We stopped in Bayfield for a couple nights on our Colorado road trip. While staying there, we ate out here. The beer my husband and I had here was hands down, the best either of us have ever had! There were a lot of apologies from the two waitresses, along with sarcastic jokes about needing more money in tips due to the inconvenience. Can't comment on the food because we left after a few minutes. No one seemed interested in waiting on us even though we saw several people who appeared to be employees standing together inside. The only person who appeared to be working was a waitress going back and forth between customers outside on the patio. She told us as she passed by that the hostess would be with us shortly. This place is OK. There is nothing special about it. It's small and can get crowded fast after 5pm. The menu has yet to be updated since it's inception. The same selection of appetizers and almost all-beef menu items are getting stale. The menus could stand to be replaced as mine was stained by some liquids and had some funk growing under the plastic. All the beers we have ever had here are average to above average. They do not stray from 5%-5.5%ABV. Their hoppiest IPA was rather sour and not complex tasting. Something is going on with their portion sizes. They appear to be getting smaller, but the cost to the customer is premium priced. We waited for a seat after being told they had to wipe down a table for the two of us. The third waitperson that asked us if we had been helped actually helped us to be seated. Our waitress was the best part of our experience. She was a pleasure. read more

Being a small local brewery in a rural town is naturally hard but it is even more difficult in the shadow of some of the bigger breweries in the Durango/Pagosa area, but Bottom Shelf Brewery was the standout brewery of the Durango Brew Train. My fav was the Wings of Silence Golden Ale because it was light bodied but packed 6.5% punch. While I didn't get to experience the restaurant/brewery first hand because I was on the train, I enjoyed the BSB company so much that I plan to take a weekend trip to the brewery in Bayfield, Colorado so I can sample what else they have to offer. I used to really like the place. Quaint, little brewery. Went there recently and left frustrated as the owner stated to the hostess,"Don't sit another table until I tell you." The kitchen was backed up. After being told -with open tables- that it would be a 30 minute wait. There was no list- We were the list. We asked if we could still be seated and order beer until the kitchen got back on track. We were planning on meeting others for drinks before dinner anyway. He said "No." Okay not the worst thing that has happened in restaurant history, but indicative of their lack of service. Really great little brewery. This was a return visit for us. The Driptorch appetizer was a spicy "eggroll" filled with cream cheese, green chili, bacon. The Rockwood Wheat beer was kinda weak but the Bear Neccesity Blackberry Wheat was awesome. The owners and staff are super nice. Service was fast and friendly. Been for food and drinks twice now, the most recent of which was last night. Beer: Great brews with a decent variety, better than some of the more popular spots in Durango. The IPA is flavorful while not being a "hop-bomb" at all. Very mild and delicious. The Saison was good too. Last night they also had a ginger wheat and another 3-4 options that I don't recall. If microbrews aren't your thing, I think they have a few domestic beers and at one time had PBR on tap. No beer snobs or elitist folk here- just a friendly bar and serving staff. Bar: there's a few TVs around so if you want to keep tabs on a game, you can do that. Also they are a full bar so margaritas, long islands etc are available. If you get a margarita, ask about the waiver... ;) Food: the drip torch appetizer is real good, and they offer other items like wings, and a nacho plate (which I had for dinner) that has house chips, cheese, green chile, poco de gallo, beef brisket, and some kind of cilantro lime sauce I think. Partner had a turkey club on rye with a side of Mac and cheese. Tried both, were yummy. They've got a few other dinner plates that sound good that I plan to try at some point. Atmosphere: in a word, welcoming, especially if you meet Greg, the owner, who is often working the bar. Lots of low key, friendly chatter, and his staff seems to be enjoying their time working as well. There is patio seating out front when the weather is good, which is a plus. Out of all of the microbrews in the four corners, this one sneaks in as my favorite, just above the Dolores River Brewpub. Both places have that small town, local pub feel without the rush of tourists or cacophony of sound coming from a huge bar filled to the brim with people. read more

If I was passing through town again I would definitely give this brewery another try. I can't give it 5 stars because I felt like something was missing however i could not say what it is. This place was so aggravating that for the first time in my life I didn't tip the waitress. And here is why. We came in for lunch on Sunday, a group of 10 (6 adults and 4 kids). Sat down, got the menus, ordered drinks. Then ordered food, which was 3 or 4 appetizers and a couple of sandwiches to split. Nothing special, no unusual requests. Just asked the waitress to split the check in two, two adults out of the group were paying separately. 45 minutes later no food. All that time we were sitting there, patiently waiting for the food to arrive, including a 3 year old, watching other people come in, sit down, order, get their food and LEAVE!!!!! After 45 minutes I said "excuse me miss, when will we get our food? We've been waiting for 45 min!" She told me the kitchen was busy. Then some other young woman came up to me and started telling me the kitchen was backed up. When I told her that we watched several parties come and go she said the kitchen was pushing the appetizers through!!!! WE ORDERED APPETIZERS!!! My mom actually said she was ready to leave and they heard her. Well, I guess that got some panties up in a twist because after 10 more min the waitress brought our food with some attitude on the side and then! this is the best part! when she brought the checks she made a point of telling my step sister (who was paying separately) that since she was nice she comped their drinks!!!!!! And charged me for ours!!!!! I was speaking for the entire group, we were all frustrated! And she comped drinks for half the party and charged the rest full price!!!!! And she said it loud enough for my husband to hear! Did you really think that we wouldn't hear that or that my step sister wouldn't tell us?!?!?! LMAO really? Well, guess what, that's how you lose your tip! Wow! What a great place for dinner. Came highly recommend by our raft guide at mountian waters rafting. If we lived in this area we would burn our kitchen...... What a nightmare. After placing our food order which included some appetizers, I went inside to ask our waitress how our order was coming after waiting for a half hour. She just shrugged her shoulders. At the 45 minute mark, she came out to give a bill to another table. I asked her how the appetizers were coming. No reply. At the one hour mark, someone else from our party went inside to speak to the manager. He asked the waitress about our order. Apparently the waitress NEVER turned in the order. Highly discouraged. Decided to take our son here to try something new and enjoy a beer on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Was told the wait would be 20-25 minutes and decided to go ahead and wait. My husband tried to order a couple of beers while we waited, however there was no bartender present. So we waited without a beer which is fine. Eventually the hostess seated us, outside which would've been fine if we had gotten service. We waited at least 10-15 minutes outside at our table after waiting 30 minutes for a table. No server ever approached us to greet or take drink orders but brought out drinks to the table next to us. Talk about feeling like your business doesn't matter to a restaurant, definitely disappointing. Ive been in the food service industry so I give grace when I know the kitchen, servers etc are backed up and trying to recover, my frustration lies in seating people when you don't have the staff or capacity to serve them. It leaves people feeling like a burden to the establishment. Thanks but no thanks, I will not visit bottom shelf brewery in the future. read more
