It was that time - to not only renew my license but also get a new photo. By scheduling my appointment a day ahead & confirming what I needed to bring with me (info is on their website) I was sure I was in for a quick visit. They even sent me a reminder text and email confirmation to show the check in employee. Upon arrival to the office I was 4th in line to enter (I got there about 5 minutes before my 4pm time slot). Some of us had appointments others questioned whether one was needed. Mind you there was a large sign just outside the doorway with a scannable QR code to make an appointment. The office was chalk full of people standing in line to speak to clerks and sitting. After checking in I sat down with my assigned number on a little piece of paper. I wish I'd packed a book as I was waiting for over an hour just to speak to the clerk. I must say I expected a lot more from my fellow Boulderites. Everyone I overheard said no to donating their organs and no to donation $1 to support organ donation awareness. When I finally made it up to the clerk I asked to be an organ donor and donate a dollar. They told me they had already gone by the screen to add my dollar donation. Sigh. I had the option to pay via card or cash. After confirming there was a processing fee for paying via card (which I did not hear them tell people about) I paid via cash. Next step was to wait on the other side of the room for my photo. This only took about 5 minutes. When I got up to take my photo they gave me direction on head positioning etc. Which was honestly a bit of a bummer (double chin in full effect in my photo) since I'd studied some online guides for how to get a good pic. At least I was able to show my teeth - unlike in a passport photo. They said my new license should arrive in 7-10 days. They weren't however sure if I could fly with my temporary license and old license with a hole in it. They advised I call my airline. All in all the employees were friendly. And while the wait time is less than ideal the experience is a necessary inconvenience.

Where you have to go for the DMV. All the way in the back. License only. You have to go somewhere else for car registration.

This DMV had the nicest employees when I visited. I've never, ever in my life encountered such nice people running a DMV. I was late for my appointment, made my appointment for the wrong thing, and was in the bathroom when they called my number. They still let me process my drivers license, and all with a cheery and friendly demeanor. That being said, this location was a dump. Tiny and hard to find. When I called for directions, I was told to go through the Sports Authority to get there. Wrong. It's in the mall entrance right of the 24 Hour Fitness. See pic. I can't fault the employees for this, but what genius decided that we need to process licenses with the state and car registration with the county? And not explain that clearly on the DMV website? Thanks for screwing up my day. I do appreciate that out of state drivers with a current license and good record do not have to take a written test. That's the way it should be done (I'm talking to you California!). But the system of processing licenses separately from registrations sucks! And make an appointment! It took about an hour to process my license and voter registration. It took much longer than that for the walk-ins I talked to. This was probably the most pleasant experience I've had at a DMV, once I found the damn place and got over how ghetto it was. But still, the system needs to change!

It was very refreshing to not have to prepare myself for that "usual" experience. The rep that I worked with was polite, patient, and seemed to enjoy her job. Maybe its the fresh air or the scenic mountains that sets everyone at this branch at ease, but I'll take it! A few tips: 1. Show up within the first hour if you can carve out time (between 8-9 AM). You will virtually have no wait. 2. There is a computer when you first enter where you must select the reason for your visit. It will spit out a ticket and when they're ready they'll announce the number on the ticket. 3. They do accept credit cards, checks, and cash. Beware: they upcharge about 2.7% for credit card use. 4. As with most DMV's come prepared: be sure to have insurance, proof of residence, ID, etc. Otherwise you'll be turned away. For proof of insurance you can show an insurance ID through you cell phone.

I feel this business has some unethical practices that need to be revealed, and stopped. In summer of 2022, my son took a driving test at CDI. The instructor Ed came back , said that my son made a long list of mistakes and failed the test. I asked Ed to repeat some of the details so I could write them down, he refused, and said he didn't have the time. He then said these to me and my son: "You can retake the test, but I'm not sure you can pass. " "I recommend you take this 2-hour driving lesson; after the lesson you are pretty much guaranteed to pass the test ." The test result came as a surprise because my son had a lot more practice than his older siblings back when they were taking the tests and they passed the test on the first try. I was expecting him to pass the test w/o issue. But given the fact that the instructor brought up so many issues, I thought perhaps the boy got nervous and totally messed up the test. I paid and signed up for the driving lesson. On our way home, my son was in tears saying that he disagreed with most of the issues the instructor brought up but he didn't get an opportunity to explain, or ask questions on his conclusions. He then took the lesson, and his impression about the lesson was that it didn't really offer anything new for him to learn. Took another test again with this same instructor Ed. After the test, Ed told us that my son failed the test again, and the issue was at one point his following distance was not long enough. Ed again recommended repeating the 2-hr driving lesson. I asked him for a copy of the piece of paper he used to record issues during the test; he refused and said the business doesn't do paper any more, and I'll get an email on the detailed issues found. But I never received any such emails for this test, or the prior. I decided not to take the lesson as I don't see the value of redoing the same driving lesson again just to fix the single issue on following distance. While I was waiting there during my son's test, I talked to a student who just failed the test with the instructor Ed. To my surprise his test took almost an hour while typically it'd only take around 15 minutes. Later my son took the test else where and passed on the first try with them. According to him, that experience was a lot easier than the prior 2 tests he took with Ed the instructor at CDI. The impression I'm getting is that CDI, and especially Ed the instructor, seems to be very much after driving lesson revenue. They go out of their way to make students fail. The DMV granted them the authority to provide an essential service of conducting driving tests for students. They conveniently abuse this power and turn it into their profit stream. I think their practices are unethical and must stop. DMV used to offer such service free of additional charge to the parents. Now parents will have to pay additional charge to the driving schools for such services. And again pay for repeated tests to some of these greedy businesses who prey on students. Does DMV reimbursement these parents? If not, do they get some kind of tax refund now that DMV is providing less service? Send your complaints against this business to this email at DMV. I was told by the lady at DMV that they treat complaints seriously and they do investigate and audit these businesses. dor_dmvcommunications@state.co.us

There are P.O. boxes you can access around the clock, a great card selection, automated machine to purchase stamps or purchase package labels, lots of fancy and festive padded envelopes, a drop off for Santa's Letters and more! They are patient, helpful, and so kind to those that walk up to their counter totally unprepared - which describes quite a few people yesterday. While it can be cumbersome to walk your packages in to this location (if you live near downtown) I often find it a much more enjoyable experience than visiting the sister location on Valmont (lots of grumpy patrons out that way - which can be amusing to witness if you are in the right mood). The Valmont USPS parking lot can often feel like a demolition derby - not to mention turning left onto Valmont when you leave can be near impossible at times.
