When my perimeter wall was taken out by a drunk driver (and I mean smashed into by his speeding Mercedes and not to dinner and a movie), I used my trusty Yelp app to find services in the area. Boston Brick & Stone communicated effectively, sent Adan out to apprise the repairs needed, and completed a thorough, insightful, estimate suitable for framing, or at the very least to give to the drunk driver and his insurance company. If you get to interact with Adan, be ready for his handshake; he not only provides estimates, but obviously is working the brick and stone himself! read more

I am reposting this review because my original review of Boston Brick had my review removed after it was challenged as not being based on a firsthand experience. To be clear, my experience with Boston Brick was firsthand. Boston Brick performed work on our neighbor's property during our post-fire rebuild. In the course of that work, they entered our property without our permission, and construction associated with their work extended onto our property. This directly affected our property and caused additional complications and delays during an already difficult rebuilding process. When we raised concerns about what had occurred, we were unable to reach a satisfactory resolution. Instead, Boston Brick challenged our Yelp review on the basis that we were not their customer. While we did not hire Boston Brick, their work directly affected our property, and our interactions with the company regarding that work were firsthand. I am posting this review so that other homeowners, particularly those rebuilding alongside neighboring construction projects, can understand our experience. Based solely on our direct dealings with Boston Brick and the impact of their work on our property, I would not recommend them. read more

I wanted to paint my fireplace firebox. All I could find was spray can high temp paint. I reached out to Boston Brick and Stone and was fortunate enough to speak to someone who got me to the right person. Even though I was not a previous customer, I was taken care of and treated as if I was. Serant told me where to go to get the paint I needed, and the followed up to make sure I was able to get, and then followed up again to make sure everything turned out right. 50 min before the arrival of the person coming to inspect the project, I got a phone call from the company saying that there would be a fee of $100. It is OK for a company to charge a fee, but not when they only inform you at the last minute, when a homeowner may have already arranged to be away from work to wait at home. We had communicated back and forth several times and the fee had not been mentioned until the last minute. What other surprises do I have to expect? read more

My father always told me, "you get what you pay for." Well, he wasn't entirely correct because with Boston Brick & Stone you get MORE than you pay for. That is illustrated through their incredibly detail-oriented artistry and craftsmanship and their personalized service. First: the service.... Let's face it, when you have a renovation, the crew basically lives in your home during working hours for the duration of the job which is why the professionalism and personable manner of The Boston Brick & Stone was a huge plus during our fireplace renovation. Not only did they take great care in covering the space with a floor to ceiling plastic "tent" but they dealt with my wife and I working from home and also handled our overly protective dog with total grace. Plus, when their was a delay (due to supply chain) they came and removed the plastic tent and cleaned everything and put furniture back into place so we could "live normally" while we waited for the stone to come in. Now I will tell you about the artistry of their work.... It is true that Boston Brick and Stone will not be the cheapest bid and a huge part of that reason is the level of craftsmanship in their work. When they demoed the stone facing of our existing fireplace, they did it with care so that they could put the same pieces back at the end - which was like the largest jigsaw puzzle ever! Now, looking at the finished product, you would never know. Plus the added framed border suggested by stone fireplace designer veteran, Burton, completely elevates the look of the whole room. This is a long way of saying that we are beyond satisfied with Boston Brick & Stone - Logan, Burton, Jimmy and the rest of the crew have become family and we will miss seeing them now that this is over. I received a reply to my estimate request within 30 min. I'd made them aware of some trouble we'd had with prior roofers who had ripped my father off and that now seeking a full re-roof, we were encouraged to repair or replace my dad's chimney beforehand. Kylie M. expressed concern for my father, and encouraged me to check with companies closer to Orange because with farther companies, like their own, there would be additional service fees for companies traveling more than 50 mi with their crews. I appreciated her promptness, compassion, care and concern. Based on honesty & Integrity I think Boston Brick and Stone is worth considering for those closer to Pasadena, CA. read more

This is our second project this calendar year with Boston Brick & Stone, and there is a reason for that--they are top notch. For this project, we asked them to demo our existing wooden deck and create a stone deck made from Los Angeles paving stones in an ashlar pattern. They completed the project in under 3 weeks and it looks FABULOUS! Once again, they showed us their solid craftsmanship, professionalism (kept our yard super clean and had excellent communication with us), and honestly--their crews are always super nice guys that you truly enjoy having around! I have a problem with chimney contractors all saying "free estimates" but tagging on a fee in order to come out. Boston B&B had the highest tag of $100, other's ranged from $40 to $70. HOWEVER they did sound the most professional. I just dropped them 1 more star just now seeing they do the $100 surprise as common practice. I'm going to do project myself. read more

