Boudin SF usually has good breads/butter, salads, sandwiches, and good environments in general. Something just didn't feel right here at this location. I came in to place my order on kiosk for dine-in just after they opened and grabbed a table number. The lady after me and the man after me who ordered at kiosk actually received their orders before me. I waited at my table for 18-23 minutes until my order showed up. I did tip them a few dollars at the kiosk too. Attitude problem. Yes. I had the Mediterranean chicken with lemon hummus $15.49. I asked where is my hot cup tea $3.09. Woh, the lady staff employee had an attitude tone as if she doesn't have time to get the hot tea for me. She said to go up to the guy at busy counter to get a tea, so I got up and grabbed two bags of my belongings with me wondering if this is how they treat dine-in customers. Yes, I was very unhappy and disappointed. As I walked over there, she came back with a box of tea selections, so I went back to sit down. I picked chamomile tea to calm my nerves. Very unhappy. She gave me the tea bag and paper cup, so I asked why no hot water in it. She said that I will need to go fill it up on my own, so I went. Hot boiling water jug didn't have hot water. Are you kidding me? I got very upset wondering why Boudin SF would operate like this one. I went back to my seat unhappy eating my salad feeling very frustrated with the experience. Eventually, I only stayed 7-10 minutes and boxed up my own foods in my own takeout container and left as an unhappy Boudin SF customer. The table number was still on my table. What's wrong with servers or service these days? I totally regret coming here and tipping them for this kind of dine-in experience. My senior mother had a simple question about a water cup, and the interaction with the manager, Veronica, felt dismissive and unnecessarily shaming. Instead of responding with patience and courtesy, the tone and manner of the conversation made my mother feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. What stood out to me was the inconsistency in customer service. During my visit, I observed some customers receiving warm greetings and attentive service, while others did not receive the same level of engagement. Customer service should be consistent and respectful for everyone who walks through the door. I actually worked at this location years ago, and one thing I appreciated back then was the genuinely welcoming atmosphere. The staff treated people with kindness and respect regardless of who they were. Unfortunately, that was not the experience I witnessed during this visit. I also noticed a significant change in the manager's demeanor once I asked for her name. The interaction immediately became friendlier, which left me wondering why that level of professionalism wasn't present from the beginning. Order took 18 minutes, a little long for one bread bowl and a staff of 8+ with medium-low volume of customers. Top bread bowl piece cold and uncooked. Breadbowl itself kinda warm. It came with 2 slices of meat, 1 layer of lettuce, very light spread of cranberry, you can hardly taste it and a few thin slices of red onions. Also the sourdough roll was stale. I came in with my family on a Friday night. There are about 3 parties of patrons tabled with people eating, I waited in line for 15 min before someone told me to order myself through the machine at a distance. Not happy with this place at all! I walked in, the place looked clean. The parking lot tends to be a nit of a mess. Its a combination or crappy drivers that are even crappier for parking. The sandwich looked quite hardy, and the soup was presented with croutons in the center, a nice touch. I ordered a Caesar salad, and she ordered a side of fries. Both also came with a bunk of chewy bread and butter. The salad could have used more flavoring in the dressing. There was no hint of anchovies, and it needed more pepper. I liked the Parmesan shavings. The croutons were large and crunchy, and had more flavor than the salad. The sandwich was fine, as was the soup. Neither thrilled, but it hit the spot, and there was a half of each to take home. We probably should have ordered the half and half combo, but oh well. The place is bright and the ceilings high. It's been a bit since I've been back to Boudin, primarily since they've changed their monthly free loaf reward program - you now have to make a purchase within the month to get the loaf. Fortunately, they still offer the free cookie once a year on your birthday month. And it is with this freebie that brought me in this time around. What used to bring me in the door once a month has now limited my visits to once a year; to be honest, without the monthly freebie, Boudin rarely crosses my mind nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I am still a big fan of their bread and soups; it's just my food budget has shifted to other establishments more top of mind. This location is notoriously known to have some of the worst parking in this area. To mitigate the frustration in trying to find a spot, I just decided to park down the street near the residential properties and walk down (it was about a 3 minute walk). There is also another mall across the street that has more spots but similarly as competitive. I came in for a quick lunch alongside my birthday cookie and decided to get the "pick a pair" which allows you to pick two items among sandwiches, melts, soups, and salads. With soups, you can opt for the bread bowl with an extra one dollar charge. The meal is quite reasonable in price for the quality of food and amount. I selected the half smoked brisket melt and clam chowder in the infamous bread bowl. The sandwich was great in the flavor department but a bit weak in presentation; the singular slice of brisket was a bit sad as it sat there sandwiched flat between two slices of ciabatta. Personally, I would have sliced it to add a bit of volume to the sandwich and possibly enable the other ingredients and flavors to be better incorporated with each bite. The clam chowder was excellent as usual and the bread bowl certainly fills you up as it soaks up spoonfuls of the yummy soup. I also ended up redeeming my free sourdough long loaf after my purchase so the trip out sure seemed a lot more worth it! The service was pretty good; staff were friendly and efficient. The food came out fresh, correct, and well packaged for my return home. Overall, Boudin still has what it takes to thrive with its extensive menu with highlights on their sourdough loaves. Bread bowl and soups are the go to for me here but the melts and sandwiches are great too. The melts need a bit of a revamp, I think, to add some more volume - as they currently stand, they don't stand out too much. Their decision to change the reward system may be a cost reduction plan and to me, it has definitely hit their marketability (I don't even mention or recommend their rewards program anymore to friends and family). I went yesterday to this location with my daughter and we got some clam chowder to go and she ate the homestyle mac & cheese while I had the new brisket sandwich She described the mac & cheese as past identical to Panera bread mac & cheese, and I described that sandwich as one of the sandwiches that Panera bread took off the menu sometime last year. The sandwich would've been better if the meat was chopped up, it wasn't evenly distributed enough across the bread and there could've been a little bit more sauce to make the flavors come out better I do like that they have the free loaf of bread option. I always come here and normally it's good service and my food is on time. However, today I was in the pick up line and was blatantly ignored by a girl with faded blue hair. I didn't see a name tag otherwise I would put it here. I felt it was racially motivated because she helped the Caucasian lady and the Indian man (I'm African American) with smiles, asking if they needed utensils and politely gave them their bag of items. Once I was the only one left standing she ignored me, wouldn't even look up to make eye contact and continued packing more pickup orders at the very counter I was standing in front of like the others! In order to get my food, I had to verbally get her attention to look up and gave her my name. She just twisted the bag round on the counter and didn't say anything. She never said thank you or offered me utensils WHICH I DIDNT have in the bag like she did the other two. I ordered the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and it was amazing! The bread was just the right texture and was not overcooked at all. I also ordered the cheesy garlic bread which was a very generous portion for the price. The garlic bread was a little overcooked for my liking, but the flavor was great. It's very spacious inside and there was a lot of seating available when I went. I thought it was super convenient that you could just order on the kiosk and have your food brought out to you. The service was great as well, and the workers were quick to answer any questions I had. Overall, I would definitely come here again! I definitely don't think it's as good as the Boudin in San Francisco, but it'll definitely hit the spot if you're craving a clam chowder bread bowl. read more
