It was that time - to not only renew my license but also get a new photo. By scheduling my appointment a day ahead & confirming what I needed to bring with me (info is on their website) I was sure I was in for a quick visit. They even sent me a reminder text and email confirmation to show the check in employee. Upon arrival to the office I was 4th in line to enter (I got there about 5 minutes before my 4pm time slot). Some of us had appointments others questioned whether one was needed. Mind you there was a large sign just outside the doorway with a scannable QR code to make an appointment. The office was chalk full of people standing in line to speak to clerks and sitting. After checking in I sat down with my assigned number on a little piece of paper. I wish I'd packed a book as I was waiting for over an hour just to speak to the clerk. I must say I expected a lot more from my fellow Boulderites. Everyone I overheard said no to donating their organs and no to donation $1 to support organ donation awareness. When I finally made it up to the clerk I asked to be an organ donor and donate a dollar. They told me they had already gone by the screen to add my dollar donation. Sigh. I had the option to pay via card or cash. After confirming there was a processing fee for paying via card (which I did not hear them tell people about) I paid via cash. Next step was to wait on the other side of the room for my photo. This only took about 5 minutes. When I got up to take my photo they gave me direction on head positioning etc. Which was honestly a bit of a bummer (double chin in full effect in my photo) since I'd studied some online guides for how to get a good pic. At least I was able to show my teeth - unlike in a passport photo. They said my new license should arrive in 7-10 days. They weren't however sure if I could fly with my temporary license and old license with a hole in it. They advised I call my airline. All in all the employees were friendly. And while the wait time is less than ideal the experience is a necessary inconvenience. read more

Just the worst. Super unclear instructions online for what ID info is needed, they say no SSN card is needed and then you get there and they say they can't help you without an SSN. After scrambling to get it before they close we were told 10 minutes before 5pm that it's "too late, we don't have time. Schedule a new appointment" when there's no appointments for weeks. And so sorry to get personal but the woman with the thick accent, bleached blonde hair and zero idea how to apply makeup needs to be let go. Just incredibly rude to deal with when others in the office clearly wanted to help. Going to the DMV is already painful enough, pick a different location, you'll be glad you did. read more

Just moved to the area, wanted to get my DL within 30 days and this office was recommended to me because it was "less busy". I filled out my entire application online and made my required appointment. The day before my appointment I received a text directing me to check in via their link and remain in my vehicle until approved to enter the building. When I got my approval, to my surprise, a line 15 people long was at the door waiting to check in. The signs at the door clearly stated "appointment required at this location", however most of the people in line did not have appointments yet they weren't getting turned away. Still, the check in process was fairly quick, even the window transactions were moving along. The big bottle neck was getting your photo taken, The waiting area was small, crowded and did not have enough chairs for everyone waiting. Social distancing does not exist at this office. I waited for nearly an hour go get my photo taken, I saw plenty of people who came in after me, get their pictures taken first. I am guessing its easier to do a renewal than an out of state application. They told me it would take 7-10 days to get my license in the mail, it takes longer. If you need your license by a certain date, I recommend you give it more than a week. I left the Boulder DL office with a cold (not COVID), I will not be going back to this location. read more

This office has recently moved to Baseline and Foothills. Knowing my travel plans and not wanting my ID to sit in my mailbox for an extended amount of time, I made an appointment to renew my license a month ago. When I got to the office, I texted "check in" as requested in the text message I received from the office. Since I was 20 min early, it told me to try again at the time of my appointment. I waited in the parking lot, and tried again. This time I got no response. I walked up to the door, and discovered a sign saying they were closed and that all appointments would have to be rescheduled. I walked inside to confirm this, and explained my situation about traveling. They told me the only option was to reschedule online (even though the next availability wasn't for another 3 weeks) or make an appointment at another office. They need to find a better fix to their technical issues, considering it's not easy to make an appointment in a timely manner. read more

