All looked and sounded so mouthwatering good. Settled with the hibiscus rose donut = lick the box don't want it to be over dreamy purrr good. Fresh bread baking scent wafting. Bossies is: 1. Such a vibe for dinner. Sitting outside reminded me of getting dinner in Europe- intimate, romantic, laid back. Perfect corner building in a not-too-crowded street. 2. The menu was well-rounded, included great staples, along with some fun fusion items. There's a couple gluten free options, but it is NOT a gluten free kitchen. 3. The portions were amazing! We came here after work and it was quite empty on a Wednesday night. Lots of delicious things on the menu on the pricier side but most things are homemade so it's understandable. The pork belly sandwich was HUGE. The coleslaw was abundant with juicy tangy fish sauce. I love how crispy the pork belly was and it was certainly a generous portion. Fluffy bread. I love the fries. After driving by The Shop Brunch on a balmy Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend only to find a long line of people awaiting to get in, we kept driving because my back and I don't do standing very well. Continuing along Milpas Street brought us to Bossie's Kitchen when my husband asked, "What about THIS place?" He turned up Canon Perdido where I quickly scoped out Yelp, and when I saw high ratings... AND NO actual line to wait in, I responded with, "Let's go !!" We are both so glad we went !! We took a lovely, shaded table on their outdoor patio. The weather was perfect. It was quiet, relaxing, and even before we got any food, I thought, THIS is how to spend a lovely afternoon. RIGHT HERE. It's a tiny little restaurant nestled amid a peaceful, quiet neighborhood. It was quiet, unassuming, and relaxing. And then, we got our food. It was DELICIOUS... and plentiful. I ordered a half turkey sandwich with avocado, pesto aioli and fresh basil leaves on foccaccia, along with a "side" of their mac 'n cheese. OMG... there was so much mac 'n cheese, I was sooooooooo excited. The "half" sandwich was like one whole sandwich if you ask me. In fact, I had the other "half" of the half, along with the remaining mac 'n cheese for dinner, and I was super excited about that !! The mac 'n cheese was creamy, but not runny. It had lots and lots of garlic breadcrumbs baked on top for a delicious crunch. What a GREAT side !! My husband ordered their BLT, and he was super impressed with the amount of bacon they gave... not just the traditional 2 strips of it... more like 4 or 5, and they were thick pieces too... not just the shriveled up pieces one normally gets. All ingredients were really fresh and tasty, he said. It looked great, but I don't eat bacon, so I didn't ask to taste it. He didn't get any side with his lunch for reasons I don't understand, so he asked if he could try my mac 'n cheese. I gave him some, as I always share with him, but if you could only know how I hesitated with THIS one. It was truly THAT good, so it was difficult to say yes, but I did anyway cuz I'm a nice person. I just had to think about it this time, ha ha. Next time, and yeah, there WILL be a next time, I will demand he order his own mac 'n cheese. This place is a keeper. Stopped in this evening for an amazing meal. We made reservations ahead of time as we are from out of town and have little patience for waiting. This is a very quaint sized restaurant but guessing from what I could tell if the weather were better it has the ability to also serve on their patio. Now to the experience. From when I called to make the reservation I could feel some energy and pride in their service. The experience when we ultimately made it there lived up to the hype. I had the chicken herb thigh with a side of mac'n'cheese and my wife had the pot pie. It was all just perfect. As a sucker for homemade bread I also had the focaccia bread. It was.a good serving and the crust was executed 10/10. The bread in my opinion was perfect. My wife was more of a fan of the donuts but that has always been our preferences. Loved sitting outside! (I think it's cuter out there) The service is pretty slow, but the staff are nice. Their salmon bowl is one of my favorite meals in all of Santa Barbara; it's so flavorful, filling, and fresh. One thing to note is that portion sizes vary a lot depending on what you order. For example, the salmon with a side of soup isn't much food, especially for the price. That said, the quality of the food is always excellent. Bossie's is a cute space. Parking was easy and so was ordering. Employees were uber friendly! I ordered the Korean fried chicken sandwich and fries. Unfortunately, the fried chicken sandwich just tasted like fried chicken with Guchujang sauce that you could get at Ralphs. It just doesn't seem like a lot of thought was put into the chicken. Rather it was just dressed at the very end with the sauce. It had a nice slaw but could've used an extra element like pickles or pickled jalapeños to finish it off. Just happened to discover this tasteful, little establishment before attending a concert at the nearby Santa Barbara Bowl. Soooo glad they are back open! We love the delicious, farm to table homey eats and love to bring guests from out of town to eat multiple dishes family style here. Huge fans of the chicken pot pie (which our 10 year old describes as exceptional) and the salmon and farro dish. I didn't really realize that you can find donuts at places other than donut shops and bakeries, so once I discovered Bossie's attractive looking donuts, I knew exactly where to go whenever my next craving for donuts hit. Some were great while some were only okay. But all of them looked lovely with their colors and toppings. The donuts are more fried than I'm used to, giving the exterior a crunchier texture. I didn't mind this, but they were overall too greasy. Oil heavily stained the box, and my fingers glistened after holding and eating the donuts. Realistically, this review is closer to a 3.5 than a 4 out of 5. I'm not a classic glazed donut person (too boring for me), so I love the variety of flavor combinations offered. Here's my run down: - Chocolate and almond toffee: can't go wrong with this one! - Rose geranium and rhubarb: flavors were faint and could use more rose geranium. - Cardamom, kumquat, and pistachio: cardamom overpowered the other flavors, and more candied kumquat slices would be great. - Pistachio cruller: I wish the pistachio flavor was stronger, but the eggy flavor and airy texture of the cruller reminded me of the comforting Chinese fried sugar egg puffs I'd eat at home. - Honey and black sesame cruller: I was ecstatic to see the introduction of a flavor more commonly found in Asian desserts, black sesame. With June/Pride month coming to an end, I wanted to toss out a final review for a fabulously owned LGBTQ, Asian and Women-owned business. When they first opened, you couldn't pass by without seeing Miss Bossie herself--a cow status that stood on the roof. Unfortunately after multiple accounts of vandalism, Bossie has been relocated. Nonetheless, once you find Bossie's up on Milpas Street you too will become a regular. Some folks complain about the steep prices, yet everything is local when possible and made fresh upon the order being placed. While I was tempted by many menu options, the Heirloom BLT Sandwich called my name. Jesus, it was a monster of a sandwich with ripe tomatoes and perfectly smoked bacon slices. I also must mention that the side of fries were to die for. I always cave at ordering fries but these are made fresh and perfectly crispy and crunchy. Know that you can order a half sandwich if you're not starving. Oh and did someone say donuts?! To me, they have THE BEST donuts in Santa Barbara. Although they aren't sold until noon (so don't come a minute too early), these donuts are ready to be paired with an afternoon coffee pick-me-up. I had to order a box of four: Blackberry Crumble, Strawberry-Rhubarb, Chocolate Pistachio Cruller and a Donut Hole Donut. Bossie's Kitchen is BOMB! I live dangerously close to it. I should probably explore the menu more but I always get the same things. My go to is the pork belly sandwich. That sandwich is everything. The pork belly is so juicy. That umami from the fish sauce pairs so well with the cabbage slaw and herbs. I want one now. The Korean chicken sandwich is something I always order as well. It's crispy and has a slight kick to it. It's a heavier sandwich than the pork belly to me but thankfully it has a nice slaw on it to cut that fried-ness.
