There are two rest areas here - one eastbound and one westbound. Caltrans has closed the eastbound one (didn't see westbound today) and it's causing me trouble. It's not the weather, which is quite pleasant in late autumn. It's that there isn't much else along the way to stop and stretch or to spend the night. What's up with that? If you're looking for a spot to overnight for free, the next one east is 45 miles to the the Walmart in Barstow. Westbound? Tons of roaches and I had a terrifying experience. Idk if it was ghosts or someone hiding in the women's bathrooms but I had to leave immediately. Absolutely no one else was parked in the lot. As I approached the women's bathroom lights were off but the men's were on. I went inside to check for a switch, there only two metal panels so I left. After about 5 seconds the lights switched on behind me. Idk why I trusted it, but I went inside and into the last stall. Directly upon starting to wipe the lights switched back off. I booked it out of there asap. The men's lights remained on the entire time. read more

This is a nice rest stop near Boron along Highway 15. There are lots of shaded parking spaces and a nice information center that is under a covered patio. The bathrooms are nice. There were no food and drinks available when we came. Not sure what the story is with that. They do have a nice truckstop area as well. read more

Yup my friends, when you have driven up and down CA-58 as many times as I have, you'll get to appreciate the importance of well situated, functioning and clean Rest Areas! Over the last two decades Boron Rest Area has been remodeled and improved at least a couple of times, but improved or not, through out its existence, this Rest Area has played a critical role in preventing CA-58 from smelling like NYC Subways! You think I exaggerate? Next time on your way to Vegas buy two large cups of coffee in Bakersfield and sip on it so that you finish both cups as you pass Mojave. By the time you get to the exit to Edwards Airbase, you will be praying to Jesus to provide you the strength to hold on! So why give this rest area 5 stars? Is it in a scenic location? Nope unless dust and scrub are your thing. Is it a pleasant stop to stretch your legs? Nope unless you like 109 degrees in the shade? Are the restroom clean? don't know Is it a good place to picnic? Hell no, concrete benches with no shade? you would think that would put people off but a few were trying. So why 5 stars? One little noteworthy thing is that this particular rest area is spectacular for watching aircraft returning to Edwards AFB. It sits right on the approach of runway 22/4L and 22/4R. You can spend several hours watching planes either make their approach or do a flyby/touch and go and get back into the pattern. Spotting is a bit like fishing you never know what you are going to get. For this trip we were treated to a variety of aircraft including a B-52, a F-16 sporting 70th anniversary colors, an F-35, and an F-22 Raptor. It also allows a pretty good view of rocket ridge. The Eastbound rest stop generally is the best for viewing but you can get decent shots if Westbound. There is some shade on the fence line and you can spot from there. However be careful as inconsiderate owners leave their dog poop along the fence line rather than pick it up. Also the cyclone fence wreaks havoc on autofocus so once it drops below that line don't bother. Aside from that its a typical, albeit hot, rest area if you need to stretch you legs or make an err. deposit. Gas and food is available in nearby Boron. Balls 8 is also a quick hop away. read more

In a land of scarce rest areas, the Boron Rest Area is ALWAYS OPEN. Yes, it is sketchy driving from the coast to Las Vegas, but this dependable old favorite is halfway there, and most importantly...it is OPEN. Rest areas are few and far between on the California Freeways, and this one located on a desert outside of Tehachipi has clean bathrooms, vending machines, and ample parking. It is often over 100 degrees here, but it is the first stop on the way back to the coast before you climb the mountains to Tehachipi, where urban amenities await you. Calm desert landscape surrounds you, and there are a few concrete picnic tables surrounding the bathrooms. read more

We stopped at the Boron Rest Area on our road trip to Death Valley. The rest area offers ample parking, but few parking spots are shaded. Restroom accommodations are clean and maintained and have motion-sensor plumbing fixtures. The grounds have a significant number of benches and tables. Trash receptacles available, but limited recycling receptacles. Snack vending area closed during our visit. Maybe because I'm from East Coast - but seriously - what is the point of a rest area? Besides a place to pee? The facilities are unattended, so no hourly cleaning. There are picnic tables yet no place to buy food. In the East - our rest areas have gas stations, food courts and convenience stores. So if I'm going to rate this on the California rest area standard - the restrooms were relatively clean. And it was a pretty long lap around the building to stretch our legs. read more

Easy access, plenty of parking. Lots of "no dogs" signs around restrooms and surrounding area, walked around but did not find a posted dog area. We stayed on the outskirts near the parking area and walked our pups. Noticed other dog owners doing the same. Out on the middle of nowhere, so was glad to have a place to stop. read more

Clean restrooms newly renovated and easy on and easy off for you travelers who need a pit stop. Plenty of parking and good for us RV parking!! Vending machines and across the street on the west bound side is the California Highway Patrol Office. Since the remodeling this is a really nice rest stop so no worries if you are in need of a pit stop! Just wish they had paper towels instead of blowers for your hands. Out in the middle of nowhere is this rest stop. I can't say there is anything special about it but we always stop here as it is now tradition. Just like it is tradition for me to whip out my camera and take a pic of the rattlesnake warning signs. It always makes me chuckle. I am guessing that a snek aint been seen in there parts in ages, much less a rattler. But i always seem to be there when a "not from around here" type stops by and reads the signage. The next thing they do is start scanning the area, as if they will spy a legless assassin slithering right towards them... Yeah, it worth it to stop here just to see how the city slickers react. read more

I stopped at this rest area shortly after 7 AM on a Friday morning. I was happy to see plenty of benches and tables to sit at as well as lots of beautiful trees that were lending their cool shade. :) This is not a large rest area. The ladies restroom had six or seven stalls and it definitely needed some TLC. I have seen worse but it also took me three tries at finding a stall with TP. There is a CHP office here which i'm sure makes this place safer when they are here. :) Also this is not a dog friendly rest area. read more

I just have to say, my expectations were pretty low when I arrived at this rest stop. After pulling up, I placed my rest stop bathroom kit in my pocket and head towards the entrance. My kit includes nitrile gloves, Wet Ones, and multiply toilet paper. I'm very used to having to wipe down the top of the seat with a Wet One before placing the liner down to do my business. As I approach the entrance, the unmistakable scent of recently used cleansers wafted listlessly towards my direction. This was, hands down, the cleanest rest stop I have ever entered. I was able to conduct my business without fear of contracting a disease. When I went to clean up after my business, I noticed that they even stocked two-ply toilet paper. I literally had no use for my restroom kit. This restroom receives four stars because the hand dryer was out of order and there was graffiti etches into the mirrors and porcelain. Will definitely stop again in the future. read more

Hello weary desert travelers. I imagine you're in need of a place to stretch your legs and empty that caffeine filled bladder. Welcome to the Boron Rest Area, courtesy of Transportation Department of California. The Boron Rest Area has been newly renovated (when? no clue). But the facilities are clean and modern and mostly well taken care of. Every time I've stopped the bathrooms have been spotless, even with the number of people that flow through here. Given the lack of options (unless you count bushes) nearby, the Boron Rest Area will come in handy. read more

You're here because you have to pee. They have a place for that. And after that if you want to re-fill your bladder they have a whole family of vending machines for that. Only thing I didn't like is there is limited shade (although it is in the middle of the desert) and it's a bit of a walk from the parking area to the buildings, but that just gives you good opportunity to stretch your legs. All-in-all not a bad place to stop. read more