This DMV had the nicest employees when I visited. I've never, ever in my life encountered such nice people running a DMV. I was late for my appointment, made my appointment for the wrong thing, and was in the bathroom when they called my number. They still let me process my drivers license, and all with a cheery and friendly demeanor. That being said, this location was a dump. Tiny and hard to find. When I called for directions, I was told to go through the Sports Authority to get there. Wrong. It's in the mall entrance right of the 24 Hour Fitness. See pic. I can't fault the employees for this, but what genius decided that we need to process licenses with the state and car registration with the county? And not explain that clearly on the DMV website? Thanks for screwing up my day. I do appreciate that out of state drivers with a current license and good record do not have to take a written test. That's the way it should be done (I'm talking to you California!). But the system of processing licenses separately from registrations sucks! And make an appointment! It took about an hour to process my license and voter registration. It took much longer than that for the walk-ins I talked to. This was probably the most pleasant experience I've had at a DMV, once I found the damn place and got over how ghetto it was. But still, the system needs to change! read more

I told the people here that they are ruining the reputation of DMV's nationwide here. They are efficient, helpful, friendly, and downright funny. I walked in shortly after 9 am on a Friday, having lost my drivers license. Only one of the four counter slots had a customer, so I was called up immediately. I then learned I did not have any of the credentials they needed to prove I am "me" (I had gone with a list on the DMV reservation site, but it was inadequate). The clerk assured me that my fingerprint would be fine. No hassle, no eye roll that I didn't have the presence of mind to bring my passport, just the statement that my finger would work. It did. I answered all the demographic questions, took the eye exam, had my photo taken, paid, and was on my way with a temporary ID until my card arrives by mail, in about 20 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. The location itself gave me pause (it is in an old strip mall, destined for the wrecking ball one of these days, but the rent is probably quite attractive). Once I figured out Waze had not misdirected me, I took care of business. I live 40 miles away from this site, and commute to Boulder. I would seek out this DMV office before heading [back] to the one near my house, which hits all the national DMV stereotypes. Thanks for making it easy to get my new license! read more

Through most of the State of Colorado, driver's licenses, which are issued by the State and vehicle registrations which are issued by County of residence, occur in separate locations. This is true in Boulder. So off I went today to renew my Driver's license. Beyond a certain age, it must be done in person rather than online, since a vision test is required. Annoying to the individual but a safety measure for all. In the past, most visits here were long and frustrating. Today, it seemed that things have changed. I did go mid month, mid week, after opening rush lines. Lucky I was able to do that. I was greeted by a receptionist who determined the category of service I needed and gave me a numbered ticket. I was third in line. I was called, I was asked a bunch of questions regarding the accuracy of my existing info, took the vision test and paid. Moved over and waited for finger print and photo. The electronic finger print was a problem, not surprising though since my Touch ID on my Apple devices has the same problem, probably body chemistry. Got my picture, my temp license and left. All in 22 minutes, though it may take 30 days to get the actual license. Things to improve, send out DMV postcard reminder for renewal. So many people don't put the renewal on their calendar, years in advance. Staff still needs to be more friendly in demeanor. This location needs lines painted in the parking lot and some pot hole filling. Just for reference, the experience with the Boulder County run vehicle registration division is as pleasant as can be. read more

As far as DMV's go, to me this is one of the better ones that I have been to. For the last few years that I have been going here, I have never once run into any problems or issues. The staff is always polite and very thorough in what I need done and work to get things done as fast as the system allows it. I would also say that for a public building that sees a heavy foot traffic, this DMV is also pretty clean and free of random smells. The average wait time for me here at around 2-4 pm which is when I have usually been here is about 10 minutes. I think only once have I had to wait long than 15 minutes and that was on a Monday about 45 minutes before they were about to close. It looked like they were preparing to close down for the day and screening issues coming in the door and letting people know that they might not get help that day. Overall my experiences here have been pretty positive and I would return here for my DMV needs without question. read more

I feel Liz R's pain when she says you could spend forever here in what could be Boulder's Kafkaesque nightmare. But I went in the morning a half hour before they opened, and was there all of 45 minutes with total success. But the highlight of the morning was the bathroom - outside the men's room there is a sign indicating that before you take your nature break you must first obtain the security code from the merchant in the shopping center that you are patronizing (the DMV is in a small mall). I went to the Driver License office on Iris at 2:30 on a Friday to get a new CO license. We moved from California a couple of months ago and the appointments were booked out past my birthday renewal date, so I braved it and went without an appointment. No need! I was greeted by a friendly man who asked what I needed and got me a ticket for the right line. My number was called before he even handed me me the ticket! The staff person who helped me at the counter was really nice and very efficient. It took maybe 5 minutes to do the paperwork and eye test. The wait for a photo seemed long, but by then I was spoiled - it was maybe 15 minutes I don't know anyone who doesn't dread going to the DMV, so when things go well it makes your day! read more

