've eaten all my fries at Boundary Stone in that manner. They serve their mac and cheese with stewed tomato, which is much appreciated. Boundary Stone also offer daily specials frequently, but I have yet to try them-- the braised pork a while back sounded delicious.
Service has not been a problem, as the bartenders are very attentive and the wait staff constantly looking around to see where they're needed. The owners can often be seen helping out if things are busy. Keep it up, guys.
Before I am accused of being a shill, there are a few things that would improve Boundary Stone in my eyes. First of all, I don't understand what is the purpose of vegetarian seitan "chicken" wings. Ok, ok, I may be biased as someone who has eaten animal flesh at every meal for the last two and a half years, but really... I almost wanted to order them, just to immediately throw them in the trash as an act of civil disobedience against such an absurdity. When the other food is so delicious, why waste time and space in the kitchen with that stuff? The other quibble I have is with the snack options such as the deviled eggs and fried pickles; they are tasty, but for $3 you get 3 pickle spears or 3 half eggs.... I realize that this is DC, land of the $6 cup of gelato (wtf) and $3000/mo 1br rental apartments, but can't you just throw on one more spear or one more half of an egg? That way I'd get an entire pickle, instead of 3/4 of one, and two whole eggs. Besides, what if an odd number of people order those items in a given night-- there would be a half of an egg or potentially 1/2 of a pickle with no purpose! What a travesty that would be! The mathematical properties of utilizing such odd serving sizes causes me much despair.
Overall, however, Boundary Stone is a solid place; 4.5 stars rounded up because it's [sort of] within walking distance from my 'hood in NE DC just up RI Ave and the owners are Philly guys. read more