We needed an estimated to rebuild a patio structure that was damaged by a neighbor's fire. We wanted one estimate for the insurance company, but a second estimate to build the structure we REALLY wanted. It took a over week to get them to reply to my request, another week+ to get a guy out here, then eight for them to reply with "we must decline your offer and be involved in your project, because you are only looking for a price and would not have us do the work." Don't bother with this company, it's a waste of a lot of time. read more

First off, the finished work that these guys do is very good, which is why they get two stars and not one. I had a built-in grill island made, and it came out very nicely, which almost made the frustrations I experienced worth it. The problem is that the contractors have a very 'shoot first, aim later' approach to things, and appear to be horribly overbooked and scattered. This resulted in me having to wait 3 weeks with the unfinished island just sitting there, and the patio in disarray, while they attempted to avoid my calls at any cost. When we first started the project they were very responsive and attentive, but once they had completed the main construction they basically wrote me off and only (very reluctantly) gave me updates when I called the office and complained. To me it felt like all their reassurances and guarantees were just lip service, because when it came down to it they had no qualms about screening my calls and just letting me sit, knowing very little about what was going on, for the better part of a month. I also had not one but TWO keys made for them to access the patio, and they lost both of them, which is extremely unprofessional and just straight-up incompetent. Didn't give me a lot of peace of mind to know that some random keys to the patio are just floating out in the ether somewhere. So, as you'll see in the rest of these reviews, Boston Brick does beautiful, high-quality (and expensive) work. But the vibe I got was that they are a pretty ramshackle operation that doesn't have customer service as a real priority. read more

I've worked with Boston Brick & Stone on many jobs over the last decade, including a paver patio at my own home. Boston Brick are not the cheapest, but they are by far the best value at the end of day They're not like most other contractors low balling bids to then change order the daylights out of you once they have your house torn up and you're knee deep with them. When I sub Boston Brick, I know I won't be hit with a change order mid way through the project that I then have to eat or try and charge my client. Masonry i.e. brickwork and chimneys are a lost art, Dave at Boston Brick is one of the few contractors left who can build a traditional fireplace. The skill of the masons at Boston Brick are second to none, time and time again I'm impressed with the quality of work by these guys. If it involves finished concrete, fireplaces, bricks, stone or pavers I don't trust anyone else to maintain the level of quality that I demand. read more

I had this company come out to look at my fireplace and send me a quote. They told me I needed close to 12k worth of work and charged me $300 for the estimate (that I was told by the office would not be applied to the work). I agreed because I needed the work done for my insurance company, and they seemed like they knew what they were doing. Bt after taking my deposit they told me they wouldn't be able to do the work for 5 months. I found someone else who could do the work and asked for my deposit back only to learn it is non-refundable. They suddenly said they could "do it sooner" which seems odd, so I opted to take the loss as they are shady and highway robbers. This company oversells and overcharges so beware, do your homework, and shop it around. I would not recommend using this company for any of your fireplace needs. read more

I have been working with Boston Brick and Stone on one or another project over the last couple of years. The last one had them replacing all our floors with patterned granite. Their attention to the smallest detail (including being mindful of and minimizing the disruption to our lives during installation) has been exemplary. Chimney inspection: Great experience with Boston Brick & Stone! I've gotten their informative & fun newsletters over the years and finally made the call to get my 1938 fireplace and chimney inspected. Wish I'd done this a long time ago. Such a small cost to identify problems with an aging system and possibly avoid a disastrous fire! The BBS staff were friendly and responsive on the phone and made my inspection appointment right away. The inspector, Mario, arrived promptly, was pleasant & professional and did his work efficiently and quickly. Even just looking at the fireplace, Mario made a few observations about possible fire code issues, which made me very keen to hear the prognosis quickly. Within days, Boston Brick provided me with a detailed report of all issues, including Fire Code references and thorough photo illustrations (including chimney scope-cam pics!). So in under a week, I went from total (and dangerous!) unawareness of my fireplace's safety to knowing exactly what this old system needs in order to be safe for the future. Boston Brick and Stone (BBS) has a great reputation, so when our home inspector told us we needed a closer chimney inspection, we went with BBS. They came out to do an inspection. To get ready, BBS told us we had to clean the area around the top of the chimney and the bottom as well beforehand. The guy from BBS came and stuck a camera up in the chimney. He didn't even go on the roof to check down the chimney and he did not look at the back, so I have no idea why we needed to clear these areas, which also cost money. In the end, after charging us $79 for this "inspection" all the guy told us is that they would need to do another inspection, which was much more expensive with a cleaning AND at that juncture they could only really tell us what was wrong with the chimney partially. However, AFTER they started doing some seriously expensive work, THEN they could give us a fuller picture. I almost laughed when the guy told me this. Really? You can tell me what work needs to be done AFTER you partially demo my chimney? In any case, this struck me as really weird. This also struck my REA as really weird, and he does this all day every day, so we decided to get a second opinion (which also is reviewed on my yelp page). Charging people $79 to tell them they need another inspection is misleading. We were in escrow. The clock was ticking and the next appointment for a second inspection was a week away for BBS to just possibly tell us that for hundreds more that they would have to start work on the chimney to tell us what was actually wrong with the chimney. Seriously!? That means the chimney work would be started on a house we don't even own yet when all of a sudden, oops, you need 1000s of dollars more work Also, why did BBS tell us to clear the areas away from our chimney top and back when the guy never looked in either spot!? LAST, we never saw 1 picture from this inspection and in the end, we feel like BBS clearly ripped us off by sending some guy to stick a "camera" up our chimney for 15 minutes for $79. WHERE ARE THE PICTURES!? We got nothing in return for our $79. When we complained to BBS, they just said, that the service they gave was as stated on the website, which is also not the case... Use BBS at your own risk. read more