First, let me say right up front that if I hadn't experienced it personally, I wouldn't believe a word of this. That said, I can honestly say that I've NEVER done a DL renewal Anywhere, and been smiling THE WHOLE TIME! Seriously, these guys have their s**t together like nobody else! Ten minutes total, in and out, and that included a couple of minutes spent filling out the review-card - another first. No other DL place I've ever been in showed even the Slightest apparent interest one way or the other in what anybody thought of 'em, and they actually seemed to go out of their way to make SURE ya got that message loud and clear! In fact, that was the ONLY thing they seemed to really excel at - making the experience as miserable and as frustrating as possible! I had always just assumed that that was "The Industry-Standard". But, unbelievably, I saw, heard, and was subjected to Absolutely Zero BS at this one, and nothing but happy, helpful folks to the last man and woman present! I have never seen ANYTHING even Remotely like it, and I'm 70! I'm actually kinda looking forward to the next visit - and NO I am Not kidding when I say that. Like I already said, I wouldn't believe a word of this if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Couldn't have been better. No improvement needed, or even possible, IMO. I've been lucky with dmv visits in my life and this dmv stood out as my most pleasant trip yet. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and efficient. My wait was about an hour for a walk in (half an hour less than my quoted wait time! ) The guy up front was nice and made sure I had what I needed before I waited. When I presented my driver's license to the TSA officer at DIA last Friday, I learned that it had expired. What??! How did that happen? I have to say that an impending visit to the DMV when I returned to town had crept into my mind like a nightmare on more than one occasion during my weekend getaway. Get there early and bring a book! I can't believe how long it took to get my license at this location. They prioritize renewals even though they take the exact same time and process. aftr waiting two and a half hours I was about to get my picture taken and I go up to confirm all my info...they had me listed as male!!! I had to wait another thirty minutes to correct that! The one redeeming thing was that everyone waiting was very nice and chatty. Just moved from SF, CA to Boulder and needed to transfer my drivers license over. Got there at 4:20pm on a Wednesday and there were only 2 people in front of me in line! I was done in 30 minutes. Make sure you check the website first to see which items you need to bring ahead of time; this will make the process very fast. The few employees I interacted with were very stern and all business, and to be honest, not very nice. You just have to not let their vibe affect you negatively. I'm always surprised by the unfriendliness of the DMV employees at the Boulder location. With the exception of the two folks at the camera, everyone there seems mighty unhappy and forgets that those they are serving are actually the ones who pay their salaries. Absolutely no customer service. Honestly, how hard is it to be kind and smile? My cashier literally coughed and sneezed into her hands several times before taking my license and credit card. I witnessed 2 clerks be so disrespectful to one Asian American man that it was just embarrassing. Were this a real business, it wouldn't last a day. This was my third attempt in a week to try to get my driver's license renewed. After leaving twice because I just couldn't devote so much time away from my job, I finally decided to tough it out today. Over 2.5 hour wait even though I got there before the doors opened. You cannot get an appointment online unless you book it 2 months in advance, so my advice is to plan way ahead and do this. I give this one star merely for the fact that the camera guy was fairly nice. Other than that, I hope people go without any expectations of a professional or courteous experience. Bring something to read or work on and plan to spend several hours. I would have renewed online but they wouldn't accept my photo from 10 years ago that THEY TOOK because it wasn't proportioned correctly. If you can renew online, do it. I had to register my car a couple of weeks ago and was absolutely dreading it. I'm from CA, where the DMV is pretty much the 7th layer of hell. I was beyond surprised when I walked in (30 mins before they were closing) and was out the door 25 minutes later. They have a nifty number-assigning machine that shoots out numbers as well as a large seating area where you can watch a TV to determine when you're up next. The staff (OMFG, the Staff) were NICE. And i'm not joking either. They were jovial and informative. I still can't believe how nice (and efficient the entire staff was -- they really made me pause and wish that someday CA DMV offices would follow suit. I feel for the people who left negative reviews. I wish they had received the same stellar service I did. read more
