I feel this business has some unethical practices that need to be revealed, and stopped. In summer of 2022, my son took a driving test at CDI. The instructor Ed came back , said that my son made a long list of mistakes and failed the test. I asked Ed to repeat some of the details so I could write them down, he refused, and said he didn't have the time. He then said these to me and my son: "You can retake the test, but I'm not sure you can pass. " "I recommend you take this 2-hour driving lesson; after the lesson you are pretty much guaranteed to pass the test ." The test result came as a surprise because my son had a lot more practice than his older siblings back when they were taking the tests and they passed the test on the first try. I was expecting him to pass the test w/o issue. But given the fact that the instructor brought up so many issues, I thought perhaps the boy got nervous and totally messed up the test. I paid and signed up for the driving lesson. On our way home, my son was in tears saying that he disagreed with most of the issues the instructor brought up but he didn't get an opportunity to explain, or ask questions on his conclusions. He then took the lesson, and his impression about the lesson was that it didn't really offer anything new for him to learn. Took another test again with this same instructor Ed. After the test, Ed told us that my son failed the test again, and the issue was at one point his following distance was not long enough. Ed again recommended repeating the 2-hr driving lesson. I asked him for a copy of the piece of paper he used to record issues during the test; he refused and said the business doesn't do paper any more, and I'll get an email on the detailed issues found. But I never received any such emails for this test, or the prior. I decided not to take the lesson as I don't see the value of redoing the same driving lesson again just to fix the single issue on following distance. While I was waiting there during my son's test, I talked to a student who just failed the test with the instructor Ed. To my surprise his test took almost an hour while typically it'd only take around 15 minutes. Later my son took the test else where and passed on the first try with them. According to him, that experience was a lot easier than the prior 2 tests he took with Ed the instructor at CDI. The impression I'm getting is that CDI, and especially Ed the instructor, seems to be very much after driving lesson revenue. They go out of their way to make students fail. The DMV granted them the authority to provide an essential service of conducting driving tests for students. They conveniently abuse this power and turn it into their profit stream. I think their practices are unethical and must stop. DMV used to offer such service free of additional charge to the parents. Now parents will have to pay additional charge to the driving schools for such services. And again pay for repeated tests to some of these greedy businesses who prey on students. Does DMV reimbursement these parents? If not, do they get some kind of tax refund now that DMV is providing less service? Send your complaints against this business to this email at DMV. The first time we arrived for my daughter's scheduled drive, we approached the car and the employee literally put his finger up, signaling for us not to come over. We stood there waiting until he eventually approached us, and he was not particularly friendly or welcoming. My daughter looked nervous getting into a car with a complete stranger, and as her mother, I was uncomfortable too. The fact that he was associated with law enforcement was honestly what made me feel comfortable enough to let her go. To be fair, when I picked her up, she told me he was very nice to her during the drive, which I appreciated. Then today, we arrived for her test and had almost the exact same type of interaction with another employee. We pulled up next to the Top Cop vehicle, and he continued looking at whatever he was working on inside his car without even acknowledging us. This really bothers me. You are asking parents to pay hundreds of dollars and then hand our teenage children over to strangers who will be alone with them in a vehicle. Is it really too much to expect your employees to smile, introduce themselves, acknowledge the parent, and make the teenager feel welcome and safe? These kids are already nervous! But what frustrates me the MOST is the money. We were led to believe that we HAD to spend approximately $700 because these services were legally required for our daughter to get her driver's license. Then this past week, one of her friends from school, who is the SAME AGE, was able to get a driver's license without their family spending anything close to what we were told we needed to spend. So what exactly did we HAVE to purchase, and what was optional? Because if there were other legal ways for our daughter to meet Colorado's licensing requirements without spending approximately $700, that should have been made crystal clear before we paid. $700 is a lot of money. How is a single parent or a family living paycheck to paycheck supposed to afford this? If all of these services weren't actually legally required, families deserve to know that BEFORE they spend hundreds of dollars. At this point, I genuinely feel misled, and I would like Top Cop to explain exactly which portions of what we purchased were legally required and which were optional. Depending on that answer, I also believe a refund should be discussed. We chose this company because the Top Cop name and law enforcement connection gave us a sense of trust. Unfortunately, the customer service and lack of clarity surrounding what we actually needed to purchase have seriously damaged that trust.

We feel a little safer now and this was important for our kids to learn too.

So I decided to take the class to learn how to drive safely in snowy/icy weather. Michal was very knowledgeable and I learned a ton. The first part of the class involved watching informational slides as he talked and some videos of scary accidents. The actual driving portion was super fun! You get to practice how to handle different types of skidding, and Michal would give you notes on what went wrong and how to correctly navigate. I was not very good at first, but after doing it over and over again, it felt more like second nature by the end of class. I'd highly recommend this class!

And THEN they directed me to drive through a school zone. Again, they did this without telling me their digital speedometer wasn't reflecting my speed. And after that, they failed me for driving 5 miles over the limit in that zone because....again.... I was adhering to the speed on their digital speedometer, which was listing my speed at about a mile UNDER the speed limit. They later explained that it was a "newer car" which was preset to list the overall AVERAGE of my speed during the entire trip. Wait, it gets better: Not only did they ADMIT to doing this, they claim they've done nothing wrong and they're still charging me for the test AND the retake of the test, because I "failed". So far, I've filed a complaint with Consumer Protection Services, contacted just shy of a dozen local reporters and Monday I'm talking to a lawyer. I shouldn't have to explain this isn't good business practice.

This is one of those spots that may have good employees, however there is an inconsistent tester who makes the process feel frustrating and unfair. Specifically she docked points for my son leaning forward to check before turning, for turning with hand over hand, and for holding his arms at 10 and 2 instead of 9 and 3. This feels like a waste of money and if you get her, you're likely to be failed then invited back for more lessons. Note to management of this company: check these reviews! You will find many complaints from customers about testing standards and reported mistakes that do not align with the DMV driving manual. For anyone thinking about going here, it is a coin flip to see if you will get a fair evaluation. You're better off finding a different school where you don't gamble your money

Upon expressing my frustration, and then my intent to posts reviews about the interaction I had with the CO-OWNER, of all people (maybe that's why he thought he could just treat me like that), these are the emails I received from Bruce: This a response to the owners response: he wants me to feel badly about someone who had a heart attack- someone I don't know- instead of realizing we had a business agreement and feelings don't factor into business. Why the course was postponed is no concern of mine. The fact that I paid for the class MORE THAN A MONTH before it began and I didn't get what I was promised is the problem. Instead, this man continually tries to belittle me and make me look bad (he says I registered for the class less than a week before it began. I've included my email receipt so you can see what a liar he is). He's obsessed with trying to make me feel badly about a health situation his friend/employee is going through, and apparently he wanted me to mention this in my initial email. When I failed to do so and focused solely on our actual business transaction he took it as a lack of empathy and still continues to bring it up in EVERY correspondence (I don't think all 3 emails I posted are showing- he sent 4 so if they do appear I'll add the 4th). It's too bad he had a heart attack, but the fact that they didn't have anyone to step in or take over teaching a certification program for adults, who all have busy lives, is bad business. Period. As for the rest, Bruce's emails speak for themselves. If you want to give your hard earned money to people like this, have at it.