We had these guys come out to inspect our chimneys on a $99 special. Guess what? Just like in previous reviews they told us one fireplace needed full demolition and the others needed full grout replacement at a cost of $3500 per fireplace. They then hit me up for work every few weeks. I told them they were out of their minds on the price, to which said "Well if anyone is willing to go lower we will match their price" which really said to me "Our first price was completely astronomic because we were hoping you wouldn't bid this out. But since you are not one of our suckers we still want your business." I have gone looking for fireplace help elsewhere. I think this is a racket. read more

I hired Boston Brick and Stone for a simple cleaning on my chimney that was repaired just a couple years back. They sent me a multi page description of all these things that needed to be done, and told be it would cost $2500 to make the fireplace decent again. When I asked them if I could do a portion of the repair and questioned why I needed to do the entire job, they just said it was necessary and they would do the entire job or nothing at all. I called Fireplace Freddie, who came out and did another inspection. They quoted me a fair price on only what was necessary, not things that could wait several more years. We used BBS for some hardscape work and to create a pergola. Prior to hiring BBS, I got estimates from two other contracting companies, which mind you took forever to get because typical of the contractor stereotype, they wouldn't call back right away, they couldn't see us for a few days and after finally showing up, it took a few days to get the estimate. You know the routine, almost everyone I know has experienced similar. My experience with BBS was completely the opposite. I called BBS, I got a call right back. Unheard of. I got an appointment for an estimate that same week and the estimate in writing by email less than an hour after that appointment! I was floored. I love that they helped me come up with some great ideas and alternatives that I wasn't even thinking of, AND also fit our budget. They continued to impress me each day that they were on site. They were extremely tidy and just before they would wrap each day, I would get an email informing me that they were done for the day and that they'd be back again the following morning. The job was completed on schedule despite temperamental weather and we love the finished results! Everyone from the billing dept. to the on-site production managers were extremely professional. Terrible experience with these guys. Hired them to spray enviroshield or (creoshield) on cresote-treated wood in crawlspace to prevent off-gassing. Looked at work after first day and noticed some spots they missed. Told them. Looked again the next day and still not done. These guys where only spraying the sides and bottom but leaving the tops of beams untouched. They had also sprayed paint all over my insulation instead of moving it out of the way (another thing they were being paid to do) Instead of moving the insulation, they left a great deal of it laying on top of the beams and just sprayed around and on the insulation. This made it impossible to access the tops of the beams. Insulation was also left stuck to paint on wood. A real mess. ** see photos at bottom The response i got from bringing it up was awful. I endured insult after insult saying i was a micromanager and that one out of ten customers are just complainers and that i was one of them. These guys left about 20% of work unfinished because they didn't think we would check under the crawlspace. All the tops of the support beams untreated! Entire top of mud-sill untreated!! The project manager tried to tell me it couldn't be done but when I asked the guy who was doing the actual painting he said it could, they just needed more time. They didn't seem to be able to tolerate that they had been caught rushing the job because they underestimated the work that needed to be done. I heard over and over how they were going to lose money because of this job. Well, after pulling teeth i got them to come back and spend a couple more days on it. I lost my insulation because they had torn most if it to shreds and painted it, and therefore could not be put back. It had also been left outside improperly covered for over a week during a few days of rainfall so this insulation was now torn, painted, wet, and very dirty. And they never gave me the money back (1000$ for reinstall) I also did not have them put it back because there was so much of it laying all over the floor and they said most of it was already laying there and they were not going to touch that insulation. I had just had this insulation installed 5 months prior by a professional insulation company so I doubt that the newly installed insulation was all over the floor. I believe it was an excuse by boston and brick to again not have to put in the full amount of work we had agreed upon. They keep saying.. " it was only a few spots we didn't treat...you are exaggerating".. Trust me, they didn't buy two more gallons of paint and spend two more days on the job because they only missed a couple of spots. They got caught. They knew it. And of course after they were done they missed some very obvious and accessible spots right by the basement staircase but at that point I was afraid to ask them to do it because the owner of the company seemed to become increasingly upset over the situation. He came over to "discuss" the problems with the project but I believe he just wanted to come over and give me a piece of his mind about how I was the problem and not them. He became impossible to converse with and he walked out of my home, refusing to look at the untreated pieces of wood and the photos of the painted and torn insulation. How can he know what went on when he is unwilling to look at the evidence? I was told "You are no customer of mine", which is funny since he gladly took thousands of my dollars. Let me be clear... The contract was to treat ALL ACCESSIBLE WOOD. They did not treat the tops of beams in order to save time and thought I would not be able to notice. They say that it was only a few pieces but from what I observed that is untrue. And still to this day the project is not fully complete but they were paid in full (5700$) for a 900sq ft mud-sill and some support beams and joists. Not a big house. No excuses for not finishing. The owner says they took all my insulation out "free of charge" yet he forgets the fact that I PAID to have the insulation REMOVED. They also NEVER offered to replace insulation from their inventory free of charge. Project manager said I had to pay for damaged insulation. Keep in mind when i found pieces of wood unfinished they did not want to do any more work because they were not making any money on the project. They did not offer once to truly finish it and would only continue to make up excuses. They didn't visit my home because of concern, they came over to argue. This happened when the CEO came and when the owner finally came. The workers also dumped the left over paint waste into my soil and bushes right in front of my home which is illegal. At the end of the day I felt like I had been deeply taken advantage of and was bullied when I stood up for myself. This was a very abnormally disturbing experience. No one should have to go through this. Based on all the low star reviews here, it appears others have had issues with this company as well read more

Their Mason Sammy has been with them forever and started every day with a smile and a commitment to craftsmanship, Anthony oversaw the project with a keen eye for finish and quality, Mark designed the project beautifully, and Dave the owner was frequently on site and a pleasure to work with. Boston Brick and Stone will never be the cheapest bid, but paying for quality only hurts once! That being said, we feel like we got 110% value for the price paid! read more

I needed to have a subterranean garage waterproofed and to get an estimate for my dirty 85 year old chimney. Since they were two separate projects and different teams work on different projects there, I had different estimates taken. The first was for the garage, the process to waterproof was explained in an easy to understand manner and I felt confident that they really knew how to take care of this type of project. The estimate came in at a lower than expected price. Once I set the appointment for work, the office staff took care to confirm the date and make sure I had all the paperwork in advance. The work was completed in a clean, organized fashion. The crew was kind enough to replace some boards on my deck that they needed to break out to dig out the proper drainage. They also helped me cement a hole in the inside of the garage. That was an added bonus and saved me some time, trouble and expense! As for the chimney estimate, it came in at a much higher than expected price as it basically needed a full rebuild. The staff took the time to explain the reasons for this and it is after all, 85 years old. I can't afford the amount required at this time, and they are working on alternatives to help prevent future deterioration and/or collapse. I agree with a lot of these posts. This is a solid good company that seems to do a good job. They were very thorough on an evaluations of some items in our house, and gave us detailed information about how to properly use the fireplaces in our property. I believe that the fireplaces reasonably should have been allowed to use regular wood, but upon evaluation they found something amiss, so they investigated further and decided that it wasnt safe for us to use real wood. I hired Boston Brick and Stone for an estimate on chimney repair 5 years ago. At the time I decided not to do the work but I wish I had. I recently hired them again for another chimney inspection due to water leaking into the house around the chimney. The inspection was very detailed with lots of pictures and explanation about the areas that were damaged. It was more expensive than I had hoped----but aren't home repairs often this way? I requested a discount and they offered a small one. This was helpful. The only thing I would say about any discounts you receive is to make sure you understand the conditions of the discount (it might be for cash only or it might exclude other offers you were planning on using). I am sure another company would have done less of the work and offered lower prices, but the reason i was in this mess is that a previous homeowner hired someone to rebuild the chimney and they clearly cut corners. While the work was not cheap, I felt VERY CONFIDENT in the quality of the work. The supervisor was amazing (Alex) and his crew were very nice and hard working. The supervisor explained the work every step of the way and showed us all that he did to make the chimney secure and usable, in addition to preventing further water from entering the house. In the end, I understood this 3 day job to be quite complex and well worth the $3000. I highly recommend BBS if you are looking to get quality work that is well done and thorough. If you want to skimp or cut corners to find the cheapest price, you should go elsewhere. You might find cheaper, but I highly doubt it will match the quality of BBS. read more
